The village Post Office at Sharlston seems to be a working Post Office, which is surprising when you consider the number of "cut-backs" that the Post Office has done over the years. Looking at the painted sign on the side of the building, you can't help but wonder how many years this building has been a post office? I didn't get to see Postman Pat or his cat though...

Just in case you didn't believe that this farm house is old - as in REALLY, REALLY old - here is the proof. The inscription above the door reads "R.T 1655". Now I think that that is old!

#64 A Very Old Farmhouse

Just outside Featherstone, just off of Wakefield Road (A645), there is a very old, dilapidated farm house. It is beyond any use whatsoever, but I have a funny feeling it is probably classified as a "listed building" so the owner can't do anything with it anyway - except to let nature take it's course.

#63 All Alone

Whilst walking the dog along the local public footpath I came across this balloon. It looked all lost and forlorn in the heavy undergrowth.

I don't know how it got their (or survived the decent through the thorns and nettles) but it didn't have one of those "If you find this, please return..." cards on it.

In the end the steam train uses coal, and that is the main reason why they were replaced - not because they were environmentally unfriendly, but because the diesel engines that replaced them were cheaper to run.

One of the club members at Thornes Miniature Railway explained to me that steam trains could be environmentally friendly if they burned wood/waste paper blocks, almost carbon neutral. I'm not totally convinced about the second half of his statement...

Thornes Miniature railway doesn't just do scale replica models of steam engines, there are some larger sized models (obviously working on the same gauge line). Dennis is not quite "Thomas the Tank Engine" but I don't think the young children, who hopped on for a ride, minded.

Large or small, the "Black Prince" is still an impressive feat of mechanical engineering.

I'm hoping to return to the miniature railway at Thornes to get some more pictures, and hopefully some of the engineering shed - the little boy inside me is screaming to get closer to these trains.

So who guessed what on #58? The trains at Thornes Park are both miniatures and real! For a small fare of 20p you get to have a ride on the carriages.

The owners of the trains work on them voluntarily. The trains belong to individuals of the club. This is their hobby.

The owner of the Black Prince built the train from scratch. It allegedly cost £20,000 to make. Not content with that, he is in the process of building a scale replica of "The Mallard."

There was another display of Birds of Prey at the Thornes Park fairground. "Blaze" is a Peregrine Falcon who just happened to be stretching his wings between shows!

Thornes Park was the host to another visiting fair/attraction.

I saw this sign and didn't doubt for one minute that that you could "win every time." There were more ducks queuing up than taxis on a Saturday night!

Another opportunity shot from my local field (and what I wouldn't have give for the Canon 100mm Macro lens on this occassion!) . I noticed there seemed to be dozens, if not hundreds, of ladybirds scattered around.

One of the more beautiful insects, but in the end it is just a colourful beetle with wings...

One afternoon I just needed to get out with the camera.

Not far from where I live there was a big wheat field (it has just been harvested). Most of the wheat was leaning over under it's own weight - except this one, which was standing head and shoulders above the rest. I'm convinced it was the look-out, waiting for the harvester!

Another stall, this time displaying homemade jams and other preserves.

The stall was run by a lady called Lisa. She not only produced jams, she also had some really nice hand-made greetings cards and jewellery on display. Even her business cards were very fancy!

This stall belonged to a lady called Louise. She attends galas like these to sell her own hand-made product.

My photo doesn't do her work justice - she had a range of products ranging from clocks to jewellery, with the central theme being that they are all made from clay and are individually hand-made (except some of the jewellery which is silver!). She even told me that she has her own kiln at home!

As with all local galas, activities, events and shows are a must. This was a local martial arts class showing off their abilities and skills.

The PA announcer assured everyone that "Wellie Throwing" would be held after in the centre show area after this event. Unfortunately I didn't get to see it because the rains happened not too long after and it was a very heavy downpour!

Well not quite Delboy and Rodney (or Dave), but it was scary how close this 3 wheeler looked to the original yellow Reliant Robin, even with blow-up dolls in the back (I hope they weren't inflated with propane gas!).

The vehicle wasn't just there to pull the ice cream van, it was a roaming advertisement for Eggleston Limo Hire.

#48 Netherton Gala

I managed to take a quick visit to the the Netherton Gala this weekend. It was held on Saturday 17th July behind Netherton Primary School. I was greeted by the 3 tractors that had been rescued and lovingly restored to their former glory. They date from the laste 1950s. The owners were going on to another fete being held in Ackworth. Over the last couple of week's there have been numerous galas held around the Wakefield area. It's a shame that I haven't been able to get to more. Maybe next year?

Unfortunately I only managed to take a few pictures as the rain came quite frequently and, at times, quite heavily. From what I could gather it is the first time such an event has been run at Netherton in the last few years. There were stalls, exhibitions and events being held. I arrived before lunch, and the crowds weren't that big; I think it was the rain that may have kept some people away. I hope the event runs next year.

You never have to worry about getting lost in Woolley! For starters there is only 2 roads in and out of the village. It also has it's own sort of "outer ring-road" (to cope with those awkward rush hour traffic problems). And if you do find that you ever got lost, just make your way to the village green and follow the sign posts!

The Village Hall at Woolley hasn't always been so. In the mid-eighteenth century it was the local school; this memorial stone is a testament to that. I am not sure when it stopped being so, but I bet the local children have a real trek to get to school nowadays.

I got the impression that not a lot happened in Wooley; it appeared to be a peaceful and tranqual place. They do have a Village Hall - but in line with all that was happening in the rest of the village, that was closed too!

Another village, another War Memorial. It always amazes me how many of these memorials, to our fallen heroes, that I see dotted around the small villages that I visit. I am also amazed at how well kept they are.

The wreaths appeared new(ish) and on this occasion I didn't after tidy up, before shooting, because of the actions of a mindless few!

Wooley has a High Street! I was surprised by this, as it is a VERY small village.

But before you all go jumping in your cars hoping to grab some bargains in quaint little shops, save your petrol; I didn't see a single shop anywhere along High Street, or anywhere else in the village in fact!
