The links are search refinements and disabling them doesn't turn off ratings for Google search, it only stops the refinement links from appearing again.

I can and do take responsibility for everything on my computers. Since I build the computers that I use, I am well aware of many of the pitfalls. Quite frankly, the worst that can happen in the case of malware or viruses is that I have to completely wipe the hard drives and reinstall the OS. However, I keep backups of all important files so it only costs me a couple of hours to do this.

As for your suggestion that the advice being offered is not from experts, I do not know if the advice is expert or not but I have the capacity to investigate and confirm whether the advice being offered is worth using. Whilst the forum is not a dedicated malware removal forum, I see no difficulty with using the forum to impart such advice as might be requested.

BTW Men are not pets.

I have noticed after i Google something say cars..when the results page opens at the top of the page there is now an option to turn off WOT.it looks like this..
WOT safe search [x] in grey writing. This dose not happen on my mums PC? We both use the latest FireFox..Can anybody tell me what this is please or if i have just missed something in a WOT update...

My son was in the toilet when his classmate used his notebook to send out the email. Nobody replied, and the classmate deleted it from the sent items folder. Until recently the tech expert wanted to dig up the old scores and sent my son an email regarding the matter.

Yes, this sounds really weird, but it's true. Thanks Bob, I will tell my son to keep his notebook "at bay". Regarding the enabling of the BIOS password, I will ask my colleagues at the IT department for help.

I don't want to blow the thing up, what if I tell the tech expert about the consequences and he really doesn't care and tries to do funny things?

Why did your son give his notebook to this person? Or did this person get on it when your son wasn't aware?

Two simple solution possibilities: 1) Tell your son not to give his notebook to this person and keep it in his sight at all times, and/or 2) Enable a BIOS password.

As far as the current "deeeeeep trouble", how about having your son explain the circumstances of the "unauthorized" use to this "tech expert" person?

In newer version of Windows can be resolved using Startup Repair, or restoring the Registry in Safe Mode with Command Prompt.

Thank you for your replies. I've got another problem, my son's classmate sent out an email using my son's notebook. It was really hateful and meant against that tech expert classmate. Which explains why my son is in deeeeeeeep trouble. The little tech expert wants to expose my SON of sending that email, all owning to one IP address, and that also explains the thread that I had posted a day earlier.

Downloading a copy of the installer as I write this, and will update with a screenshot of the installer once it's done (Ask toolbar from what I recall, is 32bit only btw, which is likely why it doesn't show on 64bit systems)

Oh and, the "free" version is both limited to copying CD's/DVD's, burning CD/DVD, and is forced registration. NONE of the other features from the full version, are present (again, this is stated on the site)

I'm not going to bother explaining these things. This is a short list of where I'd check first:

-- Hosts file (in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc)
-- Registry load points (your HijackThis log will give you these)
-- Unexpected, running services (using services.msc)
-- Unexpected, running applications (using Process Explorer)
-- Firefox settings (see http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Resetting+pref... for instructions)

Sounds like a pretty basic hijack. Should be easy to fix, and in the meantime you can add the following line to your local Hosts file to block that site:

(whatever the domain name is).com 127.0.0.1

Please, for future reference, include the actual domain name or URL.

The ISP knows the customer's billing and service address, and can associate that to the account. The ISP would have to correlate the user of a particular IP address at a particular time to the customer's records. It isn't impossible.

It's not hard to imagine a scenario where a bit of payoff to the right IT employee at an ISP can get you what you need. After all, that's exactly what those private investigators in LA were doing with cellphone companies in order to get call records. Once you know a guy on the inside and can manipulate him, the records can be stolen by the insider and provided to the outsider.

Phone browsers can, in some cases, report GPS coordinates back to Websites. As an example, Google can query the GPS coordinates of an Android based phone in order to give you geographically-relevant search results. I know because I own one, and they openly acknowledge they do this.

But otherwise, geolocation databases are horrible indicators of the physical location of a particular home/broadband IP Address. Those used for businesses are more accurate, but only to the data center, typically, in my experience.

You're right, it is ridiculous. That only works if the classmate gets the info from the ISP. Otherwise, it only works as close as said above.

He cannot himself steal the IP, but what he could do in theory is writing bad software that does bad stuff from your computer (such as uploading illegal materials on the web). That way it would be your IP that is logged. But the porbability that that happens is about zero. He most likely simply can't do that.

My son's classmate who is a tech expert loves to threaten people with their IP addresses. He would always say, "Do you want me to pin down crimes with your IP?" or "I'm sure your IP is of very good use to me one day, when you begin to bully me" or probably "I'm sure you don't know this, but I can track your IP address all the way to your front doorstep!"

I think this is ridiculous (what my son's classmate said) upon reading the above comments. But if that particular classmate is so advanced as to purchase or create software to do such things, would it be extremely dangerous?

Malware Removal experts have initial boilerplate responses that they can cut and paste quickly. Reading a HJT Log for evidence of infection, based on the user's stated symptoms, doesn't take much time either. 99% of the infections are pretty ho-hum and they've seen it before, so coming up with a first step is boilerplate too. Consequently, the initial response doesn't take all that much time.

If the user responds with additional requested logs (like SAS, ComboFix, SmitFraudFix, etc., that's when it may take some time, and is why boards ask, and I said, STICK with the first response. Yes, if a user keeps multiple malware removal experts working on it from different boards, it does indeed waste the malware removal expert's valuable time.

BTW, here are some excerpts from one of the malware removal boards:

"Do not bump or add additional posts to your thread" before a response.

"don't start another message for the same problem or ask why your thread is not getting answered"

"A new post will not get answered before your original post anyway since we work in queue order. Thus it does not help you."

"We are way too busy to waste time trying to read poorly formatted hard to understand messages and may even refuse to answer your message if they are written this way."

As you can see, these "rules" are designed to conserve the limited time available because there are so few malware removers.

Good question about the OP . . . so maybe h/she took our advice and went to a malware removal forum.

I wrote a bookmarklet that I dub "SaveChan" that when I click on it, opens each image post's image in a new tab that is on the current *chan page.

I like opening a giant blob of images from a chan thread, but I notice that Chrome only opens the first 35, unlike Firefox who does it correctly (though 300 images may take 10-12 seconds).

Does anyone know of this apparent open-at-once limit, or is it just me?

Ratings do appear when I added the the same google search (google.com/intl/en/) in the search engines list when I search.

I changed the original google search (google.com) in my search engines list to google.com/intl/en/ because I always wanted to make my search in english and not my local language using the "add to search bar" firefox plug-in.

Ratings work when I search from the search engine but not on its homepage (google.com/intl/en/).

Please show WOT ratings on the results page of this search site (google.com/intl/en/).

I use Google Chrome but I stick with a little older dev version because usually the very latest beta breaks too much (for example, the latest 4.0.237 turns off all the extensions again.)

My WOT auto-updated to 0.8 which will only work with Chrome 4.0.226 and later, but there isn't a Chrome 4.0.226 install downloadable anywhere I can find. I've checked FileHippo's archives and Googled extensively, and sadly no backup copies of that version are to be found. As an added bonus, you removed your links to older versions of WOT from mywot.com/wiki/Chrome and are only supplying 0.8 and older source code.

Please keep at least the last version as well as the current on hand for those of us who know better than to jump into the latest beta and break everything. Now I can't use WOT and I feel naked and unsafe when on the web, but I'll be damned if I go back to Firefox or *shudder* IE.

I've been reading up on some articles about the security risk posed by non-encrypted updates for Firefox extensions. Then, I checked out my Adblock Plus subscriptions and the subscriptions page for Adblock Plus at http://adblockplus.org/en/subscriptions. It hit me that these subscriptions are not required to use SSL encryption! I believe some of the Adblock Plus subscriptions use encryption and some don't.

For example, if you subscribe to the Malware Domains subscription, it subscribes to the list at http://malwaredomains.lanik.us/malwaredomains_full... and downloads that file for updates.

However, there is no encryption for this URL, which means that it is vulnerable to a man in the middle attack where someone could alter the file in transit. For example, a possible scenario for attack would be if you are on a public wireless hotspot and Adblock Plus does a subscription update. A hacker could be on the same hotspot with a packet sniffer and watch for requests to known subscription locations. The hacker could then spoof packets for the update file and you would not know that it occurred. This could seriously mess with the workings of Adblock Plus and poses a security risk.

Anyone have thoughts on this? Should I unsubscribe from the Malware Domains list until it gets SSL encryption?

I am thinking of rating the entire base blacklist from Joe Wein. This list is roughly five megabytes and contains 303899 domains currently.

I wonder, is doing this useless? Are the domains in the base list "gone already", or are they picked off when they are closed down? Should I only rate the "new addition" domains?

Also, so far for big lists like the Conficker one (roughly ninety thousand), I have been using Firebug to set a timer to automatically fire the "submit" button on the mass rating so I don't have to click every 10 seconds. Will you implement a way to accept larger increments than 100 ratings at a time?

I've seen the ratings of Brothersoft.com which is telling me not to trust it. Newsweek Magazine recently listed Finland as a "leading indicator"

I use WOT and thought I could trust when it gave a website the green icon. However, I went to one of my favorite gospel singer's website, which I thought it was, but it turned out to be MySpace..

Hi,all. Can somebody help please i logged in to my Hotmail account this morning no problem but when i tried to log out i was redirected to a page that said you must allow Third party cookies in your browser? This is FireFox i have never ticked the allow third party cookies box and this has never happened before? So to sign out it tells me to close all browsers..I have no problem with IE8 signing out, But i never use it..Im just a little concerned because of the Hotmail passwords being leaked the other week..

I've recently stumbled upon a Firefox extension called Request Policy: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/972...

By default, it blocks all cross site script, image, css, etc. requests. It allows you to whitelist cross site requests on a site by site basis. It is similar to NoScript, but whereas NoScript handles the blocking of scripts and plugins, Request Policy handles the blocking of all the other HTML content on a web page.

It is a great extension for the truly paranoid. And yes, I have it installed and am using it right now. It is especially useful to protect against cross script request forgery (CSRF) attacks where a script from an hostile external domain can steal your cookie credentials.

There is one bug I have encounter, but it is a minor one. You must have the status bar in Firefox enabled or the Request Policy menu can't be activated. But besides that, it's a solid program.

Is the "poor reputation" for political reasons? This website is good, without any relation to the political party you might support.. Sad to see what I thought to be a good application, taking this turn.... Not child safe? Very disappointing.
I guess the rating is based on people's votes... but have you thought the case of people using this option to boycott websites? No that this question relates directly with this case, but I'm surprised at this find and would like an answer to how you rate websites and if you never check the votes to be valid somehow.

You may know Zango, or even ZangoCash.

Zango is the type of software you'd get by forgetting to uncheck a checkbox somewhere or just installing the wrong software. It's adware combined with spyware that shows pop-ups based on your behavior, and occasionally hijacks your browser.

ZangoCash is a pay-per-install website. If you don't know what that is: Basically you sign up for an account, and Zango gives you all sorts of neat stuff like games that you can play or put on your website. And every time someone installs it, you get money! Wow! Less neat is the fact that it comes bundled with Zango.

ZangoCash seems to be known around here, judging from the deep-red scorecard. The site recently went down, but, alas, it resurfaced as pinballpublishernetwork.com (scorecard). It's a less obvious PPI site, but I suspect it's still the same thing inside.

Need proof? At the moment, hxxp://zangocash.com/ is redirecting to the new site, probably so they don't lose users.
