During the school and work week at the Nagasawa house, our day begins at 4:15 a.m. I sleep with my iPhone next to our bed. Although it is charging, I have my phone alarm set to wake us up at that God-forsaken time. We get up that early as my wife has to ready our 14-year-old daughter in time to catch her private school bus.

In the 14 years that I’ve written this column, I’ve always had a story at Christmastime about my wife and our Christmas tree-buying experience. I never thought I would see the day, but this year my wife and our 14-year-old daughter went out without me and actually purchased a tree they deemed to be perfect without the annual drama.

I really wanted to get into the holiday spirit for Christmas this year. Besides acts of charity, nothing does that more for me than to put up decorations on our house. In a way, this represents to the world my shout out of “Merry Christmas!” and my December contribution to the coffers of HECO.

You may find this hard to believe, but in my 53 years of life, I have never carved a Thanksgiving turkey. It’s not that I never wanted to, it’s just that it was always done by someone other than me. I suppose from the first year that I was born until he passed in 1983, my dad would carve the turkey every Thanksgiving.

Now that our 14-year-old daughter is a high school teenager, I am doing my best to have a good relationship with her. I heard all the horror stories from experienced parents about teenaged daughters. If they’re right, I have little time before she will have nothing to do with me.

My wife is great about spending money on clothes. She always dresses sharp and chic, but does it without breaking the bank. She will buy things in anticipation of future use simply because she can buy it on sale for a greatly reduced price.
