'How can an X chromosome be nearly as big as the head of the sperm cell?

No, this isn't a mistake. First, there's less DNA in a sperm cell than there is in a non-reproductive cell such as a skin cell. Second, the DNA in a sperm cell is super-condensed and compacted into a highly dense form. Third, the head of a sperm cell is almost all nucleus. Most of the cytoplasm has been squeezed out in order to make the sperm an efficient torpedo-like swimming machine.

The X chromosome is shown here in a condensed state, as it would appear in a cell that's going through mitosis. It has also been duplicated, so there are actually two identical copies stuck together at their middles. A human sperm cell contains just one copy each of 23 chromosomes.

A chromosome is made up of genetic material (one long piece of DNA) wrapped around structural support proteins (histones). Histones organize the DNA and keep it from getting tangled, much like thread wrapped around a spool. But they also add a lot of bulk. In a sperm cell, a specialized set of tiny support proteins (protamines) pack the DNA down to about one-sixth the volume of a mitotic chromosome.'

'The Genetic Science Learning Center is a science and health education program located in the midst of the bioscience research being carried out at the University of Utah. Our mission is making science easy for everyone to understand.'

'If you're the kind of fan that loves to dig into the history and process of film and television production - we're talking to you, Google-Map-wielding LOST fans - you'll love Famous Locations, an index of where your favorite stuff was filmed.

You can search the Famous Locations site by ZIP code, city, or region as well as by the movie title, TV title, or actor names. If you're feeling curious without a set searching goal in mind, you can simply hit the main map and poke around for locations that catch your eye.

In our testing, there were two fun ways to use the search feature. You could search for a favorite movie and see all the locations used for that movie. Just as interesting - perhaps more so - is to pick a location that you particularly liked from a movie or television show and see just how many times it had been used as a filming location. Places like the Empire State Building and various areas around the Harvard campus have gotten quite a bit of screen time over the years, it turns out, and might make for interesting drop-bys on a vacation.'

'The site is wacky but brilliant. It lets you register any object with a unique code, which is printed out on a small sticker that you place on the object. The object can be anything from your wallet or iPhone to a beloved frying pan. Ostensibly, the purpose of doing this is that if you should ever lose the object, anyone who finds it can contact you through SendMeHome. By entering the code on the sticker, they can learn anything you've decided to share about yourself or the object, and can contact you anonymously.

The lost-and-found feature is the only practical reason you would use the service. But once you've attached a sticker to a favorite object and registered it on the site, there are other things you can do with it. You can tell a story about the object, pass it around, or put it on a mission.'

http://www.sendmehome.com/

http://www.cinematek.be

Sexy new site for the always impeccable The Word magazine - congratulation, guys.

'Launched in January 2008, The Word is a luxury and lifestyle bimestrial publication. A fresh and heavy-hitting take on neighbourhood life and global style, its purpose is to present a different facet to our beloved little country Belgium, one which goes beyond chocolate, beer and the Manneken Pis whilst also reporting back on some of the most exciting global goings-on in the world of design, style and ideas.

The magazine caters to an Internationalite and Urbanite audience: internationals living in Belgium, or Belgians with an international itch.

Industry profiles, fashion series, design features, travel guides, neighbourhood institutions, consumerist selections, visual essays and artistic 'carte blanches'. Crafted by a tight-knit group of writers, photographers, illustrators and designers, The Word is the missing link in today's bland and over-saturated media landscape.'

Legally, we are prohibited from making exaggerated claims about the potency of the nutrients in this bottle. Therefore, legally we wouldn't tell you that after drinking this, Eugene from Kansas started using horseshoes as a thighmaster or that this drink gave Agnes from Delaware enough strength to bench press llamas. Heck, we can't even tell you this drink gives you the power to do a thousand pinkie pushups - just ask mike in queens.

Legally, we can't say stuff like that - 'cause that would be wrong, you know?

'We often think of scientific ideas, such as Darwin's theory of evolution, as fixed notions that are accepted as finished. In fact, Darwin's On the Origin of Species evolved over the course of several editions he wrote, edited, and updated during his lifetime. The first English edition was approximately 150,000 words and the sixth is a much larger 190,000 words. In the changes are refinements and shifts in ideas - whether increasing the weight of a statement, adding details, or even a change in the idea itself. The second edition, for instance, adds a notable by the Creator to the closing paragraph, giving greater attribution to a higher power. In another example, the phrase 'Survival of the fittest'- usually considered central to the theory and often attributed to Darwin - instead came from British philosopher Herbert Spencer, and didn't appear until the fifth edition of the text.'

http://benfry.com/traces/

'Rankin first came to prominence in the mid-nineties, when he co-founded the cult magazine 'Dazed & Confused', with Jefferson Hack. He quickly established himself as a formidable force in photography and rose to fame shooting his Brit-scene contemporaries such as Pulp and Blur, moving on to photograph a veritable spectrum of names, from Tony Blair to Madonna, the Queen to Kylie, Kate Moss to Helen Mirren, amongst others. He earned a reputation, both within and without the industry, for creative portraiture and a unique talent for capturing the character and spirit of his subjects. His images break through the facade of his subjects' public persona, and seek to explore that intriguing inner space that we all keep hidden in our daily lives.'

http://www.dragone.dcod.me/

[source:JoWM]

Trendalyzer, le fabuleux outil de visualisation statistique de Hans Rosling (on vous recommande chaudement les présentations qu'il en a fait à TED - à voir sur YouTube ou sur TED.com), après avoir été acheté par Google, est disponible sur le web pour le grand public: 'Unveiling the beauty of statistics for a fact based world view.'

Alors, à quoi ça sert?

'Gapminder's work serves a purpose of filling a gap. There has been a market failure in distributing global data. A lot of people are interested in the data, but don't get access to it (and if they manage to access the data, they need to be advanced skilled statisticians to analyze it). Gapminder wants to make data more accessible and easier to use for instant visual analysis. We believe decision makers, politicians as well as education at almost all levels lack adequate tools.

There is no political agenda behind the work. The idea is that all people, independently of their political agenda, should get free access to already existing statistics about global development to easily improve their understanding about the complex society.'

http://graphs.gapminder.org/world/

'Take a geo-location system, add an Internet directory of hiding spots, and voila! A 21st century treasure hunt! One T-shirt slogan calls it 'using multi-billion dollar military hardware to find Tupperware in the woods.' Geocaching began in 2000 when an Oregonian stashed a container in the woods, posted its latitude and longitude on the Internet, and other GPS users went out and found it. Now there are nearly 900,000 geocaches hidden worldwide, and hundreds of thousands of cachers, ranging from the curious to fanatics. The hobby is a fun additional activity for those roaming the outdoors on foot, bike, 4-wheeler or horse. There are at least as many urban caches as park hides, so it's also become a hidden virtual layer to the cityscape, unsuspected by passing muggles who are not into the game. And it's a great family activity - kids love 'treasure hunting' and trading for the toys and trinkets found in many caches. Geocaching is also an open game, extendable (within limits) by its players to add things like gnarly logic puzzles that must be solved to reveal a cache location, or objects whose worldwide movements among caches are tracked online.'

http://www.geocaching.com/

When you have the right ideas, the right attitude and the right determination, you can build a world wide brand with just a pair of undies and a voice that, well, you've heard it. Or as I like to say, I'm the epitome of effort in the absence of talent. But knowing how to do more with less is a talent, and I'm going to bring that talent to New York City like you've never seen. And not a moment too soon. There's never been a better time to cut wasteful spending and get this city back on track - and I'm just the cowboy to do it.'

http://www.nakedcowboyformayor.com

[source:JulienWM]

Essentially, this site is what I'd have been doing when I was 12 years old had the Internet and Photoshop been available to me in the eighties. As well as the infographics there are a few other bits and bobs; like small pixiliated portraits of some baseball players. They are filleted from a bigger collection of Minipops (that's what I call them) which is one of the biggest parts of my main web site, Flip Flop Flyin' (thus the name of this site). There's also some photos from some of the stadiums I've visited, and a few drawings.

'To become a Falcon, the essence of these classic bikes will be distilled and filtered through the Falcon aesthetic. Sure, you will know it´s a Norton immediately, but there´s something unfamiliar. You recognize it, but you´ve never seen it before. Like digging through a dusty chest in your attic and finding a never-before-seen photo of your mom when she was young. Or, as if it were a Norton from an alternate dimension, taken in an entirely new direction.

All bikes will be salvaged - forgotten skeletons left to rust, derelict engines and far-thrown parts will be reconstructed and fully resurrected. Absolutely no functioning bike will ever be dismembered (that would hurt us more than it).

'You have the power to make a difference.

Intel's goal is not only to make higher performing processors but also to help create a better tomorrow. Working in association with BOINC and GridRepublic volunteer computing, Intel's Progress Thru Processors allows people to share a portion of their processor's idle computer power and apply it toward life-changing research. With your help, scientists can expand their research and bring us one step closer to finding a cure for cancer, controlling the spread of malaria and combating global warming.

By sharing your processor's spare computing power, you can potentially help save lives and make tomorrow better for everyone.'

http://www.facebook.com/progressthruprocessors

'While the shuttle Endeavour is having a tough time getting off of the launch pad, the Apollo 11 moon mission should proceed as scheduled later this week. Some 40 years after Neil Armstrong and a host of behind-the-scenes workers at NASA made JFK's vision a reality, WeChooseTheMoon.org is being launched to recreate the whole spectacle. Starting a full 90 minutes prior to the 40th anniversary (that's 8:02AM on July 16th), the site will be fully operational, tracking the capsule's route from Earth to the moon. Reportedly, visitors will be able to peek 'animated recreations of key events from the four-day mission, including when Apollo 11 first orbits the moon and when the lunar module separates from the command module.'

http://www.wechoosethemoon.org/

[source:TocheWM+Brani]

Codex Sinaiticus is one of the most important books in the world. Handwritten well over 1600 years ago, the manuscript contains the Christian Bible in Greek, including the oldest complete copy of the New Testament. Its heavily corrected text is of outstanding importance for the history of the Bible and the manuscript - the oldest substantial book to survive Antiquity - is of supreme importance for the history of the book.

The Codex Sinaiticus Project is an international collaboration to reunite the entire manuscript in digital form and make it accessible to a global audience for the first time. Drawing on the expertise of leading scholars, conservators and curators, the Project gives everyone the opportunity to connect directly with this famous manuscript.

http://www.codex-sinaiticus.net

'It has been pointed out that this is just about the perfect photograph for capturing the moment. It's obvious from the drop shadow that the machine is off the ground. This photograph was taken to document the world's first heavier-than-air powered flight, and it just perfectly does so.

Shortly after the fourth and longest flight of the day, they took a break and the machine was picked up by the wind, flipped over, and destroyed. So they just packed it up into crates and went back to Dayton. This was close to Christmas. The glass plate from the camera was in one of their shipping crates. It was probably three or four months before they processed that plate - in a shed behind their house. They didn't know if they had a photograph that proved their achievement until several months after the flight.'

http://pro.corbisimages.com/Creative/storied

[source:Elise]

The purpose of Alltop is to help you answer the question, 'What's happening?' in 'all the topics' that interest you. You may wonder how Alltop is different from a search engine. A search engine is good to answer a question like, 'How many people live in China?' However, it has a much harder time answering the question, 'What's happening in China?' That's the kind of question that we answer.

We do this by collecting the headlines of the latest stories from the best sites and blogs that cover a topic. We group these collections - 'aggregations' - into individual web pages. Then we display the five most recent headlines of the information sources as well as their first paragraph.

You can think of Alltop as the 'online magazine rack' of the web. We've subscribed to thousands of sources to provide 'aggregation without aggravation.' To be clear, Alltop pages are starting points - they are not destinations per se. Ultimately, our goal is to enhance your online reading by displaying stories from sources that you're already visiting plus helping you discover sources that you didn't know existed.

[...]

Alltop is 'two guys and a gal' in a garage - or more accurately, one guy in home office (Will Mayall), one gal on a kitchen table (Kathryn Henkens), and one Guy in United 2B (Guy Kawasaki). They've been working together since the previous century and are still friends.

http://alltop.com/

How is Mailinator different than some other web email, like Yahoo or Hotmail?

--

Mailinator is fundamentally quite different from other services. Other services like Gmail or Yahoo allow you to actually send email. You cannot send email from Mailinator. After a few hours, all email is auto-deleted. A Mailinator email inbox can be read by anyone. There is no real security here. The upside is that Mailinator requires no sign-up. Send email to a name, and the account is created automagically.

So Mailinator solves the Spam problem?

--

Heck no. If it solved the spam problem it would probably be called IBMinator or MICROSOFTinator or something even catchier cuz we would have sold it and we'd be zillionaires off pursuing our real dream of helping nice people like Dr. Bahutu of Nigeria who keeps emailing us asking for our help transferring some funds.

http://www.mailinator.com

[source:Tanguynator]

'Google Squared is an experimental search tool that collects facts from the web and presents them in an organized collection, similar to a spreadsheet. If you search for [roller coasters], Google Squared builds a square with rows for each of several specific roller coasters and columns for corresponding facts, such as image, height and maximum speed.

While gathering facts from across the Internet is relatively easy (albeit tedious) for humans to do, it's far more difficult for computers to do automatically. Google Squared is a first step towards solving that challenge. It essentially searches the web to find the types of facts you might be interested in, extracts them and presents them in a meaningful way.'

http://www.google.com/squared

'Choose lobster. Choose rosemary garlic polenta cake. Choose gyoza, ramen, salmon roe, salmon, sashimi, sushi, 'pseu-shi.' Choose pizza. Choose pasta, pasta with pesto, pasta with peas. Choose ravioli. Choose coffee. Choose tea. Choose tea eggs. Choose Bacon Ranch Fries. Choose cupcake, cheesecake, cake, pie, pi, tart, cookies ... But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life. I chose somethin' else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when you've got TasteSpotting?'

Founded on the idea that we eat first with our eyes, TasteSpotting is our obsessive, compulsive collection of eye-catching images that link to something deliciously interesting on the other side. Think of TasteSpotting as a highly visual potluck of recipes, references, experiences, stories, articles, products, and anything else that inspires exquisite taste.

We don't use the term 'potluck' for the hell of it. Everyone brings something to the party here: the user community submits images/links from around the web and the editorial team reviews the submissions. What finally gets served up on the site is a beautifully refined set of the community's contributions.

http://www.tastespotting.com/

[source:KoenWM]

'In 2001 citizens were encouraged to take to the malls to boost the U.S. economy through shopping, thereby equating consumerism with patriotism. The Copia project, a direct response to that advice, is a long-term photographic examination of the peculiarities and complexities of the consumer-dominated culture in which we live. Through large scale photographs taken within both the big-box retail stores and the thrift shops that house our recycled goods, Copia explores not only the everyday activities of shopping, but the economic, cultural, social, and political implications of commercialism and the roles we play in self-destruction, over-consumption, and as targets of marketing and advertising. By scrutinizing these rituals and their environments, I hope that viewers will evaluate the increasing complexities of the modern world and their own role within it.'

http://www.notifbutwhen.com

http://sophiebrouhon.be/

http://laurent.collectif.be/

On se la joue Derrick:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v==2j_0ucJud6o&feature==related

On décroit à vue d'oeil:

http://www.velorution.be/

On se jette à l'eau:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v==cOiXCQQ_MwI

On pédale vers le scrutin:

http://www.votezvelo.org

On se raconte de bien belles histoires:

http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid==97759354080&ref==share

On se colle sur les murs:

http://www.7juin.be/

http://www.pstv.be/permalink/9253/le-spot-de-campagne-du-ps-.aspx

http://www.leooo.be

'Let's be honest we've all got them. At some point in our lives, someone close to us has made us pose for an uncomfortable photo. Well, here's your chance to share your family's awkwardness with the world.'

'Lens is the photojournalism blog of The New York Times, presenting the finest and most interesting visual and multimedia reporting - photographs, videos and slide shows. A showcase for Times photographers, it also seeks to highlight the best work of other newspapers, magazines and news and picture agencies; in print, in books, in galleries, in museums and on the Web. And it will draw on The Times's own pictorial archive, numbering in the millions of images and going back to the early 20th century.'

http://lens.blogs.nytimes.com/

[source:BriceCool]

'Since its inception in 2005, Emmy award-winning Current TV has been the world's leading peer-to-peer news and information network. Current is the only 24/7 cable and satellite television network and Internet site produced and programmed in collaboration with its audience. Current connects young adults with what is going on in their world, from their perspective, in their own voices.

Current pioneered the television industry's leading model of interactive viewer created content (VC2). Comprising roughly one-third of Current's on-air broadcast, this content is submitted via short-form, non-fiction video 'pods'. Viewer Created Ad Messages (VCAMs) are also open to viewers participation.

Current's programming ranges from daily pop culture coverage to political satire in 'SuperNews,' unprecedented music journalism in 'The Current Fix,' and unique insights into global stories through Vanguard and Citizen Journalism.

Current.com is the first fully integrated web and TV platform where users can participate in shaping an ongoing stream of news and information that is compelling, authentic and relevant to them.'

http://current.com/

[source:FredWM]
