<p>Anybody who is reading this or listens to WMGK has watched Saturday Night Live at some point in its 40 years of being on NBC-TV. It&#8217;s our show. It&#8217;s our generation. It&#8217;s our people. So when I heard about the 40th anniversary special that was airing (last night) I was not only psyched but interested&#8230;</p>
<p>The post <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://wmgk.com/2015/02/16/snl-40th-ten-observations/">SNL 40th - Ten Observations</a> appeared first on <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://wmgk.com">WMGK</a>.</p>

Anybody who is reading this or listens to WMGK has watched Saturday Night Live at some point in its 40 years of being on NBC-TV.

It’s our show. It’s our generation. It’s our people. So when I heard about the 40th anniversary special that was airing (last night) I was not only psyched but interested to see how it would be presented.

It was a reunion for the players and a reunion for us. Here’s my list of top ten observations about the 40th anniversary show.

Like every SNL show, there were some hits and some misses

Like at any reunion, I didn’t remember everyone’s name (Joe Piscopo, Norm McDonald, and more)

The original players have aged accordingly (Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Jane Curtin, etc)

Like most SNL shows, the musical act is timely as in Kanye West after the recent Grammy nonsense he pulled

Not everybody was there. Julia Louis Dreyfus, for example

It was a much deserved tribute to Lorne Michaels

OMG moments (McCartney playing “Maybe I’m Amazed” and being intro’d by Keith Richards; Bradley Cooper making out with Betty White)

Some of the commercials seemed to be made for the show (Android, Reebok)

Fun that it aired the week between the Grammys and the Oscars

One-time-only show with an enormous amount of celebrities

Last January, I crossed off a bucket list item by going to the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. It was an event that stayed with me all year as I saw so many of the films that debuted there open here in Philadelphia and the world. One of those, Whiplash has risen to the status of Best Picture nominee for an Oscar, another feather in the cap of Sundance founder Robert Redford for choosing the fledgling independent to have its premiere at the festival.

Whiplash is the story of a young drummer (Miles Teller) attending a prestigious music college and his extremely tough, abusive teacher/mentor (JK Simmons). Simmons already won the Golden Globe for best supporting actor, and while his character is unlikeable, there’s no denying his performance was captivating.

Although American Sniper opened in New York, LA and Dallas on Christmas Day, it opens in Philadelphia and worldwide tomorrow, January 16. The film is based on a true story of a Navy Seal, Chris Kyle, played by Bradley Cooper.

Bradley Cooper is up for lead actor. This is the third Oscar nomination for the Rydal native, the other two being Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle.

Some film critics noted that the director of American Sniper, Clint Eastwood was snubbed for Best Director category. Meanwhile, Foxcatcher was not nominated for Best Picture but the director is nominated.

The Grand Budapest Hotel came out in March 2014 and got the most nominations tying with Birdman. Meryl Streep has her 19th nomination for Into the Woods as Best Supporting Actress but Patricia Arquette will likely take the Oscar home as she did the Golden Globe for Boyhood, a slice-of-life film that shot in 39 days over the course of 12 years using all the same actors. We watch a boy named Mason (Ellar Coltrane) grow up.

Boyhood is nominated for Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Supporting Actor Ethan Hawk, and the aforementioned Supporting Actress Patricia Arquette along with Richard Linklater for Director. And – it’s another film that debuted at Sundance last year.

I’m surprised Unbroken is not among the list. It’s a tough movie to watch but I’m glad I saw it. It’s another true story, this time about Olympian Louis Zamperini who spends time as a prisoner of war during World War II. Angelina Jolie directed but the movie is only up for Best Cinematography, Best sound mixing, and Best Sound Editing.

No love went to Jennifer Aniston for her role in Cake, a dark drama for which she was acknowledged in the Golden Globes with a nomination as best actress in a drama. Similarly, Amy Adams, who won the Golden Globe for best actress in a comedy or musical, (Big Eyes) didn’t even make the Oscar list.

Still Alice shows up with a nom for Best Actress for Julianne Moore who already took the Golden Globe. While Felicity Jones does a stellar job expressing the nuances of change in The Theory of Everything, and Rosamund Pike creates a convincing portrayal of a psychopath in Gone Girl, the Oscar will probably go to Julianne Moore for playing a 50-year-old professor “struggling with, not suffering from” (as she said in the film), an early onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

The Academy Awards airs on February 22 on 6abc. But first, the next awards show will be the SAG Awards (Screen Actors Guild) on Sunday, January 25 on TNT and TBS. This awards show only focuses on the actors and is determined by the members of the guild of which I am a member. I will cast my vote and then watch the show with my fellow actors at a soiree in South Philly at the IATSE union hall.

Here is the list of nominees in some of the categories:

Fall in Philadelphia means it’s time for the Film Festival. This year it runs from Thursday, October 16 to Sunday, October 26.

The Festival kicks off with a special presentation of St. Vincent, a rousing comedy starring Bill Murray. Director Ted Melfi and young actor and Philadelphia native, Jaeden Lieberher will be in attendance for Q&A afterward. Also on Opening night will be Birdman, starring Michael Keaton, Edward Norton, Naomi Watts and Emma Stone.

Closing night is Wild, the critical hit out of the 2014 Toronto Film Festival starring Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern and Gabby Hoffman.

What’s really fun about film festivals is you see films before they are distributed worldwide, and you see films that may never be distributed.

One of the films I saw at Sundance in January that will play at the PFF is Listen Up Philip directed by Alex Ross Perry who grew up in
Bryn Mawr. His father, Roy Perry, works with us here at Greater Media.

This third feature of his has the biggest names yet – Elisabeth Moss (Peggy from Mad Men) and Jason Schwartman (HBO’s Bored to Death, Rushmore, Moonrise Kingdom, Saving Mr. Banks).

Perry will be present at the PFF to field questions after the screening on Sunday, October 19 at the Ritz East – Showtime is 7:10 pm. The movie is also showing on Sunday, October 26 at 12:15 pm at the Ritz East.

Happy Valley is another film that has a local edge. It’s a documentary described by the PFF this way:

“…Happy Valley is a comprehensive look at the horrifying story of what might have been an open secret of corruption and pedophilia, and a thoughtful meditation on the nature of fandom.”

This doc will show twice – Tuesday, October 21 at the Prince Theater, and Sunday, October 26 at the Ritz East. Director Amir Bar-Lev will be in attendance at both.

I recommend seeing The Good Lie that stars Reese Witherspoon.

The Good Lie was inspired by a true story of child refugees from the 1983 war in Sudan who trekked some 785 miles to find safety in a refugee camp in Kenya. After 13 years living there in very modest conditions, some were chosen to move to America.

The film focuses on three men and a woman, part of what became known as the Lost Boys and Girls about which many books, films and plays have been made. Reese Witherspoon works for an employment agency responsible for finding them work. I found this movie to be very moving and inspiring. It screens on Sunday, Oct 19 at 8 pm at the Prince Music Theater.

The 23rd Philadelphia Film Festival
October 16 – 26, 2014

Participating venues:

Perelman Theater 300 S Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19102
PFS Roxy Theater 2023 Sansom Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103
Prince Music Theater 1412 Chestnut St, Philadelphia, PA 19102
Bourse 400 Ranstead St, Philadelphia, PA 19106
Ritz East 125 S. 2nd St, Philadelphia, PA 19106

The full Festival schedule and digital Festival Program Guide is available online: www.filmadelphia.org/festival or in person at the PFS Roxy Theater

<p>The wait for a new U2 album is over. On Tuesday, U2 announced the release of Songs of Innocence at the Apple&#8217;s iPhone 6 Event in California, and launched into the opening track The Miracle(of Joey Ramone) on stage there. &#160; In a bold, pioneering move, U2 released the album for free to every iTunes&#8230;</p>

The wait for a new U2 album is over. On Tuesday, U2 announced the release of Songs of Innocence at the Apple’s iPhone 6 Event in California, and launched into the opening track The Miracle(of Joey Ramone) on stage there.

In a bold, pioneering move, U2 released the album for free to every iTunes user. The complete album appeared in a user’s music library – no downloading necessary – all a person has to do is go to their iTunes music library, check the “Recently Added” section, and there it is.

Apple has had a ten-year history with U2 when the band first appeared in a TV commercial for the iPod. Apple bought the new album as a gift to give all their music customers.

CEO of Apple, Tim Cook called it "the biggest album release in the history of music" because the album is being automatically distributed into the music libraries of everyone with an iTunes account -- more than half a billion people.

Bono explained, “Part of the DNA of this band has always been the desire to get our music to as many people as possible. In the next 24 hours, over a half a billion people are going to have Songs of Innocence… should they choose to check it out. That is so exciting. People who haven’t heard our music, or weren’t remotely interested, might play us for the first time because we’re in their library.”

He added, “What a mind blowing, head scratching, 21st century situation. Over 500 million people… that’s a billion ears. And for the people out there who have no interest in checking us out, look at it this way… the blood, sweat and tears of some Irish guys are in your junk mail.”

On October 14th the physical release of Songs of Innocence on CD will be available to purchase with a 24-page booklet. Another option will be a deluxe, gatefold double album, containing an acoustic session of songs from the album and four additional tracks.

Songs of Innocence was recorded in Dublin, London, New York and Los Angeles and is produced by Danger Mouse, who won the 2013 Grammy Award for Best Rock Song for Lonely Boy; along with Paul Epworth who has produced Adele, Florence and the Machine, Coldplay; Ryan Tedder, the frontman of the pop rock band OneRepublic whose production credits include Jennifer Lopez, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood; Declan Gaffney, who worked on U2’s last album No Line On The Horizon; and Flood, (New Order, U2, PJ Harvey, The Smashing Pumpkins). The album closes with The Troubles featuring the distinctive vocals of Swedish indie singer-songwriter Lykke Li, a 28-year old Swedish pop singer-songwriter appearing in Philadelphia at Union Transfer on October 1st.

There are hints that Chris Martin of Coldplay was involved in the recording. Apparently his name is credited in the 24-page booklet that only comes with the hard copy of the CD on October 14th, the day after the free iTunes delivery stops. A simple “thank you for your contributions” is all we’ve heard about the credit but there are pictures of Martin entering, leaving and IN a studio in New York while U2 was recording.

Photo here is the album cover.

<p>It&#8217;s not easy these days to come up with a new hit show for network TV. There&#8217;s so much competition vying for our attention between Netflix, the internet and social media, the bar has been set a lot higher these days. If you do venture into those wild waters with something new, it&#8217;s best that&#8230;</p>

It’s not easy these days to come up with a new hit show for network TV. There’s so much competition vying for our attention between Netflix, the internet and social media, the bar has been set a lot higher these days.

If you do venture into those wild waters with something new, it’s best that a known commodity be behind it. How To Get Away with Murder has just that. It comes from one of most successful show creators out there - Shonda Rhimes. Everything she touches seems to turn to gold.

Her medical drama, Grey’s Anatomy was ranked the highest rated drama in a key age group 18-49, has won many awards and is about to kick off its 11th season. (10 seasons is the usual pinnacle). Rhimes’ newer entry, Scandal, that started in 2012 also ranks as one of the highest rated dramas on television.

She has had her miss-steps, though. The Practice, a spin off of Grey’s only lasted two seasons, and several other shows never got off the ground.

We Philadelphia residents have more of a stake in Murder’s success since the story is based here. Yes, the show is filled with our landmarks like City Hall, and it would be nice to have the work for actors and crew if it continued to film here but after the first episode, production moved to Los Angeles for the remainder of the series.

Other locales used in the first episode include Bryn Mawr College although it’s named something else in the show.

The star of this legal thriller, Viola Davis moves from the big screen (Doubt, The Help) to her television close-up. I saw a preview of the first episode recently at 6ABC studios on City Avenue, and by all accounts, she rocked it.

I had a little trouble with the show being very dark, visually. There were a lot of nighttime scenes that made it hard to make out the faces. If the audiences can get past that, and get hooked into the storyline and characters, the series could catch on…. as long as we can take ourselves away from Facebook and You Tube long enough to watch.

Scot Sax is a successful songwriter from Philadelphia. He had a number one song “I Walked,” with his band Wanderlust in the mid-90s, another #1 with “I am the Summertime" from the film soundtrack to American Pie, and in 2006, he co-wrote “Like We Never Loved At All“ that became a hit for Faith Hill and Tim McGraw and won a Grammy.

Now he’s making a documentary called “Platinum Rush; a film by a songwriter.“ To help fund the project, he reached out to friends and fans through Kickstarter to donate money. I dove right in because I’ve always believed in Scot’s talent.

The way Kickstarter works is, Scot offered incentives to pay back his donors. In my case, I chose the incentive that he write a song about me. I’ve posted it here.

I was the first person to play Scot’s original music on the radio back in the nineties when I had my show “Street Beat” on WMMR, and that’s what he wrote the song about.

It’s fun to be part of a project like this by donating money to the cause. I’ll always have the song Scot wrote about me, and I wanted to share it with you. (I’m gloating, I know….)

I’ll keep you posted about the film. I can’t wait to see it!

To find out more about Scot, read his bio.

I wrote an article about him late last year called How Music saved Scot Sax

Embedded below, the clip plays out like a stereotypical episode of VH1’s Behind The Music. It even sounds like they got the same guy to do the voice over, too! (A check to said voice actor’s IMDb page doesn’t list a credit for Rock The Kasbah, so who knows if it’s the same guy.)

Anyway…there are plenty of guest appearances in the 2:24 video, from Willie Nelson to Steven Van Zandt, but the best parts are some of the things for which Lanz is credited, like telling Slash to wear a top hat or Jimi Hendrix’s classic performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Either way, if you weren’t planning on seeing this film already, you might just your mind.

In speaking with U.K.’s The Guardian, Henley&#8230;</p>

In speaking with U.K.’s The Guardian, Henley said, “A lot of people on the outside believe a lot of the b*llshit in Don Felder’s book and believe Glenn Frey and I are some kind of tyrants. The fact is, we are largely responsible both for the longevity and the success of this band. Because we did it our way, and a lot of people didn’t like that.”

To really drive home his point, Henley adds, “Felder’s just bitter because he got kicked out of the group so he decided to write a nasty little tell-all, which I think is a really low, cheap shot. I mean, I could write some stuff about him that would make your moustache curl.”

Ouch! We’re not sure what type of stories could actually curl a moustache, but frankly, we’re too nervous to find out.

So far, Felder hasn’t responded to Henley’s comments, but if he does, it’s a safe bet he won’t hold back.

Of course, this isn’t the first time Fallon has done something like this. Remember when he imitated Neil Young and was joined by Crosby, Stills & Nash for a rendition of the Iggy Azalea hit “Fancy?” Too funny!

Fathom Events has announced that encore screenings of the documentary about Waters's 2010-13 touring presentation of Pink Floyd's "The Wall" -- which screened this past Tuesday (September 29) -- will begin on October 15 in about 250 theaters; locations and dates can be found at RogerWatersTheWall.com.

Waters tells us he's pleased with the after-life the film has afforded the tour and that interest has remained for the documentary since its premiere at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival:

"It's been sort of a lovely surprise, really, that it developed in the way that it did, and the tour couldn't have gone better...and the film has gone well. I'm quite glad that we weren't snapped up after TIFF 'cause it gave (co-director) Sean Evans and I the opportunity to reexamine some of the bits in the middle of the film and change it a bit and add a bit more of the road trip and change things a bit. It was really important to have the extra five months to do that."

A DVD and CD version of the film is expected to be announced soon, while Waters is also working on a stage adaptation of The Wall as well as a new album.

The document -- which previously sold for $375,000 at another auction -- is signed by all four members and Epstein, while some of the Beatles' parents had to give their blessing because some of the Fabs were too young to sign for themselves. It's the only managerial contract of any kind signed by all four Beatles and Epstein.

...Meanwhile, reports out of Hollywood indicate an animated feature titled "Meet The Beatles" is on the way.

Tracking-Board.com reports that "Paddington" director Paul King is helming the authorized production, which will be co-produced by Harry Potter's David Heyman and written by Jay Stern. There's no word yet on when production will begin or when the film will be released. Director Robert Zemeckis was planning a 3D remake of "Yellow Submarine" in 2010, but that never transpired.

...And finally, Ringo Starr and his latest All-Starr Band kick off a North American tour tonight (October 1) in San Francisco that's slated to run all month, finishing Halloween night (October 31) in Brooklyn.

In an exclusive excerpt in MOJO magazine, McCartney recalls “Apparently John heard it when he was in New York. I saw a John documentary and somebody was saying, ‘I brought this record of Paul’s to John and played it for him.’ John went, ‘Oh f*ckin’ hell, the bastard’s done something good! I’ve gotta work!’ I love the idea of forcing him up off his arse.”

Hunter and his wife, Karen, worked with Phonographic Performance Limited to gain the royalties, which date back for the last 10 years.

Hunter -- who suffers from pigmentary glaucoma that will eventually blind him completely -- wrote on Facebook that he is "very grateful for all the work Karen put into tracking everything down and getting all the necessary evidence for those tracks on which I was not credited...Karen and I will not be retiring to Maui when these royalties come in. They are for radio airplay only and will go back no further than 10 years. It is a little piece and will add up. Now if it were record royalties, we would for sure be retiring to Maui...It will be money very much appreciated though to be sure."

The Illinois-born Hunter's credits include Lou Reed, Peter Gabriel, David Lee Roth, Bette Midler, Mitch Ryder and the band Detroit, among others.
