Walking after 2pm is difficult and the storms start around 3pm. By storms I mean BIG STORMS - thunder, lightening and heavy rain. Not the ideal weather for camping!

Anyway. We came back over to the south side of the Pyrenees and had a couple of days up in the Aiguestortes (´Twisted Waters´) National Park staying in the Refugi Amitges (a really good Pyrenean mountain refuge) surrounded by glacial lakes - some of which are still frozen - snow capped peaks, rocks and waterfalls.

Here is a photo to give you some idea of how beautiful this place is and makes all the hard work, bad weather and early mornings worthwhile! Fantastic place, good food and HOT SHOWERS. As it is quite a popular tourist site they even had BRIDGES over the rivers which is a bit of a novelty for us having dry boots. Luxury. As the mid day temperatures are hitting 30 degrees C the snow is melting fast (high river levels).

Our friends Manel and Maria came up for the weekend from Barcelona and have kindly returned with about a third of the baggage we were carrying that we did not need. Therefore we are having a bit of a break in Viehla.

However, the views are spectacular and the spring flowers amazing. Today is the first day since Elisondo that we have had access to the internet, so we can update you on our progress.

After three weeks on the path we finally have a very warm, sunny day! We have been up in the high mountains (up to about 2,500m) and there is still a lot of snow around and the weather has been very changable (with more than enough rain). We made it through the Ordessa canyon and up to the Goriz refugio overnight and then accross to the Collado de Anisclo. However, despite traversing quite a few tricky snowfields, fording rivers, climbing a few crags and getting hit by a heavy hail shower, we could not get past a large snow cornice on the top of the pass - so we retracked our steps and headed down the Anisclo canyon. The canyon is absolutely amazing - waterfalls and rapids and a very precipitous track along the cliff edge! This went on for quite a while and involved hanging on to steel chains above long, long drops to the river below. This was the easy part... then we had to climb over a few rock falls, damaged bridges, ford more streams that didnt have bridges (you get the idea). By this time it was getting dark and we were still in the canyon - we didnt fancy walking along precipitous cliffs with rockfalls in the dark so we set up camp on the only piece of flat ground between some large boulders and cooked some pasta and went to sleep. We were so wet, exhausted and tired that we all slept in the same tent to keep warm. Pictures will be posted asap!

The next day we were up early (as camping is not allowed in the National Park) and set off walking again... more canyons, landslides, waterfalls, water, mud, rocks etc, etc. for a few more kms until we reached Puyarruego - a lovely small hill top village which has a CAMPSITE!!! We quickly made ourselves at home in their outdoor restaurant - drying our boots and eating their menu del dia. We also found that they have BUNGALOWS so we booked ourselves in and did our LAUNDRY and lay down!

Ochagavia

Llamada desde Ochagavia:

Todo va bien. Today we only walked about 16km as yesterday we made it from Elizondo (202m) all the way to Collado de Adatun (1213m.

Saturday we decided to stay for a day in Elizondo (two nights in total)for three reasons:
1. We were absulutely shattered after walking 30km for two days in succession.
2. Elizondro is a really lovely, attractive and friendly place. Very Basque, interesting architecture, good food and laid back. So we found a good place to eat, had a few beers and I did some knitting in the local bar.
3. There was a weather warning not to go out. Good reason to stay put.

Disadvantages? It has rained every day so far, the rivers are high and there have been landslides in the mountains (which means everywhere around here).

Last night (Sunday) we camped at Collade de Atun which I think is the watershed between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean (I may be wrong). It was fun to wild camp for the first night but we were in mist and then rain. We got a camp fire going but I was really damp in my sleeping bag. But today has been great for walking through beech forested valleys and fording streams (no bridges here!)We passed through the Barranoc Odia valley which was amazingly beautiful - ferns, moss, flowers, salamanders and lots of water! Had lunch (with wine) in a little bar where one of their dogs ran off and ate the inner sole of my left hiking boot, which I thought was a bit of a disaster until the lady running the place came out with two new ones. Perhaps her dogs makes a habit of this...
Then more climbing to the top of another hill in glorious sunshine alongside cows (with bells round their necks) looking back over wooded valleys. Looked like a scene out of ´The Hills are Alive with the Sound of Music´, then down again to where we are now. Fortunately have booked into a hostel where we have showered, washed clothes and hit the bar and now waiting for food. Mmm, Spanish food! I love it.

Sábado 31 de mayo. Hola desde Elizondo!

We have made it from the Atlantic coast to a small hill town in Navarra.

Our first day took us 20 miles from Cap de Higuer through Hondarribia (lovely small old Basque town with a a big stone castle, narrow streets with timber balconies brightly coloured and filled with geraniums, by sunbathers on the beach (VERY tempting), along a motorway in blazing sun and in to a town called Irun (not very attractive) and then out the other side in to the mountains. We made it to Vera de Bidasoa on the first night - arriving about 10pm VERY tired.

Day 2 took us from Vera to Elizondo. Another long day in the green hills winding around the valleys. There are numerous concrete bunkers dotted around the hills - Im not sure if these are from the Civil War or the Second World War.

I have never seen countryside with no flat bits. Even the Lake District has some valley bottoms but not Euskadi! It is either UP or DOWN - and very steep. However, it is a very beautiful place - very green, with beech woods, oak trees, ferns, lots of sheep, cows and farmhouses. We have had big showers in the afternoons but sunny mornings and evenings. Plenty of cloud cover too so it has been good for walking.

So now we are in Elizondo, a lovely hill town in Navarra. Here are some photos. We were going to press on today but it rained a lot last night a weather warning has been issued for today. The river in town is high and we decicded to give ourselves a day off to soothe our (very) sore limbs. It will be good to have time to look around town and see the sights. We had a good meal in a restaurant last night watching pelota on the tv. Pelota? It´s the Basque national sport. Bit like squash but with only a front and one side wall. And no racquet!

Sunday evening. This is because:
1. Some people can't access the justgiving.com site from their computers
2. Some people don't like donating online
3. Some people would rather make a donation in person (which is a nice thought)
4. Some people will see me before and after the walk and can just hand the donation over
5. Probably other reasons that I don't know of yet

So if you would rather not donate online I have sponsorship forms that people can fill in with your details and your pledge, or post a cheque to me if you have my address. You can also make a pledge on the 'comments' at the foot of this blog entry.

If you don't have my address send me an email to bykercolin@yahoo.co.uk and I can give you details. It's best to wait until I am back in Newcastle in August before sending it to me.

I will collect the money (cash or cheque) from people who let me know that they want to sponsor me.

Does that cover everything? The link is over on the panel to the right.

But I digress from the Pyrenees. In fact, as you may have seen from the article on BBC/Tyne, I am going to try and find some locally produced wool while I am up in the mountains. The economy of the towns and villages was based on wool, but now they are either deserted or rely on tourism. Tourism, tourism, tourism - but may be I am contributing to this dependency to. Do people actually MAKE things anymore, or do we just want everything imported cheaply. What made me mad the other week was finding some yarn in a shop that had been produced in China, finished in Australia and then found itself on a shelf in Newcastle. What's wrong with local wool? It enters by the Portella de Baiau (2,756 m) from the Vall Ferrera, and goes down by the Negre lake, the refuge of Comapedrosa, where it meets with the GRP1 and go on together until the beginning/end of the Andorran variant, the GR 11-8, where the GR 11 still goes down to Arinsal (1.600 m), from where it goes up again to the col of Les Cases (1,958 m). After it, it goes down again to Arans (1,300 m). After that, it goes up again to the peak of Sorovilles (1,740 m), descends to the Castle of Els Moros (1,450 m), up to the col of Ordino (1,983 m) and down to Encamp (1,250 m). From Encamp, the route goes up to the Engolasters lake (1,600 m) and goes on to Ràmio, where it meets the GR 7. Both routes go on together to Estall Serrer, where they meet the GRP1. The three routes go on by the same way until the refuge and lake of Illa (2,480 m), where the GR 11 separates from the other and still goes up to the pass of Vall Cibera (2,517 m), from where it goes down to the Esparvers cabin, in Catalunya.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDuYjfuAXOTXv3kYCxpx4kh-ltOjR13svQgfsPQ20pTUQfvKCR_B_WNn00OzoCJBeOLZWPP7ZYtgBwBR6rGBB7LbkjZWI2UZd99gOrOagcvX2ompw0AA7c5m2ZGNYk4ipWudqVUgG7aiU/s400/andorrapetit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5203721844946777874" />

Some publicity for St Oswald's Hospice

The story of our epic adventure is going on the BBC/Tyne website to give me some publicity in my fundraising endeavours. Waking up in the mountains and cooking breakfast. In fact Sara and Sandi are much better morning people than me so I hope breakfast may be ready - oh, the smell of bacon and beans in the morning...

Talking of wild camping - the photo is me on High Pike in the Lakes last summer.
