"Brand new car, pleasant persons."

In the beginning of July 2012 we rented a Suzuki Jimnny convertible with A/C at a very good price considering the "as brand as new" state of the car. Mister Michalis, one of the employees waiting us on the airport and explained very good and friendly all the rental terms. It was not required any Credit Card or other kinds of guaranties. We did not had any problems with the little red Jimnny. At the end of rental period ( 13 days ) we returned the car on the airport and handed the car keys to the parking guardian. It was a pleasure to rent from them. Very pleasant persons ( Mr. Anifantakis and Mr. Michalis ) We enjoyed the time spent in that cute red Suzuki Jimnny, and certainly I will recommend Anna Cars to any of my friends. And on a small side street in Rethymnon, on the northern coast of Crete, Yiorgos Hatziparaskos is consistently proving that, turning out handmade filo dough with the belief that quality is better than quantity, and that patience and skill are two more ingredients that help define such a quality product.

Off to the side, Yiorgos’s wife silently cuts small pieces of baklava, crunchy pastries of her husband’s product layered with pistachios and dripping with honey; you can’t leave without trying something that showcases his hard work in its intended form. Her quiet sales pitch works, and the product speaks for itself. The flaky pastry crackles and breaks cleanly, without the usual cascading shards sputtering out of your mouth. This means it’s hasn’t lost its texture, but it’s still moist enough to stay together. It’s everything you could want from filo dough.

... And Yiorgos clearly enjoys his work. He plays the showman for groups who come to see him work, but you can see in the way that he handles the dough and from the aura he exudes while he putters around in a cloud of flour that it’s not a chore for him, but a pleasure. When someone is so excited about what they’re doing, it makes you all the more excited to be a part of it. And with Yiorgos’s excitement, flour, water, oil and salt became a simply complex wonder.

For over half a century Yiorgos Haziparaskos has been busy in his workshop on Manouil Bernardou Street in the Old Town of Rethymno, making Kadaifi in the traditional way, just as he did when he started: syrup, nuts, lot's of love and passion and ofcourse with the handmade filo pastry made in the traditional way.

He has been doing this job since 1946, when he was 25 years old, first as an apprentice and from 1958 till today in his own shop, in the same place in the Old Town. If you by chance should meet him when he opens his shop, don't be surprised if he arrives with his bicycle, defying the Doctors who have on many occasions advised him to retire.

Traditional Filo Master of all Greece! (picture taken from: themindlesseye.blogspot.gr)

... is one of the last traditional Filo Masters in all of Greece. He makes super-fine pastry by hand in his traditional workshop. He has been doing this for over 60 years, ably assisted by his wife Katerina for the last 50. The Baklava and Kataifi is by far the best I have ever eaten. If you are ever in Rethymno, Crete, indulge yourself.

The bungalows and double rooms, 25 in all, face the sea. Those on the upper floor offer a sea view. Those on the ground floor look out over the splendid garden.

Caring for stray cats and dogs - Gouves, Crete, Greece - Welcome

Here are some pictures of the cats that we take care of in our area. "Asia" gave birth on our balcony and her little ones have grown quite quickly and are looking healthy and attractive. A little orphan, "Murka" (I call her "Spots"), has joined us from the Hotel next door, it has been accepted by "Asia" and the others and there is hope for it.

My girlfriend, Foteini, gives them Russian names and I give them English or Greek names, he, he. :-)

Malia is situated on the North Coast of Crete, just 25 minutes from the airport in an area of great natural beauty; it is surrounded by olive groves and the slopes of Mt. Selena. Malia is best known for its lively atmosphere; however Malia is not only for young people, it has a lot to offer everyone. The beach is the one of the best in Crete, 3 miles of fine, golden sand, which gradually slopes into the warm, clear blue sea. Malia gives you the best of both worlds since it consists of two parts; the new town and the old town which are separated by the main road; in the new town there are lots of bars, clubs and restaurants to suit everyones taste. In the picturesque old town there are many winding narrow streets where you will find lots of traditional Greek tavernas and small coffee shops. Malia is situated in an ideal location to be used as base whilst you explore the rest of Crete: Agios Nikolaos - 18 miles (30km) Heraklion - 20 miles (32km) Hersonissos - 5 miles (6km) Sissi - 5 miles (6km) Stalis -1 mile (1.6km).

Beaches:

Malias beach is over 3 miles long with fine golden sand that gradually slopes into the warm, clear blue sea. The beach is split up into areas each offering something different; loud or chilled music, water sports and some, if you dont like the sand and sea, have a pool and grassed area. Each area has its own bar and café/restaurant where you can get food delivered to your sun bed or you can sit in the shade and relax out of the sun. Some of the beaches are run by hotels; the majority are open to the public and will welcome your custom. Malia is made up of six beaches; walk along the sand away from Malia town, first you will come to Glozanie Beach (Malias main beach) then Pyrgos, follow the beach around you will come to Agia Pneuma (Holy Spirit) named after the tiny church that sits on the rocky outcrop just before Malia Marina. The marina which is still in the process of being built has a lovely fish restaurant where you can sit and watch the boats, then Sun Beach, which not only has the sea, sun beds umbrellas, but also has trampolines, two swimming pools, one of which is for children with slides and inflatables then you come to Tropical Beach, which is a large expanse of sand, with a few sun beds and umbrellas and a couple of cafes where you can get refreshments from, this leads onto Potamos Beach which is used a lot by the local people, it is lined with trees along the road which gives natural shade and one small Greek Taverna where you can relax and enjoy the local cuisine. Potamos Beach is renowned for its cleanliness and was voted the cleanest beach in Europe in 1997.

Water Sports: All kinds of water sports are available from the water sports centre situated on the beach, which include: Jet Skis, Banana Boat, Flying Fish, Ringos, Water Skiing, Pedaloes and Parasailing. It is also possible to do some of the water sports from the hotel beaches.

Diving: There are many diving centres around Malia all of which offer the full range of PADI diving courses whether you are a novice or experienced diver, all equipment you will need is provided.

Boat Trips: There are many boat trips available from Malia and the surrounding area, if you want to get away from the beach for a day cruise, to go fishing or to visit one of the smaller islands, there is something to suit everyones taste.

Nightlife:

Malia is a lively, atmospheric resort especially at night when the town comes to life; the bars open at 8pm and continue right through until the early hours of the morning. The majority of the bars and clubs are situated on the Y shape in the centre of Malias new town, there are two roads leading from the main road that join half way through the resort and continue on down to the beach. There is a bar or club to suit everyones taste whether you are young or old, from 60s music and karaoke right up to the latest tunes which can be heard every night of the week during the summer season.

There is a twenty four hour bar which is situated just outside the town about 10 mins walk from the centre where if you want to carry on partying after the clubs have shut you can. There is also a Gay bar (the only one in Crete) five minutes further out of town.

As you can see, things are happening here.

The complex abstains 15 kilometers from the city center of Heraklion and 10 minutes from the airport and port, and has direct access to the old and the new highway national road.
The former U.S. base of Gournes, is housing the Gouves Municipality’s services, the elementary school, High School, Lyceum and the Professional Training Institutes. Sports facilities, a hospital, shopping centers etc. are intended to be constructed in the base area, infrastructures that create the best conditions for permanent or holiday residency.
There is a bus stop in front of the complex.

Stalida (Greek: Σταλίδα, older form Stalis) is a village that lies between Malia and Hersonissos on the north coast of Crete, Greece. It is a lively resort, attracting tourists from many European countries. It has a long, sandy beach and a variety of bars and tavernas. Popular with families, it is 30 km from Nikos Kazantsakis airport in Heraklion.

The Stalis, Crete

Stalis is on the North east coast of Crete between Malia and Hersonissos and is a relaxed resort popular with British holidaymaker's, European holidaymaker's from the Netherlands and Germany and very popular with Irish tourists, so you will find a wealth of Irish bars in Stalis.

The town of Stalis is situated on the main beach and most hotels, bars and restaurants run parallel to the beach. You will find traditional restaurants, small welcoming bars and pubs as well as the odd small dancing club or two...

Situated in one of the most beautiful areas with its sandy beaches on the north coast, Stalis offers the ideal starting point by its central geographical location (30km to the airport and the capitol of the island, Heraklion), to discover the whole island...

The sea is very cool and inviting.

Zoodohou Pigis (Lifegiving Water/Well) Church

This amazing little Church can be found behind the Laguna Beach Hotel. I saw the signs for this Church from last year in August, but I could never find it, somehow it eluded me. I found it eventually a few days ago and here are some pictures. I'll let the pictures do most of the talking, thanks, enjoy! :-)

The small room next to the Church is full of Icons and you can light a candle and say a prayer.

Very interesting and inspiring collection of Icons. The big one on the left (Ierosolomitisa/Jerusalemite) and the smaller one in the middle of Mary and little Jesus are very impressive!

Notice the Greek flag rolled up and tucked away at the top...

Hersonissos Coves

The Coves of Hersonissos are located 27km east of Heraklion, starting from Cape Sarandaris and continuing to the east till the harbour of Hersonissos. They are really beautiful beaches with calm waters, since Cape Sarandaris protects them from the northwest winds. Access to all coves is easy and the surrounding area is well developed. The busy Hersonissos town is within walking distance, but if you want to stay at night close to the coves, there are several bars and cafes. Let’s now see the beaches, starting from the west.

How can one not smile in such surroundings!?...

The westernmost beach that you will find here is not actually a beach, but a large smooth dock from where you can dive. It is located on the west part of the rocky Cape Sarandaris, near the picturesque chapel of St. George. Close to the picturesque chapel, there is a staircase leading to the rock. On the rock, you might see the umbrellas of the nearby hotels. Swimming along the rocks is a great experience, as this place is a very good choice for snorkeling.

On the base of the Cape Sarandaris, you'll find the amazing beach of Sarandaris Cape, maybe the nicest and mostly protected (from winds) beach in Hersonissos area. It is a sandy beach with shallow water and vivid blue colors. The beach is not too crowded because climbing down from the whitish limestone cliffs is needed to access that. However, it surely deserves a visit. This is our favorite beach in Hersonissos area.

Most believe that naturist beaches are found only on the remote coasts of southern Crete. However, this is not absolute and Hersonissos is one of these exceptions. Indeed, just next to the beach at the base of Sarandaris Cape, there is a second nudist beach well protected by high cliffs and prying eyes. The sand here alternates with rocks and water is always calm. It is a very good choice for swimming and isolation. To get here you have to follow the main road that runs alongside the coves and heads to Anisaras. At the point where the road changes direction, vertical to the shore, keep going straight in the dirt track. After 50 meters you will find the beach below your right hand. Climbing is necessary as well, or you can walk along the coast from the beach of Sarandari.

Dreamscape!

Immediately, after the nudist beach there is the amazing beach of Sarandari (this is actually known as Sarandari, as this is the most popular beach in Sarandaris area), which is the first sand-only beach of the area. A short trail leads to the beach, which starts from the main road. The water in Sarandari is shallow and the sand is fine, perfect for kids. On the beach there are umbrellas, sunbeds and a small canteen. A common problem of the beach is the seaweeds that gather there.

Does such a place actually exist on this planet!?

Immediately after Sarandari and adjacent to the coastal road, you will find the beach of Giofyri, with the tall concrete wall surrounding it. The beach has white coarse sand (some people call it “rice”), has deeper waters than Sarandari and its bottom is quite rocky. The beach is very well organized with umbrellas and sunbeds, and gets crowded.

I kid you not!

From Giofyri, if you head to the east along the coast road, you will see numerous very small and narrow beaches, where the sand is combined with white rocks and the water color has beautiful blue hues. The same scenery continues till the point where the road changes direction and you meet the hotel of Creta Maris. From there you can walk along the coast until you reach the large and wide beach in front of the hotel, ending at the port of Hersonissos, near the hill of Kastri. It is very well organized with sun beds and umbrellas, water sports and tennis beach volley. As you head towards the harbor, it gets busier and more vulnerable to winds. Lastly, after the hotel, the seaside road reappears and runs along the coastline to the port. The road is full with shops, cafes and restaurants.

You'll never get bored here...

Even if you do not want to swim in the Coves, an afternoon stroll from Port to the Cape of Sarandaris is a unique experience. Do not forget your camera, in order to take pictures of the chapel of St. George in Sarandaris and the magical views of Hersonissos Bay. Moreover, in the port of Hersonissos it is worth walking to the lighthouse and visiting the church of Agia Paraskevi, a part of which is built into the rock. On Kastri Hill there are findings of an early Christian church, with many mosaics in good condition.

Crete is the largest island of Greece and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean. A mountainous island, it lies south of the Aegean Sea, a link between Europe, Africa and Asia. This geographical position, being at the junction of major civilizations and cultural currents, influenced its history throughout the past 5000 years.

Crete has an elongated shape, 260 km long from east to west and between 15 and 60 km wide. The coastline is over 1000 km long and consists of both sandy beaches and rocky shores. The high mountains are a characteristic of the Cretan landscape. They form three mountain complexes, each with its own personality. Between the ranges lie semi-mountainous zones which cover the greater part of the island. There are also a few low lying plains as well as a number of high plateaus.

Crete has about 600.000 inhabitants, of which over a third live in the towns of Heraklion, Hania and Rethymnon. The rest of the island is sparsely populated, with large tracts of mountainous areas frequented only by shepherds.

Crete has become a very popular holiday destination for northern Europeans. The current number of visitors per year is around 3 million. Most of them arrive by charter to Heraklion or Hania airport.

Traveling eastwards you can visit the anciend ruins of the town Gournia, the most southern town in Europe, Ierapetra and Agios Nikolaos with it's pretty harbour and seafront cafeterias. A visit to the monastery of Toplou is on the way just before arriving at Vai beach with it's crystal clear waters and palm fringed beach.

Everyone should visit the Minoan Palace of Knossos. It was excavated and reconstructed by Sir Arthur Evans. It was a political, religious and economical center while the rest of Europe was still uncivilized. The Palace was an intricate,multi-storeyed structure and it's labyrinh is said to be where Thesaus slew the Minotaur.

Heading south, through the Messara plain you will pass through Gortys leading to Phaestos Palace, the second largest Minoan Palace. Further south is the town of Matala, on the Libyan Sea, an ideal spot for lunch and a swim.

If you decide to travel high up into the Cretan mountains you'll pass Kera Monastery and the Gateway to the Plateau on your way. pectacular scenery awaits you traveling through traditinal Cretan villages brings us to the Dikti Gave and Zeus birth place.

The beautiful wild and rugged landscape of the west is a complete contrast to the east. You can visit Arkadi Monastery, Rethymnon, with it's Turkish and Venetian influence and Chania with it's leather market and Venctian harbour. Also there are the cemetries of Souda and Maleme.

The beach of Anissaras, a sandy beach close to the popular and well developed tourist resort of Kato Gouves, is found 20 kilometres far from Heraklion at the East. Open to the Cretan Sea, the beach is affected by the northern winds. The seabed is partly rocky, which makes it suitable for snorkelling.

Enjoying the sea, sand & sun!

Well organised, close enough to Heraklion and the tourist resorts of Kato Gouves and Chani Kokkini, the beach covers all the needs of the visitors in accommodation and food and drink. Facilities for swimming and sunbathing (sunbeds, umbrellas ) and sea sports are also available.

The end of the beach is much less crowded, so if you like being isolated, you may find the place it fits you at this part of the beach.

Access from Heraklion is possible by public bus, running regularly, taxi from Heraklion and rented and private car and motorbikes.

The village of Sissi

Sissi is located 40 km from Iraklionand 25 km from Agios Nikolaos, near to all the places you should see but yet quiet and calm.

Analipsis is roughly 24 kilometres east of Heraklion, shortly after Gouves and before Anissaras. It is also known as Analipsis Hersonissou, as it is very close to the seaside resort of Hersonissos.

Analipsis is built along a long road, running over a kilometre from the old Heraklion - Agios Nikolaos National Road down to the beach.

Analipseos, the main Church of Analipsi.

The village of Analipsi is found approximately 20 km east from the city of Heraklion, the Capital of the island of Crete and only 5 minutes (by car that is [my insert]) from the popular tourist resort of Hersonissos. It is very easy to reach even if it's your first time because of the New Highway from Heraklion to Gouves. After Gouves you have to continue for 5 km more on the Old Highway, so as to reach the village.

You'll be pleasantly surprised if you go and eat at Zorbas Tavern, the food is good! The owner, George is an excellent host, tending to your every need. There are a lot of interesting things to eat and drink, the atmosphere is great and George and his son, Dimitri are friendly and very interesting to talk to.

You must try the Starters (Meze in Greek), two people can try a whole range of Starters/Meze, different plates and you don't even have to eat a main course meal. Trying various plates of Starters for two people costs Euros 22 and you can pick and choose what you want. It's a great deal! Don't forget to drink Calypso afterwards, it's a nice coffee liquer drink with cream, need I say anymore.

There's cars and bikes to see too, all on display! You can chat to George, he knows a lot about the region and is an expert guide for hikes. So as you can see it's not only about the food...

We arrived with our yellow rented scooter. The impressive black B.M.W you see, is on display (apparently it costs Euros 20, 000! It's not for sale, though)

Postcard Pictures: The lost city of Atlantis: The picturesque fishing village of Elounda on the Gulf of Korfos in Eastern Crete embraces its vivid Minoan, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Ven...

It boasts the sunken remains of the lost Minoan city of Olous; the remains of a Byzantine chapel, Venetian salt flats and French feats of engineering.

A small stone bridge over a canal (Poros) links the mainland with a seven kilometer isthmus - the Spinalonga Peninsular, colloquially named Kolokythia (zucchini in Greek).

The canal was built by the French Army in 1897 in order to link the Gulf of Mirabello Bay with Korfos Bay.

Turn right at the Poros past two old windmills and head behind the little church to a 4th Century Byzantine church. All that remains is a beautiful mosaic floor featuring dolphins frolicking in the bay.

Folklore suggests that Olous may in fact be the lost city of Atlantis, and when the waters of the bay are calm, it is possible to snorkel over the walls to explore the sunken the remains.

Touring in Crete: Spinalonga island and Elounda village

Elounda

Olous or Olus is an ancient, sunken city situated at today’s town of Elounda in Crete.

Archaeologists discovered ancient texts within the ruins linking the town to the ancient cities of Knossos and the island of Rhodes. The sunken city can be visited by tourists swimming in Elounda Bay. Today, the only visible remnants of the city are some scattered wall bases.

Olous, and accordingly the wider region, were depopulated at the middle of the 7th century because of the raids of the Arab pirates in the Mediterranean Sea. Olous remained deserted until the mid-15th century when the Venetians began to construct salt-pans in the shallow and salty waters of the gulf. Subsequently, the region acquired commercial value and became inhabited. This fact, in combination with the emergent Turkish threat, particularly after the Fall of Constantinople in 1453, and the continuous pirate raids, forced the Venetians to fortify the island of Spinalonga.

Sharpening Stones Elouda

Eloudas sharpening stone is famous the world over for its unique capacity to impart an extremely fine finish to a cutting edge. No other oilstone can approach the sharpening characteristics of this beautiful creation of nature. Elouda Stone is geologically classified as pyritolithos. Pyritolithoi are very hard, fine-grained siliceous rock, probably of sedimentary origin. They are nearly pure Silica and can be many times harder than marble.

The whetstone is a kind of fine emery, composed of layers of sillicic sedimentary substances created by micro-organisms. The sharpeners, used for the grind of different metallic tools, are extracted from regular layers of whetstones usually white, which exist between other rocks of different structure.

The whetstone is a typical product of Elounda which started to be extracted from the ancient times and continues to be extracted in our days. This abrasive stone, produced on the high grounds and the slopes of Michaela, Damianos, Vihala, Karfi, Leskes and Baloma mountains, is unique and though abrasive stones are extracted also in other parts of the planet (as in California-USA) no other has the form of Elounda’s whetstone. The visitor can see on the slopes and on the high grounds of these mountains the rubbles, the pits and the quarries that have been opened.

Historical reports to the whetstones of Elounda begun from Homer (Iliad, raps. B, verse 649: cited as “Halkodaman akonan”) and they continued to exist up to the later Ottoman domination in the sightseers’ transcripts. In these documents the whetstones are presented, depending on the time period, as "Naxia stone" (Naxos was a city on the top of Oxa mountain), or as "Turkish Stone" or even as "stone of the East".

At this moment Elounda produces 150 tons of whetstones whereof approximately 50 tons are exported to various countries. The market price of the treated whetstones is approximately one Euro per kilo. However the fact that the young people are interested in other professions mainly tourist, the metier of grinder inclines to disappear.
During the last years the Development Company of Elounda (K.EP.AN.EL) labours for the creation of a Salt and Whetstone Museum though many administrative constraints have been presented for its construction.

Mineralogy.

The Cretan rock appears to be some kind of Novaculite. Novaculite is a sedimentary rock, formed during the Devonian era, composed mostly of microcrystalline quartz and is basically a recrystallized variety of chert. The various incarnations of Quartz is a complex matter. In a simplified nutshell, we can say that quartz occurs in macrocrystaline, microcrystaline and cryptocrystaline forms. Macrocrystaline grains are too coarse for sharpening purposes and therefore detrimental to the edge. Quartz inclusions of this kind are to be avoided.
Cryptocrystaline quartz forms a fibrous structure without any significant grains. The finest translucent Arkansas Novaculites are a well known example. They are as extremely fine-cutting as they are slow.
Microcrystaline quartz forms a fine granular structure. Fast-cutting oilstones generally are a mixture of microcrystaline and cryptocrystaline quarts. The former accounts for grains and the latter for randomly oriented fibers. Both add to the abrasive properties, though in distinct ways. Hardness approximates 7 Mohs, which is sufficient for sharpening hardened steel. The size of the grains and fibers defines he coarseness/fineness of an oilstone, and plays a key role in the abrasive potential (read: speed).

I have done some more french google search and found some documents. In the beginning of the 19th century there seem to be a distinction between pierre du Levant, pierre de Lorraine and pierre d'Amérique (Arkansas stone?). The later arrived in France in the first part of the 19th. La pierre du Levant was carried to Marseilles from the east. According to a source, this stone came from Candie (Heraklion) and was put in olive oil for 4 or 5 monthes to harden it.

Candia ,Heraklion is same.Heraklion is the curent name of the Crete capital. Candia is an ancient Venetian name.Elounda where is the mine located in the larger area of Heraklion like Ol Preu for coticule.

In Crete, the carob trees thrive in difficult soils and like arid conditions that are naturally free of fungus and pests. Thus, the uses of chemical sprays are not necessary on Crete Island. The tree grows 15 m in 50 years. It does not bear fruit for the first 15 years. However, once fruiting, it will yield one ton of beans in one harvest.
Carob pods are harvested in the middle of September. The growing carob pods look like green broad beans but they turn to a dark glossy brown as they age. Each pod can contain up to 15 seeds.

History

Carob has a long history in human consumption. The Greek Theophrastus recorded in 4BC that his fellow Greeks called the carob the Egyptian Fig. There is also evidence that Ancient Egyptians used carob. Both the pods and seeds have been found in Egyptian Tombs. Further, the Romans ate the Carob pods when they were green and fresh for their natural sweetness. Thus, Carob is no newly discovered food. As the founder of Creta Carob, Elias Manousakas states "It is the lost treasure of Crete''.
