What do your pets have planned for the holidays? Do you have someone to watch them for you? Or are you willing to take the chance that your home will look like this when YOU return from vacation? Have you considered finding a pet sitter to watch over your pillows?

Pet-sitting services are a great alternative to boarding for dogs and cats. Here is a short list of questions to ask yourself when you are making such an important decision.

Do your pets have problems with large groups of animals? Though many dogs seem to like the social aspects of a boarding kennel, shy, aggressive or nervous dogs may be stressed by groups. Cats and birds can be intimidated by other animals as well.

Has your pet experienced separation anxiety when away from his own home and family? While many pets, especially dogs, enjoy new experiences, some feel much more secure at home. Keeping their habits the same can be good for their mental and physical health.

Do your pets have all the vaccinations required for boarding? For the protection of all dogs in a kennel, a bordetella (kennel cough) inoculation is required twice a year and other vaccines must be given annually. Owners of dogs and cats that have had bad reactions to vaccinations in the past may prefer not to vaccinate often and therefore cannot board.

Is your pet older or does he/she require specific care due to health problems? Older pets are often happiest when their routines and surroundings are constant. Pets who require special health care will likely get a much better service from a pet sitter.

Do have multiple pets? It can get very expensive to board more than one pet and you can get a much cheaper and personal service with a pet sitter.

Do you prefer knowing that your pets are at home in familiar surroundings? With a pet sitter you don’t have to worry about getting your pets to a boarding facility, how they might react to the facility and arranging pickup when you come home. With a pet sitter, your loving pet will be waiting for you when you walk through the door!

They’re not just in your pet’s fur–they’re everywhere. With the warming temperatures, they might be jumping earlier than usual. Fleas may be ready to dive into your animal, but there’s a way to stop the scratch before it starts.

“It’s always skin irritation. Being sensitive to the flea bite,” Billy Martindale said, DVM, Animal Hospital of Denison.

Man’s best friend may have something to sweat about this summer.

“When you have animals, you’re going to have fleas unless you control them,” Martindale said.

As the mercury rises earlier than usual this year, veterinarians advise pet owners to use flea prevention early.

“Fleas feed on animals. That’s the only place they feed. That’s the dinner plate. They can be off the animal for a long period of time, actually for years,” Martindale said.

According to veterinarian Billy Martindale, fleas thrive when it’s 80 degrees with 80 percent humidity. However, cold weather doesn’t stop dormant bugs from looking for a bite to eat.

“Doesn’t mean the fleas aren’t going to be inside the house, doesn’t mean they’re not going to be on the animal, because they will be,” Martindale said.

Fleas aren’t just outside. They could be in the carpet. Martindalae recommends spraying your home for pests regularly, not just once a year.

“You got to be able to control the pet and do something inside the house, or even outside the house,” Martindale said.

During summer hikes in the woods, ticks are another pest to be wary of because of the diseases they may carry.

“Fleas do not pose a human health problem. Ticks pose a humongous human health problem,” Martindale said.

Flea prevention can come from a pill or topical treatment.

“Some animals are predisposed to being sensitive to fleas,” Martindale said.

It might keep Fido from scratching later.

The Environmental Protection Agency advises pet owners to vacuuming frequently to remove eggs, larvae and fleas. It’s also important to clean carpets and cushioned furniture.

Harley’s Impressive Career

There is no easy way to share this news – yet I know so many of our Waggers Family has been concerned and checking in on the status of Harley. Sadly Harley has lost his battle with issues related to cancer, below is the memo that was shared with the Sherriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s Office Personnel,

It is with great sadness I inform you of the passing of Jimmy Smith’s retired canine “Harley”. Canine Harley was an outstanding narcotics detection canine with a zeal for work like no other.

Harley’s impressive career speaks volumes of his ability and the hard work and dedication put forth by Deputy Smith. Deputy Smith knew for some time this day would come and like any handler regretted choosing the day.

As fate would have it, Harley decided to go out with a bang. The following is a brief outline of the day’s events and the moments leading up to Canine “Harley’s” departure.

On 3-5-2013 at approximately 1000 hours Deputies Wall, Greene, Smith, Horton, Wilbourne, Williams and Sgt. Johnson were at Kildaire Animal Medical Center on Kildaire Farm Rd near Cary Parkway. While talking in the parking lot Deputies observed a black GMC Acadia wreck into a brick wall then strike a power pole causing the power pole to be split in half.

Deputies immediately began organizing efforts for a vehicle extraction and perimeter containment for traffic control and safety. It was immediately apparent that the subject was deceased and no pulse was able to be obtained. The male was extracted from the vehicle, pulled to safety and CPR was started.

Through a collaborative group effort, traffic was re-routed, a safety perimeter was established, Fire and EMS were routed into the scene and CPR was continued until EMS personnel arrived and took over CPR. Upon EMS arrival the subject still had no pulse and EMS began lifesaving measures and his airway was secured. The subject was put on an AED and received one shock. CPR was continued and the subject was able to be brought back to life. EMS transported the subject alive with stable blood pressure and breathing on his own. Scene operations were turned over to Cary Police Department and Progress Energy staff.

Divine intervention placed Deputies at the right place at the right time. Deputy Smith conducted a follow up on the subject and nursing staff advised he would be fine.

With the passing of Harley, another life was saved and it will be a day to remember.

New Apex Dog Park, Now Open!!

Hunter Street Dog Park, 1250 Ambergate Station
Hours of Operation: 7 am – 10 pm (year-round)

Membership Fees

The park is a fenced area that remains locked at all times. To access the park, you must register your dog(s) annually and receive 1 key card that unlocks the gate. Additional key card available for $10. Complete Dog Park Registration & Rules form.

Types of Membership Resident Non-Resident

Single Dog $30 $60
Multi Dog $50 $100

Registration Basics

Annual registration fee is required.
Registration available at Apex Community Center, 53 Hunter Street (see hours of operation).
Proof of Rabies vaccination /expiration date and assigned rabies tag number from the veterinarian is required at registration.

Dog Park Basics:

A key card is required to enter the park.
Dogs must have collar with ID, and display rabies vaccination tags at all times.
Each adult may have a maximum of 2 dogs at a time in the park.
Children 10 and under are not allowed inside the fenced area.
Dogs under 6 months of age are prohibited.
Additional rules listed on registration form.

What’s the scoop on Poop? Dog waste bags and trash cans are available throughout the park.

Will my pass work at both dog parks after the Nature Park is completed?
Yes

Will the park be periodically sprayed for fleas?
No, each pet owner is responsible for their own dog’s treatment.

What happens when a pass expires?
Passholders will be notified either by mail or e-mail approximately one month before their pass expires. They will have that time to come in and renew their pass. Those who don’t renew by their expiration date will have their cards deactivated the first business day after the pass expires.

Which section should my dog use?
The Town does not have a set limit for what size a dog should be to use either the small or large dog section of the park. However, as a general guideline small dogs are considered to weigh less than 22 lbs or be shorter than 16 inches and large dogs weigh greater than 25 lbs and measure 27 inches or greater at the shoulder. If your small dog is comfortable with large dogs or if you medium size dog is timid and not active then choose which feels best. But always be considerate of others and their pets when choosing which part of the park the use.

Does the Town offer day passes?
At this time day passes are not offered.

How is resident versus non-resident status determined when issuing passes?
For the purpose of issuing passes, just like program registration, residency is determined by where the applicant actually resides and whether or not that location is within the Town’s corporate limits as defined by the Apex Planning Department. It is possible that someone can have an Apex address but not reside within the corporate limits.

What is the estimated acreage of the large small dog areas?
The small dog area is approximately ½ acre and the large dog area is approximately 1 ½ acres.

Is it acceptable to leave my pet in the park and leave the fenced area?
Pass holders are expected to be on site with their dog whenever their dog is using the park. Leaving your dog unattended at the park will result in immediate revocation of your pass.

Why don’t I get two cards with a multi-dog pass?
Each application (which allows no more than 2 dogs to be registered) comes with one pass. You may purchase an additional pass for $10.00.

What happens if I lose my card or it’s stolen?
Lost or stolen cards should be reported immediately to the Parks and Recreation Department at 919.249.3402. The lost or stolen card will be deactivated immediately so it cannot be used by an unregistered dog owner. If a card is lost or stolen, there is a $10.00 replacement fee which covers the cost of the replacement card.

Why does the TOA charge for use of the Dog Park?
The Town charges a fee for use of the dog park to help recoup operating costs. The fees are used to offset the cost of things such as personnel, dog bags, re-mulching, and routine maintenance.

What should I do in the event of a dog bite?
Notify the Apex Police Department immediately at 919.362.8661 and the Apex Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources Department at 919.249.3402 as soon as possible.

What should I do if I see problems with other park users and their dogs or witness other problems / acts that are not permitted at the park?
Depending on the severity of the issue, notify the Apex Police Department and/or Apex Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources. The Town’s goal is to make the dog park experience as pleasurable as possible for all users.

New Year’s Resolutions for Pets

10 Tips for enhancing animals’ lives and our own

Have you ever reported a case of animal neglect or cruelty?

I am not typically one for making New Year’s resolutions — too much stress and expectation! But I do enjoy the feeling of a “fresh start” and the refocusing that the new year brings. Here are some ideas and tips to hopefully enhance the health and add some fun to your pets’ lives.

It is the start of a new year, and people’s thoughts often turn to diet and exercise, making up for holiday indulgences. Pets also suffer from overeating and lack of exercise, as discussed in the Is My Pet Overweight? articles. (Please click here for tips on how to tell if your pet is overweight. But there are more things to consider than diet and exercise when it comes to being a good example for our pets. Here, in no particular order, are 10 tips to a healthier lifestyle for our pets and animals in need.

1) Exercise
Regular exercise has the obvious health benefits, but it also is a great time to bond with our pets. A simple daily walk helps a dog learn proper manners, provides some good quality time, and does wonders for the human counterpart, too! Keeping pets at the proper body weight reduces the risk of heart and joint problems, diabetes, and a host of other poor health conditions.

2) Health Check Up
A regular visit to your veterinarian is the best way to stay ahead of potential problems. Annual examinations of teeth, heart/lungs, and body condition overall will be less costly than waiting for a problem to develop and your pet suffering needlessly from complications of preventable problems. Having a good “baseline” of information about your pet also gives the veterinarian something to compare against and determine exactly what is wrong when something isn’t quite right with your pet.

3) Good Nutrition
Like humans, pets who eat poor quality food just don’t have the health reserves than those that a good balanced diet. Poor skin, hair coat, muscle tone, and obesity problems can be a result of a poor diet. Also, pets are not humans — a diet rich in table scraps is not a healthy one, and can lead to problems such as obesity and pancreatitis.

4) Good Grooming
No one wants to be around a stinky pet. Regular grooming — bathing, toe nail clips, brushing teeth and hair coat, parasite control — not only make the pet more pleasing to be around, it is much healthier for the pet! For skin and coat problems that don’t resolve with regular grooming, please see your veterinarian — there may be an underlying medical condition affecting the skin, coat, or toenails.

5) Safety
Keeping pets safe is something most pet owners take for granted. However, take a moment to assess the toxic chemicals used in your house and yard. Are they necessary? Are all safety precautions followed? Where are household chemicals stored? Can your pet access these items? If toxins such as rodent poisons are used, can your pet access the rodents? Think too about enclosures for pets — is the fencing secure? Can your pet get caught or hooked up on the fence, a tree, etc. and choke or be stuck out in the weather when you are away?

6) Information
Being informed is the best way to keep track of our pet’s health and well being. If possible, keep a medical log of your pet’s vet visits, medications, special needs, etc. to help keep track of your pet’s medical history. Knowing what is normal and not normal for your particular pet will assist your vet figure out what is wrong in the case of illness.

The Internet is a wealth of information, but caution is advised when seeking out a diagnosis or medical assistance via the web. Just as in real life, there is good information and bad information out there. The only way to get an answer/diagnosis is through a thorough physical examination, review of medical history, and possible lab work performed by your veterinarian.

7) Love and Attention
This is probably obvious, but too many pets are left outside in all kinds of weather, with very little human contact. Same goes for inside pets — those who are largely ignored for lack of time and busy human schedules. Take the time to focus on your pets and create/nourish that human-animal bond!

8) Volunteer
There are thousands upon thousands of animals in need of help each day. This concept can be overwhelming for many people. Every little bit helps, though. Financial donations, donations of supplies or your time to a local shelter or rescue group is always appreciated, and real live animals are being helped by your generosity.

9) Maintenance
This refers to the more “unpleasant” aspects of pet care — the litter box scooping, yard clean up, cage cleaning, and fish tank maintenance. A clean environment for our pets is a healthy one! Poor sanitation can lead to behavior problems (i.e. litter box avoidance) and health problems such as skin infections and the spread of communicable diseases.

10) Be a Voice
Speak up when you notice neglected or abused pets in your neighborhood. This isn’t pleasant, but if you can help even one animal escape a painful life, it is worth it. Shelters and rescue groups will thank you and most will accept an anonymous tip to help animals in need.

New Year’s Eve is the one party that the whole world is invited to, and it’s just days away! As we get ready to ring in 2012 with a loud, colorful display of festive fireworks, we need to remember to keep our furry friends safe. The excitement of the sparkling, popping and cracking sounds might be fun for humans, but it can make many pets agitated and scared. Without proper care, pets can get lost during the festivities. Here are a few helpful tips to keep your furry friend safe this New Year’s Eve:

Make sure your pet is wearing a collar with identification tags with current information. Cats should wear break away / safety collars. Microchipping your pet is always advised.
Keep your pets indoors in a quiet area that is familiar to him / her with plenty of fresh water and give dogs several safe chew toys. Dogs who are crate trained may feel safest in their kennels. Cats will do best in a bathroom or utility room with food, water and their litter box.
Resist the urge to soothe and comfort your agitated pet as this can actually reinforce his / her stressed behavior. Instead, stay calm and “matter of fact” when dealing with a pet who is upset by loud noises.
Frightened outdoor dogs have been known to jump high fences and dig holes to escape the sound of fireworks. Indoor animals should be kept away from large glass windows or doors because when scared they are capable of crashing right through.
Make sure to keep all alcohol, festive foods / chocolates, floral arrangements and party decorations away from your pets. Alcohol can be dangerous and deadly while balloons, streamers, party hats and confetti can become lodged in your pet’s intestines, causing an intestinal blockage. Chocolate is especially toxic to both canines and felines.

Remember to keep a watchful eye on your pet and put the name and number of your veterinarian and local animal emergency clinic in a designated area.

‘Twas the Night Before Christmas (dog version)

It was about time for Christmas, and all through the house
A creature was stirring, but it wasn’t a mouse
I knew right away it was my wife’s little pup,
She thought we were sleeping, and so she was up

The dog was a gift it was coercion, really,
A woman can pout, ’til a man gets downright silly.
And now the wife was snoozing she was really sacked out
She wouldn’t have awoke from less than a shout.

Yes, her in her nightgown, I in my BVDs,
We had finally settled down to catch some Zs
When off in the kitchen there arose such a clatter,
I rolled from the bed to see what was the matter.

Away down the hall, my head in a muddle,
I reached the kitchen…and stepped in a puddle.
The glow from a nightlight illuminated the room,
So how come I stumbled over the broom?

I fell in a sprawl, my legs were not stable.
On the way down, my nose hit the table.
My head was a spinnin’ and when I came to rest
Four miniature dog feet stood on my chest.

With a lick and a bark, she bounded away,
Into the living room, she ran to play.
More rapid than mouses, that rat terrier ran,
Me on the follow, rolled newspaper in hand.

“Stop, Skeeter! Stop, Dog! Stop, Pup!
Halt, Pooch! Halt, Girl! Oh, come’ere, you mutt!
“Get off the new couch! Now let go of that curtain!
Ohhh…If I ever catch you, you’re gonna’ be hurtin'”

As winds of a Texas tornado do fly,
She spun round the room, down low and up high.
Then up on the countertop, that puppy went
She stopped for a second. I thought she was spent.

I make a quick lunge, she ducked me and then
Yawned when I dove through the flour bin.
As I drew out my head and was turning around,
She made for the presents, in a single bound.

I was covered with flour, from my head to my toes,
My robe in tatters, and blood on my nose.
A bag full of toys, she grabbed with glee
I nabbed her, I thought, but instead got the tree.

The ornaments, they broke, as they began to fall
The lights, how they fizzled, and that is not all.
When I reached for the plug, to turn the bulbs out,
What flowed through my body, but electricity, so stout!

As smoke encircled my head like a wreath,
That dog held my big toe, tight in her teeth.
“Skeeter,” I moaned, “I give up. Oh, Skeet, I give in.”
So she bit my swollen nose, and nipped at my chin.

She spoke not a word, but went back to work,
Down came the stockings it took just a jerk.
Then up from the hall, came the sound of feet,
Momma, it seemed was awake from her sleep.

“Now you’ll get it pup,” I announced with glee.
Then Skeeter walked over and put her little head on my knee.
She looked up at my wife – so innocent – and at me, so, so sad.
And it didn’t take long, to know I’d been had.

Then came the wife’s voice, so strong and so clear,
“Bill, you leave that puppy alone! You hear!”
And I exclaimed to myself, as they walked out with a strut,
“Don’t leave any gifts, Santa just PICK UP THE MUTT!”
