Once again we made it to Thanksgiving week! Many people say that Thanksgiving is their favorite holiday of the whole year……But I think it will be a little (or a lot) different for most of us this year…..because of COVID.

I remember some wonderful childhood Thanksgivings. We would have an informal church service in the morning, usually a time of testimonials of “Thanksgiving”, plus a short message from a guest speaker. Then when we arrived home and walked in the front door, we were greeted with the aroma of the turkey roasting in the oven!

Over the next few hours as the other foods were prepared, it would make the “smells of Thanksgiving“ complete! As other relatives and guests arrived, the dining room table filled up and the younger kids had a great time just behind at the kitchen table.

There were a few times when an early snowfall provided a wonderful afternoon of outdoor fun! We would ride toboggans and sleds down the big hill—just across the road from our house. It was a big, steep hill, so once we had some ”paths” made, you could really “get-up” some speed going down that hill! (But the long walk back up got a little slower each time!)

One Thanksgiving evening a missionary couple stopped by to visit my parents and have some pie and coffee. (Every time I see pumpkin pie I remember this story) Everyone except the missionaries, my parents and myself had left the table (I remained because I liked pie, coffee and stories!) This missionary was named George, and when his piece of pie was placed in front of him, he reached for the salt shaker and sprinkled salt all over his pumpkin pie! (I just stared in amazement and thought…what a way to ruin a piece of pie!) I could tell my father noticed it as well and he said: “George, what are you going to do when the Dr tells you to stop eating salt?” George thought for a moment and replied: “I‘ll quit eating pumpkin pie.”

Those are just a few of my memories from 50 years ago or more….. There might be a few families where things have remained close to the same, but eventually they do change.

And this year it seems like most people are dealing with at least some sort of “change”. Either with a much smaller gathering or putting it off completely for now.

At this time of year-especially, we usually hear: “in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18 …..In everything…..really? I guess it would be yes-but, because we certainly don’t have to be thankful for the broken, sinful world that caused the situation we are dealing with—especially if it’s a permanent empty chair for the first time this year.

It might take some work and it’s a little different for everyone, but God does comfort and heal the broken-hearted. Even when my own Faith was weak and I felt like I was broken….He promised and proved He would never leave me or forsake me. I’m thankful!

”Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning.” Psalm 30:5b (NLT)

I have a lot to be thankful for….. We all do…..

Till Next Time…..

Deer season opened a couple of weeks ago in this part of the country. I know several people who get very excited for every phase – Bow, Gun and Black Powder – and they hunt in all three if possible!

I have nothing against deer hunting, in fact I feel it’s necessary to help control the incredible crop damage the deer cause to the farm fields and the damage done to vehicles (and lives) on roads.

I have harvested a few deer in the past, but I only did it because I love venison, however I’ve heard some hunters say that even if they don’t get a shot at a deer they just enjoy being out in the woods. BUT….. There is one part of Hunting Deer, especially bow hunting I do enjoy, and I’ve helped others with it a number of times. It is following the “blood trail” after a deer was shot and ran off. If it was a good shot, they usually won’t go more than 100 yards. But once in a while, even with a good shot they might go 200 yards or more through brush and briars. They really are an amazing animal!

When it’s decided that it’s time to start tracking, the hunter usually marks the spot where the deer was shot and the blood trail begins. No two blood trails are ever alike—and I guess that’s why I like that part of the ‘hunt’. (Plus knowing there’s a “prize” at the end of the trail is exciting!)

You have to watch for every sign of blood—whether it’s a decent sized patch or just a drop. I’ve seen just a drop here and there for maybe 50 ft when suddenly there’s a large pool of blood and it leaves you wondering how?

But sometimes you can lose the blood trail and one of the ways to find it again is to make semi-circle “sweeps” to try and find blood again. If that blood trail just can’t be found, you may need to Go Back, to the spot where the deer was hit and start over….. I’ve seen it work before!

Our Christian walk is much different because we are walking by faith not by sight (2Cor. 5:7) Yet there are times we can become so busy or distracted by things that are not bad—and may even be good things—like caring for family or serving in church or other ministries, that we can get “off track” on our Faith Walk. Let me give you an example of that from my own Faith Walk…..

Seven years ago I was the 24 hour caregiver for my first wife, Laura, who was in Home Hospice. There were nurses who could come at any time if I called, but most of the time, I was her “nurse” day and night. When she passed away after six months of that Home Hospice, I have to admit….. I was broken….. I was broken by grief partly because I was physically and emotionally exhausted, but I had also ventured off my Faith Walk caring for my family 24 hours a day! Plus, I knew very little about grief or how to deal with it.

A couple of months after her passing when a very severe “grief attack” (as I called them) started hitting me, it was getting so severe that I really didn’t know if I would even survive it!

So I slowly headed out through the woods and made my way to a beautiful spot overlooking the river. At first the waves of grief continued to crash into me. But as I looked at the peaceful river, the green hayfield and the beautiful forest, I somehow thought of the story in the Bible of Elijah when he was alone at Brook Cherith and God promised to care for him. Then a line from an old country gospel song came to mind: “Sometimes I get so weary inside, then I recall how my Jesus died.”

I looked at the green hayfield and Psalm 23 was in my head. Somehow….. I started thinking and meditating about how and when Christ died on that cross, that He died for SO MUCH MORE than just “our sin”….. he died for the grief I was feeling, every broken feeling any person has to deal with and this entire broken world we live in!

I had to go back to the cross to get a whole new outlook on how personal, yet broad and contemporary the shed blood of Christ was and is.

Our Faith Walk…..It’s not by sight, but it’s so much more exciting (because we keep learning as we go!)

Till Next Time…..

One of my childhood memories is the family dinner table.

My father tried to have the family seated together at the supper table—even though that meant our meal was close to 7 PM because of my father’s store closing at 6 most nights, (Monday and Friday it closed at 9!)

But we always had the same seating arrangement, everyone knew their seat. Mine was next to my father’s left hand…..and that’s where today’s story will start, but first, the events that made that particular day so memorable.

One of my most important life lessons from my father came when I was 7 years old and in second grade….. It was time for “Art Class” where I was sitting with two other boys and three girls cutting paper for something.

I have no memory of what we were supposed to be cutting, other than it was quite boring, so I had a brilliant (actually dumb) idea! To liven things up and get a laugh or two…. I took my scissors, reached up and took two big snips out of my hair! It worked! Everyone at my table started laughing and having a great time! Eventually it was time to clean things up and get ready to go home.

As we were cleaning up, one the girls from my table said, “that sure was funny, but I bet you’re gonna be in trouble when you get home because it looks really bad.” (I think that’s the day I also learned that girls mature faster than boys) That had never crossed my mind! I stepped into the bathroom to look in the mirror and I could see WHY they all had laughed! I had a real situation on my hands now—because my father was the one who cuts my hair and he knows exactly what it looks like.

Fortunately I had a ball cap to wear on the bus ride home so I didn’t get any teasing from anyone on the bus. I probably got some sibling teasing, but that’s normal, but the really strange thing was—I don’t remember my mother saying a single thing about it!

Suppertime came and we all took our seats around the table, my father glanced at my hair but didn’t comment….. Usually my father would read a Bible story or a devotional before praying for the meal. That night he read a story about Ananias and Sapphira from Acts 5:1-11. This was a true story about a couple who sold a piece of property and gave all the money to the church —or so they claimed. In reality they kept some of the money but still said they gave it all to the church……. Then my father cleared his throat and said: “they lied, and God struck them both dead as soon as they were confronted with it.” Then he read a verse, Proverbs 12:19 NASB “Truthful lips will be established forever, But a lying tongue is only for a moment.” Then he prayed and asked God to help all of us to always be honest and truthful in all we say and do.

I was thinking, maybe he won’t say anything until after supper, after all he looked right at me and didn’t say…suddenly, my father turned to me and sternly said: “what happened to your hair?” I froze. I just sat there thinking: tell the truth, tell the truth, tell the truth….

He broke the silence with a stern “well?” I said “What hair?” He said “The hair on your head!” I then said, ahh, ahh, umm, Wayne cut it. He said, “You just sat there and let Wayne come at you with scissors and cut your hair? (I nodded my head up and down without looking up) “And your teacher just sat there and let him do that to you, what if he poked your eye out or something? Well I’m going to call her right now and find out what’s wrong with her!”

He stood up, went over to the phone on the wall just a few feet away. I remember my heart started pounding hard and fast as my breathing became rapid. What was I going to do? He spun that rotary dial on the phone and the rapid click click click click click sound as the rotary returned home with each spin, was like machine gun fire-at me!

After about the fourth spin of that dial, I blurted out “ I DID IT, I LIED.” He hung up the phone, turned to me and said, “come on, the rest of you eat your supper.” I followed him up to my room, we went in, he shut the door and we sat on the edge of my bed. He put his arm around me and said “I was hoping you would say you cut it, and I would have just said it’s a dumb thing to do and don’t do it again. You see, I knew you cut your hair before you even got home from school because your teacher called and told me what you did. Why do you think I picked out that Bible story about lying and the verse about lying and telling the truth? I wanted to give you an extra reminder to just TELL THE TRUTH!”

He explained that if people find out you lied about something, then they won’t believe you about anything. What he started telling me next really surprised me, and even now over 55 years later it’s hard to tell-because his love is still so powerful. He said “I do have to spank you for lying. But this will be the last time that I will ever spank you for lying to me. (I was thinking, huh?)

I’ve tried everything I can think of to teach you how important it is to tell the truth. I thought maybe since you were working in the store a little now, you might have learned how important honesty is. I’ve told you what Gods Word says and everything I know to try, so if you lie to me again, it will prove that I have failed you as your father and I will have to ask you to spank me.”

I instantly burst into tears and hugged him because I couldn’t stand what I had done to cause him to say that. I guess it was about that time that I received my spanking-although that’s not the part that remains a memory……. We both wiped our eyes and Dad said “let’s go get some supper and after that I’ll trim your hair back up again!”

Then he paused and put both hands on my shoulders and he said: “You came in this room a boy, but I think you’re going out a man. And you know what men do when they reach an agreement? They shake hands, so let’s shake hands like men.” That was the last time he ever had to spank me! What a lesson! What a father! What a man!

Till Next Time…..

It’s fun sometimes to see the videos of three year olds that raided mom’s make-up and have it “painted” all over their face! When asked if they got into mom’s make-up, many times they say “noooooo”! So often they just go for the “big lie”, even though they are covered with the evidence! I guess they haven’t learned “creative lying” yet-(but it’s still a lie, and it’s still wrong.)

It doesn’t take long until a child, when confronted as to whether or not they did something wrong will start their response with “Yeah, But”….. and different versions of that continue throughout life.

I saw a news program just a few weeks ago about a man who was charged with stealing thousands of dollars from the business where he worked. When the police on the show questioned him about the stolen money, he said “Yeah, But I had planned to pay it all back before I got caught”!

There are legitimate reasons why sometimes “Yeah, But” might get used, that involve things such as: time, sickness, weather, travel problems and other things that are out of our control. In most cases though, “Yeah, But”….. followed by an explanation, is usually a version of someone trying to explain away or cover-up something they did wrong (or don’t want to do…..)

Where did this all begin? The first man…..

Genesis 3:11b. (God said) “Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” 12. The man said, “The woman you put here with me-she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.” In modern English he said to God: “Yeah, But….. it was that woman you put here with me, she gave me some fruit and I ate it!”

Today, if we have trusted and believed in Jesus as our Savior from sin, God will speak to us and show us things from His Word-The Bible.

Matthew 5:37 “All you need to say is simply ‘yes’ or ‘no’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.”
Let’s guard our thoughts and pray that we will always be willing to give a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ response, whether asked a question by man or feeling led by the Holy Spirit. That way we will never be labeled a “Yeah, But Christian” by anyone!

Till Next Time…..

A very popular TV show of the 1960’s and still doing well in reruns to this day is The Andy Griffith Show.

Many agree that the antics of Deputy Barney Fife are what made the show such a success. He had such unique mannerisms and expressions, that for simply the humor and entertainment factor I have to agree-because it’s still hard to watch him and not laugh!

But I think the real hidden power of the show, the thing that continues to make people feel good, is the main character…..Sheriff Andy Taylor. He is constantly making Barney “look better” at his job as Deputy, and he does just about the same thing for everyone in the whole town of Mayberry. His constant “calm in control”demeanor just seems to keep everything and everyone running smoothly.

So what was his secret? I have no idea if the writers put traits into the part he was playing or if a lot of it was natural, but Andy was demonstrating a man with a satisfied mind. In fact, in one episode “The Class Reunion” he reveals his satisfied mind.

The setting was, his old high school girlfriend comes to the reunion, she’s been “climbing the business ladder”in Chicago. They get to talking and wondering why nothing ever “worked out” with them as a couple. Then she starts talking about how she has to get back to Chicago and business, and she challenges Andy to try something different “to live up to his potential”. Andy says, “I’ve found what I want”, she says, “how do you know? You never tried anything else.” Andy said, “I don’t have to, and even if I did, I’d find out I already found it.”

That’s a statement from a man with a satisfied mind, which is another way of saying he has found contentment.

In the 1950’s Red Hayes and Jack Rhodes wrote a song called “A Satisfied Mind”. Red said everything in the song are things he had heard his mother say over the years. He got the title from his father-in-law because one day he asked Red who the richest man in the world was, and Red started naming some possibilities. His father-in-law said “you’re wrong, it is the man with a satisfied mind.” The song has a lot of meaning and is still being recorded by people today!
(To see and hear a good current version look up “Wade Spencer Satisfied Mind”)

In Philippians 4:11 The Apostle Paul said, “for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances”. God used different types of suffering in Paul’s life to help him learn to be content in ALL of his circumstances.

Hmmm…..As I really reflect on Philippians 4:11 and what Paul was trying to tell us, how are we doing in the “contentment department” as this Coronavirus shutdown continues? Are we using this time to try and learn how to be content WHATEVER the circumstances? Or…..are we starting to grumble and complain and say things like “I can’t live this way, I just want to go here or there and do this or that!” ….. for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances….. I suppose it is the word “whatever” that just doesn’t give me a pass on these last several weeks.

So….. as I reflect on this verse about contentment, I can say that even though I have really missed the time with family and friends, I am still richly blessed, I have so much to be thankful for….. and I have a satisfied mind.

I hope and pray that you do also, because If you have contentment, you have everything.

Till Next Time…..

This past weekend was the annual return to Daylight Savings Time. As usual, I heard some who were talking about how they were “going to be messed up for days because of losing that hour of sleep”.

Some here in northern Indiana always talk about wishing we could go back to never moving our clocks “like we used to” (when we stayed on Eastern Standard year round!) Personally, I like the extra hour of daylight at the end of the day and I would be okay with leaving the clocks there all year! But…..I’ve never thought of it as saving any time.

Not too long ago while driving, as I approached the intersection of a busy four lane road in our town, the cross traffic stopped and my signal turned green. I proceeded right, and very soon the six vehicles that had stopped for the light were now right behind me. I was going a mile or two over the speed limit, but within a quarter mile all six vehicles passed me! My first thought was: “they must be saving time”. Then in just another half mile, I caught up with all those vehicles…..as they were waiting at a red light.

Perhaps some of the experiences I had in the time and place where I had the privilege of growing up, helped me to focus on using time not saving time….. For instance, I learned to use time to have fun and relax in ways that are lost today.

On those long summer days after the store closed, I’d sit on the porch of the store, sometimes alone but usually with two or three others from our little town. We would talk, laugh, share stories and watch the muscle cars of the day go by…..waiting for someone in a finely tuned “big-block” to pull up to the stop sign. We would instantly yell out “Light em up!” or “Let’s hear it!” Most would oblige us with a mighty roar of their engine and a decent burn-out as they took off, and occasionally if one was a good driver, they would treat us to a perfect “360” right there in front of us! Today, businesses looking to protect their properties can rely on a trusted Fire Watch Company in Miami to help maintain safety and peace of mind.

Another example of using time that created a wonderful memory-yet some might consider a waste of time, was some of the older men who would come in that general store and tell their stories. If D.R. and Louie ever met at the same time in the store, it was incredible! Those two put together could talk for four to five hours with stories that usually began with “years ago…..” or maybe something like “I remember back in 08”…. (now of course that was 1908 they were talking about!) That’s all it would take, and the stories would flow for hours! (If you listened carefully there was also a lot of history mixed in the stories they were telling!)

Now that is so foreign to the way people live and work today that some may think those men were wasting time NOT using time. I still disagree. Those men were using their minds, reliving exciting events from their lives and passing on some history that was soon to be gone forever! I enjoyed hearing it…. they enjoyed telling it. The time was enjoyably used, not wasted.

There have been many popular songs over the years about time and turning back time or saving time and other matters of time. But the song I like the most about time is almost word for word, the first 8 verses of Ecclesiastes 3. It was a #1 hit for The Byrds in 1965, the song: “Turn! Turn! Turn!” The meaning is “a time for everything”.

I know I can’t save time….. But! I do want to continue to use time to learn, have fun, relax, enjoy creation and to worship and honor the One who created time for us to use…..God.

Till Next Time…..

Shortly after I had turned 16 years old, I tested for and received my drivers license. Then almost immediately, my father had plans for me to drive his truck to Syracuse (NY) at times—not just to give him a break (he loved being in the city and dealing with all the vendors)—but mostly because he had been waiting to have an operation and there was no one else to do the driving or buying for him. Now….. even though I was very excited about the challenge and responsibility….. I was also scared!

I was just a 16 year old country boy, driving a truck into a big city. (there were no GPS or cell phones in those days!) plus, I’d be dealing with “seasoned businessmen”, who were my father’s age or older! But you know what happened?

When I made those trips, I learned so much more than I ever could have imagined. I don’t know if it was the friendly respect those vendors had for my father, or they just wanted to help out “the kid”! But almost all of them were nicer than I’d ever seen them and they gave me incredible tidbits of business knowledge, that would be beneficial to me when I started my own company!

But one thing that my father always stressed to me was how to load that truck! Sometimes we would be driving back with a lot of weight on the truck, and it was critical that the weight was distributed correctly. He also warned me about how differently the truck will handle with a heavy load on board….. I still remember him saying to me in regards to a heavy load: “If you think you’re going slow, go slower. It’s better to get there 15 minutes late…..than never.”

Years later, I had my own manufacturing business and parts were machined according to the “cycle time” or how many seconds it took to make the part. You can try to run any part as fast as you want, BUT the maximum speed will always be controlled by certain things like: type and size of material, tooling, limits of the machine etc.

Well, one time we had a young employee with good intentions who “set a job up” in a machine that normally ran good at a 12 second cycle time. He decided that he would speed it up and reduce the cycle time to 8 seconds! There was soon a fair amount of smoke coming from the tooling area of that machine, so I asked him about it.

He was real proud that he found a way, to increase productivity by so much! (the only problem was, he hadn’t found anything , except he was about to experience more problems and down-time) I told him: “You’ll get more parts if you slow it down.” He looked at me like I was from another planet! He said: “No, I cut 4 seconds off the cycle time, we’re going to get more parts than ever! About 15 minutes later he came to me and said the machine was down and he was setting it up again at 12 seconds because all the tooling had burned up at 8 seconds…..

Each of us in our own personal lives, find times where we just need to slow things down a little. The way you like to relax is probably different from mine. But I can relax by just being outside and observing nature, the seasons, wildlife etc. God has put a beautiful world out there for us to care for, but also to enjoy!

Then Jesus said, “let’s go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile.” He said this because there were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his apostles didn’t even have time to eat. Mark 6:31 NLT

Till Next Time…..

I saw part of a late night infomercial promoting a product that was supposed to cure most any common disease, and just might allow you to live to be 120 years old! Then a vibrant, physically fit young woman started telling how she’s been taking this product and giving it to her two children. She was so excited talking about all the extra years they will have together….. because of this wonderful product…….

I think most of us eventually find out that, no matter who you are….. life on this earth is uncertain and short.

In 1991, just two years before his unexpected death at age 59, Conway Twitty recorded a song written by: Bobby Fischer, Johnny MacRae and Richard Ross, called: “Life’s Too Short (No Matter How Long It Lasts)”.

Keep in mind what we’re taught from the book of James, chapter 4, verse 14 (NASB) “Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.” And also: Psalm 90:12 (NLT) “Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom.”

It’s always a good thing to take care of our physical bodies so we enjoy as much good health as possible. And we should also enjoy our times with family and friends….. but….. Life Is Short, it really is….. Then what?
Hebrews 9:27 “And it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgement;”

Something to think about about…..

Till Next Time…..

Something happens on the last week of February every year right here in northern Indiana. I’ve kept track of it for over thirty years and it’s never missed. What is the event? It’s the return of the Red-Winged Blackbird!….. Okay, so maybe you’re not a huge fan of spring, or love to explore the woods and nature like I do and you might be thinking big deal!
Every year, this particular species of bird returns to the nesting ground to begin it’s’year’. When I heard that first lone male ‘calling out’, I just couldn’t help but smile and say “welcome back”! The males will get here first and establish their own nesting territory before the females arrive a few weeks later.

The Red-Winged Blackbirds are extremely territorial! You can already hear them ‘calling out’ to one another-and the call repeats every few hundred yards from bird-to-bird, on down the banks of the stream or marsh, until you can’t hear them anymore….. I used to think they were talking to each other like: hi, how ya doin? But, it’s actually more like: THIS IS MY TURF AND YOU BETTER KEEP OUT! If you get too close to one of their active nests–you just might have an up close and personal encounter with one of these birds!
But aside from being a true harbinger of spring, I’m always amazed at how even this one, small part of nature, is a simple and consistent reminder to me of God.

“Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are?” Matthew 6:26 NLT

It seems like the more I enjoy and learn about creation, I realize all of nature points to The God who created everything. The structure, the order and repeatability of everything–from the change in seasons, to the return of the birds in the spring!
If we are looking, we can see constant reminders everywhere that God is in control!

Till Next Time…..

Hopefully, you’ve had some memorable Life Lessons along this journey that have helped you make some good choices in life! Sometimes these Lessons can come suddenly when we see-or hear of someone who did not make a good choice, and a little voice inside us says: “note to self: don’t ever do that!”

One of my first positive Life lesson tidbits that stayed with me, came when I was 7 years old on a trip to Syracuse NY with my father while he was buying merchandise for his store. We were at the Wholesaler where he bought clothes, shoes etc. and my father always called his order in ahead of time, so we just went in to pick it up and pay the owner.

Even though my father’s name was Arnold, this older man we were paying called him “Arnie”. Since I was his son, he instantly called me “”Little Arnie”! Then here’s the Life Lesson which I found to be true during the 39 years of being in business for myself…… He looked at me and said “Little Arnie, if you’re ever in business for yourself, don’t just focus on sales. It seems like everyone puts all their attention on sales. Always pay attention to the buying. If you buy it right-you can sell it right. The money is made in the buying.” Not much I could do with that at 7 years old other than store it away….. I did, and I proved his advice to be true!

My favorite part of all the elementary school years was fifth grade, because of my teacher, Mrs Muise. She taught us so much and she made learning so much fun! It was the common everyday, practical things she taught (in addition to the reading, writing, spelling, math, history etc)! She taught us things like how to read your gas meter, electric meter, how to balance a check book, wait on a customer and make change. She taught us a lot about nature, such as the migration habits of birds that were native to the area, and which are the first to return in the Spring-(not the Robins!)

A few times she took us on a short nature walk and identified species of trees by their bark and leaves. She even showed us “how to girdle a tree” so that it would die standing up-to be cut down later, the way some in Tree Management did. But one of the important Life Lessons I learned from her was: “When you talk with someone, look them in the eye, it shows them you are listening and it shows respect.”

In high school, my English teacher, Mr Estus was constantly using Life Lessons anytime he could…..and that is what made his classes so interesting! For example, I remember one day at the beginning of class he said “before we start today, take out a sheet of paper for a quiz about yesterday’s class.” Immediately a girl raised her hand and said: “I don’t have to take the quiz because I wasn’t here yesterday.” He replied “That’s right, you were not here. But, if you don’t take the quiz you will get a zero.” She exploded up out of her seat and yelled: “THAT’S NOT FAIR!”

He just calmly said: “First of all, I don’t yell and you don’t yell, okay? Second of all, the quiz is on the homework assignment that was given 3 days ago when you were here, so it actually IS fair for you to take the quiz. And finally, what I want you all to learn and remember is that when you leave these walls and are in your own working profession-whatever that may be….. there WILL BE things happen to you that might not seem fair. But you know what? That’s life, and it happens to everyone! So it will be up to you to figure out how to make the best out of every situation, or you might spend a lot of your life feeling defeated.”

Mr. Estus also made it possible for me to work full time in my father’s store during my senior year-while I also did an extensive independent project, with him as my advisor on both! He required me to keep a daily journal of all activities I did at the store each day, then turn that information in as a report to him weekly.

He had it set-up so that he could grade me in several different areas, although I never knew exactly what he was looking for. That other project he had me working on was a photo and history story of our little town, from origin to current. Of course there was no internet, and I soon found out that most official original Town records had been destroyed by fire. So, I went to a few different elderly individuals who had many pictures, personal information and private history books.

The school had a darkroom I could use to reproduce pictures, I was not allowed to use copies of any kind and wouldn’t dream of using original ones anyway! But it took a long time….. because I had to earn the trust of the people I was visiting to get the information and go through their pictures…… While I was scrambling working in the store, meeting with the people in the evening, working in the darkroom when I was finally allowed to borrow pictures and studying the history books, I rarely talked with my teacher, except when I turned in my weekly report -I WAS TOO BUSY! I never even noticed that he was quietly watching me from a distance…..

At the end of the school year, Mr. Estus told me that the Photo/History Book project and the Work Study Program both had taught me more about life and business than the school ever could have! But, I suppose like many people, it took me years to realize the numerous Life Lessons I’d learned from my parents, teachers and working with my father from a young age. All of those lessons combined have helped me avoid some bad choices and make better choices.

Recorded in God’s Word are many of the Life Lessons that Christ was constantly teaching. Some of His teachings are just good, simple practices for anyone to follow, and in some cases have been used by people who may not have even known Christ was the Author! One example is “The Golden Rule” “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the law and the Prophets.” Matthew 7:12 (NIV)

Even though we could say that Christ gave some really good Life Lessons for anyone to follow, He also spoke with authority concerning our eternal lives….. “Jesus said to him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through Me” John 14:6 (NASB)

So, I hope you have been able to learn from some Life Lessons on your journey. And that your eternal journey is settled because you have accepted Christ as your Savior!

Till Next Time…..

[thrive_leads id=’1930′]
