Adieu The New Sikh

After 2 years of running The New Sikh website, I have to shut it down because of financial constraints.

It was a good journey with so many people commenting and sharing my content posted on the website. The website's social presence was great with more than a 1000 people liking it on Facebook. I tried advertising and donation options to help keep the website running but couldn't manage to earn anything. The same story goes for another website I created. Maybe I'll buy a new domain and continue with a site on Sikhism in future, for now I have moved the content of the website to a new blog- All About Sikhism. This is the best part about Blogger, it's Free! Looking forward to continue my blogger journey on all-about-sikhism.blogspot.com.

Waheguru Ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji ki Fateh

It's been a long time since I posted here. I was planning on shifting my Sikhism related writing to a separate website and have finally done it. Please check out The New Sikh, the website continuing my journey from where I left it on Wake Up Khalsa. I hope you like it.

About the website

For this new website, I have adopted a little different approach from what I did on Wake Up Khalsa. Instead of just posting about history or articles that have a formal ring to them, I am going to post personal opinions on current matters and lean towards positive side of things.

Note: The website may undergo a lot of changes in upcoming days and may go down at times, please accept my apologies for the same.

Shades of Shaheedi Jor Mela - Fatehgarh Sahib 2012

Sikhism is another name for battle against bad, evil and exploitation. While moving on this path countless Sikhs have sacrificed their lives. Guru Gobind Singh ji ,the tenth Guru had sacrificed their whole family including himself for keeping the seed of the Sikhism alive. His two younger sons Zorawar Singh and Fateh Singh were bricked alive at Sirhind in 1704.

Fatehgarh Sahib

That place is now called as Fatehgarh Sahib which is also considered as the world’s most costliest land not only because of the style of its buying by Deewan Todar Mall from Wazir Khan for cremation of Mata Gujri ji and Sahibzadas but the fact that elders are considered as most experienced persons and young ones are the future and Sikh community had sacrificed both on this land.

Three-day annual 'Shaheedi Jor Mela', which is held in the memory of the martyrdom of Guru Gobind Singh's two younger sons, concluded peacefully at Gurudwara Jyoti Saroop Sahib, leaving large number of memories and different shades behind. Members of the Sikh community from different parts of the country and abroad participated in the religious event. The number was near about ten lakhs. This large number had shown the devotion of people regarding their faith and martyrs.

Thanda Burj, Fatehgarh Sahib

Different Sikh institutions distributed their literature. The work of Sikh missionary college during these three days was very appreciable. Their pamphlets were brief and interesting, more over they emphasized on removing the superstitious thoughts and exploitation which complies with the guidelines provided in Guru Granth Sahib ji. Continuous hymn singing had created a wonderful spiritual environment. Many preachers motivated people to follow the path shown by the Gurus.

Another shade that had covered the gathering at bigger level was the political aspect. Political parties established their stages to take the benefit of such a big gathering. Many members from different political parties were present in the event. All the members of the political parties were trying to show their party as the most appropriate for the welfare of Punjab. It shows that these people had no link to the young martyrs and were concerned only about their vote bank.

Some major traditions were also seen on the negative side which includes the tradition of Langar. Langar is the tradition of free kitchen started by the Sikh Gurus to feed the needy and to condemn the tradition of casteism as people of all castes are served Langar collectively. During this three day gathering, people from different villages organised Langar with the banners which had names of their villages written on them. The most annoying thing was that some people serving Langar were acting as street hawkers by loudly announcing their food items with the feeling of showing superiority to others.

Another shade which was creating the shivering in this cold weather was the lack of discipline among the devotees. Many were seen just enjoying the whole event; they were not showing any concern regarding the sacrifice done by the younger sons of tenth Guru. Some were pushing others for their cheap fun and even the use of slang's and vulgar language could be heard commonly. These things lead to destruction of the spiritual atmosphere of the Shaheedi Jor Mela.

If we consider these aspects then we can easily say that we are ignoring the sacrifice of our martyrs and wasting our time and money. Whenever we take part in these type of gatherings we should come with complete seriousness in our soul and behavior. We should value the hard time our martyrs had faced and that they have sacrificed themselves for their faith and coming generations. If we participate with complete dedication then it is definite that we will have high spirits and strength to tackle all the problems in our lives. Remembering the sacrifice of the young sons of Guru Gobind Singh, we should work hard in taking our society into a new glory. Although with the negative aspects, the overall Mela closed peacefully and many showed their true love towards Sikhism. I end this article remembering the house of Sikhism built with the base of lives of Sahibzada Fateh Singh and Sahibzada Zorawar Singh.

Sikhism and Bollywood

Have you ever seen a Bollywood movie that has a Sikh character? Probably, Yes. But, Have you ever seen a Bollywood movie that has a Sikh character who really is a Sikh? Now that's impossible. No matter a Bollywood movie has a Sikh character as the main actor, a side actor or in a very small role, Bollywood never presents it correctly. Every movie that comes out with actors playing Sikh characters, will have Sikh sentiment hurting scenes. Why is it that every movie shows the wrong picture of the Sikhs?

Sikhs in Bollywood movies

Are there no real Sikhs in Mumbai who can teach them or is their no information available on internet? Every new movie containing Sikh characters falls into the category of 'Hurting Sikh Sentiments'. This leads to lot of controversies and protests against the movie by the Sikhs. Maybe that's all Bollywood wants! They intentionally make these movies that presents the wrong picture of the Sikhs and lead the movie into lot of controversies. The Golden rule for the success of Indian movies is controversy. By hurting Sikh sentiments they make people talk and share about the movie, which means free publicity. So, probably it's done just for publicity. Whatever the reason, Bollywood is doing it again and again. The most recent example is the movie 'Son of Sardaar'. A movie that got into controversies because of the joker type presentation of the Sikh character in the movie and other factors like the Hindu God Shiva's tattoo on Ajay Devgan's chest. Also there is a wedding scene that shows a Sikh wedding done in a Hindu religion style, which is very similar to what was shown in the movie 'Singh is King few years back. Bollywood is one of the biggest reasons for the mixture of Sikh and Hindu religions in India. All the stupidities like fasting, using a powder in hair after marriage and various other Hindu articles have entered into the Sikh families because of these movies. And it's not just about Bollywood, all the Punjabi movies coming out fall into the same category too. They are just mixing up Sikhism and Hinduism. Even the Sikhs in the movies and in real life are following all the non-Sikh traditions and don't even know what they are doing. At my level, all i can do is never see Bollywood movies even the ones not about Sikhs. Something at a major level needs to be done to stop all this. Bollywood and Punjabi actors and directors need to learn a lesson so they won't even think about making a movie that hurts Sikh sentiments. Let's take a first step by not going to theaters to watch 'Son of Sardaar' and stopping all Sikhs from doing so. Share the word, it's time to Wake Up !

Gurgaddi Diwas - 2nd Guru, Shri Guru Angad Dev Ji

Today is the Gurgaddi Diwas of 2nd Guru of the Sikhs, Shri Guru Angad Dev Ji. Guru Angad Dev Ji were born as Lehna on 31st March, 1504. Gurudwara Matte di Serai now stands at the birthplace of Shri Guru Angad Dev Ji. Parents of Guru Sahib Ji were Bhai Pheru Mall and Mata Sabhrai. Guru Nanak Dev Ji gave the Gurgaddi to Bhai Lehna (later Guru Angad Dev Ji) on 18th September 1539.

Some of the major contributions by Guru Angad Dev Ji are :-

Invention, teaching and expansion of Gurmukhi
Enlargement of Langar (free kitchen for all)
Believe in Equality for all
Doing Selfless Service
63 Shabads of Gurubani in Guru Granth Sahib Ji

Sikhs and Olympics

Sikhs have been a part of the Olympic games since the 1928 Olympics held in Amsterdam.
Most of the participants as the Sikhs since the 1928 Olympics were the hockey players. Sikh boys and girls have been a part of Olympics games in other events too. This blog post covers the flying Sikh Milkha Singh, the torch bearer Fauja Singh and the Sikh hockey players who brought glory to the Sikhs and the nation.

Sikh Hockey Players in the Olympics

Sikhs became the part of the Olympics since 1928 Amsterdam games with participation in Hockey. More than 130 Sikh players have been part of the hockey teams since the 1928 Olympic games. These hockey teams include teams of India, Canada, USA, Singapore, Scotland, Malawi, England, Uganda, Tanzania, Malaysia, Great Britain, Hong Kong and Kenya. Since the 1928 Amsterdam games, Sikhs have been a part of 9 Gold medal winning teams. Sikh hockey players have been a part of every Indian Hockey team from 1928 till 2012 London Olympic games. The Olympic games to feature the most number of Sikh hockey players were the 1972 Olympic games at Munich. A total of 249 goals have been scored by the Sikh hockey players in Olympic hockey. 30 Sikh hockey players played from 4 different countries namely India, Kenya, Malaysia and Uganda. Sikhs have played at every position in hockey at Olympics.

Sikh hockey players hold a number of Olympic games records. Ajit Singh holds 2 records for a single goal in 1976 Olympic games. Ajit Singh holds the record for the first person to score a goal at an artificial pitch in Olympic hockey. Ajit Singh holds another record for the same goal as the fastest Olympic goal in hockey done in just 15 seconds after the start of the game. Gurmeet Singh did 5 goals in the record goal scoring game in which India beat America, 24 goals to 1. Balbir Singh Senior was the captain of the Indian hockey team to win 3 consecutive gold medals at the Olympic games. Balbir Singh Sr. was awarded Guiness world record for the individual scoring most number of goals in a final match of Olympics hockey. Balbir Singh Senior did 5 goals in the final match in which India beat Holland 6-1 at 1952 Olympics.

Milkha Singh

'The Flying Sikh' Milkha Singh

Milkha Singh, born on 8th October, 1935 had been a part of 2 Olympic games as an Athlete. Milkha Singh participated in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, where he was not able to do much. After that, Milkha Singh participated in the Commonwealth Games and won gold medal. This was the first Gold medal for India in the Commonwealth Games. Milkha Singh's performance on the Pakistan's tracks, gave him the name 'The Flying Sikh'. In 1960 Olympics hosted by Rome, Milkha Singh came 2nd in all the 200m races before the finals. In the finals of 200m, Milkha Singh broke the world record for 200 metres race in Athletics but unfortunately missed the bronze medal by the 100th fraction of a second. Milkha Singh came at 4th spot in the finals of 1960 Rome Olympics. His son Jeev Milkha Singh is associated with golf and is one of the top golfers of the world.

Fauja Singh - Torch Bearer at Olympics

Fauja Singh, born on 21 July 1911 has made all the Sikhs and Indians around the world proud for his great achievements in Marathon events. Fauja Singh is 101 year old Marathon runner. Recently, Fauja Singh carried the Olympics torch in Newham, England. This is not the first time for the Fauja Singh to become the Olympics torch bearer. Fauja Singh also carried the Olympics torch during the Athens Olympics in 2004.

So far, Sikhs have helped multiple nations achieve gold medal in the Olympics hockey. There had been a lot of other Sikh participants in the Olympics so far. But still a lot more needs to be done by the Sikhs in the world of sports. Born as Sikhs, boys and girls are getting addicted to drugs and spoiling their lives in a lot of other useless acts. We need to take a lot of steps for the growth of Sikh sportsmen in the various games to mark the presence of Sikhs in the Olympics.

Raksha Bandhan in Sikhism

Sikhism and Raksha Bandhan

Coming directly to the answer that whether or not Rakhi or Raksha Bandhan has any connection with Sikhism or not? Answer is No. Sikhs and the Sikh religion has no relation at all with this festival of Rakhri or Raksha Bandhan.

Amazingly every Sikh around seems to be celebrating it without even searching whether or not this thing has any relation to his religion or it should be done or not? There are even pictures made to make people believe in the false things.

The Question, why not celebrate can be explained via many examples. Some of them are listed here. The most important one is that Sikh girls are warriors just like Sikh men. So, they do not need any protection as they are as brave and as capable as their brothers. Another thing to note here is that majority of the people celebrating this thing have no respect for other women except their sisters. For a Sikh, every woman except his wife is his sister. So a Sikh will not just protect his own sister but every woman in this world. There can be numerous more examples like a thread on an arm does nothing to a brother and sister relation.

More festivals that are not a part of Sikhism -

Here's a list of the non-Sikh festivals. They are Sangrand, Masseya, Punneya, Panchmi, Navmi, Dasmi, Dussehra, Diwali, Ram Navmi, Janam Ashtmi, Id, Bakrid, Holi, Lohri, Tiaan, Rakhri, Birthday, Christmas, New Year, Guga Pir and Karwa Chowth. That's a list of festivals not linked to Sikhism.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji in Haridwar

Guru Nanak visited various sites across the world to help people understand the real meaning of life and help them come out of the fake beliefs and superstitions. On Guru Nanak Dev Ji's visit to the Haridwar city situated on the banks of river Ganges, Guru Ji saw people throwing water towards the rising sun.
On asking the Brahmins what they were doing, Brahmins replied that they are giving water to their ancestors. They gave water towards east to the rising sun because their ancestors feel thirst due to sun's heat. After knowing this Guru Nanak Dev Ji started giving water towards the opposite direction, that is west. This suddenly attracted the attention of the Brahmins giving water towards east. Some of the Brahmins started gathering around Guru Nanak and asked why he was doing so? Guru Nanak Dev Ji told them that he was giving water to his crops in Punjab. Brahmins said that how can your water reach around four hundred miles from here? Guru Nanak said that if my water cannot reach my crops than how can it reach to the people that do not even exist in this world? A wave of shock was felt across the crowd and many of them realized that what they were doing is wrong. Most of the Brahmins in the crowd realized that the water they were throwing towards sun was going nowhere but coming back to the river. In this way, Guru Nanak Dev Ji removed the superstitions from the minds of the people of Haridwar.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji saw the superstitions among the people of Haridwar. Guru Nanak helped them realize the truth and most of the Brahmins realised that the water can not reach their ancestors. A Gurudwara named Nanakwara landmarks the place where Guru Nanak Dev Ji stayed during their visit to Haridwar. Guru Nanak Dev Ji helped people during their journey to realize the existence of one formless God. Guru Nanak spread the truth and the word of one universal creator and formless God. Guru Nanak Dev Ji taught people the meaning of life, to remember God, to live as active members of society. Guru Nanak Dev Ji helped in removing social evils like caste distinctions. Guru Nanak Dev Ji made people quit idol worship, belief in forms of God and other fake beliefs.

Nishan Sahib

Nishan Sahib

These points will help us know more about the Nishan Sahib and its importance in Sikhism -

In the words Nishan and Sahib, Nishan means Symbol and Sahib means Lord or master. Sahib is used often in Sikhism to depict respect.

Nishan Sahib is triangular in shape and Saffron in color. The mast is covered with the material from the same cloth.

Nishan Sahib is given by the Sixth Guru, Shri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji and the first Nishan Sahib was hoisted at Akal Takht Sahib in front of Gurudwara Darbar Sahib, Amritsar in 1609.

The symbol in Nishan Sahib is composed of a Khanda, a Chakra around Khanda and two Kirpans of Miri and Piri.

NISHAN SAHIB

Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji wore two Kirpans of Miri and Piri. Miri is the symbol of Rule and Piri is the symbol of Faith. At that time, Faith needed protection and hence Guru Hargobind Ji wore two Kirpans and participated in battles to defend the faith.

Nishan Sahib is a symbol that helps people to know that their is a Gurudwara nearby where they will get food to eat and place to rest and sleep.

Nishan Sahib is also a symbol of victory. Nishan Sahib is hoisted at the place which is conquered by the Sikhs.

There is a Khanda on the top of Nishan Sahib.

The height of Nishan Sahib helps visitors find Gurudwara easily so they can have food from the free kitchen and place to stay. Also, the height of Nishan Sahib teaches the Sikhs to stay in Chardikala all times, i.e. in High spirits.

Bhai Baghel Singh Ji - Conqueror of Delhi

BHAI BAGHEL SINGH JI (1730-1802)

Bhai Baghel Singh Ji were born in 1730 in village Chabal Kalan in district Tarn Taran Sahib. Baghel Singh Ji became the leader of Crore Singhia Misl. Bhai Baghel Singh Ji led the Crore Singhia Misl during the 18th century when the misl had over 12000 fight men.

CONQUERING DELHI

On 11 March 1783, Baghel Singh Ji with their army entered Red Fort and captured Delhi. Baghel Singh Ji located the seven sites associated with the lives of Sikh Gurus so that Gurudwaras can be constructed on these sites.

Bhagat Puran Singh - A True Sikh and an Environmentalist

BHAGAT PURAN SINGH JI

Bhagat Puran Singh Ji were born on 4 June, 1904 in village Rajewal, district Ludhiana. Bhagat Puran Singh Ji's Father's name was Chaudhary Chibu Mal and Mother's name was Mehtab Kaur. Bhagat Puran Singh Ji were a true Sikh and an Environmentalist.

Bhagat Puran Singh

Bhagat Ji were born as Ramji Das but adopted Sikhism due to an incident that happened in their life. One day, Bhagat Ji cleaned a temple completely and worked all day cleaning the stuff like statues at the temple. But at night time, when Bhagat Ji sat down to have food they were given no food to eat. This incident hurt Bhagat Puran Singh very badly. Next day, Bhagat Puran Singh Ji went to Gurudwara Sahib and got food to eat. They were also served with milk and got place to rest and sleep. Puran Singh need not do anything to get food at the Gurudwara Sahib. This incident changed Bhagat Ji's life and made them a Sikh. Due to the circumstances, Bhagat Puran Singh Ji were not able to complete their studies after 10th standard. Bhagat Puran Singh Ji had an emotional attachment with the environment and the disabled people who were not supported by anyone. Bhagat Puran Singh is the only person who devoted all his life for the welfare of the disabled and homeless people.

Bhagat Puran Singh Ji were awarded with the Padamshree award by the Indain Government. But after the Indain army attacked Golden Temple in 1984, Bhagat Ji surrendered the Padamshree award. Bhagat Puran Singh Ji loved the mother earth and kept removing all unwanted materials they found on the roads throughout their life. Bhagat Puran Singh Ji were tensed towards the high rate of cutting of trees. Bhagat Puran Singh Ji spread awareness about saving the environment by using various means like distributing free pamphlets, banners and books. Bhagat Puran Singh Ji wrote articles and books on topics like Cutting of trees, Soil erosion and increasing pollution.

BHAGAT PURAN SINGH AND PYARA SINGH

Bhagat Puran Singh with Pyara Singh

One example of the thought of caring the disabled of Bhagat Ji's is Pyara Singh, whom they found at Gurudwara Dera Sahib and carried on their shoulders throughout their life. Bhagat Puran Singh carried Pyara Singh all the way from Pakistan to India walking 50kms during the partition of India in 1947. Bhagat Puran Singh Ji used to perform their daily routine jobs carrying Pyara Singh on their shoulders. Bhagat Ji thought that their are lot of others like Pyara Singh that are disabled and are unable to do anything on their own. This thinking led to the formation of the Pingarwarha, the home for the homeless. Pingarwarha supported disabled and the orphans that were not supported by anyone. Bhagat Puran Singh Ji dedicated their whole life for the welfare of the disabled people and saving the environment. Bhagat Puran Singh Ji died on 5th August, 1992 afternoon in PGI hospital, Chandigarh. Bhagat Puran Singh Ji will always be remembered for their dedication for the disabled and their love for the environment. Pingalwarha setup by Bhagat Ji at G.T. Road, Amritsar, Punjab, India is still running successfully. Pingalwarha is currently run by Dr. Inderjit Kaur. Free print media of Bhagat Puran Singh is still available from Pingalwarha. Pingalwarha is supporting orphans, disabled, education of children, free medical support and much more. We can donate to the Pingalwarha to help nourish the thoughts of Bhagat Puran Singh Ji.

BHAGAT KABIR JI (1440 - 1518)

Bhagat Kabir Ji were born in 1440 in Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh, India. Bhagat Kabir Ji were a Muslim (as indicated in the bani of Bhagat Ravidas). Bhagat Kabir Ji were a weaver by profession (as indicated in bani of Guru Amardas Ji). Bhagat Kabir Ji's bani is incorporated in Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

BHAGAT KABIR JI

Apart from the influence in Sikhism, followers of Bhagat Kabir have a seperate religion and are called Kabir Panthiye (followers of Kabir). Bhagat Kabir Ji instead of becoming a Sadhu and leaving home in search of God, lived a married life and continued their profession and still found God. Bhagat Kabir Ji's life and bani teaches us the same. Bhagat Kabir Ji were a true saint and a great philosopher. Bhagat Kabir Ji died in 1518 in Maghar, Uttar Pradesh.

Bhagat Kabir's 227 padas in 17 ragas and 237 slokas are incorporated in Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

Shaheedi Purab - Guru Arjun Dev Ji

Today is the Shaheedi Purab of the fifth Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Arjun Dev Ji (ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਰਜੁਨ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ). Points listed below will help us to know more about Shri Guru Arjun Dev Ji -

Shri Guru Arjun Dev Ji were born on 15th April, 1563 A.C.E. in Goindwal, Amritsar.

SHRI GURU ARJUN DEV JI

Shri Guru Arjun Dev Ji were married to Mata Ganga Ji.

Shri Guru Arjun Dev Ji sowed the seed of Martyrdom in Sikh religion and became the first Martyr among the Sikhs.

Shri Guru Arjun Dev Ji completed the construction of Gurudwara Darbar Sahib, Amritsar under the Guidance of fourth Guru, Shri Guru Ram Das Ji.

Shri Guru Arjun Dev Ji wrote the Holy scripture 'Adh Granth' and placed the scripture in Darbar Sahib.

Martyrdom - Guru Arjun Dev Ji

The martyrdom of Shri Guru Arjun Dev Ji was done by Mughal Emperor Jahangir, as Jahangir's ears were filled with poison against Guru Arjun Dev Ji by Diwan Chandu Shah. Chandu did so as his proposal of his daughter's marriage with Hargobind Ji, son of Guru Arjun Dev Ji was rejected by Shri Guru Arjun Dev Ji. For the martydom of Guru Arjun Dev Ji, Jahangir adopted the Yasa law (made by Genghis Khan for giving punishments to the religious people without shedding their blood). Shri Guru Arjun Dev Ji were arrested in May 1606 for execution by Jahangir. Shri Guru Arjun Dev Ji were made to sit on hot cauldron, hot sand was poured on Guru Sahibs body. On the last day of torturing, Guru Arjun Dev Ji's body was thrown away in the Ravi river, so that no marks remain of the Guru of the Sikhs.

The date for the celebration of Gurpurab (25-05-2012) is controversial this year. According to the Nanakshahi calender of Sikhs launched many years back, it gives the date as 16th June 2012. But, the calender was later redesigned which changed the dates of various events. But forgetting the controversy, we need to learn something from the Martyrdom of Shri Guru Arjun Dev Ji and should dedicate our life to Sikhism, no matter how many difficulties we face in our life.

EARLY LIFE

Darshan Singh Rudel Ji were born in France as Michel Rudel. From the early days of childhood, Darshan Singh Ji were spiritual in nature and didn't like to eat non-veg food. They also didn't like the other common things that happen in the French families like drinking Beer or Smoking. A person who does not drinks or eats meat is considered to be unsocial in France. Darshan Singh Ji also had a great interest in painting, for which they travelled many countries later to learn the Art of those countries. Darshan Singh Ji worked in harmony with Mother Earth, which can be seen in their paintings and hence they were interested in organic farming to save the Mother Earth from the harmful pesticides and fertilizers. The customs and traditions that Darshan Singh saw living in France, made them an Atheist, i.e. a non-believer of God by the age of 16. In their early life, Darshan Singh knew nothing about Sikhism. They hardly knew anything about India except that Mahatma Gandhi was born here and Buddhism was founded in India.

VISIT TO INDIA

Darshan Singh Ji came into contact with Sikhism when they visited India. Although, they knew nothing about Sikhism before visiting India. They were almost 19 when they visited India in 1977. Spending nine months in India, Darshan Singh Ji came in contact with Sikhs. Darshan Singh loved to keep unshorn hair as Jesus and other Holy and Spiritual people kept hair and were impressed by the fact that Sikhs too have uncut hair. Darshan Singh Ji's contact with the Gurudwara Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple), Amritsar and Sikhism restored the belief of God in the mind of Darshan Singh Ji. Although, Darshan Singh Ji knew no Punjabi and could hardly speak English but were very impressed by the Personality and Kindness of th Sikhs. Darshan Singh Rudel Ji stayed for some time at the Guru Ramdas guest house near Darbar Sahib, Amritsar. Darshan Singh Rudel were deeply impressed and loved to listen to the Kirtan (hymns) in the Gurudwara Darbar Sahib. Darshan Singh Ji loved the concept of Langar (Free Kitchen) in which everyone will eat without discrimination of caste or creed.

Darshan Singh Rudel Ji left India with a heavy heart but with a promise to return. Darshan Singh Ji took with them the treasure of knowledge about Sikhism. Darshan Singh Ji believed they always knew inside the presence of God, only their ego kept them away from admitting it. After leaving India, Darshan Singh Ji searched for and worked in Greece, Switzerland and France. When Parents of Darshan Singh Ji knew about the Drashan Singh's approach towards Sikhism they were afraid if their son was adopting some wrong faith but later knew that Sikhism was a great religion and helps a Person to stay away from bad habits like intake of intoxicants. Darshan Singh Ji kept their last name same after they were changed from Michel Jean Louis Rudel to Darshan Singh. They returned to India in 1980, when they had long hair. They started wearing turban after 1980. They visited various Gurudwaras across India and returned to Punjab in 1983. Their was a atmosphere of great tension in Punjab at that time. Darshan Singh Ji met Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale, the man who stood up against the Indian Government. Darshan Singh Ji went to Australia and New Zealand and met some Sikhs there and worked on farms. Later on, Darshan Singh Rudel Ji went to England, where he came in contact with Dr. Trilochan Singh who helped Darshan Singh Rudel Ji learn English and Punjabi. Also, Darshan Singh Ji were happy to get an opportunity to do sewa at the Gurudwara Sahibs in England. Darshan Singh Ji joined the Red Cross society to do some work and also because Red Cross Society believes in helping the Humanity without discrimination.

BECOMING AN AMRITDHARI SIKH

Darshan Singh Rudel Ji returned to India again in 1991. Darshan Singh Ji visited various Gurudwaras across India and on 10th July, 1991 got baptized as a Khalsa at Anandpur Sahib, Punjab. Darshan Singh Ji consider it to be their rebirth at Anandpur Sahib. Due to the critical situation of Sikhs in India and Indian Government taking actions against innocent Sikhs, Darshan Singh Ji were caught by Police multiple times for no reason but were released later after knowing the reality of Darshan Singh as a Frenchman turned Sikh. Darshan Singh Ji also returned to France and met their Parents. Their Parents were happy for them. Darshan Singh Ji also told their fellows in France that Sikhism is the real Catholic (Universal) religion. Darshan Singh Ji filed an application for changing the name from Michel Jean Louis Rudel to Darshan Singh Rudel in France, but it was rejected even after lot of efforts were put by Darshan Singh Ji. So, Darshan Singh Ji became a British citizen and renounced French Citizenship.

Darshan Singh Ji is an excellent painter. Darshan Singh Ji have made many great paintings and artwork. Darshan Singh Ji went to Taiwan to learn Chinese style of paintings and Martial Arts. Darshan Singh Rudel Ji also went to Japan to learn Japanese Landscape Gardening. Darshan Singh Ji always loved the Mother Nature. Darshan Singh Ji didn't eat meat and were against the killing of animals since their childhood. As a phrase of Bible stops one from killing the innocent, hence Darshan Singh Ji considered it should apply to the animals too. The paintings made by Darshan Singh Ji are always in harmony with the Nature and the Waheguru. Artwork created by Darshan Singh Ji depicts love for Nature and God. For the respect of Mother Nature, Darshan Singh Ji was always interested in organic farming to save the Mother Earth land from pesticides and fertilizers. MARRIAGE

Darshan Singh Rudel Ji, at the age of 40 got married to Malwinder Kaur in Chandigarh, Punjab. They were married at the Sector 34 Gurudwara, Chandigarh in 1997. Darshan Singh Ji currently live with their wife and a step-daughter.

During the early life, Maskeen Ji lived in Pakistan and Studied at Khalsa Public School. Later Maskeen Ji joined the Govt. Maskeen Ji along with their family moved to India and got settled in Alwar, District Bahadarpur, Rajasthan, India. Maskeen Ji tried to adopt work life and worked as a Railway employee. But Maskeen Ji hardly had interest in other works than joining the company of Saints and discuss with them about religion as Maskeen Ji had a Saintly soul. Maskeen Ji took the responsibility for providing free uniforms and books to the students. Maskeen Ji visited many countries around the world spreading the word of Humanity. Maskeen Ji had regular programs in Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Agra, Faridabad, Kolkata, Bnagalore, Chennai and many more every year. Maskeen Ji were awarded with many awards and titles by Akal Takht, Sikh Sangat and SGPC like 'Gurmat Vidya Martand', 'Bhai Gurdas Award' and 'Panth Ratan'. BHAI BOTA SINGH AND BHAI GARJA SINGH

In 18th century, Mughal Emperors gave orders for complete elimination of the Sikhs. Thousands of Sikhs were killed. Sikhs took shelter in mountains, deserts and forests. But Sikhs were searched everywhere and killed wherever found. With the Mughal Empire and other citizens thinking that Sikhs no longer exist, two Sikhs proved that Khalsa will not die so easily. Bhai Bota Singh and Bhai Garja Singh standing on G.T. Road near Tarn Taran started collecting taxes from everyone passing from the road. They did this so that the news of Sikhs collecting taxes and that they are not extinct reach the Mughal rulers. Bhai Bota Singh sent the letter to the Mughal Governor about the collection of taxes by Sikhs. In 1739 A.D. Mughal force consisting of hundreds of soldiers reached the place of Tax Collection. Mughal Commander ordered Sikhs to surrender themselves but Bhai Bota Singh refused his order and prepared for a battle. Both the Sikhs took a place near the bridge, joined their backs and started fighting and killing the Mughal army. Bullets and arrows were hitting their bodies but they show no sign of pain and kept on killing the enemies. Their legs were broken, they fell on ground, then they were stabbed and cut into pieces by Mughal forces. The great Sikhs attained Martyrdom on the Battlefield. The news of the bravery of Bhai Bota Singh and Bhai Garja Singh spread across Punjab. More Sikhs started formation of troops and fight against Mughals. The tax collection act of Bhai Bota Singh and Bhai Garja Singh states that the Punjab is the land of Khalsa. We need to learn how to devote our life's to Khalsa from these two Khalsa warriors.

Panj Pyaare

VAISAKHI 1699

On the eve of Vaisakhi 1699, Guru Gobind Singh Ji called a large Sikh gathering at Anandpur Sahib. After the morning devotions and kirtan Guru Sahib addressing the Sikh sangat asked for a head. Hush fell over the assembly. Daya Ram, a khattri from Lahore offered his head. Guru Ji took him into a nearby tent and came out with the sword covered with blood. Guru Ji asked for another head, this time Dharam Das, Jatt from Hastinapur came forward. On calling again, Mohkam Chand, a tailor from Dwarka came ahead. Next was the Himmat Rai, a water-bearer from Jagannath Puri. The fifth one to offer his head was Sahib Chand, a barber from Bidar. After this, Guru Sahib brought the five from the tent similarly dressed with neatly tied turbans. Guru Sahib was also dressed similarly. They received Khande Di Pahul from Guru Ji and Guru Ji received Khande Di Pahul from them. They were called Panj Pyare. Before receiving Khande Di Pahul they belonged to lower and upper castes. Now, they formed the nucleus of the self-abnegating, martial and casteless fellowship of the Khalsa. They wore the 5 K's - Kesh (unshorn hair gifted by GOD), Kangha (comb, symbol of tidiness), Karha (the bracelet, Khalsa wears nothing else to eliminate superstitions), Kachera (an undergarment to stay away from characterless acts) and Kirpan (the sword, for self-defense and helping the weak and needy). The last names of Panj Pyare were changed to Singh and they become Daya Singh, Dharam Singh, Mohkam Singh, Himmat Singh and Sahib Singh. Guru Sahib became Gobind Singh from Gobind Rai.

Mata Bhag Kaur Ji

Mai Bhago

Mata Bhag Kaur often referred as Mai Bhago was a descendant of Pero Shah. Mai Bhago was born in Jhabel (now in Amritsar district, Punjab). Mai Bhago was married to Nidhan Singh Varaich of Patti. She found the 40 men (called chali mukte now) and made them felt sorry for the act of leaving Guru Gobind Singh Ji when Anandpur Sahib was under attack. She persuaded them to find Guru Ji and reached a dhab near Khidrana. Guru Gobind Singh Ji reached near Khidrana persuaded by the Mughal forces of Aurangzeb. Mai Bhago led the 40 men (chali mukte) to the fight with Mughal forces they encountered. Guru Ji saw this and helped them with the showers of arrows from a nearby high ground. Mai Bhago and chali mukte fought so bravely and inflicted such a huge damage that Mughal forces were forced to retreat their attack. When Guru Ji reached the battlefield, 39 of the chali mukte were dead. One of them, Mahan Singh was about to die. Guru Ji took him into his lap and teared the agreement that chali mukte had signed saying "we are not Sikhs". Since then they are called chali mukte which means 40 liberated ones. After this battle, Mai Bhago was assigned as the bodygaurd of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. She later settled in Jinwara (Karnataka). She lived to attain a ripe old age. Mai Bhago's life teaches us that in Sikhism, women have equal rights as men and Sikh women fight as bravely as men.

Bhai Kanhaiya Ji

Bhai Kanhaiya Ji (1648-1718) was the founder of sevapanthi sampardyay of Sikhs. Bhai Sahib was born in Dhamman Khatri family of Sodhara near wazirabad in sialkot district ( now in Pakistan ). Bhai Shaib's father was a wealthy trader. Bhai Sahib in young age used to help the poor and helpless. Bhai Sahib then ran their Father's business and also spent a lot of time with Bhai Nanua, a disciple of the last three Sikh Gurus. Bhai Sahib therefore were introduced to Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji and became his Sikh. Bhai Shaib was a designated water carrier for Guru Sahib and for the langar. During the skrimishes between the Sikhs and Mughals, Bhai Sahib used to carry a Mashak serving water to wounded and to those dying of thirst. Sikh soldiers complaint Guru Gobind Singh Ji about this act of Bhai Kanhaiya Ji serving water to the enemies. Bhai Sahib explained that he see no Sikh or Muslim but a human being. Everyone has the same GOD's spirit. Guru Gobind Singh Ji admitted that Bhai Kanhaiya has understood the true meaning of Gurbani. Bhai Kanhaiya's mission was selfless service of Humanity with no distinction of caste, creed or nationality.

Maharaja Ranjit Singh

Maharaja Ranjit Singh was the Emperor of Punjab. He was Grandson of Charat Singh and was born to Mahan Singh and Raj Kaur on Nov. 13, 1780 at Gujranwala. In his youth, he was an excellent Horseman and skilled in all kinds of military activities.
He was first married to Mehtab Kaur. He was a born ruler and established the Sikh Raj. One among his generals was the widely known Hari Singh Nalwa. The Sikh Raj (Sikh Empire) established the present day Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Peshawar and Tibet. The Gold and Marble work at Darbar Sahib ( widely known as Harmandir Sahib or Golden Temple ) was done under the patronage of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Maharaja Ranjit Singh died on June 20, 1839.

4. GURU RAMDAS JI - author of Lavan for Anand Karaj, creator of Township Amritsar and designed Gurudwara Darbar Sahib.

5. GURU ARJUN DEV JI - written the Adi Granth, became first martyr in Sikhs, tortured for several days till death.

6. GURU HAR GOBIND JI - built Akal Takht, the Throne of Almighty, wore two swords of the Miri and the Piri, fought 5 battles with Mughals and won all of them.

7. GURU HAR RAI JI - continued tradition of Sikhs as warriors, built free Ayurvedic medicine centres for helping the Humanity.

8. GURU HAR KRISHAN JI - became Guru at the age of 5, cured numerous sick people of Delhi from the chickenpox epidemic.

9. GURU TEG BAHADUR JI - built city of Anandpur Sahib, saved Kashmiri Pandits from Mughals, martyred by Aurangzeb in Chandni Cowk, Delhi.

10. GURU GOBIND SINGH JI - founded Khalsa and assigned five K's, sacrificed whole family for the religion and nation, declared Guru Granth Sahib Ji as the next and forever Guru.

GURPURABS refer to the events celebrated by the Sikhs like Guru's Birthdays, Martyrdom, and other important events. A Sikh celebrates Gurpurabs and does not celebrates other things like new year, his/her own birthday, etc.
Why a Sikh does not celebrates these may lead to a long discussion. For now, just understand that a Sikh remembers Death not Birth. Gurpurabs are celebrated throughout the year. Sahibzada Ajit Singh

Sahibzada Ajit Singh (1687–1705) was the eldest of Guru Gobind Singh's four sons. His younger brothers were Sahibzada Jujhar Singh, Sahibzada Zorawar Singh and Sahibzada Fateh Singh.
With his three brothers, Sahibzada Ajit Singh carried on a great family tradition: that of attaining the status of one of the most hallowed martyrs in Sikh history. Before him and his brothers, their grandfather, the ninth Sikh Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur and great-great grandfather, the fifth Sikh Guru, Guru Arjun Dev had also been executed by the Mughals.

Sahibzada Jujhar Singh (1691–1705), the second son of Guru Gobind Singh, was born to Mata Jito (also known as Mata Sundari) at Anandpur Sahib on March 14, 1691. This event is now celebrated on April 9 each year according to the Nanakshahi Calendar).

Battle of Chamkaur

He was one of the band that successfully waded through the flooded Sarsa rivulet on horseback and made their way to Chamkaur by nightfall on 6 December 1705, with the adversary in hot pursuit. The band comprised his father, Guru Gobind, his elder brother Ajit and forty men. They erected a stockade (Garhi) and decided to fight to the last man.

By dawn, the Mughal forces of almost ten thousand had begun a siege of the Garhi. As they ran out of ammunition and arrows, the Sikhs inside split themselves into batches of five each who would go out one after the other to engage the besiegers in hand-to-hand combat. Jujhar Singh led the last sally towards the end of the day (7 December 1705), and laid down his life fighting near the place where he had earlier seen his elder brother fall. Gurdwara Qatalgarh in Chamkaur Sahib now marks the site where he and Ajit Singh fell.

Guru Gobing Singh Ji and Four Sahibzadas

Sahibzada Fateh Singh was the youngest of Guru Gobind Singh's four sons. He and his older brother, Sahibzada Zorawar Singh are among the most hallowed martyrs in Sikhism. He is also known as Baba Fateh Singh. The term Baba is used in India for an elder who is respected for his wisdom.

A combination of Mughals and hill men besieged Anandpur Sahib on the orders of emperor Aurangzeb. The stock of food in the town ran out. The Mughals promised to leave the Sikhs alone if they would hand over the fortress of Anandpur. To this Guru Gobind agreed and left the town with his family and a small band of retainers.

They had not gone very far when the Mughals, breaking their promise, came after them. Guru Gobind entrusted his two younger sons, Zorawar Singh and Fateh Singh as well as his mother, Mata Gujri, to the care of a cook in his household named Gangu.

Gangu brought Mata Gujri and the two Sahibzadas to his native village of Sahedi. Bribed by the Mughals, he turned over the three members of Guru Gobind's family to the faujdar of Morinda. They were then brought to Sirhind in the presence of Wazir Khan, the Nawab of Sirhind.
The two sons of Guru Gobind, Zorawar (9 years old) and Fateh (7 years old) were offered safe passage if they became Muslims. With a courage that belied their years, both boys refused to do so.

Wazir Khan sentenced them to death. They were bricked alive within a wall.

Although he did not know it then, but Wazir Khan was to pay for the crime that he had committed. After Guru Gobind Singh Ji's death, Madhodas Bairagi, a hermit from Nanded, whom the Guru baptised as Gurbaksh Singh, also known as Banda Bahadur, besieged the Punjab. After laying waste, the cities of Samana and Sandhaura, he moved towards Sirhind and after defeating the Mughal forces, killed Wazir Khan.

The place where the two sons of Guru Gobind Singh Ji were bricked alive is today known as Fatehgarh Sahib.
