SLASH SAYS NO AMOUNT OF MONEY COULD REUNITE GUNS N' ROSES

Legendary guitarist Slash was interviewed by CNN's Piers Morgan on Wednesday night (May 23rd), where he said that no amount of money could ever get the original Guns N' Roses to reunite. Slash explained, "I don't think it's a matter of that; it really isn't. I think you've got a situation where nobody involved wants to revisit. It's not just me -- it's the whole band. And so I don't think there's a price tag that anybody's put in front of us that's going to make that work."

Asked about the kinds of offers the band has gotten to get back together for a tour, Slash replied, "I've heard a lot of numbers, but I've never been handed a specific offer. But I'd say it starts off with seven figures and then sometimes it starts to get even more grandiose than that."

Guns N' Roses was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last month, with Slash and several other original and later members of the group performing. Missing, however, was singer Axl Rose, who declined to attend.
Slash told us that he knew from the start there was no chance of the original lineup performing again: "I never, in however many years it's been, ever planned or thought that there was gonna be any reunion. Everybody else has sort of alluded to it but, you know, I never saw it coming. I knew it was just an impossible thing, and it wasn't something I really wanted."
Slash also told Morgan he has not spoken with Axl since 1996, the year he left the band. As for the circumstances of his departure, Slash recalled, "It wasn't even me necessarily leaving the band, it was not continuing on with the new band that Axl put together that he was now at the helm of, which was the new Guns N' Roses. I was given a contract to basically join his new band, and it took about 24 hours before I decided, 'I think this is the end of the line.'"
Slash released his second solo album, titled Apocalyptic Love, on Tuesday (May 22nd). The first single, "You're A Lie," is a Top Five track at rock radio.
Slash and his band will play Rocklahoma in Pryor, Oklahoma on Friday (May 25th) and Albuquerque, New Mexico on Saturday (May 26th) before heading out on a European jaunt.

METALLICA'S ROBERT TRUJILLO FINANCING FILM ABOUT BASS LEGEND

With Metallica making its own 3D feature film and drummer Lars Ulrich forging a career as an actor, now bassist Robert Trujillo is dipping his toes into the movie business as well. According to USA Today, Trujillo is financing a film about the late, legendary bassist Jaco Pastorius, who is cited as a major influence on many of today's top players in the rock and jazz worlds.

Trujillo said, "Jaco was my hero growing up. Hearing him was like hearing Eddie Van Halen doing 'Eruption' for the first time. You thought, 'What instrument is that?' I love jazz fusion and branched out from there. But Jaco had an edge that far exceeded his jazz persona. He was funk, he was rock, he was soul, and his whole attitude was punk."

Trujillo has been working on the project for two years with director Stephen Kijak and hopes to have it ready for this September's Toronto Film Festival.
The film, tentatively titled Jaco, will feature commentary from the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea, Sting, Carlos Santana and others.
Trujillo said he met Pastorius, who suffered from mental illness, just once, recalling, "I wanted to rescue him, but I learned that Jaco didn't want to be rescued." He added, "This film for me is from the heart."
As previously reported, Metallica will begin shooting its own 3D feature film this August. The movie is said to be a combination of concert footage and narrative storyline.
Lars Ulrich, meanwhile, has a featured role as Dutch documentary maker Joris Ivens in the HBO film Hemingway & Gellhorn, which premieres this Monday (May 28th). The film stars Clive Owen as author Ernest Hemingway and Nicole Kidman as war correspondent Martha Gellhorn in a fictionalized account of their affair.

Jaco Pastorius was best known for his revolutionary jazz-fusion playing with the group Weather Report.
He also played on four highly-acclaimed albums by Joni Mitchell, as well as dozens of other projects by various artists.
Pastorius, who suffered from mental illness, bipolar disorder and substance abuse for most of his life, died in 1986 at the age of 35 after being badly beaten outside a bar.
During his life, Pastorius received two Grammy nominations and was inducted posthumously into the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame in 1988.

SOUNDGARDEN AND PEARL JAM KEEPING MATT CAMERON BUSY

Drummer Matt Cameron has one of the busiest schedules in rock: not only has he been the drummer for Pearl Jam since 1998, but his previous band, Soundgarden reunited two years ago and has also been keeping Cameron hard at work. He spoke with RockOl.com about doing double duty with both bands, saying, "As a musician, it's not hard for me to do it. But the scheduling can be sometime tough. Both bands will be pretty active in the next couple of years. Sometime my family gets a little upset that I''m gone so much, and I certainly don't want to be gone that much. But the opportunities are really fantastic right now: both groups are in demand for live concerts, new music and there's no reason not to do it. I'm enjoying it."

We asked Cameron if he alters his style depending on which band he's playing in: "I don't think I do. I mean, I'm just really trying to play my role in each group. I definitely feel like I support the vocal in both groups. The music around the vocal is a little bit different. But that's the way I've always considered my drumming, is vocal-influenced. I've been lucky enough to play with two of the best singers in modern day history, so I think that's always sort of been my strength as a drummer."
Soundgarden began recording a new album in March 2011, with the disc slated to come out sometime this fall. Cameron explained why it has taken so long to complete, saying, "It just took a little time to get it going, because of scheduling. Chris (Cornell, frontman) and I have pretty busy schedules and tours outside of Soundgarden. So it has just taken a long time to get everyone on the same page and make sure we're not double-booking ourselves."
As for how the new disc turned out, Cameron said, "Once we got into the studio, we had a really good time together and everything came together very easily. It was very good to record new Soundgarden. I think people will enjoy what we did in 2012 -- it's a nice evolution of familiar elements of our sounds."
Cameron will also be doing live and studio work with Pearl Jam later this year as well, saying that Pearl Jam is "going to finish recording this fall. We had half of it done, and then we decided to go back and do some more writing. We're going to release it at some point in 2013, but I can't look that far into the future."
Soundgarden's first new song in 16 years, "Live To Rise," is currently topping the Active Rock radio chart.
The track is taken from Avengers Assemble, the companion soundtrack to the blockbuster movie The Avengers.

MORE PEARL JAM: BASSIST FUNDS SKATE PARKS, GUITARIST 'REUNITES' MAD SEASON

Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament has added skate park builder to a resume that already includes activist and philanthropist. According to Antiquiet, lifelong skateboarder Ament -- who learned how to skate while growing up in rural Montana -- currently helps build tremendous skate parks in some of the most rural and deprived areas in the west. Most recently, in 2011, he joined forces with others to build a world-class skate park on the impoverished Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.

A new short film called Pass The Bucket focuses on Ament's passion for skateboarding.

Meanwhile, Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready unveiled a new version of the band Mad Season on Wednesday night (May 23rd) at the Showbox in Seattle. At a benefit for the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America, McCready and Mad Season drummer Barrett Martin performed the band's "River Of Deceit" for the first time in nearly two decades, with Loaded's Jeff Rouse on vocals and Rick Friel on bass.

McCready has said recently that Mad Season, which also featured late Alice In Chains singer Layne Staley, could be making a semi-return later this year.
According to Grunge Report, McCready said that he plans to reissue the group's one album, 1995's Above, as well as a live record, and added that there is unreleased material that he would like to complete with new singers.
Mad Season officially dissolved in 1999 following the death of bassist John Baker Saunders. Staley died three years later in 2002.
Mad Season's sole album, Above, was certified gold for sales of half a million copies and yielded two Top 20 modern rock singles, "River Of Deceit" and "I Don't Know Anything."

SERJ TANKIAN DEBUTS 'FIGURE IT OUT' VIDEO

Serj Tankian has debuted the music video for his new single "Figure It Out" at Noisecreep. The track is taken from the System Of A Down singer's third solo album, Harakiri, due out on July 10th. "Figure It Out" takes direct aim at corporate CEOs, and the clip ends with a violent invasion of an executive party in a corporate boardroom. Tankian explained the concept behind it all: "Because CEOs have gotten away with murder, because of the way that our justice system works, and because they're defended for some of the actions that they take -- and the decisions that they make in putting jobs overseas and whatnot are not punishable by law -- we decided to punish them in the video and in the song, and directly hold them accountable."

Tankian told Noisecreepthat the tune is "a comical political song talking about abusive capitalism and the differences created in economic stature and the reaction to it."
Harakiri follows up Tankian's two previous solo outings, 2010's Imperfect Harmonies and 2007's Elect The Dead.
System Of A Down will play two weeks of East Coast dates this summer with Deftones, beginning on August 2nd in Philadelphia. System, which has not released new music since 2005, has no plans to record at the moment.

JON ANDERSON ANNOUNCES SOLO DATES

Ousted Yes frontman Jon Anderson has announced a short, ten-date American tour in support of his recent album, Open, which was released last fall. Pollstar.com posted that the show will feature some Yes songs "along with some of his other work with artists like Vangelis and Kitaro."

Anderson told us that if it wasn't for a special gift from his wife few years ago, he wouldn't be able to do the tour this way: ["A couple of years ago, my wife bought me a, a MIDI guitar, and that really changed my perception. With MIDI guitar, you can actually create a sort of one-man-band, and at times, like, orchestral sounds, and various things, and you can actually put in rhythms and things."

CHICAGO LEADER REMEMBERS LATE GUITARIST

Out now is Chicago keyboardist Robert Lamm's new solo album, Robert Lamm Songs: The JVE ReMixes, which features Lamm's Chicago classics and solo favorites dramatically reworked from the ground up by producer Jon Von Eps. Lamm had originally wanted it to be an official Chicago project, but the band balked at sanctioning a remix album.

We caught up with Lamm and talked about Chicago's original visionary, guitarist and co-founder Terry Kath, who died on January 23rd, 1978 by accidentally shooting himself in the head. Apart from his ground-breaking blend of rock and jazz-fusion guitar, Kath is best remembered for his rough and gutsy lead vocals on the band's classics "Colour My World," "Make Me Smile," and "Wishing You Were Here."

We asked Lamm what he thinks the future would've held for Kath and Chicago had he lived: "If he had gotten sober, and if he had lived -- (laughs) and if we had all been sober -- I think that, y'know, it could've been the sky's the limit. He passed away, really, kind of not long after 'If You Leave Me Now' was a hit. He respected it -- but he didn't want to do it (laughs) again, y'know? And I think that if we had continued together as a band we may have, y'know, we may have really continued to break new ground. But the other thing that may have happened is that, if we had continued down the path of doing ballads, I think he would've gone off and either done solo stuff or put together another band."

PAUL SIMON SAYS NO TO STUDIO SESSION WITH ART GARFUNKEL

Paul Simon is adamant to let Simon & Garfunkel remain a nostalgia act, rather than writing new material for the duo. Despite teaming up countless times, both in small and large scale reunions since their 1970 split, Simon would rather sing his new songs himself. When asked about a new Simon & Garfunkel studio set, Simon told BBC Radio, "There are a couple of issues. One, Art has some problem with his vocal chords and he can't sing in his mid-range. So it's really a moot point unless he can sing. From my own perspective, I would just as soon not go back and visit the past."

Like many Simon & Garfunkel fans who love the duo's periodic reunions, the ultimate wish for many is to see the two reunite for their first full-fledged studio album since their 1970 multi-platinum swan song, Bridge Over Troubled Water. Good friend and one of Garfunkel's major solo collaborators, singer-songwriter Jimmy Webb, told us that a Simon & Garfunkel reunion album could only be a win-win situation: "Anything you hear about them is only. . . It's like taking a snapshot on an ongoing train-wreck. I think it would be great for them to make another album, and I think maybe. . . maybe they'll both realize that someday at the same time. There's a complex relationship there; there's a lot I don't know about it, and it would be a great thing, I think a great thing if they for them and the fans if they did another record."

Paul Simon will next perform on June 2nd at San Francisco's Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall.

The new documentary Under African Skies, showcasing Paul Simon's return to South Africa and the musicians who recorded Graceland with him, won the Audience Award at 2012's South By Southwest Music and Media Conference and Festival in Austin. Under African Skies was directed by Joe Berlinger, who's best known in rock circles for his work on 2004's Metallica: Some Kind Of Monster. Under African Skies will have it's TV premiere tonight (May 25th) on the A&E Network. Check your local listings for stations and times.
On June 5th, Simon will be releasing several deluxe 25th anniversary editions of his 1986 Graceland album, with most extensive being the Collector's Edition Box Set.
The two CD/two DVD set includes the remastered original album, the Under African Skies documentary film, extended interviews, the original 1987 African Concert from Zimbabwe, three original music videos, and the iconic Saturday Night Live performance of "Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes."
The box set also features the audio narrative The Story Of Graceland as told by Simon, replicas of an original Graceland poster and a handwritten lyrics pad, plus a deluxe 80-page book featuring new and archival photos and interviews with Simon. The box set also includes a special short audio documentary of Simon discussing the making of the record.
On July 15th Simon will be joined by Graceland's South African musicians Ladysmith Black Mambazo, among other players when he performs at London's Hard Rock Calling Festival.

ELTON JOHN BRIEFLY HOSPITALIZED, CANCELS SHOWS

Elton John has canceled all four of his Las Vegas Million Dollar Piano performances after being hospitalized in Los Angeles with a respiratory infection. The Associated Pressreported that officials with Caesars Entertainment said the Vegas run -- Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday's (May 24th, 25th, 26th, and 27th) shows -- have been nixed following Elton's hospitalization on Wednesday (May 23rd) at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. The singer, who had come down with the illness last weekend, has already been released and under doctor's orders is to take antibiotics and not perform for a week. Ticket holders are eligible for refunds and exchanges at the place of purchase.

Elton said in a statement: "It feels strange not to be able to perform these Million Dollar Piano concerts at the Colosseum. . . I love performing the show and I will be thrilled when we return to the Colosseum in October to complete the 11 concerts. All I can say to the fans is, 'Sorry I can't be with you.'"

PAUL McCARTNEY'S 'RAM' DRUMMER RECALLS ALBUM SESSION FRICTION

Paul McCartney's original solo drummer -- and Wings co-founder -- Denny Seiwell recalls that the former Beatle's initial solo band sessions also had their share of tension. 1971's Ram, which has just been revamped and expanded as part of the McCartney's Archive Series, features McCartney joining forces with some of Manhattan's top session players -- including Dave Spinozza, who's best known for his sessions with Paul Simon, Billy Joel, John Lennon, Dr. John, and Ringo Starr, among others. Fans have long wondered why Spinozza split the sessions and was replaced by Hugh McCracken-- who also went on to play with John Lennon.

Seiwell, who's still close with both Spinozza and McCracken, recalls that although there was mutual respect on the studio floor, Spinozza's personality and McCartney's didn't gel: "Spinozza's great. I mean, I love 'em both, but Spinozza is, I mean, they're apples and oranges. They're totally different heads. But Spinozza's the kind of (guy) -- he'd goose ya on the way into the control room. He was a little too loose for Paul, y'know, he had a little too much fun."

Seiwell told us that McCartney was open to all the players suggestions and rarely recorded late into the night. He remembered that McCartney had only one stipulation for the players during the Ram sessions: ["But he asked us not to book (other) dates, and as soon as Dave saw that some days we were gonna get let go, he was taking a couple of (session) dates -- if there was a big jingle, or something, that he knew was gonna pay a lot of money. So one day, he said, 'Y'know, Paul, I gotta go, I got something else I gotta do' -- and Paul didn't want him to go that day. And that happened twice, in a very short time."
