Markets and Enterprise: Intern, Investment Implications of Water Scarcity The Envest Initiative

The World Resources Institute (WRI) Markets and Enterprise Program seeks a highly motivated intern for its Envest team. The Envest intern will play a key research and writing role in WRI’s work on the financial implications of water scarcity.

WRI is a leading non-profit institute providing analysis, tools, and environmental solutions (see www.wri.org) The Envest team (www.wri.org/project/envest) works in partnership with global financial institutions and companies to provide leading environmental and finance research and analysis. The program seeks to build capacity and tools to assess and integrate environmental risk and opportunities into financial valuation and investment strategy.

Water scarcity trends and policies are a priority research area for the Envest team. The Envest intern will be working on the investment risks in the mining sector presented by water scarcity. The mining sector analysis will feed into the development of a standard approach to account for water-related investment risks.

Ultimately the objective of all Envest research is to integrate environmental factors in investment decision-making, thus improving long-term returns on capital. In this case, the focus is on scaling up capital formation around water saving technologies, and informing business lobbying efforts for integrated water resources management.

This position reports to the Director of Envest.

People & Ecosystems: EV-GIS Interns

The World Resources Institute (WRI) seeks two results-oriented professionals or graduate students to conduct corporate ecosystem valuations using standard valuation or GIS methodologies. The interns will work under the direction of a senior environmental economist and provide research, analytical, organizational, writing, and communication support to the implementation of four corporate ecosystem valuations that are part of the WRI’s Business & Ecosystems Project (www.wri.org/ecosystems/esr).

These are part-time, temporary internships and may fill research requirements for some university programs. There is a possibility of full-time work with WRI upon completion of this internship.

A key conclusion of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment was that the earth’s wetlands, forests, coral reef and other ecosystems have been degraded. And, left unchecked, they will become worse over the next 50 years. Because businesses both depend on and impact the ecosystem services these areas provide—forests provide timber, freshwater, natural hazard regulation and a host of other services—this degradation has direct relevance to corporate performance. However, most companies fail to make the connection between healthy ecosystems and their bottom lines.

The Corporate Ecosystem Services Review (ESR) is a systematic methodology that helps managers develop strategies to manage their risks and opportunities arising from their company’s dependencies and impacts on ecosystems. Since its launch in March, 2008, the Review has been used by an estimated 150-300 Fortune 500-caliber companies. These experiences demonstrate (1) that current decision making tools can be improved by integrating ecosystem services into them and (2) that valuation of ecosystem services can be useful in the corporate context. However, there are few guidelines to help managers integrate valuation into their decision making systems.

The World Business Council for Sustainable Development’s Ecosystem Valuation Initiative is developing these guidelines. WRI’s role in this effort is to “road-test” the draft guidelines in 3-5 companies. The Ecosystem Services Valuation and GIS Intern will assist the Business & Ecosystems Project conduct and report on these corporate ecosystem valuations.

It also seeks to inform and influence the UNFCCC and related international processes that link climate change and forest protection to address the challenges of improving governance of forests (including the World Bank Forest Carbon Partnership Facility, UN REDD). Finally, GFI also seeks to engage with and build upon existing processes to improve forest governance including the EU Forest Law Enforcement Governance and Trade program.

GFI is implemented in partnership with Instituto Centro de Vida and IMAZON in Brazil, and involves close partnerships with a wide range of international and local civil society organizations around the world. This interdisciplinary project leverages the expertise and networks of staff in WRI’s Institutions and Governance Program, Climate and Energy Program, and its People and Ecosystems Program.

World Resources Report: Managing Editor, 2010 World Resources Report

WRI is looking for a Managing Editor to lead the writing and editing of a new edition of its World Resources Report. The theme of World Resources 2010 will be climate change adaptation.

WRI has produced 12 volumes of WRR over the last 25 years. It has traditionally taken the form of a 200+ page authoritative volume on a varying topic in the field of environment and development. The Managing Editor will work with the Director to continue the WRR publication tradition but in a fresh format that more directly involves audiences and convenes influence targets early on as part of the research and writing process.

Like the WRRs of the past, the WR2010 will have a specific theme: climate change adaptation. The Managing Editor will be expected to be highly knowledgeable about adaptation as he/she advances the discourse around this theme. The Managing Editor will rotate with every topic, the position is a full-time, term position for approximately 15-18 months.

The Managing Editor will ensure the relevance and quality of the pieces produced as part of WR2010. WR2010 is a joint project of WRI, UNDP, UNEP, the World Bank, and other sponsoring agencies. These institutional partners play a critical role in designing the work and helping the Report to reach its key audiences. It is therefore expected that the Managing Editor work closely with the partners throughout the process.

As currently conceived, World Resources 2010 will be built around a draft concept paper that lays out a series of key questions to be addressed about climate change adaptation. Working papers will then be commissioned to tackle these specific questions. The Managing Editor will support the Director in convening forums both in person and digitally to discuss and debate these working papers. The outputs from these convenings will be combined with the working papers into a synthetic final volume that includes policy recommendations based upon these earlier outputs.

The Director will take the lead in refining and executing this new approach.

Like the WRRs of the past, World Resources 2010 (WR2010) will have a specific theme: climate change adaptation. The Director will be expected to have some knowledge about adaptation as he/she leads the WRR team to advance the discourse around this theme.

The Director will work with the Managing Editor—the topic expert—to ensure the relevance and quality of the pieces produced as part of the World Resources Report, and will maintain overall coordinating authority over the content, appearance, and budget of the production.
People & Ecosystems: Project Manager, Congo Basin Forests and Climate

The People & Ecosystems Program at the World Resources Institute (WRI) seeks a results-oriented project manager to lead WRI activities at the nexus of forests and climate in the Congo Basin. To begin, the successful candidate will lead a three-year project to improve detection (via remote sensing) and quantification of deforestation, forest degradation, and the associated carbon emissions in the forests of Cameroon and the Republic of Congo. In addition, the project will build the capacity of local institutions and government agencies to conduct this measurement and monitoring on an ongoing, consistent basis.

People & Ecosystems: ESR Research Analyst

The World Resources Institute (WRI) seeks a results-oriented individual with a master’s degree, experiences with corporate sustainability, and exposure to ecosystem services for a full-time position. The Research Analyst will provide analytical, research, writing, communication, and organizational support to WRI’s Business & Ecosystems Project in their efforts to mainstream ecosystem service-based strategies in the private sector (www.wri.org/ecosystems/esr).

The Corporate Ecosystem Services Review (ESR) is a systematic methodology that helps managers develop strategies to manage their risks and opportunities arising their company’s dependencies and impacts on ecosystems. Since its launch is March, 2008, the Review has been used by an estimated 150-300 Fortune 500-caliber companies. All note the ESR’s ability to uncover new risks and opportunities. Over the next 18 months, the Research Analyst will assist the Business & Ecosystems Project:

Promote the methodology globally

Conduct Reviews in the utility, agriculture, and forestry sectors

Train environmental consultants on the methodology

Develop guidelines for integrating the ESR with corporate decision making tools and systems

Develop new improved methodologies, systems, and guidelines

Implement projects with corporate, government, and civil society partners

Analyze policies that align corporate performance with ecosystem stewardship

Write papers, briefs, and case studies on the utility and application of ecosystem services to corporate decision making

Markets & Enterprise: Program Director

The World Resources Institute (WRI) is seeking a Director to lead its Markets & Enterprise Program. WRI’s work in this area has focused on the role of the private sector in tackling some of the world’s most pressing environmental and social problems. The Institute has been a pioneer in this field, building a portfolio of ground-breaking initiatives that aim to influence capital markets, investment flows, and enterprise development to achieve greater sustainability. The program is well positioned to grow and increase its level of impact.

The program’s work is currently clustered around the following areas of work:

New Ventures: New Ventures supports small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that drive sustainable development through “green” products and services in six of the world’s most dynamic emerging economies: Brazil, China, Colombia, India, Indonesia and Mexico. Since its inception in 1999, New Ventures has provided business development and investor engagement services for over 200 SMEs, leading to nearly $200 million of investment into these companies. Looking forward, New Ventures will focus on ensuring that its six local centers are financially and institutionally self-sustaining and that its research and analysis leverages significant investment flows into three sectors: clean energy, clean water and sustainable agriculture.

Envest: Envest provides forward-looking, applied financial research that translates complex environmental trends into financial terms useful to investors (“environmental intelligence for tomorrow’s markets”). In this way, Envest helps investors identify, quantify, and communicate the financial value of environmentally superior business strategies. Ultimately, Envest will strive for a transformative shift in private-sector investment decisions by demonstrating the financial relevance of climate, energy, water and forest issues.

The Program Director will lead a multidisciplinary team of 15+ staff and 1) provide overall strategic direction to the program; 2) lead fundraising and management of a budget of over three million USD; and 3) act as external spokesperson for WRI’s business work, presenting MEP work at external events, positioning him/herself as an expert in this field. The position requires a strong strategic mindset and in-depth knowledge of environment, development and private sector issues. On the latter, the successful candidate will know how to best relate to MEPs target audience which includes investors, entrepreneurs, multinational companies, and NGOs in developing countries. In addition, the candidate should be comfortable operating in a results-focused culture. The position is located at WRI’s headquarters in Washington DC and reports to the Executive Vice President/Managing Director. The successful candidate will be expected to travel internationally. This is a challenging position that offers a unique opportunity to have a major impact on environmental sustainability issues.

The World Resources Institute (WRI) is seeking a Director to lead its Envest Initiative. This initiative is based in WRI’s Markets & Enterprise Program which focuses on the intersection between environmental sustainability and the private sector. The program provides cutting-edge research and related activities for investors and companies to integrate sustainability into their decisions and therefore help solve the earth’s most pressing environmental problems.

The Director plays a key role in the Markets & Enterprise Program and leads a team and a body of work that focuses on the practices of large investors, financial analysts and corporations. The work builds on WRI’s strong 10-year track record in this area, and WRI’s intention is to grow this work over time. We aim to make a significant contribution to how investors and corporations perceive environmental trends and adjust their strategies accordingly.

The Envest Director will develop the research and influence strategy and implement a portfolio of projects. S/he will execute and refine Envest’s strategic plan that sets priorities and guides the Program’s initiatives which include: integration of environmental risks and opportunities into equity analysis, capital formation for clean technologies, and greening corporate supply chains.

The Envest Director will guide and lead a team of associates and analysts. Envest works in partnership with a number of financial institutions, and the Director helps to develop and manage these relationships.
