The web has opened doors like no other to understanding any number of things of interest and health and fitness maybe one of the most published. It does require a little time to sort through all the sources of information and a good working computer helps. What I have found on the subject of Health and Fitness varies in a wide degree, almost everyone has an opinion on the subject. Because of these wide ranging opinions weight loss and fitness requires a person to customized the solution. Health and fitness comes in all sizes just like shoes and shoes. While the basis things stand out like exercise, good nutrition, building muscle, burning fat, looking and feeling better all play into the picture but the combination of solutions and approaches on how you achieve these seem endless. However, it is a proven fact that engaging in the right program including these elements and building a consistent routine that you execute with precision or at least on a regular basis with accountability and commitment will help you get there.

There is no one sizes fits all solutions when it comes to the right health and fitness strategy. How many time have you experienced a new diet or weight loss craze that seem to work for someone else but resulted in no viable results for you. The worst thing I believe you can do is "nothing" even a little exercise is a better approach than nothing at all. It may require you to look beyond the top ten list but maybe that is a place to start. The magic is figuring out what works for you and start slow and build to the required level to achieve your desired results. These are difficult times for finding the right solution for almost anything because we have reached a place of information overload. The tendency is just to keep trying everything under the sun until you find something that works for you. However, that can be very expensive on the mind, body and spirit and at some point you may just give up and not try anything at all. my belief is that learning from the experience of others can be a very valuable lesson but is only the beginning of the search. It is crucial to determine to the best you can is it something that will also work for you. Sometime all it takes is to understand the top three things that got them results and determine if you could commit to those to achieve your goals. For example if one of those three things that proved successful for them was running a 26 mile marathon then maybe it might not work for you. I realize that is an extreme but I believe you follow where I'm going with what is the custom fit for you?

Yes since Christmas when we ran across a Wii board the family has discovered a whole new way to have fun competing, and at the same time improving our overall fitness. The Wii fit is a software package that has integrated health, fitness and family fun. Wii has already gained a reputation for getting the family off the couch and moving, and with Wii fit it has taken that fitness focus to a whole new level. The Wii fit not only gets you off the couch it gets you moving in ways that if used on a regular basis will improve your overall health and fitness. When it arrived Christmas morning it was an instant hit and the kids more or less push everything else aside and immediately started programming it for fun. We each have our own Avatar (personal image) that actually has many of our features. The game allows you to select and design an avatar that represents you in the game. There are a whole suite of games each providing a challenge in balance, speed, accuracy, focus and humility yes many of the games suggest you humble yourself and accept the feedback. I know personal speaking when the game weighted me in as overweight and proceeded to adjust the size of my avatar to match I had to smile as my family laughed. When you consider I was the only one in the family that was told by the game I was overweight. Hey I can take and with my family I didn’t have much of a choice. As I mentioned since Christmas we have tried most of the games and found each to be fun and challenging in its own right. The game does a great job of tracking your progress each time you log on to play, it provides a Wii age test which can be encouraging or downright pushy in getting you to work on your fitness as it applies to balance, weight, focus and ability to learn by doing. It not only tracks your progress but helps you to set a weight loss goal and provides update each time you log on with Wii fit age, weight and BMI. It is great fun and it does help you get fit! Each game has been designed to simulate a sport or activity that requires you to work on your fitness in a number of areas that contribute to better focus, balance, memory, agility and body control. If you already have a Wii console the cost of the board is about $100.00 and the Wii fit game less than $5.00 if you find it at a pre-owned game store. The return on your financial investment in health, fitness and in general family fun is priceless. It also works for parties and get together with friends by allowing you to create a guest avatar and let the fun and competition begin. So next time you say no more video games for the kids you might want to reconsider if the Wii fit is on the list, you may end up being pleasantly surprise with you Wii age and the family fun you have as a result of being it home!
It has a lot to do with how much of a coffee drinker you are and the quality of the coffee you chose to drink. There are some important tips to having a consistently good cup of coffee every morning, and why not get your day off to the best start possible? There has also been studies by a wide breathe of researcher to determine if coffee is good or bad for you. It may depend on the studies you chose to read and accept. However, there seems to be a consistent message that confirms the pro’s do out weigh the con’s. But what are the pro’s and con’s we will get to that real soon. However, let’s talk a bit more about how you improve the start of everyday with a great cup of coffee. First things first, coffee does have a shelf life and the best properties of a good cup of coffee can be loss if the coffee is not fresh. This usually means the freshest coffee beans you can find, stored and brewed to assure the coffee yields the best result each and every-time. While coffee sold in bulk may seem like a great money saver be careful because the trade off in a number of cases will be that great tasting cup of coffee you crave. You always want to purchase fresh coffee that has been packaged and sold in sturdy, vacuum- sealed bags
Exposure to the air is one of coffee’s worst enemy’s and ultimately yours, so always store it is airtight containers. You might consider the refrigerator as a good source to preserve your coffee but not if you don’t want it to taste like everything you might have in the fringe because like arm and hammer it will absorb moisture and food odors…not a good idea.
Looking for a great cup of coffee than you should focus on a 100% pure Arabica bean coffee that will in most cases state the country and origin. While many subscribe to a commercial brand which in itself is not a bad coffee but there are factors you must consider when you make that choice, what is done to create volume, and the age of the grinded coffee bean plays a part in the quality and taste of the coffee.
The grinding of a coffee bean has an immediate impact on the quality going forward. The sooner you brew the coffee after it is grinded the better the taste of your coffee. Most stores provide coffee in grinded and whole bean so you have a choice. They usually have a grinder in the store so you can do it yourself. There are also inexpensive blade grinders on the market that will do a decent job of getting it done.
After making the right coffee choice and grinding the coffee as fine as your brewer will allow the next major attribute is using good water to get a great tasting coffee. The use of filter water or bottled spring water is essential to the overall experience. In addition to filtered water the filters you use are also important since the coffee will be filtered by whatever you buy and cheaper filters tend yield a less than good tasting coffee. You want to look for a oxygen-bleached or dioxin-free paper filter or if your brewer will accommodate go for a gold-plated re-useable filter. Use the suggested amount of coffee to get the best from your brewer a standard rule of thumb being about 2 level tablespoons for a 6 oz cup of coffee and add another ¾ tablespoon for a 8 oz cup. The proper brewing temperature for coffee is about 200 F which is a below boil temperature of 212 F. Most brewer are set up this way to provide the correct temperature for a consistent cup of coffee so not an area you have to be overly concerned about. However, reheated, day old and overcooked coffee will not yield a good tasting coffee even with the best coffee.
Be sure to keep your coffee containers and grinders clean of oily build up with the recommended cleaner and a strong solution of vinegar is a good way to do it.
The great debate continues on weather coffee is good for you or not a good question considering given the world wide consumption of coffee is on an upward trend. If you check out the most recent news in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry that suggest coffee studies would indicate it lower cholesterol, risk of type 2 Diabetes and heart disease.
While I don’t want to appear to be a medical expert on the subject I do want to bring these possibilities to your attention and suggest you do your own research on the subject. Why because these studies depend on a number of factors that may or may not apply to you. The other interesting note is that after all the studies to date there is still not a clear understanding of why these benefits occur. The fact that coffee is high in antioxidant is believed to play a part into the positive results. While there are positive attributes the down side of drinking coffee tend to be related to the caffeine content of coffee which in itself tends to be higher in non-Arabica bean coffees. Excessive caffeine has been linked to increased irritability, headaches and insomnia. So while the studies may not be totally conclusive on the ability of coffee to prevent certain illnesses the news tends to be more good than bad across the board. So as they say in moderation, one or two cups a day could help keep the doctor away which is a good thing if you are a coffee drinker.

Hurt My Back - But I'm Fine Now

Wow...that was a scare about three weeks ago when I woke up and could hardly move without feeling a sharp pain in my lower back. All I could think about is the past year working as a retail book representative doing very physical work and never once hurting my back because I was extra careful. I was rolling book carts weighting 400-700 pounds and never once hurt myself. What happens was I purchased a generator form home depot to re-store our electricity turned off by our utility company...why just because they could. Yes that is right, they decided after a two year dispute over our rental property in <place w:st="on"><city w:st="on">Rockford</city></place> they would just move the disputed amount to our personal resident and shut off our lights, for what turned out to be three days. The long story short on this was the electric meter they were supposedly reading and charging us for on a continuous basis wasn't even functioning, as was confirmed by one of their field technicians. After being notified that the meter was not working they were going to do us a favor and give us a credit for the amount but needless to say we said. don’t think so and very soon a check was in the mail. All this has nothing to do with my fear of really doing serious damage lifting that heavy generator the wrong way. I don't ever remembering hurting my back that bad before and I seriously hope I never do it again. It happen about three years ago I almost hurt my back while moving the book racks up a 45 degree angle into the back of a truck. Instead of asking for help I decided I could do it and found my self midway up the ramp attending to push the rack with my lower back and not my legs as you are suppose to do. I did not have a back support or anything of that nature so it could have turned out really bad but I truly believe that was a message to me to be a lot more careful in the future if I was going to do mobile book fairs for a living.

What does that mean well consider for a minute the many sources of water we have today. Yes here we are with hundreds of choices of a basic thing we all require and need. The list of sources continue to grow as we re-name and re-market what use to primary come out of the tap, a well, a stream, a river or a fountain. The types of water are so varied now that when you ask for water you need to be very specific. Why is this important? Well think about the choices you make everyday about the water you drink be it distilled, tap, bottled, favored, filtered, unfiltered, cold, warm, with ice or without and this is just the water you drink what about the water you cook with? The choices vary based on the individual based on everything from taste, to fear, to status, to availability and the list goes on. However, the basic truth is the same we all need and do drink water and if that is the case it might be wise to investigate a bit further into some of the assumptions we make about what we put in our body. It may not be an easy assessment to make because some of the assumptions we make are not based in facts. Example most would assume bottled water was better for you than say tap water. However this is truly not the case in all situations because some bottled water is unfiltered tap water...yes that’s right! The convenience of picking up a bottle of water has gone beyond what might have been the original motivation of providing a better drinking water source by processing it and bottling it for general consumption. It has gone far beyond that in that the water bottling industry if you go back to 2007 was expected to reach approximately 6 Billon dollars and globally predicted to be about $82 billion in 2011.

Know your body its good for you.

The annual physical I remember the most is a routine check-up I scheduled with a local doctor. The doctor reminded me of what the old family doctor of days gone by might have been like in his approach to health and wellness. He began by taking a little time to get to know me as a person with regards to my health as I perceived it to be at that time. After a brief discussion on his approach he proceeded to evaluate as he defined the five major areas of determining a person physical well being. He broke it out to my senses (ear, eyes, mouth, touch and smell) digestive system, heart and circulation, skin and brain/reflects. He took each area one by one starting with a brief explanation of what he was about to do and why. H e provided insight as he did the procedure on how each of the specific areas measured up with regards to wellness. I thought this a unique approach and appreciated someone taking the time to explain it to the level of detailed I experienced during this physical examination. However, the thing that stuck with me the most was a statement he made about people in general and their health and wellness. He said it matter of fact that our bodies are designed with internal monitors and alarms that provide ongoing updates to our health and well being and if we paid more attention to them our lives would be healthy in general. He provided examples like headaches, digestive problems, sleep issue and the list goes on of changes in our normal health pattern that is not addressed until it manifest itself into an unbearable condition .

Healthcare Reform and the Elderly

President Barack Obama signed the final Health Care and Education Affordability Reconciliation Act of 2010 in March of this year. This health care reform bill includes changes that will close the Medicare prescription drug plan's "doughnut hole" coverage gap.The following table shows the Medicare benefit breakdown (including the donut hole) for 2009, for 2010 the total TrOOP has increased to $4,550 before catastrophic coverage begins."Total drug spend" represents the actual cost of the drugs purchased, factoring in any Medicare discounts."TrOOP" (true out-of-pocket expenses) represents the amount of their own money that the patient has paid.

"The passage of this final legislation will add to the many benefits that healthcare reform offers older adults," said AGS President Cheryl Phillips, MD. "All told, healthcare reform includes numerous, important provisions that will improve elder healthcare now and in the future and support geriatrics careers. The AGS has long advocated for these provisions."

The Six Public Policy Advocacy Objectives of the AGS (American Geriatrics Society)

* Address the acute and growing nationwide shortage of geriatricians and all geriatrics healthcare
professionals; and ensure that other healthcare providers have training that prepares them to meet the unique healthcare needs of older people
* Strengthen primary and and preventive care and care coordination
* Effect healthcare financing reform to ensures all older adults access to high quality healthcare
* Ensure that value-based purchasing and other quality initiatives take into account the unique healthcare needs of all older patients
* Step-up research concerning healthly aging, the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of age related health problems, and the cost effectiveness of various approaches to care; and ensure that older adults are adequately represented in research trails
* Expands older adults healthcare options to include home care and other care that enables them to live independently as long as possible, help older adults and their caregivers better understand their healthcare needs and make the most of Medicare and other benefits; and provide caregivers with adequate resources and support.

What are some of the specific benefits for the elderly in this reform bill:
- Reform Medicare payment policy so it more equitably reimburses those who care for older adults
- Offer geriatricians and other primary care providers a 10% Medicare bonus payment
- Initiate a periodic review of physicians' services that are potentially misvalued
- Create a physician "value-based payment program" aimed at improving the quality of care beneficiaries receive
- Establish an "Innovation Center" to test new payment and care delivery approaches aimed at further enhancing the quality of eldercare and improving cost-effectiveness
- Calls on the Department of Health and Human Services to develop a national strategy for improving
the quality of care provided through Medicare and other programs
- Expand geriatrics training programs, including advanced training programs that prepare specialists to
meet the needs of the most complex, frailest older patients
- Establish eldercare training programs for the direct-care workers and family caregivers who provide
day-to-day care
- Provisions in the legislation will improve seniors' health by eliminating Medicare beneficiaries' co-pays
and deductibles for preventive care
-Establishing new programs to lower hospital readmission rates among Medicare patients
This is clearly a huge step in the right direction to improving the overall healthcare of the elderly and addresses many long term concerns of each of us who directly benefit from this or who have family and friends that do.

Walk Don't Run

Well which one has better health benefits?
If you are thinking running; then, you may want to think again? Running has health benefits but...when you are just starting out you can go longer and farther with walking. Walking is fuel efficient, you barely need any energy to do it. Just get up..walk to bathroom..walk to car..go to work..walk inside..leave..walk to bathroom..walk to bed and loss about....1,000 calories. Now isn't that nice?

Hmm, which is safer?

Which would you rather do? Run or Walk? Most physical fitness experts would lean toward walking especially if you are just starting out and have little experience at either. Why walking; one, you are not putting 3x your body weight on your feet when you walk; and secondly, running can damage your feet, ankles and knees. Allow this to happen and you won't be able to run AT ALL which would kind of defeat the whole purpose! The other major concern would be your overall fitness to excerpt this much energy which could ultimately put undue stress on your heart and lungs. The intent of an exercise program should be to find something you can start out slow and build up to a fun routine that helps you improve your health. This not to stay after a period of time you may want to build up to running for pleasure and fitness but as in any exercise routine in moderation while making sure it is improving your health not putting you at risk for damage to your joint of even worst a heart incident. Raise you hand if you want a heart attack!! Any takers? Anyone? But seriously everyone wants to be healthily and obtain or maintain a healthy weight but who wants to do it the dangerous way?

Like wearing normal clothes when you do things?

Again walking sounds like the right choice. Let me tell you, if you aren't in favor of changing clothes just so you can exercise then consider this. With walking you can wear whatever you are in and a pair of comfy tennis shoes. That's all the changing you need to do!

Want to lose weight? Quickly?

Running or walking in itself will not get you there alone. You need to select the one you can easily get into a dailiy routine and complement with good eating habits and proper rest. It takes a well rounded program to insure you sit to it because if you want real and safe results any exercise program is going to take commitment and time. Walking is a natural thing to do but many of us avoid it when ever we can not walking to the store, to school, or to a friend's house That's exercise and over time you will feel and see the result! Depending on where you are at the start of the program will determine how quickly youy see results in some cases it maybe weeks or months allowing you to fit into your prom dress or suit tah was a bit to tight. Walking could be the best answer and one you can stick to and ultimately that is the magic if you want to feel and look better.

Want to make it a hobby? One you can hangout with your friends?

Now this choice is entirely up to you...running or walking? The choice of walking for someone just starting out is a pretty easy decision for them, and that person they want to join them. It is a bit more difficult to really have a conversation when you are running because you have to breath with every step. The secret to walking is that it is no hassle in this area when it comes to having a nice stroll and conversation with a partner! You can more easily find people who want to walk with you, and there you have it, a hobby where you can talk to your friends while on your road to feeling and looking better!
