We have two special guests for our 50th podcast episode.
Bob and Trish Evans are a husband and wife creative duo. They are experienced jugglers who hold world records for joggling (juggling while running) for male and female in the 5K and 10K. Trish's 5K PR is 19:46, and Bob's is 16:34.

They also competed in a sprint triathlon, juggling the entire time. They swuggled (swimming while juggling), unijuggled (rode a unicycle while juggling), and joggled (juggled while running). They use their talent and the attention they get to help charities in need. For their triathlon, they raised over $3,500 for the Special Olympics.

Bob and Trish also enjoy sharing about juggling in school assemblies to teach children that fitness can be fun.

Rob Verhelst, or "Fireman Rob" is a twelve year Madison, Wisconsin Firefighter. Just over 11 years ago, Rob found himself working for eight days as part of the search and rescue team in New York City following the horrific attacks of September 11.

Then on the ten year anniversary of the attacks, Rob found himself competing in the Wisconsin Ironman competition. During the competition's 26.2 mile run portion, in memory of his fallen comrades, Rob wore his firefighters coat, pants, helmet, and air pack as a way of paying respect and homage to the sacrifices made on 9/11 but also as a way to raise awareness for the Code 3 for a Cure Foundation.

Keith Levasseur ran the Baltimore Marathon on October 13th. In flip-flop sandals. He is currently in the process of contacting the Guinness Book of World Records to enter his feat in as the fastest marathon time in sandals. His time was 2 hours and 46 minutes!

We shared his story on our Facebook page earlier this week and our fans were very intrigued. We decided to track Keith down to get the story in his own words. He answered all of our questions that include everything from how many training runs he did in flip-flops to exactly why he wanted to run a full marathon in these shoes.

Yesterday we headed to the Chicago Marathon media center at the Hilton Hotel in Chicago. Three weeks ago, we sat down with Wesley Korir to talk about his plans for the Chicago Marathon this Sunday, October 7th. We had an exclusive interview with Craig Leon, an elite runner on the field this year for the United States. Craig seemed very relaxed among his competition. He explained that in nearly every marathon he's competed in- he tends to get a personal record by about three minutes. He feels that there's no reason he cannot do that on Sunday. Craig averaged 115 miles per week in training with a peak mileage week of 135 miles.

Catching up with Wesley Korir 3 Weeks Before Chicago

 <a href="http://www.walkjogrun.net/blog/images/wesley_wjr_large.JPG" img alt="WalkJogRun"class="fbox">

Elite runner Wesley Korir took first place in the Boston Marathon this year and second place at the Chicago Marathon last year. We got the chance to sit down with him and discuss what it was like growing up in Kenya, why he loves to run and all about his pre-race meal.

In 2008 Wesley Korir entered the Chicago Marathon as a regular runner, starting five minutes behind the elite group. He still finished with the fourth fastest time of the day, which then propelled his career into professional status.

This week on the WalkJogRun podcast, we interviewed Heather McDonald-Hamilton, a wife and mother of three. Heather is such an inspiration to us because of her love for marathon running.

Her goal is to run 100 marathons and join the 100 Marathon Club. She's moving very quickly towards that goal. She also wants to break the UK record for most marathons completed in 12 months in the UK (the current record is 61 and Heather hopes to do 67). Heather has run 40 marathons so far this year.

Heather became interested in running after watching her friend run the London Marathon. After watching the excitement at the race, she decided to run it the next year in 2007. Heather has not stopped running marathons since.

Could you imagine running a marathon...blindfolded? What about running 12 marathons in one year blindfolded?

That is exactly what this week's podcast guest, EJ Scott has to do because of a rare genetic eye condition called Choroideremia. This condition causes progressive vision loss and the sunlight makes it worse. This year EJ decided to run 12 marathons in 12 months...blindfolded.

This week on the WalkJogRun Podcast, we interviewed Julie Guarducci, an ex-smoker and lung cancer survivor who now is training for her first marathon despite a collapsed lung which affects her breathing.

We transcribed this podcast below, or you may choose to listen to the audio.

Quitting smoking, starting running and a cancer diagnosis

Caitlin: Would you mind sharing a little bit about your story and how that led to you becoming interested in running?

<a href="http://www.walkjogrun.net/blog/images/julie-g.JPG" img alt="WalkJogRun"class="fbox">

Julie: Sure. Probably around the time that I quit smoking, I decided that it was time to get healthy all around. So I quit smoking, decided to try and start eating properly, and I also joined a gym. I was working with a trainer and doing quite a few spin classes. I kind of got bored with that and then started running on the treadmill, so that's how my running started.

Caitlin: At what point did you get your cancer diagnosis?

Julie: I was diagnosed in July of 2010. I think it was about 2 years after I had quit smoking that I was diagnosed.

Caitlin: Wow, is that very common?

Julie: Looking back at what I now know to be symptoms, I think I had the cancer when I started working out at the gym. I just didn't know it. I didn't know what the signs were.

Caitlin: How did you gradually go about building up your mileage having just quit smoking. Was it difficult to do that?

Julie: It was difficult. But I think what helped me is that I was doing spin classes, and spin classes are very much a cardio class if you haven't done them before. It really gets the heart going and breathing really hard. I think that helped me, and when I did meet a running coach, because I told her I had been running on the treadmill and that I had been doing spin classes, I think she thought that I was good to go. And my first run, she sent me out on three miles, and I thought I was going to die. But I did it. It was more of a run/walk, but I did it. She does it in increments of two: two weeks you do three miles, two weeks you do five miles, and two weeks you do seven miles to build up your mileage. But by my third week, she had me at seven miles and I was like, 'I can't do this.' I did the seven. It was tough, but then she realized I really hadn't been running as much as she had originally thought. So she cut me back down and started gradually building my mileage back up.

Could you imagine running 100 miles in a week (160km)? Well Joanna Reuland, Marketing Manager at the San Francisco Marathon has logged quite a few 100 mile weeks. She began running years ago as a way of bonding with her father, a cancer survivor. Joanna loves her weekend long runs and is perfectly comfortable spending a few hours on the trails on the weekend.

In this podcast, Joanna shares why running is important to her and why she decided to run the San Francisco Marathon...twice. She began running late in the night the day before the race before joining the other marathon participants on the field the morning of the race last Sunday.

How to Stay Safe While Running

Safety is very important, especially for runners. Sometimes we're out there running when no one else is around. It's important for runners to be aware of their surroundings and know the risks that can be associated with running so that they can protect themselves.

In this podcast we spoke with Rebecca E., who was chased down the lakefront running path in Chicago a few weeks ago. Luckily she managed to get away from the man who was chasing her. Officer Nieto of the Chicago Police Department also joined in on the call to discuss how to stay safe while running. She also offered advice on what to watch out for and how to be sure you're always aware of your surroundings.

Running for a Cause

Toby Tanser's journey through running has been filled with ups and downs. He's an ex-smoker turned runner who jumped head first into running shortly after moving to New York City. He immediately became involved with the New York Road Runners and helping out with the New York Marathon. Toby is a running coach and author.

Shortly after moving to New York City, he traveled to Africa for the first time. On one particular visit, he was attacked by men who wanted his shoes. This attack was so brutal, that he required brain surgery and months of rehabilitation. Despite this attack, he started the charity "Shoe 4 Africa," which provides shoes for people in need throughout Africa.

The Community of The Half Fanatics & Marathon Maniacs

This week I had the pleasure of interviewing with four members of the Marathon Maniacs and Half Fanatics. This organization consists a great group of people of all ages who simply love to run. The organization is internet based, and many members meet through Facebook or noticing another member at a race wearing a shirt.

Heather Zeigler, Marathon Maniac #3086 and Half Fanatic #1343

Diane Miller, Half Fanatic #1842

Bob Miller, Marathon Maniac #3875 and Half Fanatic #506

Abbi Florence, Marathon Maniac #5102, and Half Fanatic #933

If you've never heard of the Marathon Maniacs of the Half Fanatics, you probably don't know what any of these numbers mean. The Marathon Maniacs are a group of people who love to run marathons. The same follows for the Half Fanatics, but they prefer half marathons. Those who are a Marathon Maniac and Half Fanatic, are called double agents. The organization is international, and if you send in your race date information you get assigned a number which shows what number you are within the organization.

It was great getting to talk with these Half Fanatics and Marathon Maniacs. I was curious about the organization since meeting Bob at the Fox Valley Marathon Expo in 2011. He was there sporting his Half Fanatics jacket. You can see him with us in the photo below.

In this episode we interviewed Erin Henderson, a mother with 12 children, 9 of whom were adopted. She is also a fairly new runner. Erin has made big strides since going out for her first run three years ago. She has greatly improved her pace, run multiple marathons, including Boston as a qualifier. She is now sponsored by Brooks and part of their Team program.

One of the most interesting aspects of Erin's life is her schedule. She wakes up every morning at 4:00 to go running. That's right, she runs every day.

Tips for the Triathlon Transitions

The main focus to most of our blogs and podcasts is running. Well, there is a three sport event that includes running, biking and swimming. The sport of triathlon! This week I spoke with Kristy Petrillo, an experienced triathlete with tons of tips for newbies. Her introduction to athletics started with the triathlon. Since beginning to compete, she has run a few half marathons.

For her, the triathlon is a great way to fit in cross training. I think she's right! The triathlon is something we should all try at some point, even if it's just the sprint distance. The triathlon is an easy way to train different muscles, as each sport focuses highly on a different muscle.

Be sure you tune in to the podcast to hear about a special giveaway in honor of the 25th episode!

The diet of a runner is very important. Food is what keeps our bodies sustained to run all the miles we do. We've talked to many runners on the WalkJogRun podcast who have shared their views in conversation from everything from eating meat, to eating vegetarian.

This week we interviewed Katie Visco, who ran 3,200 miles in nine months at the age of 24. She ran from Boston to San Diego and became the youngest female to ever run across America.

Fitness in the Workplace

Many companies are taking great efforts to ensure that they foster health and fitness in the workplace. Some are thinking of new and innovative ways to support employee exercise and overall well-being. Sitting at your desk for eight hours a day isn't exactly the best for your health.

A recent study by the University of South Carolina looked at the effects of sitting all day. Those who sat all day were much more likely to die of heart disease. NPR wrote a great article on the study.

Epidemiologist Steven Blair, a professor of public health at the University of South Carolina, has spent 40 years investigating physical activity and health.

"Let's say you do 30 minutes of walking five days a week (as recommended by federal health officials), and let's say you sleep for eight hours," Blair says. "Well, that still leaves 15.5 hours" in the day.

So if we know all of this about the risk factors of sitting all day and the health benefits of exercise, what is being done? Many businesses are taking health and fitness to work. This week we interviewed Gus Isacson, Executive Director of the Central Lakeview Merchants Association. He is taking health and fitness into the workplace by conducting board meetings on the run. That's right, board meetings on the run!

Racing can be exciting, especially if you are being cheered on by your relay team the entire time. The Ragnar Relays are 12 person, 200 mile running relay races. It typically takes about 30 hours to complete the race. Each team breaks up the mileage, averaging about 15 miles each.

It's podcast Friday! This week we interviewed Janet Oberholtzer. She has a very inspiring story. In 2004, she was involved in a near-fatal car crash, involving a semi truck. Her legs were pinned during the accident, and she nearly lost them, and her life.

Even though Janet's left leg was almost amputated, she worked through her recovery and was able to walk again. Miraculously, the dedication she had to her recovery allowed her to run four years later.

What is Joggling?

Joggling combines running and juggling. Joggling requires the competitor to juggle at least 3 balls while running. The rules require that a juggling pattern must be maintained whilst running, and if an object is dropped, the joggler must return to the point where the object fell and continue from there.

Have you ever wondered what it was like to run...naked?

Well, The Naked Runners have! They started a movement hoping to get people to ditch the distractions, and get out there to run! I'm sure many of you can relate to always needing to carry an iPod or mp3 player on your runs. Maybe you can't go out for a run without a Garmin on your wrist, or always feel the need to wear shoes. This is the case for many runners today. I was enlightened talking to The Naked Runners about the freedom that can come from running naked!
