At that time, God called her to become a full time missionary. For the past several months, she has been on mission at an orphanage in Peru. We were able to catch up with her on a short visit home. Tammy Dicken has been working with Go Ye Ministries in Peru to help meet needs and spread the Gospel.<br /> <br /> Go Ye Ministries consists of an orphanage, a church, and a school. Tammy is also teaching English classes in a nearby school, and she is working as a nurse for the surrounding community. <br /> <br /> Tammy is spending a lot of time working with children at the school and with the more than thirty children at the orphanage. She told us that the children have a lot of emotional and spiritual issues. Many have suffered abuse. Tammy told us that it was amazing to see one of the girls embrace the Gospel despite her family life. <br /> <br /> Tammy is also helping with the physical and spiritual needs of the adults living nearby. There are about 800 families living in a dump that surrounds the orphanage. The people of Go Ye Ministries has been able to have a Bible Study with some of the women in the dump for the past two years. There are also brothels near the orphanage. Go Ye is working on starting an online sewing business for women who want to leave prostitution.<br /> <br /> Tammy’s church, Calvary Baptist, is helping to support Tammy in her missions. At the orphanage, they have always washed clothes by hand, but through a generous VBS donation, they will soon have a washing machine. The local United Way put the word out for volunteers to help build the playground. They expected about 80 people to show up, but nearly double that number did. Folks from as far away as Connecticut helped to build the new playground, and a group of 17 teenagers helped while in the area for a mission trip. </article> <article> <h1>IRS Scandal</h1> <p>2014-06-21T08:21:00.000-04:00</p> The IRS is under fire after accusations that it was unfairly targeting Tea Party members. Congress has ordered the IRS to turn over two year old emails from various employees involved in the case. The IRS now claims that this is impossible, because emails of eight of the employees were archived on their computers’ which all suffered hard drive crashes. </article> <article> <h1>June Events in Carter County</h1> <p>2014-06-07T07:24:00.000-04:00</p> There are two festivals coming to Carter County this month. Elizabethton’s Covered Bridge Festival is this upcoming Wednesday through Saturday. The event features music, food, crafts, yard sales, and a kids area. In Carter County, incumbent Chris Mathes lost the primary election on May 6. He has now decided to run as a write-in candidate. Mathes originally said that he would not run as a write-in, but he has now changed his mind due to a large amount of support from the public for him to do so. Independent candidate, James Parrish, announced Friday evening that he would no longer be running. He is supporting Republican nominee Dexter Lunceford. In Washington County, their primary has finally been decided through a recount. Incumbent Sheriff Ed Graybeal won by a narrow 12 votes. The Johnson City Press Christmas box had a very successful year. They raised a total of over $17,000 which helped them to serve more than 500 families at their recent distribution day on December 21st. They thank all those that helped and hope to have another successful year next year. </article> <article> <h1>Gap Creek Road Project Delayed</h1> <p>2014-01-03T18:01:00.000-05:00</p> The completion of the new Gap Creek Road project has been delayed. Crews were working on the road this week when they discovered an area of soft material. They had previously believed that the entire area was hard rock. The original completion date was set for October, but it has now been pushed back to May of next year. </article> <article> <h1>New Tax Law</h1> <p>2014-01-03T18:00:00.000-05:00</p> A new law went into effect on Wednesday in Tennessee. The new law requires the collection of state sales tax for purchases on Amazon.com. The tax collection is expected to provide about $17 million in revenue for the state. </article> <article> <h1>Johnson City Press Christmas Box</h1> <p>2013-06-12T18:00:00.000-04:00</p> A local ministry is getting a head start on their annual Christmas food program. They need your help to raise money to feed the needy in our community. Each year, the Johnson City Press Christmas Box provides food boxes for over 900 families as well as a $35 gift certificate for seniors in Carter County. Becky Brumitt of Hale Community Ministries told us there were twenty-one food items in the boxes last year including a ham and a turkey. "We found out that seniors are on special diets," says Martha Laws who represents Carter County at the Johnson City Press Food Box. She sites this as the reason for offering seniors certificates. It is an immense struggle to raise the funds to purchase the food. Laws says that the committee in charge of Carter County's food box has had to raise money each year for the program. This year, they hope to get a head start and gain recurring donors. The program needs help from individuals like you as the costs for the program total more than $30,000. Becky Brumitt is working with Watauga Baptist churches to raise money for the food. Volunteers are also needed to help pack and distribute the boxes. "The most rewarding thing of distribution is the family that comes in, and they see that box as if it's a box of gold," says Candy Craig, a volunteer for the program. To volunteer call Martha Laws at 423-282-5756. </article> <article> <h1>Belize Mission Trip</h1> <p>2013-06-12T17:00:00.000-04:00</p> Each summer, children all across the United States enjoy participating in the excitement of Vacation Bible School, but what about the rest of the world? A mission team from Calvary Baptist Church in Elizabethton recently helped to provide the spirit of VBS to children in the small villages of Roaring Creek and Camelote, Belize during their recent mission trip. They started off the week with two fun days with kids from nearby villages. The fun days truly were fun including Bible stories, music, face painting, crafts, balloon animals, t-shirt making, water balloon fights, and the best of all ice cream. During the rest of their stay, the team evangelized to the nearby village of Camelote while distributing much needed food as well as solar powered lights. At least one person came to know Christ during their visit. Calvary’s pastor, Joe Sorah was also busy throughout the week equipping Belizean pastors to lead their congregations, and their music director, Elmer Sams, repaired over 60 bicycles during the trip. While in Belize, the mission team joined the people of Camelote for some very lively church services. </article> <article> <h1>Repairing the Washington Monument</h1> <p>2013-06-12T13:49:00.000-04:00</p> Repair work has begun on the Washington Monument after it was damaged by an earthquake in August of 2011. The quake left many cracks, some large enough to let in water and sunlight. Engineers have been inspecting the monument ever since the earthquake to check each stone for damage. They will be repairing the monument with rock from its original quarry in Maryland. The park service hopes to reopen the monument next spring. </article> <article> <h1>Bill Could End Primary Elections</h1> <p>2013-04-01T17:17:00.002-04:00</p> A new bill proposed in the Tennessee state senate would change the way US senators are elected. The new bill would put state legislators in charge of nominating candidates for the position. Currently nominations are made by voters during a primary election. Supporters of the bill say that it is aimed at returning to a system closer to what was in place prior to 1913, when the 17th Amendment moved the senate election from the states to the people. If the bill is passed, it will take place after the next election. </article> <article> <h1>Update on Range Backpack Program</h1> <p>2013-04-01T17:16:00.003-04:00</p> Last December we told you about a program that helps to provide weekend food for students in the Tri-Cities. In order to help the students of Range Elementary, the report was sent out to churches near Range. Several people responded by donating to the program. An estimated total of more than $3100 has been raised for Range in the Backpack Program. </article> <article> <h1>Possible Closing of Range Elementary</h1> <p>2013-04-01T17:15:00.003-04:00</p> Parents of Range Elementary students fought for their children at a school board workshop last week. The workshop allowed the public to express their concerns over a plan to close Range and move its ninety-four students to Central Elementary. The Five Points grocery has been doing business since the 1940s at its location at the intersection of Depot Street and State Routes 81 and 353. TDOT will be demolishing the property to make way for the new intersection. </article> <article> <h1>Hostage Situation Comes to an End</h1> <p>2013-02-05T20:12:00.002-05:00</p> The five-year-old boy held hostage in an underground bunker since last Tuesday was finally rescued yesterday. Police say the child was abducted from a school bus in Midland City, AL after his kidnapper, Jimmy Lee Dykes, shot and killed the bus driver. Police had made contact with Dykes and had been lowering toys, food, and medication for the boy through a ventilation pipe. Police entered the bunker yesterday fearing that Dykes was going to hurt the boy. Dykes is now dead, and the boy is now safe. </article> <article> <h1>Three Injured in Car Wreck</h1> <p>2013-02-05T20:10:00.001-05:00</p> Three people are injured following a car wreck on Highway 19E in Carter County. According to police a GMC Sierra truck crossed the median into oncoming traffic hitting a Chevrolet 1500 head on. All three persons involved in the crash are in the Johnson City Medical Center.
