Spotlight On: Spring Fishing Programs!

As spring moves forward, the Recreation Department is abuzz with planning for upcoming, outdoor programs.

On Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend, the Department of Public Safety, Recreation Department & Pemi Chapter of Trout Unlimited unite to host our 5th Annual 'Youth Fishing Derby' - details, including flyer with registration form, are online at our website.

Be sure to check-in on our event on Facebook & like our page!

Also this spring, back by popular demand...'Fly-Fishing Clinic' presented by our friends, the incredible instructors at the Pemi Chapter of Trout Unlimited.

The clinic is a 4-day (Saturdays) event, and includes classroom instruction and on-the-water training. Participants from last years clinic complimented the level and quality of instruction, going so far as to say it "outclassed" a similar program they paid hundreds of dollars to attend, at a well-known fly-fishing school.

Spotlight On: Indoor Climbing Wall!

Our Indoor Climbing Wall is Now Open Saturday Evenings, 7 pm - 9 pm!

The Indoor Climbing Wall at the Waterville Valley Recreation Department is designed to challenge climbers of all abilities. Our routes change frequently, so if you haven't visited us recently, stop in for a new challenge. The climbing wall is part of the Resort's 'Freedom Pass' program - if you're staying at a participating lodge, be sure to bring your pass for complimentary admission. Remember, sneakers are required (no barefoot/winter boots permitted on the wall), so don't forget to throw them in your gear bag before heading out. This is a perfect way to spend some quality family time...we look forward to seeing you this weekend!

Haunted Halloween Happenings

The WVRD celebrates Halloween 2013 with the Pemi Valley Chamber of Commerce' 'Valley Witch Fest' on Friday & Saturday, October 25th & 26th. On Friday, kids ages 6+ come to the Rec for our 'Haunted Fun Night Out' - gym games, pizza party & pumpkin carving/decorating; pre-registration is required, so please call us at (603) 236-4695 or email us at recreationinquiry@watervillevalley.org.

Parents (well, really anyone; kids not required!): Sweep on over to the Waterville Valley Conference Center after dropping your kiddos at the Rec, and be part of the 'Mountain Masquerade' & annual chamber dinner.

On Saturday, spend the day in the Town Square with our Mystical Extravaganza and Vampire Vineyards Wine Tasting (21+, please!) before joining us at the Rec (promptly at 4 pm) for our youth costume contest & Schuss Bus Trick-or-Treating. The haunting good time continues well into the night, with the 'Spellbound Soiree with Comic Hypnotist Frank Santos Jr' (21+) at The Lantern in Town Square. Tickets are still available online; limited tickets will be available at the door. Afterwards, head down to Legends for their namesake Brewgala and adult costume party at 10:30 pm.

The Recreation Department continues to expand adult program offerings. This October, join us for some local favorites or stop by and try something new. 'Tech at the Rec' continues on Monday afternoons. On Tuesday evenings, join us for pick-up 'Pickleball' and on Friday mornings, we're offering 'Yoga'.

And if you're looking for something a little different, travel outside of the Valley on one of our many field trips. This month's destinations include music and theatre performances at Plymouth State University.

Waterville Valley's Amazing Race

Pre-register for this year's 'Amazing Race', on Saturday, July 27th. Our annual race will take teams of 2 (3 brackets; Adult = both team members age 18+, Youth = both team members ages 10 - 17; Mixed = one team member age 10 - 17 & one member 18+) on a self-guided tour of the Valley (& surrounding area), deciphering clues to move from waypoint-to-waypoint, competing in mini-challenges along the way.

Independence Day Parade, Thursday, July 4: 11 am

Spectators: Grab a seat on the green in front of Town Square, or at any point on the 'short loop' around town. Meet with WV's very own 'Bruce the Moose' in the Town Square. The parade begins & ends in the Conference Center parking lot.

Float Entries: Please meet Recreation staff at the Conference Center parking lot at 10:30 am, for parade line-up. The 'crowd favorite' float entry wins bragging rights, & the 'Spirit Cup' trophy.

Bikers, Marchers, Scooters, etc...: Please meet Recreation staff on Packard Field at 10 am, to decorate your bike, scooter, etc... Kids, please be sure to have a parent/guardian accompany you to the field, as we kindly ask that they sign you into the parade & sign-out following the parade. All are welcome to participate!

Independence Day Fireworks, Thursday, July 4: 9 pm

Spectators: Find the best views from Town Square or Packard Field.

Independence Day Weekend Family Carnival, Saturday, July 6 in Town Square: 11 am - 3 pm

Join us for our annual summer carnival with inflatables, games, tie-dye craft, face painting, discounted boat rentals, live music, BBQ & special appearance by 'Mo the Balloon Buffoon'. $10/wristband includes inflatables, tie-dye craft, visit with Mo & face painting. Summer arrives at the WVRD in a big way on Monday, June 24th, with the start of 10-weeks of non-stop, daily programming & events.

Kids ages 4 - 15 join us for our 'Summer Day Camp', held Monday thru Friday, 9 am - 4 pm. And, for our older (12 - 15 y.o.) crowd, we hear ya' & we're responding in a BIG way, with the addition of 2 more camp counselors to provide a unique SUMMIT camp experience, separate from our PEAK group. Teens ~ come check us out!

Plus, we've got our usual line-up of recurring daily & evening programs, and a few new things, like 'Tech @ the Rec' clinics & Saturday night 'Laser Tag' in the gym. Don't forget daily boat rentals at Corcoran Pond (weather permitting) and the addition of 'Stand-Up Paddle Boards' (SUP's) & a 4-person, 4-pedal, pedal boat to our fleet!

Youth Fishing Derby Wrap-Up | Winners, Trout Unlimited Supporter of the Year

On behalf of the Town of Waterville Valley Public Safety Department, Recreation Department & Trout Unlimited, congratulations to all of this year's fishing derby winners. Some great prizes were awarded for some spectacular catches; thanks to all who came out to participate this past Memorial Day Weekend.

Despite the wind & rain, 125 brave anglers adorned the shores of Corcoran Pond (in fact, 64 of them registered that morning, in the rain) ~ a great turn-out for sure!

Thank you to all our partners and event sponsors, including WVAIA, WV Foundation, The Margret & H.A. Rey Center, Town Square, WV Resort & others.

This year, we awarded our first-ever "Supporter of the Year Award" to our dear friends at the Pemigewasset Chapter of Trout Unlimited. Since the inception of the derby program in 2010, Trout Unlimited has been an integral partner, providing the service of measuring fish, aiding youth anglers (and their parents), and sharing their knowledge and passion for fishing with today's youth. Thank you Trout Unlimited!

As of this writing (Friday, May 24), we are well aware that the weather forecast for NH this Memorial Day Weekend is not full of sun & high temps ~ NO WORRIES! We are prepared to run this event rain or shine & we hope that you are too!

At our annual Town Meeting on Tuesday, March 12, we introduced a 'Community Needs Assessment', to help us get a feel of how you think we're doing and to help us identify your program needs and interests.

Marc Paul Decoteau Jersey Palooza

A Waterville Valley son, Marc Paul Decoteau, was killed on Friday, Jan. 29, 2010 while serving and protecting our country.

On Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013 starting at 7 p.m., Marc’s family and friends will gather at Legends Sports Bar in the Waterville Valley Town Square for a Jersey Palooza!

Legends will be honoring Marc by hanging his Plymouth Bobcats football jersey along with the other sports memorabilia they have on display. There will be a “MPD Jersey Dedication Palooza.” The Decoteau family is thrilled that Marc’s best friend and fellow PRHS teammate will be able to attend. He is currently a Marine and has had several combat tours in Afghanistan. Also, a couple of Marc’s fellow soldiers from his unit are going to try and make it, too. The Decoteaus hope the community will come join the celebration and remembrance of Marc Paul.

The Waterville Valley Recreation Department will be closed on Monday & Tuesday, December 24 & 25, in observance of Christmas. We will re-open on Wednesday, December 26, for a full-week of expanded, vacation programming.

Evening programs include BINGO, Ice Cream Social, 3-on-3 Basketball Tourney, Climbing Competition & more!

Daily 'Open Climb Times', December 26 - 30, 2012

By popular demand, we've added daily climbing hours to our Vacation Week programs. Join us daily, from 2:30 pm - 5 pm & try to 'top out' & ring the cowbell on our indoor wall. Please remember, those interested in climbing should arrive no later than 4 pm and must have sneakers (barefoot climbing & winter boots are prohibited). Resort guests: Please present your 'Resort Activity Pass' for complimentary admission. For our annual pass-holders, join us this week to brush-up your technique before Sunday evenings' '2nd Annual Climbing Competition' ~ annual pass-holders receive complimentary admission to the competition.

Two age-appropriate New Year's Eve programs

We'll be hosting 2 celebrations on New Year's Eve ~ for ages 4-6 & ages 7 - 13. Both programs require pre-registration. Join us in the Valley during the weekend of December 15, for Waterville Valley Resort's 'Cookies & Snow ~ A Taste of the Holidays' annual celebration. The Recreation Department will offer a Candy Cottage Workshop*, open to the public, on Saturday morning, plus a 'Holiday Skate Party' in coordination with the WV Ice Arena; join us for FREE skating & complimentary skate rentals on Saturday, from 1 pm - 2 pm. Stick around afterwards & visit with Santa during story time at Dreams & Visions Gifts in Town Square.

The WVRD welcomes Special Olympics New Hampshire (SONH) coaches and volunteers to the 2012 Volunteer Leadership Weekend. On Thursday, November 29, SONH volunteers join us for an evening of partying & programs. On Saturday, December 1, volunteers will be at the Rec for training sessions throughout the day. PLEASE NOTE: Regularly-scheduled Saturday programming is altered on Saturday, December 1st, so we may accommodate our friends at SONH. Big 'Thumbs Up' for a great season at Corcoran Pond Waterfront

Columbus Day Weekend also marked the season finale of Recreation Department programming at the Corcoran Pond Waterfront. Our rental boat fleet, picnic tables and beach volleyball have been packed-up and relocated off-site to winter storage. Thanks to everyone for an incredible 2012 season ~ we'll catch you again on Memorial Day Weekend for the 2013 season opener!

HAUNTED HALLOWEEN HAPPENINGS

Haunted Halloween Happenings, Friday & Saturday, October 26 & 27, 2012

Join us at the Rec on Friday, October 26 for our annual 'Jack-O-Lantern Carving & Pizza Party', 6 pm - 7:30 pm. Bring your friends & family (& pumpkin, if you'd like) and we'll provide the space, carving tools and snacks for a spooky good time. Please pre-register with us, especially if you will need to purchase a pumpkin from the Recreation Department, as our pumpkin supply is limited.

On Saturday, October 27, join us for our annual 'Trick-or-Treating' event, including a ghoulishly-good 'Mad Science Spooktacular' presentation, followed by costume contest in the gymnasium, then our (un)traditional Schuss bus trick-or-treating. Don't forget to stop by the Rey Center on Saturday evening to see if you have what it takes to brave the haunted gallery.

Join us on Sunday, Columbus Day Weekend, for our annual 1.6k fun run & 5k foot race. This year's beneficiary is 'Communities for Alcohol- & Drug-Free Youth (CADY), Plymouth, NH'. This annual event is a great, healthy way to enjoy the long, holiday weekend & show support for a local, community organization. Visit with George at the Curious George Cottage Family Festival, August 11 and 12, 2012!

Join the Recreation Department Staff on Saturday, August 11, in the Town Square to celebrate the Curious George Cottage Family Festival.

Catch us under the "big tent" in the Square, for childrens games and face painting, from 11 am - 2 pm. There's a bunch of other incredible events packed into Saturday & Sunday, as part of the festival (wristbands required; visit http://thereycenter.org/Curious_George_Festival.html for more info).

Please note: Due to staffing the Festival Games, the our regularly scheduled Saturday programming has been canceled. We will return to the Recreation Department for Open Basketball from 4:30 - 6 pm & will still be offering our Kid's Night Out program from 7 - 9 pm (minimum of 15 participants must be met prior to 5 pm).

First-Ever 'Amazing Race' an Amazing Success!

John & Shannon: First Place Finishers in the 'Mixed' Team Bracket with a total time of 2 hours & 11 minutes.

Libby & Molly: First Place Finishers in the 'Youth' Team Bracket with a total time of 2 hours & 43 minutes.

Colleen & Emmett: First Place Finishers in the 'Adult' Team Bracket with a total time of 2 hours & 6 minutes.

On Saturday, July 28, 11 teams of two competed in our first-ever 'Amazing Race' program.

Participants started the self-guided competition on Packard Field, receiving their first clue after completing the first challenge of the day: balancing a dozen nails on the head of a single, thirteenth nail.

Those who completed the first challenge in under 10 minutes were underway, with a time-advantage out the the starting gate. Those teams who failed to complete challenge 1 were given their first clues at the end of the 10 minute challenge time.

Teams travelled the Valley far-and-wide; from the ticket booth at the Ski Area and summit of Snow Mountain, to popular destinations, like Osceola Library, WV Golf Club, Corcoran Pond Boat Rentals and more (for a total of 13 waypoints), deciphering clues and completing challenges of skill and wit.

The top 3 teams across 3 age brackets (photos above) took home a pair of $50 Gift Cards from 1829 Outfitters (in Town Square), courtesy of the Recreation Department & all participants took home 'The North Face' water bottles, courtesy of 1829 Outfitters.

We would like to extend a special thank you to all of our winners and participants, a few of whom made it back to the Recreation Department having finished the course, but not before getting caught in the rain showers of early evening; those hardy souls not only finished, but returned totally drenched from rain (and sweat)!

Thanks for a great new event ~ we look forward to making this an annual summer program!

NEW PROGRAM: WV's Amazing Race ~ Saturday, July 28

Join us for our 1st-ever 'Amazing Race' ~ Come Prepared ~ Grab a Gear List Here

Teams of 2 meet us at Packard Field on Saturday, July 28, 1 pm, to compete in our new 'Amazing Race' program. Competition will begin on Packard Field immediately following the 1 pm registration. Please come prepared to travel the Valley by foot & bike (no personal vehicles allowed; bring your bike or rent one from the Adventure Center in Town Square).

Teams will travel the Valley, racing the clock and each other, stopping at waypoints to decipher clues and attempt mini-challenges (to win time deductions). The fastest team from each of 3 age brackets will win great Valley prizes.

PLEASE BE SURE TO DOWNLOAD THE GEAR LIST. Digital camera (or cell phone) is required to participate, as it will provide photo documentation of having reached each waypoint in the challenge. Please bring your bike or rent one from the Adventure Center in Town Square. Be sure to dress to be outside for the afternoon; please bring plenty of water & sunscreen ~ this will be an active adventure!

Ugotta Regatta, Waterville Goes Country & Kid's Night Out Laser Tag

Canoe & Kayak Races + 'Boat Oughtta Float' Homemade Boat Comp on Saturday, July 21

Join our waterfront staff on Saturday, July 21 for our annual 'Ugotta Regatta'. We'll be having fun, racing canoes & kayaks around Corcoran Pond, then we'll see who has what it takes to paddle a home-made boat to victory & win the coveted 'Gullivson Cup'. We'll also have a great sand castle competition on Corcoran Pond Beach ~ create & share your sand-masterpiece with us! Registration begins at 11 am in Town Square, near the dock. Waterville Goes Country, following the Ugotta Regatta on Saturday

Stick around after the regatta, because Town Square will be jammin' on Saturday, July 21, from 6:30 - 9:30 pm, with one of the regions top country bands - the Jimmy Lehoux Band, plus kids games & activities, bbq, Sugar-Coated Shakespeare and more! Oh, did we mention, the CONCERT IS FREE!

Kid's Night Out Exclusive: Laser Tag Night

On Saturday evening, July 21, Kid's Night Out presents our first-ever Laser Tag night, courtesy of Infinite Laser Tag. Infinite Laser Tag is a mobile laser tag provider based out of Vermont. It's sure to be a blast, running around the gym in teams, trying to come out on top!
