Caleb Hanie walked into a tough situation last week when the Bears played the Oakland Raiders. He had to fill Jay Cutler’s shoes, which would be no easy task for anybody. He walked into Soldier Field having never started an NFL game and it showed.

During the first quarter Hanie was clearly anxious and too pumped up. He threw several bad passes which led to easy interceptions. As the game went on he calmed down (his first half QB rating was 44 while his second half was 97) and threw fewer lollipops but still made a few bad choices. Specifically, the shuffle pass to Forte, which led to a 5 yard loss and Forte getting hit pretty hard, should have been thrown away. But even with all those bad decisions and first start jitters from Hanie, the Bears only lost by 5 points. And Hanie threw for over 250 yards and ran for 50 yards of his own. That’s a decent first start if you ask me.

Looking forward to this weekend against the Chiefs Hanie will have another chance to show us what he’s capable of. If he makes better reads of his receivers, keeps his eyes on defenders, and throws fewer interceptions the Bears should have no problem winning. I realize that’s a big task for a QB starting his second game in the NFL, but this is Chicago, the city of big shoulders, and we expect nothing less!

In all seriousness, I think Hanie will have better ball control this weekend. He’s had another week to prepare with the receivers, take tips from Cutler, and build an understanding with the offensive line. I realize two weeks isn’t much, but it’s twice as much as he had last week.

How do you think Hanie will perform against the Chiefs?

Last weekend I was in Charleston, South Carolina for a little rest and relaxation. The biggest dilemma of the trip was finding a bar where we could watch the Bears/Lions game. I reached out to my followers on Twitter (you should follow me!) but nobody got back to me. Apparently I don’t have any South Carolina followers yet. Anyways, we ended up at Mac’s Place on East Bay Street. This place is a Bears fans home away from home. There is a Chicago Bears rug at the door. There are Bears flags and pendants hanging from the walls and ceiling. There are autographed pictures of former players lining the hallway. And best of all, the bar was filled with Bears fans (and one guy in a Lions cap – he was a good sport)!

Chicago Bears fans at Mac's Place, Charleston, SC

If you’re ever in Charleston and need a place to watch the Bears game, hit up Mac’s Place, you won’t regret it.

Matt Forte is the workhorse of the Chicago Bears. He does everything they ask him to do. He runs, he catches, he blocks. In return he seeks a multi-year contract but it’s pretty clear the Bears have no interest in that scenario. I’ve thought for a while that the Bears plan to franchise Forte next year but until now I didn’t have proof.

First let’s explore why the Bears (probably) won’t give Forte a multi-year contract. It can actually be summed up in one word: risk. Running backs take a pounding in the NFL. Their average career lasts less than three years. Forte is now in his fourth full season so a multi-year contract would wrap him up through his seventh or eighth. To assume he will be productive (numbers similar to the top 5 RB’s) and stay healthy during that time frame just isn’t realistic and that’s the position Bears management has chosen to take. This led them to offer Forte a contract with less guaranteed money than he feels he’s worth.

The Bears currently have about $18 million in salary cap room. They have 16 players coming out of contract at the end of this season and 13 coming out at the end of next season. When asked “Does the team plan to work on contracts for other players?” Jerry Angelo responded, “We do. It’s part of the plan for the money.” In the past the Bears’ front office has worked proactively to extend players a year out from their contracts end. But Forte didn’t get this treatment. He’s within two months of the end of his contract and negotiations are still being labeled ‘a matter to be discussed during the off season’.

That’s all the proof I need to see that Forte will be hit with the franchise tag next year. The Bears made their offer, Forte didn’t like it, so next year he’ll be franchised. It’s great news for fans because he’ll be a Chicago Bear and will help them win games. But it’s too bad Jerry Angelo and other members of upper management couldn’t put a decent offer together for him. I’d say he has earned it.

The Bears have one of the most dedicated fan bases in the NFL. Each year they have a season ticket holder renewal rate that is ridiculously high (and also hard to pin down). Soldier Field is also the smallest stadium in the NFL. On top of that, players and employees of the organization get tickets to each game to disperse as they please. What I’m trying to say is you’re actually pretty lucky to find tickets to a Bears game at Soldier Field. And if you are lucky enough to attend a game then you probably paid a pretty penny to do so. But have no fear, I know how to get tickets at face value and I’m about to let you in on the secret!

I have to let you know now, this isn’t for everyone. You have to know the right people in the right places. You also have to be willing to get rejected because some people would never consider doing this.

For starters the people you know need to be Bears fans and not just your average fans. They need to be dedicated to the team in order to assist you on your quest for face value Bears tickets.

Next you have to sit next to them, a lot. Location is key here; the closer the better. And you have to sit with them when it’s hot, windy, raining, snowing, sleeting, and especially when it is dreadfully cold. Sitting in the cold is a bonding experience and sitting so close nearly guarantees that bond after spending enough time together. They won’t help you if you aren’t dedicated to sitting near them.

Finally, after spending so much time together and forming a bond that can only be formed by spending hours in the cold together you can propose the idea of trading Bears tickets. It’s really that simple!

There’s only one catch. The people you want to trade with MUST be Bears season ticket holders, and so do you! This way you can trade your seats to a game for their seats to another game. If they have two seats and so do you, after your trade you can head to a game with a bigger crew, and when it comes to football, the more the merrier!

Now all you need to do is get on the Bears season ticket waiting list with me, wait for 20+ years, become friends with your fellow season ticket holders, and then trade tickets!

So what are you waiting for? Get on the Bears Season Ticket Priority List now!
