Quaint & Rustic in Italy

I am preparing for a ten day's art class in Umbria, Italy this fall. (More on that when we return). Here is another place - Albergo Diffuso in Sextantio S. Stefano, I've been contemplating for another art course in Italy. It's VERY rustic, and reading the visitors comments on TripAdvisor, many of the beautiful rooms have very small windows and are poorly lit, so they may very well be too dark to work in, should the weather be bad. What do you think? Would you stay in a quaint Italian village & hotel like this?

Rustic bathroom ideas

I'm preparing for next week's re-designing of the front door area of my house. At present it's very small and un-welcoming, but all that will change. More on that later. Another project of mine is my bathroom. Not a very pretty sight either. Functional, but… Searching the web for inspiration, here are a selection of what I found:

Now - there are restrooms and there are restrooms! This one is in the Danish restaurant Höst, in Copenhagen. It sure looks like the wabi sabi style is getting trendier by the day!

Award winning japanese designer Katsumi Machimura started off as a jewelry designer in the 1960s, and didn't dig his hands into clay until years later. His stunning ceramic work has both elegance and roughness - proper gems in themselves! Katsumi Machimura also love gardening, and share his passion for nature in his garden blog. Dreaming of lazy summer days

February in Sweden. Outside it's snowing, inside I cuddle up next to the fireplace, waiting for spring to arrive. In coming years, I hope to spend more time in places like this - a Spanish Mediterranean country house with a pool and daylight studio in Mallorca. To be hones, I think it's beyond my reach, but a girl can dream, can't she? Mmmmm. Where is YOUR paradise?

As if time stood still

I just love the relaxed atmosphere in these images from Hill End in Australia. Once a large settlement, Hill End has shrunk to a small village - but the pull it exerts on artists brings new life to its historic homes. Visiting artists find Hill End unique and paintable. These images are from Haefliger's Cottage built in the 1860s. Read more about this village here.

Hill End has recently seen a second renaissance via a popular artists-in-residence program, where artist can stay for a month in two of the cottages.

DIY: Ice Lantern Tutorial

Do you have winter where you are?

Why not try this welcoming lantern?

All you need is two (different size) containers/buckets

and some decorations like branches, leaves, spices, slices of fruit etc.

1. Put the smaller bucket inside the big one.

2. Place something heavy in the small bucket to keep it down.

3. Add water up to the brim in the space between the two buckets.

4. Place your decorations in the water,

using some of it to fix the small bucket in the center of the big one.

5. Place the buckets outside to freeze.

6. If you've greased the outside of the small bucket and the inside of the big one,

it is easier to remove the two buckets from your new ice lantern.

7. Place a candle inside and you're in business.

Adding deep blue color to a monochrome space

This may not be wabi sabi, in the strictest sense, but as an artist, and lover of color, I enjoy seeing what a touch of color can do to an otherwise monochrome or all natural interior. Here - a deep, blue shade. Ink blue, almost black. Rather beautiful, don't you think?

DIY: 4 creative ways to decorate your Easter Eggs

Easter is here, and if you'd like to try some new decorations around the house, shop or office, here are some egg-ideas worth trying. Even when I don't have time for much else, I always like to try out new ways of decorating my Easter eggs. Here are a few I want to test this year.

First out are these drilled and waxed beauties, which I found here:

OK, maybe drilling and waxing is a wee bit too complicated for me...

I think I'll decorate my eggs using somewhat simpler techniques.

Like Dip Dye, which I found here and here (bottom set):

... using natural dye from berries, herbs, onions and veggies:

Isn't this great? Decorating eggs by attaching leaves before dipping them in dye. I found these images and useful step-by-step instructions here.

And finally - the simplest way: just boil the eggs in all shades of naturally dyed water. I found these pictures here (top left) and here and here (bottom). Good luck!
