Preparing to launch from a remote lake up in the Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness area of Northern Minnesota.

1.3 million acres in size, extending nearly 150 miles along the Canadian border. Solitude, challenge and personal integration with nature with no motorized boats or vehicles. Set aside in 1926, preserves a primitive place to canoe, portage and camp in the spirit of the French Voyageurs of 200 years ago..

Onward out into the deep reaches of space. A great distance away and I mean a distance that dwarfs understanding of distance lies Antares, a star our canoe voyager looking up from his campfire later that night listening to the call of the Loon might see glowing out from the Northern lights.

Antares the 16th brightest star in the sky and is about 600 Light years away from our solar system. Let me make sure I understand the scale of this and how I fit in...Light year - distance that light travels in a vacuum in 1 year = 5.88 trillion miles or 9.46 trillion kilometers multiplied by about 600 that would be roughly 3528 trillion miles or so...holy Einstein.

Antares lies within the zodiac constellation Scorpio this is the Mythology section from the wikipedia entry for Scorpius - "Scorpius resembles, quite noticeably, a scorpion's tail, and a vague body. According to Greek mythology, it corresponds to the scorpion which was sent by the goddess Hera(or possibly Gaia) to kill the hunter Orion. Although the scorpion and Orion appear together in this myth, the constellation of Orion is almost opposite to Scorpius in the night sky. It has been suggested that this was a divine precaution to forestall the heavenly continuation of the feud. However, in one version, Apollo sent the scorpion after Orion, having grown jealous of Artemis' attentions to Orion. Later, in contrition for killing her friend, Apollo helped Artemis hang Orion's image in the night sky. However, the scorpion was also placed up there, and every time it appears on the horizon, Orion starts to sink into the other side of the sky, still running from the attacker.

Oh, and if you haven't noticed yet - Antares is HUGE! That and the largeness of everything out in the greater OUT THERE and the HUGE distances has certainly put my self-importance in perspective....

I found some good music videos of Larry Carlton and Robben Ford while on tour in Japan during 2007. Good chemistry between them...Jazz. Jazz fusion. Whatever you want to call it, guitar played by two of the current greats. Good camera work on the fret work...nice to have if you want to take these tunes to the practice room like I'm doing and give it your best shot.

This is great place. Just 5 miles from Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone. Stayed there 2 nights. The first night in 205 on the lower level of building 2. $65. Very nice bright good size room that opened up to a porch with chairs and a lawn overlooking the Gardiner river rushing by, a bridge to the older section of town and a great wide open view of Yellowstone. Wow! The next night I moved to the much larger 235 in the same building. It's a corner room with kitchen/dining area on the third floor with a commanding view of everything mentioned below, except even more view – 180+ degrees. $80. In short it surpassed my expectations. Building 2 seems to have better views than 1. Joseph at the desk was stoic but efficient and helpful. The bald morning guy was a helpful quirky knucklehead. Was able to walk easily to some good inexpensive “cheap eats” restaurants – The Town Cafe and Sawtooth Deli across the bridge and Helen's Corral Drive-in on Absaroka's side down the main drag a few blocks. Gardiner for me was a nifty western town that hasn't become overly touristy and offered affordable options to stay eat and gas up. It turned out to be lucky I chose it because there were a bunch of fires left to burn in the park that closed roads and created plenty of smoke in southern areas, but left the northern area around the Grand Loop, Mammoth and Gardiner clear.

Senior Moments

I had a senior moment at Trader Joes yesterday - the cashier after taking my money and packing the groceries, asked me if I needed help taking the groceries to the car. I've never had that happen before and figure that it's usually reserved for the folks that really are much more senior than I. (:-()

Thankfully this morning I was hitting golf balls and ran into this guy around 40 doing the same thing. He has his own business and takes time early in the morning for golf. He figured I was doing the same and asked me what business I was in. I told him I was in the business of retirement - He said and I quote "But you're much to young to be retired!". (:-D)

That helped! Guess I had 2 senior moments...that makes me even...

ASUS Netbook 1000HE

I have the ASUS EEEeee! 1000HE 1gb 10" screen. It's a sweet little thing that does everything I want, has no problems, boots quickly, uses XP and Intel Atom, has a ton of storage, weighs little, has a small profile, screen size takes some adjustment, battery goes on all day, keyboard is quite good.

My electrician who looks like Homer Simpson and never fails to get shocked and burned whenever he does a job here, saw it and said "That there is the future". I agree and think it will continue to get better. Maybe Apple should be worried?

Lately I've noticed some amateur journalists on the web who go to events, do some reporting, take video/photos and post on their blog. Some of them are pretty good and informative.

Yesterday we had a freakish tornado downtown right outside the Convention Center and a Lutheran Church across the street - the Lutheran's were having a get together at both places concerning whether to have a more inclusive view towards gay sexuality. The tornado damaged the roof of the convention center and the steeple and windows of the church while they were deciding what to do. A Baptist pastor later said it was a gentle but firm warning to the Lutherans - Associated Baptist Press Report (pretty sure they have a baptist bias)

I was concerned and wanted to find out if my favorite record store - the Electric Fetus nearby had been damaged. If the Lutherans were getting a gentle and firm warning I greatly feared for the record store and staff. I collect old vinyl records and I was concerned of course if everyone was alright and also if the LPs were undamaged. I couldn't get much info on the radio or TV, but an amateur street reporter blogged from the scene outside this beloved store and posted pictures also. Thankfully there were just broken windows and roof damage - they got off lightly this time also. Perhaps with the dire financial state of newspapers and TV, internet reporting will become more important and then God help us all.
