Please note that the Shore Orchid Festival will be held in June this year. (June 10, 11, 12) We feel that this time change should give an opportunity for more pleasant weather here at the shore and will allow our customers a more comfortable climate in which to browse and enjoy themselves.

This event will feature twenty orchid vendors, with vendors coming from as far away as Japan. Please be sure to check out our vendor directory below for a complete list of participating sellers. The event will also feature workshops and lectures, covering a wide range of topics for both the novice and the advanced grower/collector. Schedule of lectures is being firmed up, and will be put onto this page in short order. A full line of orchids supplies will be sold at this event. We wish to make this a fun orchid event for everyone, you will be able to shop for orchids, visit with friends, old and new, enjoy good food from our on-site food vendors and have a great summer day or weekend at the Jersey Shore. Please feel free to contact us about hotel or Bed and Breakfast accommodations.

Keep in mind we are located 5 miles from the Jersey Shore, so now it is time to make any hotel, bed and breakfast, ect. reservation. A nice side benefit of moving the event to June is that this is not yet peak season, and reservation, (made in advance) should be more affordable.
Walter Off, whose family has been growing and selling the tropical plants in Linwood for 85 years, said digital sales help at this time of year.
“We have eBay and Amazon stores, and especially around the holidays we’ve found that makes a big difference,” said Off, 62, of Egg Harbor Township. “We’re selling a lot more on the Internet.”
Waldor’s fame among serious gardeners and its half-century of finding and raising orchids from around the world give it a product line highly suitable for online sales — much in demand and not many competing sources.
Off said that some of the classic cattleya orchids in the collection of his son, David, 31, also of Egg Harbor Township, are worth several thousand dollars each.
The other half of online retail success — shipping — is the challenge. Orchids are breakable and like to stay warm.
Off said he starts with a box that is sized properly for the plant, and puts a heavy stake in the middle of the plant that runs from one end of the box to the other.
“That way, even if the box gets turned upside down, the plant can’t go anywhere,” he said.
And this time of year, Waldor puts a heat pack in the box, which can keep the orchids warm for 24 or 36 hours, depending on how far they have to travel.
“We’ve perfected shipping to the point where we very seldom have complaints,” Off said.
Such handling still isn’t as good as what locals can do: Carefully place the potted flowers on the front seat of the car.
That will be the norm when Waldor holds its annual holiday sale, with
20 percent off all plants and supplies, today and again on Friday and Dec. 18.
Off said most orchids are much hardier than their delicately petaled flowers would suggest. A half million of them thrive in his Linwood greenhouses.
“We feel orchids are not challenging to grow. They’re a pretty tough plant to kill,” he said. “People kill them with kindness by overwatering or giving them too much light.”
In their native habitats, orchids can go for months without water, relying on stores in a pseudobulb in the roots, he said.
Some will bloom six months out of the year, unusual for a house plant. The flowers last three months and if broken off after that, they come back in another three months, he said.
The most popular at Waldor are the Phalaenopsis orchids, often called moth orchids for their resemblance to moths and butterflies.
These are the longest lasting orchids because they like typical home temperatures, he said. The flowers are white, pink, lavender or other pastel colors.
The Off family started in the orchid business growing large cattleya flowers that were popular at its Brighton Hotel in Atlantic City.
Walter Off’s father, George, created Waldor to diversify into a wide variety of smaller-bloom orchids in the 1960s, while his brother, Lou, pioneered the cloning of cattleya orchids.
By the late 1970s, Lou Off was producing 600,000 cattleyas a year. But large corsages went out of style and in 2007, the former Brighton Florist Shop and its greenhouses in Linwood were demolished.
Demand for unusual, exotic orchids grew over the past 50 years, and Waldor’s displays became an annual highlight of the Philadelphia Flower Show.
Now it’s Waldor that is cloning orchids to keep up with demand.
The company clones about 30 varieties in Thailand in a process that has the potential to produce up to 30,000 duplicates of the mother plant, Off said.
The clones are sent to a contract grower in Hawaii, where the more favorable climate yields a flowering size plant in four or five years instead of the five to eight it would take in Linwood, he said.
Since the resulting plants are genetically the same as the parent, “we can show customers what they’ll have in six months,” he said.
David Off, who oversees the cloning segment, occasionally travels to find new specimens for market — but to obscure private collectors, rather than tropical jungles. One in southern Florida has 2,500 types of orchids, of which 1,500 might be suitable for marketing, he said.
The continuing lines of orchids are matched by the generations of the Off family to run the business.
Linwood resident Elizabeth Off, who just turned 85, works along side her sons who own the business, Walter and Bill, of Somers Point, and her grandson, David.

Cold and Wet

With cold weather here to stay for the next three months or so, it is time to make sure we protect our prize plants from cold air. One sure way to infect your orchid with fungus is to it to them get wet and then allow them to get cold. Good watering techniques include watering early and also good air movement to ensure the plants are dry before temperatures drop. At the greenhouses, we only water using the sprinkler system on sunny days. Last week we watered early, but only had sun for a few hours. With the cloud cover, the flowers were still very wet hours later. To keep fungus, like botrytis, the small dark spots on the flowers from forming, we ran several fans in the greenhouse all night to dry it out. Be sure to take special care when watering plants that are developing new growth, as water sitting in the sheathing of the new growth can cause it to rot. Practicing proper watering techniques and having good air movement will help ensure healthy orchids all winter long.
http://feeds.feedburner.com/waldororchids

Waldor Orchids 2010 Holiday Sale

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;

Fall Chills

With the beautiful fall weather that descends on the northeastern United States this time of year, consider what it can do for your plants. Some orchids love to cool off during the night hours. Others need a drop in temperature to initiate new flower spikes. Most orchids will benefit from a general slowing of growth due to cooler weather and develop better color in the flowers as a result of the same. A note of caution would be to be sure that warmer growing plants are protected on the coolest nights and special care is taken not to allow plants to sit wet when it is cold as that is prime conditions to infect the orchid with fungus or rot. So get some friends together, stoke the chiminea and enjoy an evening of the cool fall chills.
http://feeds.feedburner.com/waldororchids

David's Monthly Orchid Tip August 2010

The Simple Joys of Orchid Growing
I was reading the January 1945 AOS Bulletin and an article intriqued me. Edna Richter, then the secretary of the AOS was looking through the greenhouses of Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Wilcox Jones, the former being AOS president at the time. At the greenhouses, called Broadview, she gives a personal account of walking around the potting area, and greenhouses. The words she writes reveal the passion of an avid orchid grower. She takes time to appreciate the potting area how things are well kept and organized. Then as she tours the greenhouses and comes across blooming plants she is struck with awe at the beauty and detail of the flowers. In her wandering she also notices things like plants in bud, potting mediums and a hidden goldfish pool. The show table was said to be the main attraction, Mrs. WK duPont had even taken the time to cut a spray of her famous C. Remy Chollet `Stillpond' and bring it to the meeting, since the cold weather did not permit easy travel with the plant itself. As I read on I realized that these founding members of the AOS were just plain excited to get together and enjoy their mutual love for orchids. We should take some time to just look at our plants, to handle them and appreciate the fact that they are so readily available to us. I'd like to end with this quote from our tour guide from 65 years ago, "As I retraced my steps I felt that the day was over too soon and I wondered if I could retain the picture that was in my mind's eye and fit in my notes so that our members who could not attend the meeting would feel that they, to, had walked along the paths through the orchids at Broadview."
http://feeds.feedburner.com/waldororchids

Shore Orchid Festival Friday July 23-25, 2010

http://feeds.feedburner.com/waldororchids
