The Blue Devil attack was led by Maddison Frink, who finished with five goals and one assist, while Morgan McNamara and Valerie Snider added three goals each. The Lakers, who fell to 6-9 overall and 0-6 in the league, were paced by Bri Borrow (Jr., Oswego, N.Y.) with three goals. Fredonia improved to 9-6 overall and 3-3 in SUNYAC play.

The Blue Devils held a two-goal lead when Erin Cummings (So., Valley Cottage, N.Y.) received a pass from Jessica Zenzel (Sr., Johnson City, N.Y.) to cut the deficit midway through the first half. On the ensuing draw control, Fredonia gained possession and marched down the field for the goal. Oswego State answered back with a goal from Amanda Hecox (Jr., New Hartford, N.Y.) to trail 3-2. However, the Blue Devils went on their scoring stretch to take a 12-3 lead into halftime as the Lakers received their third goal from Kristen Darcy (So., East Syracuse, N.Y.).

Head Coach Brandi Ostrander’s squad started the second half with increased intensity as Borrow, Darcy, and Marisa Audley (Sr., Liverpool, N.Y.) combined to score five goals in the first 6:15 to get back into the contest, trailing 12-8. Fredonia ended the comeback bid, though, by recording the next three goals for a 15-8 with 14:41 to play. Borrow tallied her third goal of the contest at the 23:18 mark with Zenzel earning the assist, but the Blue Devils again had an answer as Frink posted the game’s final goal.

Oswego State will next face Oneonta on Friday, April 30 at 4 p.m. before wrapping up the season at home on Saturday, May 1 against New Paltz at 1 p.m.

(Story provided by Oswego State Sports Information)

Matthew A. The Lakers scored three goals in under three minutes with two of those goals coming from the stick of Andy Lever (So., Lindenhurst, N.Y.) to take their first lead of the game. Oswego State improved to 6-8 overall and 1-3 in the conference, while the Golden Eagles fell to 7-5 overall and 1-3 in the league.

With the score knotted at 2-2 in the first quarter, Brockport closed out the first half with three goals from three separate players. The Golden Eagles took a 6-2 lead early in the second when Andy Hilton tallied his third goal of the game in a man-up situation. However, the Lakers received goals from Chad Smith (Fr., Fulton, N.Y.), Pat Decker (Jr., Spencerport, N.Y.), and Britt Leone (So., Schenectady, N.Y.) to make the score 6-5. Brockport added a goal just before the half to take a two-goal lead into the second half.

Both defenses got tougher in the third quarter as both offenses struggled to get quality looks at the net. Nevertheless, Oswego State out-scored the Golden Eagles 2-1 in the stanza after goals by Decker and Adam Jean (Fr., Tully, N.Y.) to make the score 8-7 with 15 minutes to play.

In the fourth quarter, Andy Lever scrambled to get free to the defender before ripping his second goal of the game past Brockport goalie Kyle Crosley to even the score with 10:32 remaining in regulation. Less than two minutes later, Dan Scarazzo (Sr., Fairport, N.Y.) found Andy Williams (So., Hamburg, N.Y.) for the go-ahead goal and the Lakers’ first lead of the contest. Oswego State won the ensuing face-off resulting in Lever’s third score to give it a two-goal lead. The Golden Eagles were not finished, though, as Adam Drypolcher scored nine seconds later. Brockport had just killed off a man-down situation when Mike Wiesenthal (Sr., Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) ripped a shot from the left side to give the Lakers a two-goal cushion with 3:43 remaining.

Oswego State’s defense held its ground in the waning moments of the game as the Golden Eagles battled to get back into the game. On Senior Day, a pair of seniors, Ryan White (Sr., Rockville Centre, N.Y.) and Nick Zoyhofski (Sr., Hamburg, N.Y.), forced two key turnovers to preserve the 11-9 victory. Another senior Judd Robinson (Guilderland, N.Y.) had a strong performance in goal after making 14 saves, including nine in the second half as the Lakers got back into the game. Crosley finished with 16 saves for Brockport with 12 coming in the first 30 minutes.

With the Oswego State victory and other results around the league, four teams sit in the final playoff spot with 1-3 records and two conference games to play. The Lakers will play their final home game of the season on Wednesday against Cortland starting at 4 p.m. before traveling to Plattsburgh on Saturday for the regular season finale.

(Story provided by Oswego State Sports Information)

Matthew A. The Lakers had seven different players score with Erin Cummings (So., Valley Cottage, N.Y.) leading the way with four goals followed by Jessica Zenzel (Sr., Johnson City, N.Y.), who added three goals and three assists. The win moved Oswego State back to .500 and is 6-6 on season, while Elmira dropped to 6-10 overall.

Both teams played evenly for the start of the first half. The Soaring Eagles jumped to the early 1-0 lead, but the Lakers quickly retaliated. The teams exchanged goals for about ten minutes before Oswego State began to pull away.

A 4-0 run by the Lakers put them up 10-4 with five minutes remaining, but Elmira would not back down. The Soaring Eagles retaliated with two goals of their own and narrowed the gap to four. Oswego State kept the offensive attack coming, however, as Audley netted a goal to send the Lakers into intermission with an 11-6 advantage.

Oswego State picked up where it left off in the second half and went on a 4-1 run for a comfortable 15-7 lead. The tempo slowed down after that point, however, and Elmira went on a run to come within four goals with over five minutes remaining in the contest. Despite outscoring the Lakers 8-6 in the second half, Elmira could not find a way to close gap as the Lakers held on for the victory.

In addition to the scoring from Cummings and Zenzel, Maria Martusewicz (Jr., Redwood, N.Y.), Kristen Darcy (So., East Syracuse, N.Y.), Marisa Audley (Sr., Liverpool, N.Y.), Andrea Musso (Sr., Auburn, N.Y.) and Stephanie Cronk (Fr., Endwell, N.Y.) contributed two goals apiece.

Oswego State will begin a four-game conference road trip Tuesday as it heads to Potsdam at 4:00.

(Story provided by Oswego State Sports Information Department)

Matthew A. Oswego State out-shot Potsdam 37-23, but Bear goalie Billy Richards came up with 12 saves to keep the Lakers off of the scoreboard. Oswego State fell to 4-8 overall and 0-3 in SUNYAC play, while Potsdam moved to 5-4 overall and 1-2 in the league.

The Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Ryan White (Sr., Rockville Centre, N.Y.) put the Lakers on the board after getting a feed from Britt Leone (So., Schenectady, N.Y.). Pat Decker (Jr., Spencerport, N.Y.) pulled Oswego State to within one goal with 4:45 left in the first quarter, but Potsdam regained the two-goal advantage less than a minute later when Sean McAuliffe scored.

Both squads traded goals throughout the second quarter until the Bears closed out the half with a pair of scores to take an 8-5 lead into the intermission. The trend continued into the third quarter, but McAuliffe posted the first of three straight Potsdam goals to put the Bears out in front 13-7 with 13:37 left to play.

Oswego State was not done though as Andy Williams (So., Hamburg, N.Y.) scored two consecutive goals to cut the deficit to four goals at 13-9. However, the deficit proved to be too much to overcome as the Lakers fell 15-11.

Three Potsdam players tallied three goals each led by Garrett Sharp, who finished the game with six points. The Oswego State offense was paced by Andy Lever (So., Lindenhurst, N.Y.), who contributed three points on two goals and one assist. Smith and Williams joined Lever with two goals. In goal, Laker goalie Judd Robinson (Sr., Guilderland, N.Y.) suffered the loss after making six saves.

Oswego State will have the week off until Wednesday, April 21 when it hosts non-conference Keuka at 4 p.m.

(Story provided by Oswego State Sports Information)

Matthew A. Fifteen different Lakers tallied goals with senior attack Marisa Audley (Liverpool, N.Y.) leading the way with five goals to go along with one assist. Oswego State moved over the .500 mark with the win at 5-4 overall, while the Wildcats saw a four-game winning streak come to an end to drop to 6-6.

The Lakers raced out to a 10-0 lead midway through the first half as Kristen Darcy (So., East Syracuse, N.Y.), Maria Martusewicz (Jr., Redwood, N.Y.), and Audley combined to score seven of the first ten goals. Courtney Caldwell stopped the streak with 11:53 on the clock after receiving a pass from Ashley Rasberry. However, that did not slow down Oswego State as it took a 16-1 lead into halftime.

Head coach Brandi Ostrander’s squad did not let up the intensity in the second half netting three goals in the first seven minutes as Oswego State cruised to the 28-3 win. Bri Borrow (Jr., Oswego, N.Y.) and Jessica Zenzel (Sr., Johnson City, N.Y.) followed Audley in the points column with five, as Borrow posted two goals and three assists, while Zenzel contributed one goal and four assists. Darcy and Martusewicz finished the contests with three scores each along with Amanda Hecox (Jr., New Hartford, N.Y.). Ryan White (Sr., Rockville Centre, N.Y.) paced Oswego State with three goals followed by a pair of goals from freshman Adam Jean (Tully, N.Y.). The Lakers, who fell to 4-7 overall and 0-2 in the SUNYAC, will start a four-game homestand on Wednesday against Potsdam at 4 p.m. The Red Dragons improved to 6-4 overall and 2-0 in the league.

Oneonta posted the first two goals of the game, but Oswego State rattled off three straight scores from the sticks of Jean, Andy Lever (So., Lindenhurst, N.Y.), and Andy Williams (So., Hamburg, N.Y.) to take a 3-2 lead after the first 15 minutes of play.

Ryan White gave the Lakers a 4-2 advantage 35 seconds into the second quarter before the Red Dragons out-scored Oswego State 7-1 before intermission for a four-goal halftime lead.

Oneonta continued to distance itself from the Lakers in the third with three more goals to make the score 12-6. The lone Oswego State goal came from White on a man-up opportunity with 5:49 on the clock. The game marked the fourth time this season that the Lakers have posted at least 20 goals in a game. Oswego State improved to 4-4 on the season, while Morrisville State dropped to 3-6 overall. The victory gives the Lakers momentum as they come back home for a four-game stretch beginning Tuesday against Cazenovia at 4 p.m.

It was another outstanding team effort for the Lakers, who boasted 14 goals in the first period. Eleven different players contributed to the scoring with Kristen Darcy (So., East Syracuse, N.Y.) leading the way with five goals. Bri Borrow (Jr., Oswego, N.Y.) also added three, while Jessica Zenzel (Sr., Johnson City, N.Y.), Stephanie Cronk (Fr., Endwell, N.Y.) and Kelly Collins (So., Fairport, N.Y.) all netted two a piece.

On two separate occasions, the Lakers went on a 5-0 run with Darcy netting three consecutive goals in the first stint.

Along with the strong offensive performance, the Lakers played well defensively allowing Morrisville only eight shot attempts in the first period and forcing the Mustangs to commit 17 turnovers. Oswego State headed into half-time with a decisive 14-3 lead.

The pace of the game slowed down in the second half, but the Lakers were too strong for Morrisville to make a come-back. Darcy added two more goals entering the half to give Oswego State a 13-point lead. The Lakers never let up and went on a 3-0 run to end the contest and solidify the 20-6 victory.

(Story Provided by Oswego State Sports Information)

Matthew A. The Lakers put on yet another strong offensive performance—with goals from nine different players—to defeat host Keuka 20-10. The Lakers improved to 3-4 with the victory, while the Storm dropped to 3-4 on the season.

The Lakers began the first half with intensity, scoring four consecutive goals in less than ten minutes. Marisa Audley (Sr., Liverpool, N.Y.)—who led all scorers with five goals and two assists—sparked the Lakers’ offense with the first goal. Bri Borrow (Jr., Oswego, N.Y.), Maria Martusewicz (Jr., Redwood, N.Y.) and Erin Cummings (So., Valley Cottage, N.Y.) followed suit to give the Lakers a 4-0 advantage.

Keuka retaliated with two goals, but Oswego State would not falter as it held on to the lead for the entire game. Coach Ostrander’s squad headed into intermission with a 10-5 advantage.

Oswego State controlled the tempo throughout the second half, allowing the Storm just 10 shot attempts, compared to its 20. The Lakers went on a 7-2 run entering the half, giving them a comfortable 17-7 lead with 14 minutes remaining. Despite the lead, the Lakers never let up on the offensive attack, scoring the final goal with just 30 seconds left in the contest.

It was an all-around team effort for the Lakers. Along with Audley’s five goals, Jessica Zenzel (Sr., Johnson City, N.Y.), Cummings and Borrow finished with three each. Martusewicz also contributed two goals and two assists.

Oswego State will travel to Morrisville on Saturday at 1:00 before returning home for a four-game stretch.

(Story provided by Oswego State Sports Information)

Matthew A. Co-captain Dan Scarazzo (Sr., Fairport, N.Y.) triggered the run with 9:38 remaining in the second quarter when he scored one of his game-high three goals in a man-down situation. Oswego State improved to 3-6 overall with the win, while the Mustangs fell to 5-2 overall.

The Lakers jumped on Morrisville in the first quarter as Adam Jean (Fr., Tully, N.Y.), Scarazzo, and Chad Smith (Fr., Fulton, N.Y.) each notched goals in the first 8:27 of play to give Oswego State a 3-0 edge. However, Eric Stein gave the Mustangs life with 5:09 on the clock in the first with his first of two unassisted goals on the day. Stein’s goal started a Morrisville stretch where it scored four straight goals until Scarazzo’s man-down goal tied the contest at 4-4. The Lakers closed out the half with four unanswered goals, including a second man-down goal by Scarazzo, for a 7-4 halftime lead.

Both teams were kept off the scoreboard for the majority of the third quarter until Brett Sarubbi (So., East Greenbush, N.Y.) found a cutting Andy Lever (So., Lindenhurst, N.Y.) with 5:55 remaining to put Oswego State ahead 8-4. Three minutes later, Nick Zoyhofski (Sr., Hamburg, N.Y.) made it a five-goal game after receiving a pass from Andy Williams (So., Hamburg, N.Y.).

Momentum carried over into the fourth quarter as Williams tacked on a goal of his own followed by a Mike Wiesenthal (Sr., Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) score. The Mustangs stopped the scoring string with 9:09 left in the game when Adam Lewis scored an unassisted goal. Williams and Jean rounded out the scoring for the Lakers for the 13-5 final.

Other goal scorers for Oswego State included Britt Leone (So., Schenectady, N.Y.), who also added a pair of assists, and Eric Zerrahn (Jr., Oswego, N.Y.). Neither squad was effective in man-up opportunities as Morrisville went 0-for-5 and allowed two man-down goals and the Lakers were 1-for-8. Oswego State goalie Judd Robinson (Sr., Guilderland, N.Y.) finished the game with ten saves and allowed five goals before Zach Harris (Sr., Fairport, N.Y.) and Tom Gropp (So., Fairport, N.Y.) came in to record a save each in the final eight minutes. Morrisville goalie Michael Hinchey finished with seven saves.

The Lakers wrap up a busy weekend tomorrow at SUNY Cobleskill with game time at 4 p.m.

(Story and Photo Provided by Oswego State Sports Information Department)

Matthew A. Senior midfielder Nick Zoyhofski (Hamburg, N.Y.) carried the bulk of the offense load for the Lakers as he tallied three goals. Oswego State fell to 2-6 overall and 0-1 in the SUNYAC, while Geneseo improved to 6-1 on the season and 1-0 in the league.

The Blue Knights appeared to be headed into the second quarter with a 2-1 lead before Chad Smith (Fr., Fulton, N.Y.) netted his fifth goal of the season with one second left on the clock. Geneseo went on to out-score the Lakers 3-1 in the second to take a 5-3 halftime lead.

Four different Blue Knights scored in the third quarter giving Geneseo a 9-3 lead heading into the final 15 minutes of play. Both squads were kept off of the scoreboard for most of the fourth until Zoyhofski posted his second goal of the game with 4:49 remaining after receiving a pass from Brad Teal (So., Williamsville, N.Y.). However, the Blue Knights would score three of the contest’s final four goals for a 12-5 victory.

Oswego State goalie Judd Robinson (Sr., Guilderland, N.Y.) recorded 18 saves, including seven in the fourth quarter, and seven groundballs. Geneseo goalie Dennis Costanza finished with 11 saves.

The Lakers return to action at home on Monday, April 5 against Morrisville at 1 p.m.

(Story provided by Oswego State Sports Information)

Matthew A. The visiting Red Dragons dropped the Lakers 17-4 at Laker Field following a strong first-half performance on Saturday afternoon. Oswego State fell to 2-4 on the season and 0-1 in conference play, while ninth-ranked Cortland improved to 6-1 and 2-0 in the SUNYAC.

Oswego State was never able to fall into its rhythm offensively. Despite holding an early 2-1 lead—with goals from Marisa Audley (Sr., Liverpool, N.Y) and Jessica Zenzel (Sr., Johnson City, N.Y.)—the Lakers could not get anything going from that point forward. The Red Dragons evened the score at two apiece, but that would be as close as Oswego State would get for the remainder of the contest.

With nearly 24 minutes remaining in the first half, Cortland took the lead and never looked back. The Red Dragons went on a 10-0 run and headed into halftime with a 12-2 lead.

The Lakers began the second period with some hope and quickly netted two more goals. It would not be enough however, as Cortland proved to be too strong. Game-leading scorer Maria Di Fato scored three of Cortland’s five goals in the second period to give the Red Dragons a 15-4 advantage. Fato finished with five goals and one assist followed by Nicki Mahoney, who added four goals and one assist for the Red Dragons.

Cortland added two more goals to solidify the 17-4 victory. The Lakers struggles were due largely to Cortland’s powerful defense. Oswego State took just eight shots on goal compared to the Red Dragons’ 32. Audley led the Lakers with two goals, while Zenzel and Maria Martusewicz (Jr., Redwood, N.Y.) contributed one each.

The Lakers will have time to recuperate before they travel to Keuka College on Thursday, April 8 for a 4 p.m. start.

(Story provided by Oswego State Sports Information)

Matthew A. Oswego State trailed 8-6 with the final period remaining before Jean scored four of his game-high six goals during an eight-minute span. The Lakers snapped a four-game skid with the win to improve to 2-5 overall, while the Pioneers fell to 1-6 on the season.

After a scoreless first quarter, Oswego State seized a 3-0 advantage early in the second with two goals from Jean and a goal from co-captain Dan Scarazzo (Sr., Fairport, N.Y.). The Lakers appeared to be headed into the intermission with a 5-3 lead, but Utica’s Michael Brodhead and Andrew Waite knotted the score in the final 1:09 in the second quarter.

The Pioneers came out strong in the third period as the duo of Brodhead and Waite struck again to put Utica ahead 7-5. Brad Teal pulled Oswego State to within one with 4:41 left in the quarter after receiving a pass from Britt Leone (So., Schenectady, N.Y.). However, the Pioneers’ Reed Reynolds tacked on another late goal, giving Utica an 8-6 edge going into the final frame. The Lakers clawed their way back into the game by taking advantage of numerous extra-man opportunities in the fourth, as three of Jean’s four goals in the final frame came with a man-up. Utica pressured the Oswego State defense late in the game, as the Pioneers made it a one-goal contest with 37 seconds remaining after another goal by Reynolds. However, Laker goalie Judd Robinson (Sr., Guilderland, N.Y.) was up to the challenge recording three of his seven total saves in the final five minutes. It was a physical game for both squads as Utica recorded over 22 penalty minutes resulting in five Oswego State goals compared to 5:30 for the Lakers, who gave up two goals in man-down situations.

(Story and Photo provided by the Oswego State Sports Information Department(

Matthew A. The Lakers had ten different players score goals, including six posting multi-goal performances, with Bri Borrow (Jr., Oswego, N.Y.) leading the way with five goals to go along with one assist. Oswego State, which improved to 2-3 overall, will open SUNYAC play on Saturday afternoon when it hosts Cortland at 1 p.m. The Express fell to 3-4 with the loss.

The Lakers took an early 3-0 lead behind a pair of goals from Kristen Darcy (So., East Syracuse, N.Y.) and a score from Borrow before Wells responded with a goal of its own. Both teams traded scores until Oswego State had its deciding scoring stretch midway through the first half that gave the Lakers an 11-2 lead. Maria Martusewicz (Jr., Redwood, N.Y.) fueled the string with three unassisted goals. Head coach Brandi Ostrander’s squad went on to hold a 16-4 lead at halftime.

Oswego State out-scored the Express 7-1 in the second half to cruise to the 23-5 victory. Darcy finished the game with four goals, while Marisa Audley (Sr., Liverpool, N.Y.) joined Martusewicz with a hat trick. Other Laker goal scorers included Kelly Collins (So., Fairport, N.Y.) and Amanda Hecox (Jr., New Hartford, N.Y.) with two goals apiece followed by Kelly Schroeder (Jr., Warwick, N.Y.), Jackie Cook (So., Webster, N.Y.), and Jessica Zenzel (Sr., Johnson City, N.Y.) with a goal each.

In her first collegiate appearance, Laker goalie Lauren Marois (Fr., Clifton Park, N.Y.) stopped seven shots and allowed five goals for the win. The Cardinals’ Mike Cummins recorded four goals in the contest as teammate Dave Malone compiled a team-best six points on two goals and four assists. Oswego State’s Andy Lever (So., Lindenhurst, N.Y.) and Dan Scarazzo (Sr., Fairport, N.Y.) tallied two goals and one assist each to pace the Lakers. Oswego State, which fell to 1-5 overall, will host Utica on Wednesday, March 31 at 7 p.m. at Oswego High School. St. John Fisher remained unbeaten on the season at 7-0 overall.

Dan Scarazzo netted the game’s first goal six seconds into the contest to get the home team and fans fired up after receiving a feed from Bobby Pattridge (So., Henrietta, N.Y.). The Lakers continued to feed off of the energy when Mike Wiesenthal (Sr., Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) put them ahead 2-0 seconds later with senior Ryan White (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) earning an assist.

However, the Cardinals scored nine straight goals between the first and second quarters before Chad Smith’s (Fr., Fulton, N.Y.) unassisted goal stopped the string with Oswego State trailing 9-3. St. John Fisher went on to take an 11-3 lead into halftime.

The Lakers closed out the contest strong adding goals from White, Scarazzo, and Andy Lever in the final eight minutes of the fourth quarter, but the damage had already been done as the Cardinals claimed the 19-8 win.

In addition to Lever and Scarazzo’s multi-point efforts, White finished with one goal and two assists followed by two goals from Wiesenthal. Oswego State goalie Judd Robinson (Sr., Guilderland, N.Y.) ended the day with 11 saves for the loss.

(Story provided by OSwego State Sports Information)

Matthew A. Oswego State held a slim 10-8 lead at the break, but scored the first three goals in the second period to separate itself from the Hawks, who would get no closer than four goals after that. Jessica Zenzel (Sr., Johnson City, N.Y.), Marisa Audley (Jr., Liverpool, N.Y.), and Rachael Raffa (So., Kings Park, N.Y.) combined to post 23 of the Lakers’ 39 points, which ranked as the second-highest single-game total in school history.
It was the first win of the season for Oswego State, which is now 1-2 overall, while Hartwick fell to 1-2. The Lakers will face Clarkson in Potsdam on Tuesday at 4 p.m

Head Coach Brandi Ostrander’s squad raced out to an early 3-0 lead in the first three minutes of the contest, but the Hawks made the score 4-3 four minutes later. Oswego State responded scoring six of the next eight goals to go ahead 10-5 with 8:07 remaining in the first period. However, Hartwick tallied three scores before the end of the frame to make the score 10-8 at halftime.

The Lakers started the second period strong as Kristen Darcy (So., East Syracuse, N.Y.), Zenzel, and Audley contributed goals in the first two minutes. Hartwick’s Hannah Kennedy countered quickly to cut the deficit to 13-9 before Oswego State rattled off seven goals in a span of less than ten minutes to put the game out of reach. The Hawks closed out the game strong with the contest’s final three goals, but the game was well in hand as the Lakers posted the 22-14 victory.

Audley finished the game with six goals and one assist, while Zenzel added five goals and three assists and Raffa contributed four goals and four assists for Oswego State. Nicole Nalle (So., Oswego, N.Y.) picked up the win in goal playing for 13:03 and allowing four goals before Ashlee Engel (Fr., Webster, N.Y.) stepped in to make 12 saves and allow 10 goals.

Hartwick was led offensively by Brittany LaVaute (So., Skaneateles, N.Y.), who registered five points on three goals and two assists. Emily Walsh (So., Cortland, N.Y.) also scored four goals, while Erica Scicchitano (Fr., Centerport, N.Y.) and Kennedy tallied three goals each. Oswego State finished the season with an overall record of 26-3-0, while St. Norbert advanced to the NCAA Championship with a record of 24-3-3 overall.

Few scoring opportunities existed in the first period as both teams gained a feel for each other and the Olympic-size rink. Oswego State went on the only power play of the frame in the early stages, but was unable to apply any pressure. At the end of the penalty, Mike Bernardy (Jr., Sandy, Utah) came out of the penalty box, picked up the puck at neutral ice to create the first scoring chance of the game. He ripped a wrist shot on the breakaway, but Laker goaltender Kyle Gunn-Taylor (Sr., West Seneca, N.Y.) made a right pad save to keep St. Norbert off of the scoreboard.

Late in the period, an Oswego State turnover at neutral ice resulted in Johan Ryd (So., Sodertalje, Sweden) picking up the puck for a 1-on-0 breakaway. He rifled a shot past Gunn-Taylor into the lower right portion of the net to give St. Norbert a 1-0 lead with 1:59 remaining in the first period. The Green Knights turned up the pressure on the Lakers in the waning seconds of the stanza, but the defense was able to keep St. Norbert from scoring as the score stood at 1-0 heading into intermission.

After play went back-and-forth for the majority of the second stanza, Eric Selleck (So., Spencerville, Ontario) carried the puck to the blue line before dumping the pass to Justin Fox (Jr., Whitby, Ontario) on the far right side. Fox laced a cross-ice to Neil Musselwhite (Sr., Burlington, Ontario), who gathered the puck before firing a wrist shot into the upper left-corner of the net over Green Knight goalie B.J. O’Brien’s (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.) stick at 17:14. It was Musselwhite’s 23rd goal of the season as the score was tied at 1-1 after two periods.

Whatever scoring was lacking in the first 40 minutes was made up for in abundance in the final frame. Early in the third, St. Norbert took advantage of an Oswego State boarding penalty when Matt Boyd’s shot for the slot ricocheted off the crossbar into open space where Tyler Allen (Sr., Midhurst, Ontario) flipped the puck into the net at 4:18. Less than a minute later, the Lakers evened the score when Fox received a pass on the right side from Chris Laganiere (Jr., Owego, N.Y). He faked a slap shot near the left face-off circle before sending a wrist shot into the left side of the net at the 5:12 mark.

The Green Knights regained the lead at 7:02 when they capitalized on an Oswego State turnover in the defensive zone. Scott Pulak (Jr., Green Bay, Wis.) fed Sam Tikka (Sr., Soldotna, Alaska) with a pass as he sent an uncontested shot through Gunn-Taylor’s five-hole to make the score 3-2.

Oswego State continued to fight until it tied the game again with 2:32 remaining when Paul Rodrigues (Fr., Etobicoke, Ontario) played the puck from behind the net to Jon Whitelaw (Fr., Huntsville, Ontario), who was in front of the net to pound home the goal.

The game appeared to be headed into overtime until another turnover at center ice lead to Cody Keefer (Fr., Grayling, Mich.) skating in for the breakaway and the game-winning goal with 39.4 seconds remaining on the clock. Head coach Ed Gosek called timeout after the score and pulled Gunn-Taylor for the extra attacker, but the Lakers were unable to put a shot on goal in the final seconds.

Oswego State’s Kyle Gunn-Taylor finished the game with 16 saves as he finished the season with a record of 18-2-0. St. Norbert’s B.J. O’Brien improved to 24-2-3 after registering 20 saves. The Lakers were 0-for-4 on the power play compared to the Green Knights, who were 1-for-2.

Notes
-Oswego State ended the year with one of the most successful seasons in school history as it set a new mark for highest winning percentage in school history at .897 after going 26-3-0. The previous mark was .883 (26-3-1), which was set in 1980-81.

-The Lakers are now 2-1-0 all-time against St. Norbert as Oswego State defeated the Green Knights 4-3 in overtime in the 2007 NCAA Semifinals and 4-3 on November 28, 2008 in DePere, Wis

(Story and Photo provided by Oswego State Sports Information Department)

-On a personal note I would like to thank the guys for a great season. Oswego won that game back in 2007 in OT on a goal by former Laker Captain Ryan Woodward. This year's battle will get underway at 4:00 pm Friday afternoon from the Herb Brooks Ice Arena in Lake Placid, NY, the site of the 1980 "Miracle on Ice".

St. Norbert comes into the matchup with a record of 23-3-3. The Green Knights defeated Gustavus Adolphus 3-1 last Saturday to make the Frozen Four. St. Norbert is led offensively by Senior forward Shane Wheeler. Wheeler has 31 points (13 G, 28 A) in 29 games played. Fellow Senior Tyler Allen has 30 points (14 G, 16 A) and Senior Matt Boyd has 28 points (9 G, 18 A). The Green Knights are led in net by Junior BJ O'Brien. O'Brien is 23-2-3 with a .923 save percentage and a Goals Against Avearge (GAA) of 1.58.

Oswego's road to Lake Placid only had one stop on the way... the Campus Center Ice Arena. The Lakers went perfect at home this season and that includes last Saturday's 9-2 defeat over Bowdoin in the Quarterfinals. The Lakers are 26-2-0 and Champions of the SUNYAC Conference. Oswego is led offensively by the line of Eric Selleck, Chris Laganiere and Justin Fox. Selleck has 53 points (21 Goals, 32 Assists) in just 27 games played. Owego's Chris Laganiere has 45 points (16 G, 29 A) as does Justin Fox (13 G, 32 A). The Lakers are led in net by West Seneca, NY native Kyle Gunn-Taylor. KGT has an overall record of 18-1-0 with a .918 save percentage and a Goals Against Average of 2.00

The winner of this matchup will meet the winners of the night cap game between Norwich and Plattsburgh for the National Title at 5:00 pm Saturday from Lake Placid.

(Story courtsy of Steve Petty Sports)

Matthew A. Senior assistant captain Neil Musselwhite paced the Laker offense with four goals, while sophomore defenseman Hank Van Boxmeer broke out for two goals and two assists in the victory. Oswego State, which improved to 26-2-0 overall, will face third-ranked St. Norbert on Friday, March 19 in Lake Placid, N.Y. at a time to be announced. The Polar Bears finished the season with an overall record of 19-7-1.

Bowdoin struck first by capitalizing on a pair of Oswego State charging penalties at 5:14 in the first period when Mike Corbelle’s (Sr., Byfield, Mass.) blast from the right point got past Laker netminder Kyle Gunn-Taylor (Sr., West Seneca, N.Y.). Captain Colin MacCormack (Sr., Bedford, Nova Scotia) was credited with an assist on the play as the Polar Bears quieted the crowd.

The Lakers evened the game two minutes later as both teams skated 4-on-4. Brad Dormiedy (Sr., Ajax, Ontario) moved the puck from the defensive zone to neutral ice before finding Neil Musselwhite (Sr., Burlington, Ontario), who was skating up the right side. Musselwhite got around the Polar Bear defender, moved through the crease, and got the backhand past Bowdoin goaltender Chris Rossi (Sr., Barrington, R.I.). The Polar Bears gained another two-skater advantage later in the period, but Oswego State was able to kill both penalties and keep the score knotted at 1-1.

It would not be until late in the period when the Lakers seized the lead for good. Luke Moodie (Fr., Burlington, Ontario) carried the puck deep into the Bowdoin defensive zone before finding Eric Selleck (So., Spencerville, Ontario) at the right face-off circle. As a Polar Bear player went down to block the shot, Selleck passed over to Hank Van Boxmeer (So., Orange, Calif.), whose blast from the blue line found its way through traffic at 14:38 to put Oswego State ahead 2-1.

Van Boxmeer struck again early in the second period with six seconds remaining on a Laker power play when he ripped a slap shot that popped Rossi’s water bottle off of the top of the net. Matt Singleton (Fr., Brooklin, Ontario) and Moodie received assists on the goal that gave Oswego State a 3-1 edge. The Lakers took advantage of a Bowdoin line change at the 7:34 mark with seven seconds left in another Oswego State power play when Musselwhite’s slap shot from the left face-off went off of Rossi’s glove, and bounced into the air behind Rossi into the net. Gunn-Taylor was credited with an assist on the play for his first career point.

Minutes later, Dormiedy carried the puck across the blue line, ripped a slap shot past Rossi after faking a pass to Musselwhite on the left side to give the Lakers a four-goal lead midway through the second period. The goal prompted Bowdoin head coach Terry Meagher to call timeout and switch Rossi for Richard Nerland (So., Calgary, Alberta).

However, the change did not slow down the Oswego State offense as Musselwhite completed the hat trick at 17:47 in the middle stanza when Dormiedy drew the Bowdoin defender on a 2-on-1 rush before passing to his linemate for the tap-in goal.

The Lakers closed out the second period with their third power-play goal of the game when Justin Fox (Jr., Whitby, Ontario) deflected a Tyler Lyon (Sr., Foxboro, Ontario) slap shot past Nerland to give Oswego State a 7-1 lead at intermission.

Midway through the third period, Musselwhite tacked on his fourth goal of the game when he and Chris Laganiere (Jr., Owego, N.Y.) traded passes back-and-forth during an odd-man rush. B owdoin answered seconds later, though, when Rob MacGregor (Fr., Collegeville, Pa.) flipped the puck over Gunn-Taylor’s left shoulder at 10:49 with assists going to Kyle Shearer-Hardy (Jr., Montreal, Quebec) and Brendan Reich (Jr., Montvale, N.J.) to make the score 8-2. The final Oswego State goal came at the 12:50 mark when Van Boxmeer laced a two-line pass through center ice to Tyler Leimbrock (Fr., Bolton, Ontario) in stride, as he skated in on Nerland unabated for the goal. Michael Gilchrist (Fr., Rochester, N.Y.) also earned an assist.

The Lakers finished the game 3-for-7 on the power play compared to the Polar Bears, who went 1-for-8 with the skater advantage, including 1-for-6 in the first period. Oswego State out-shot Bowdoin 33-23, but that differential occurred solely in the second stanza as the Lakers owned a 16-4 shot advantage.

Oswego State’s Kyle Gunn-Taylor improved to 18-1-0 on the season after stopping 21 shots and allowing two goals. The Polar Bears’ Chris Rossi recorded 17 saves on 22 shots, while Richard Nerland finished with seven saves on 11 shots. Musselwhite’s four-goal performance tied the NCAA championship record for most goals in a single game, which has occurred on four previous occasions with the most recent taking place in 1997 when Norwich’s Curt Healy posted four goals against Plattsburgh.

The Lakers, who are advancing to the NCAA semifinal game for the first time since 2007, will face St. Norbert on Friday, March 19. St. Norbert defeated Gustavus Adolphus 3-1 to earn a spot in Lake Placid.

(Photo adn Story provided by Oswego State Sports Information Department)

Matthew A. The competition will be conducted in an East versus West format with each team having six male position players, six female position players, two male goaltenders and two female goaltenders as part of the festivites at the 2010 NCAA Division I Men's Hockey Frozen Four. Musselwhite, who was the only Division III men’s hockey player to be named to the East and West final roster, will compete in the fastest skater challenge.

Musselwhite has been known around the league for his speed during his four-year career at Oswego State, but made a national splash on December 4 when he tallied three short-handed goals in a span of 2:59 against Brockport. He is believed to be just the third player in college hockey history to achieve a natural short-handed hat trick. Musselwhite is currently second on the squad with 18 goals and leads all NCAA Divisions with six short-handed goals.

Musselwhite was speechless when told the news at practice on Wednesday, but would like to thank all of the Oswego State fans who voted for him over a two-week period as selection to the team was partially based on those fan votes.

Other members of the men's East squad include Sean Backman, Yale; Bobby Butler, New Hampshire; Owen Meyer, Army; Ben Smith, Boston College and Brandon Wong, Quinnipiac. The two goalies are: Jared DeMichiel, RIT and Ben Scrivens, Cornell.

The No. 2-Lakers will host No. 6-Bowdoin in the NCAA Division III Men's Hockey Quarterfinals on Saturday, March 13 at 7 p.m. at the Campus Center Arena in Oswego. Tickets are available for the contest and may be purchased by calling 315-312-3073.

Story provided by the Oswego State Sports Information Department

Matthew A.
