Analysis on highly active stocks for investors...

Shares of Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. (NYSE:LGF) fell 7 percent after the closing bell. The media company reported a net loss of $22.7 million (17 cents per share) for the fourth-quarter, compared to a net gain of $48.7 million (34 cents per share) a year earlier. Revenue increased 71.2 percent to $645.2 million from the year-earlier quarter.

TiVo Inc. (NASDAQ:TIVO) shares dropped 2 percent in late trading as the company reported disappointing results for the first-quarter. TiVo logged a loss of $20.8 million (17 cents per share), compared to a net gain of $139 million ($1.04 per share) a year earlier. Tom Rogers, President and CEO of TiVo, said, “Our first quarter represented a solid start to the year for TiVo with our results in line with our financial outlook and as we continued to execute on our key objectives. Global adoption of TiVo progressed as we grew our subscription base 27% year-over-year, or by 524,000 subscriptions.”

Don’t Miss: Does This Spell BAD NEWS for Pandora?

After falling almost 8 percent during regular market hours, Research in Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) shares edged slightly higher in extended trading. The BlackBerry maker recently announced it hired JPMorgan (NYSE:JPM) and RBC Capital Markets to review the company’s business and financial performance. CEO Thorsten Heins also announced that the company would report a first-quarter operating loss and plans on cutting its work force.

Despite a pullback across the markets on Wednesday, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) shares managed to close 1.2 percent higher and continues to attract interest after the closing bell. The tech giant launched the official iOS app for its 2012 Worldwide Developers Conference, and also posted the full conference schedule on its website. The conference begins on Monday, June 11 with a keynote presentation, as expected. Most Apple enthusiasts know that a keynote presentation usually contains the introduction of some new software, and if they’re lucky, some new hardware as well.

Shares of Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) continue to struggle in public trading. The social-media company traded down to as low as $27.86 on Wednesday, representing new lows since it began trading on the Nasdaq (NASDAQ:QQQ) on May 18. Shares finished the day at $28.19 and continued to edge lower in late trading.

Overseas manufacturing has become the norm for most U.S. electronics companies these days, but Apple chief executive Tim Cook says changing that scenario could eventually be a long-term goal of the company...

Overseas manufacturing has become the norm for most U.S. electronics companies these days, but Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) chief executive Tim Cook says changing that scenario could possibly be a long-term goal of the company. Asked if Apple would ever carry out final assembly of its hot-selling products like the iPhone and the iPad within the country, Cook said he’d definitely want it to be a possibility.

Investing Insights: Active Stock Radar: RIM Shares Regress, BofA and Alcoa Pump Dow Up.

However, Cook said that China and other Asian countries have become the default go-to place for assembling products because the number of American tool-and-die makers has fallen way short. Cook said such skilled workers in America would hardly fill up the auditorium in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, where the interview was being held. In China, such skilled workers would fill several cities, he added.

So, with worker skills in the U.S. disappearing, bringing about a change in the current situation will require new education initiatives that will take time to implement and bear results. In the meantime, component makers that employ Americans are having an impact.

Cook said the microprocessor chips inside the latest Apple mobile devices are made for the company by Samsung in Austin, Texas, and that the Mac’s chips made by Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) are manufactured in several U.S. factories. “The semiconductor industry is fantastic in the United States,” Cook said. Also, the display glass for Apple mobile devices is made by Corning (NYSE:GLW) in Kentucky.

“We will do as many of these as we can do,” Cook said.

Help us put together a comprehensive list for investors...

Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) is not only a great American success story, it’s also a company that attracts some serious black clouds. In the past, these clouds took the form of lawsuits from the Winklevoss brothers and Mark Zuckerberg’s co-founder Eduardo Saverin. However, as the late Biggie Smalls said, “More money, more problems.”

Don’t Miss: Will Facebook Become a LEGENDARY Failure for Investors?

Facebook’s new dark clouds are worrisome for investors. Our CHEAT SHEET investing framework always starts with a requirement for a “C = Catalyst for a Stockʼs Movement“. In the case of Facebook, the strongest catalysts on the horizon are negative. Let’s take a look:

1) FTC inquiries into the billion dollar Instagram deal;

2) SEC inquiries into IPO shenanigans involving Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS) and Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS);

3) Shareholder lawsuits over IPO shenanigans;

4) Slowing growth in the latest earnings announcement;

5) Major problems monetizing the user-base;

6) An alleged move away from core competencies into the highly risky smartphone hardware space;

7) Core gaming partner Zynga (NASDAQ:ZNGA) is diversifying away from the Facebook platform;

8) Increasing competition from Google+ (NASDAQ:GOOG), Path, Pinterest, and many more niche social networks.

In addition to these major issues facing the company, Facebook’s stock is highly valued and currently not discounting all these negative catalysts. Am I missing other negative catalysts? If so, please let me know in the comments below.

The acquisition rationale for Salesforce.com seems to be to leverage Buddy Media’s customer base and leads...

Social media outfits are in high demand and the latest to be snapped up may be Buddy Media, a five-year old company that manages their Facebook presence for brands.

Don’t Miss: Is Buddy Media Getting Friendly With Salesforce.com?

Buddy Media is near to being acquired by SalesForce.com (NYSE:CRM) for a reported valuation of $800 million. Reportedly, Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) was also a bidder, but was unsuccessful.

Buddy Media has recently made a foray into other social media platforms such as Twitter, LinkedIn (NYSE:LNKD) and Google. The acquisition rationale for Salesforce seems to be to leverage Buddy Media’s customer base and leads.

The proposed acquisition comes on the heels of Oracle’s (NASDAQ:ORCL) $300 million acquisition of social media marketing outfit, Virtue.

Investment firm RBC Capital Markets said it expects a new MacBook Pro from Apple next month, an updated version of the MacBook Air in the next 6 months, and a new iPhone in September or October...

Some more fodder was added to the Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) rumor fire after investment firm RBC Capital Markets said it expected at least two revamped products from the company this year. RBC analyst Amit Daryanani wrote in a note to investors that Apple was likely to revamp its MacBook line later this quarter and release a new iPhone in September or October, both predictions that largely mirror expectations from other commentators.

Don’t Miss: Tim Cook: TV is on Apple’s Mind.

Daryanani expects a new MacBook Pro as early as next month and an updated version of the MacBook Air in the next 6 months. Apple is thought to be using Intel’s (NASDAQ:INTC) next-generation Ivy Bridge processors in its new portables. The analyst believes the Mac lineup will grow 10-15 percent on an annual basis.

He also said that the next generation of the company’s “flagship product”, the iPhone, will come equipped with 4G LTE technology and a redesigned look, with the product likely being available in the late summer or early fall time frame. The analyst also wrote that a two-year design cycle from the iPhone from Apple could create increased seasonality for the device. “In our view, a redesigned version of the iPhone every two years will likely result in higher unit sales relative to the iPhone ‘S’ versions as carrier contracts last roughly 2 years and consumers have historically been attracted to the new design concepts created by Apple,” he wrote.

Daryanani noted that Apple saw just 21 percent growth in iPhone shipments year over year in the fourth quarter of 2011 compared to 91 percent growth in the fourth quarter of 2010.

The note also predicted Apple stock to hit $700 mark within the next 6 to 12 months, spurred by the new products as well as a sustained momentum of iPad sales.

The analyst also had an opinion on the rumored television set from the company, saying the device made “strategic sense” for the company even though there were worries that the product may drag on Apple’s margins. Daryanani predicts Samsung, LG, and Sony (NYSE:SNE) as the companies that will get hurt the most if Apple were to launch an industry changing TV product. RBC expects Apple to sell 10 million units of the rumored device in the first 12 months for $15 billion in revenue and $1.77 in earnings per share.

Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ): According to the Sacramento Business Journal, Verizon is making plant to cut and relocate jobs around Sacramento in hopes to restructure the company’s customer service operations.

Frontier Communications Corporation (NYSE:FTR): Due to shares being lower than they have been in decades, Nomura makes a contrarian call on Frontier Communications. Nomura believes that the company’s huge wireline subscriber losses could narrow quickly. The losses are tied to assets bought from Verizon. Frontier also shows low multiples and heavy short interest, by May 15 23.2% of the float was shorted, and shares may be driven higher as a result of EPS revisions.

Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE:ALU): According to Bloomberg, Alcatel-Lucent CEO Ben Verwaayen believes that European phone companies widen the gap with the U.S. and risk turning the European region into a “digital desert” by refusing to invest in networks.

Has J.C. Penney (NYSE:JCP) learned its lesson about the popularity of sales? It now seems that the company has all but completely reversed new CEO Ron Johnson’s questionable strategy of maintaining profitable ‘everyday’ prices by not having promotions (sales). The backtrack began on Memorial Day weekend, and plans are now afoot for several Black Friday events for later in 2012.

Disney (NYSE:DIS) plans to introduce a mobile app in the near term that should enable Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA) TV subscribers to view the Disney Channel from mobile devices. Sports channel ESPN already has a similar arrangement with certain cable companies.

The United States International Trade Administration rules in Whirlpool’s (NYSE:WHR) favor, that competitors Samsung and LG dumped washing machines here at prices that are below fair value. Moreover, the Commerce Department intends to tag tariffs on imports of the appliances as a temporary reaction to the practice. Whirlpool shares spike at the news.

Scientific researchers have hopes that Bristol-Myers’ (NYSE:BMY) BMS-936558 drug might finally be a way in which to use the immune system to help defeat cancer, especially forms of lung cancer. The drug exhibited encouraging results in an early trial, which if successful could generate $4 billion in sales (and beat cancer as a plus?).

The FDA has issued a warning concerning a counterfeit version of Teva Pharmaceutical’s (NASDAQ:TEVA) ADHD drug Adderall, which is currently being sold on websites. Although the fake pills might bring a health risk, there are so far no reports of anyone being harmed by their use.

Teva Pharmaceutical and Par Pharmaceutical (NYSE:PRX) lose their bid in court to market Amarin’s (NASDAQ:AMRN) generic form of Lovaza, AMR101, without rivals. Shares of the two firms thus gave back most of Tuesday’s gains, as hopes of the deal are smashed. Goldman chimes in, saying that the ruling regarding patents covering Lovaza ‘eliminates a key upside opportunity’, and that it renders the extent of its impact on growth to be uncertain at this juncture. The analyst maintains its Neutral on the shares.

Blackstone Group (NYSE:BX) intends to divest all or part of Catalent Pharma Solutions, which contracts with pharma firms to produce and package medicine to Frazier Healthcare. Financials of the potential deal are so far undisclosed.

Alkermes (NASDAQ:ALKS) reports that top-line results from a phase 2b dose-ranging clinical study of ALKS 37 in the treatment of opioid-induced constipation failed to satisfy its pre-specified criteria for advancing into phase 3 clinical trials. Alkermes has thus decided to not advance ALKS 37, and will mull opportunities for out-licensing .

Chesapeake Energy (NYSE:CHK) needs cash to close its $9 billion to $10 billion funding deficit, and will meet with several of its prime lenders later in the week, according to Reuters. The meeting might or might not be regularly scheduled, but CHK’s plans and liquidity issues are certain to be the main subject of the talks. Meanwhile, the firm wants to divest some 57,000 net acres of leaseholds and producing wells in the Woodbine Sand play in east Texas, which likely is part of its plans for debt reduction. The Woodbine parcel is said to contain nine operated and producing wells and one non-operated well.

The largest target of the new strategy will be the Asian market.

Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT) executives will present their company’s plans for Canada, China and Brazil Friday, at the annual meeting in Arkansas. Observers will monitor the comments made there more closely than usual this year, considering that allegations from the bribery matter in Mexico are still ongoing. Also at the meeting, shareholders will see if the movement to boot current board members gets traction, or if the 20 percent return over the past year outweighs that sentiment. Meanwhile, WMT shares slump slightly late in the day, but fare well compared to most others.

General Motors (NYSE:GM) will not advertise on Facebook, but will go ahead with its marketing agreement with the English Premiere League team, Manchester United. Of course there is method in the madness, as the team is hugely popular in Asia, a region in which GM hopes to land a large market share.

Kellogg (NYSE:K) is changing its basic package look after 106 years, introducing a new worldwide branding package that represents the most important change in its history. However, observers in the industry opine that it might take more that bright colors in a modernized look, to reverse slumping sales in the categories.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a recent interview the company is preparing to release some "incredible" new products, fueling brand hysteria while vowing to "double down" on product secrecy...

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) CEO Tim Cook said in a recent interview the company is preparing to release some “incredible” new products, fueling brand hysteria while vowing to “double down” on product secrecy. “The juices are flowing,” he said Tuesday evening during the opening interview at the D: All Things Digital conference. “We have some incredible things coming out.”

Investing Insights: Will Apple Manufacturing Come Back Home?

But while Cook’s secrecy about product development is in keeping with the path laid out by his predecessor, the late Steve Jobs, he did make one notable divergence from that legacy, saying Apple would be more transparent than in the past about issues related to social change, including labor rights in China, for which Apple has faced ongoing scrutiny.

Cook also said he hoped more components for Apple products would be made in the U.S., but remained tight-lipped about the one issue on everyone’s mind: an Apple TV.

That’s not to be confused with Apple TV, a $99 set-top box already in the Apple line-up. Cook called the device, still a relatively niche product, “an area of intense interest for us.” But he did not say anything about rumors the company plans to build a television or create a new type of television content service.

Nor did he give any signal that rumors Apple would release different versions of the iPhone and iPad in different sizes might be true. But he did identify Siri as a priority. The voice-response technology Apple delivered with the iPhone 4S has received a lot of criticism for not working consistently. “There is more that it can do,” Cook said. “I think you’ll be really pleased with some things you will see over the coming months.”

Cook also told the audience to “stay tuned” on the question of whether Apple would strike a partnership with Facebook (NASDAQ:FB), which still hasn’t been integrated into the iPhone in a meaningful way, despite the fact that the number of users accessing the social networking site from mobile devices continues to grow rapidly. “I think we can do more with them,” Cook said of Facebook.

Salesforce.com is reportedly close to closing a $800 million deal to acquire social media management company Buddy Media...

Salesforce.com Inc. (NYSE:CRM) is reportedly close to closing a $800 million deal to acquire Buddy Media, the social media brand management company, according to AllThingsD.

Don’t Miss: Can Google’s Chrome Rival Microsoft’s Windows 8?

Allegedly, Buddy Media chose Salesforce over a competitive bid from Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG). Five-year-old Buddy Media helps brands manage their presence on social media sites. Originally, the company focused on social media heavyweight Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ:FB) but has also branched out to Twitter Inc. and Google Plus.

Previously, it was thought that Facebook or large ad holding company WPP Plc (NASDAQ:WPPGY) would acquire the company. It is expected that Salesforce’s acquisition of Buddy Media will help its clients reach more customers online. Last year, Salesforce purchased another social media company Radian6 for $326 million.

Just last week, another software company snapped up a social media marketing firm when Oracle Corp. (NASDAQ:ORCL) purchased Virtrue for more than $300 million.

Active Stock Radar: RIM Shares Regress, BofA and Alcoa Pump Dow Up

Research in Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) shares plunged more than 7 percent in post market hours. The BlackBerry maker announced it hired JPMorgan (NYSE:JPM) and RBC Capital Markets to review the company’s business and financial performance. RIM has seen its market share dwindle over the years as Apple Inc.’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone has gained popularity.

After closing 9.62 percent lower during regular trading. Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) shares continued to edge lower in late trading. The social-media giant is reportedly expanding its efforts on creating a smartphone. Nick Bilton from the New York Times writes, “One engineer who formerly worked at Apple and worked on the iPhone said he had met with Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s chief executive, who then peppered him with questions about the inner workings of smartphones. It did not sound like idle intellectual curiosity, the engineer said; Mr. Zuckerberg asked about intricate details, including the types of chips used.” Also, Facebook options are now available for trading. Thus, providing investors with a cheaper way to play Facebook shares.

Don’t Miss: Why Did Facebook Flop to New Stock Price Lows Today?

Bank of America Corp. (NYSE:BAC) shares closed 4 percent higher on Tuesday and continued to climb higher in extended trading. The JPMorgan multi-billion dollar loss fall-out has investors running towards banks with less publicized problems.

Despite trading near 52-week lows, shares of Alcoa Inc. (NYSE:AA) popped 3 percent during regular trading. Shares of the aluminum company were one of the best performers in the Dow Jones Industrial Average on Tuesday as value investors explored the industrial sector.

Lululemon Athletica Inc. (NASDAQ:LULU) shared edged slightly lower in late trading, despite Wedbush Securities initiating coverage on the athletic apparel maker with an Outperform rating. The firm also placed a price target of $90 on shares.

Wall St. Brief: FTC Hates on Facebook and Why RIMM CRASHES

Research in Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) shares are down 8% in morning trading after the company’s released its business update on Tuesday. The announcement included a surprise operating loss for the fiscal quarter one, additional job cuts and the hiring of JPMorgan (NYSE:JPM) and RBC (NYSE:RY) to help with a “strategic review; ” this will encompass licensing and partnership opportunities. RIM neither gave details of the loss and employee cuts, nor mentioned a possible sale of the company.

At the AllThings D conference on Tuesday, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) CEO Tim Cook said the company will “double down” on secrecy, but shared enough to keep loyal Apple fans intrigued for months. This included the following nuggets, according to Seeking Alpha: Apple’s TV box is “an area of intense interest,” “we can do more” with Facebook (NASDAQ:FB), different-sized iPads and iPhones and ”If we find we can do more, great.”

Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) has received a “second request” by the Federal Trade Commission regarding its Instagram acquisition. The agency has requested lots of data, suggesting a long review. With the Facebook and Instagram control of the mobile photo-sharing market and the launch of Facebook Camera, concerns have been raised by regulators. This comes as Facebook’s shares fell 9.6% on Tuesday to close at $28.84. In early morning trading today, shares rebounded 1.3%.

Now that Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) has Motorola under its control, AllThingsD has reported that Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) looks toward a settlement in their patent dispute. Android and Xbox injunctions have already been flying around. Last summer, Microsoft and Motorola had been near a deal but not so anymore.

Sony (NYSE:SNE) and Panasonic (NYSE:PC) are the top suitors for an equity stake in Olympus (OCPNY.PK), reported Asahi Shimbun (via Reuters). A decision may be reached by the end of the June with the opportunity for the winner to take a more than 10% stake in the company, valued at several hundred million dollars.

Facebook, Inc. (NASDAQ:FB): Not only is Facebook’s ad revenue growth slowing down, the company’s Payments growth, which saw a surge last year following Facebook’s required 30% cut on virtual goods sales, dropped quarter over quarter in Q1. Henry Blodget believes that 75% growth is optimistic, and the fact that top Payments cutoper Zynga is currently encountering slowing growth.
3 Scorched Stocks Grabbing Headlines Now

Teavana Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:TEA): The present acquisition should not affect earnings per share, this excludes that transaction and integration expenses are expected to be in the range of 4c-5c. According to expectations, the acquisition should dilute earnings per share by 2c. By FY13, the acquisition might increase earnings per share by 3c-4c. Q1 shows an EPS of $.0.10 in-line, and a revenue of $44.3M, up 27% year over year, which misses by $0.6M

Research In Motion Limited (NASDAQ:RIMM): Following the FQ1 warning it included in its “business update,” Research in Motion took a 10% hit to its stock. Practically no analyst has a positive opinion about the company, and many do not believe in the emergence of a buyer who will offer a significant premium. Baird sees no hope in Facebook or Microsoft having interest, and Stene Agee thinks that RIM may only receive a deal at or below current levels. According to Bernstein, the BB10 launch “will most likely turn into a disaster.”

Daily Stock Buzz: Will RIMM Sink or Go Bobbing for Apple?

Research in Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) shares are down more than 7 percent in afternoon trading. The BlackBerry maker announced it hired JPMorgan (NYSE:JPM) and RBC Capital Markets to review the company’s business and financial performance. CEO Thorsten Heins also announced that the company would report a first-quarter operating loss and plans on cutting its work force.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) shares are higher almost 1% in afternoon trading. CEO Tim Cook said during the D: All Things Digital conference that Apple is preparing to release some “incredible” new products. However, he did not provide many details as he promised to “double down” on secrecy.

LinkedIn Corp. (NYSE:LNKD) shares reversed lower down 2 percent in Wednesday afternoon trading. The professional social networking company received an upgrade from Neutral to Buy over at Citigroup (NYSE:C). “LinkedIn has so far demonstrated strong execution,” explained analyst Mark Mahaney.

After falling more than 9 percent on Tuesday, Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) shares are down another 2.46% in afternoon trading.
Late Radar Movers: Lions Gate and TiVo Report Quarterly Losses

Shares of Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. (NYSE:LGF) fell 7 percent after the closing bell. The media company reported a net loss of $22.7 million (17 cents per share) for the fourth-quarter, compared to a net gain of $48.7 million (34 cents per share) a year earlier.

Shares finished the day at $28.19 and continued to edge lower in late trading.

Facebook will have to hold off on celebrating its Instagram buy for a little longer after the Federal Trade Commission said it would investigate the proposed deal at length...

Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) will have to hold off on celebrating its Instagram buy for a little longer after the Federal Trade Commission said it would investigate the proposed deal at length. Facebook has been served a “second request” from the antitrust regulator, meaning the company will have to make fairly large amounts of data and documents available for scrutiny, Reuters reported.

Don’t Miss: Will Facebook Become a LEGENDARY Failure for Investors?

Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) and Twitter are among companies that have been asked about the deal as regulators try to investigate both the high price offered by Facebook and the reason behind the acquisition, wondering whether the idea had been simply to absorb a potential rival or stop another competitor from buying it.

Mark Zuckerberg’s company announced last month that it had successfully made a deal with Instagram owners to acquire the popular photo-sharing for $1 billion in cash and stock. Just a few days before the deal, Instagram had closed a funding round that valued it at $500 million.

Facebook made its public trading debut on May 18 and has since been struggling to keep its shares from dropping as concerns over the social network’s long-term business prospects continue. The company’s shares closed below $29 on Tuesday, in what was a new low. Acquiring Instagram is one of the ways Facebook hopes to tailor its mobile strategy, eventually converting the increasingly popular mobile medium into a viable revenue source.

Earlier this month, Facebook said in a regulatory filing that the deal was now likely to close sometime later this year instead of the earlier predicted second quarter.

The FTC or the Justice Department automatically reviews any acquisition at least worth $68.2 million. However, experts believe the deal is likely to be approved in the end.

The company will start offering free music downloads on its Twitter page on Wednesday, with access to streaming video of live “pop-up” concerts starting in late June. Pepsi plans on making the concerts interactive for viewers, allowing them to tweet the names of songs that they want played during the show. So far, the line up of artsists has not yet been released, but Pepsi has recently partnered with high-profile artists such as Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj for marketing campaigns.

For the next year, Pepsi will post a video summary of weekly music news, based on trending topics, on its Twitter page every Wednesday. The company will then offer followers a free song download based on its weekly summary available at Amazon.com Inc.’s (NASDAQ:AMZN) MP3 store. In order to access the free download, followers will need to include a Pepsi hashtag in a tweet. The new partnership between Twitter and Pepsi is a part of Pepsi’s “Live for Now” campaign, which attempts to use music to win both a younger demographic and market share from The Coca-Cola Co. (NYSE:KO).

Here's a look at the largest shareholders of Las Vegas Sands now...

In 2012, shares of Las Vegas Sands Corp. (NYSE:LVS) are up 11.35 percent. On Tuesday in a client report, Sterne Agee analyst David Bain bucked the trend taken by his peers and stated there may be big growth for some casinos. His short list of recommended ones included Las Vegas Sands (LVS) thanks to its Macau expansion.

With concerns over China’s economy slowing, affluent Chinese may stay away from Macau, known as the world’s best casino locale; in the last few years, Sands has been a big driver of its growth along with Wynn Resorts (NASDAQ:WYNN).

The company’s new Macau property, the Sands Cotai Central casino which opened its first phase in April, could increase the island’s gambling revenue. Bain wrote, ”Cotai Central’s market share gains will be more pronounced in Sept.-Oct. as VIP (games tailored for visiting high-roller gamblers) ramps, the property’s second mass casino opens and room capacity expands”

With the positive research note and the area’s thirst for gambling, will Las Vegas Sands’ largest shareholders increase their holdings? 591 institutional firms indicated owning shares of Las Vegas Sands Corp. (NYSE:LVS) in Q1 2012. These firms reported owning a total of 294.846 million shares on 03/31/2012. The shares closed at $57.57 on 03/31/2012.

All the top business stories of the day in the technology sector ...

Sony (NYSE:SNE) and Panasonic (NYSE:PC) are said to be the top competitors for an equity investment in Olympus (OCPNY.PK), says Asahi Shimbun. The winning bidder will probably make a stake in excess of 10 percent, representing several hundred million dollars, it’s thought, and a decision on the process is expected in June.

Investing Insights: Will Apple Surprise Us With This New Software at WWDC?

Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) reports that the inclusion of its Knowledge Graph panel within search results for millions of subjects, has generated a significant rise in search activity. Sources to the Wakk Street Journal have it that between 10 and 20 percent of searches could feature the panels. However, Google still has work to do, in growing its declining search ad rates, and improving the integration of social networking data within its search results. Separately, the company is said to regret not acquiring Twitter before its valuation jumped to $8 billion, reports a source to BI, and that it still believes that it’s the only one capable of effectively monetizing the microblogging service. Meanwhile, an inside source close to Twitter says that the firm’s initial public offering plans haven’t gone very far, perhaps due to watching the recent notorious IPO of another firm. It’s also rumored that Twitter, which has reached a search arrangement with Bing (NASDAQ:MSFT), is still open to a bid from Google.

Shares of Zynga (NASDAQ:ZNGA) move to new lows, despite an overall upbeat talk from its CEO Mark Pincus at the D10 conference, in which he defended his firm’s acquisition of Draw Something developer OMGPOP. The game has experienced a fall in traffic, but Pincus maintains that the aim was to buy a multi-year franchise, as opposed to a one-time hit. In addition, he led a pep rally on the prospects of Project Z, which investors hope will lower Zynga’s dependence on Facebook.

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) shares move higher Wednesday following Tim Cook’s presentation at D10, as David Einhorn remains convinced that the company will eventually have a $1 trillion market cap. The latter rejects the idea that extensive hedge fund ownership of Apple is a negative, given that hedge funds only hold 5 percent of outstanding shares, and also believes that critics are overlooking how Apple’s software/services ecosystem both amount to a switching cost, and that that encourages the purchase of additional Apple gear.

Business might not be ready to upgrade to Windows 8, opines Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) observer Paul Thurrott, because features of the new operating system are mostly targeted towards consumers, and the completely reconfigured desktop UI, won’t impress corporate buyers. Further, the analyst contends that the decision by MSFT to orient Windows 8 to consumers was a “calculated risk” to hopefully catch up with Apple in that market, but at the same time it could alienate the sector which comprises a large and increasing share of its margins.

Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) shares fall further Wednesday, after rallying slightly in early trading, following its first options trading day on Tuesday. That day’s trading was in-line with the selloff seen in the company’s shares with 202,938 Facebook put contracts were purchased, compared to162,582 call contracts. Implied volatility for the contracts was 63.50, which was higher than that of all but 7 of S&P 500 stocks.

With Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference just a couple weeks away, expectations are centering on the likely unveiling of iOS 6, and the potential for a wholly redesigned MacBook line...

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) on Tuesday launched the official iOS app for its 2012 Worldwide Developers Conference, and also posted the full conference schedule on its website. The conference will kick off on Monday, June 11 with a keynote presentation, as expected. Most Apple enthusiasts know that a keynote presentation usually contains the introduction of some new software, and if they’re lucky, some new hardware as well.

Investing Insights: Will Apple’s New iPhone Eat Up Competitors’ Resources?

The official WWDC 2012 application is a free 5.3 megabyte download designed for both the iPhone and iPad. It’s designed for WWDC attendees, to help them stay up-to-date while at the conference. Users can sign in to the app with the Apple ID associated with their ticket to the conference. From there they can browse the conference schedule, filter the schedule to find what they’re look for, provide feedback on sessions and labs, plan their week, etc.

The conference will feature a number of sessions designed to assist in creating applications for iOS and OS X. Apple is expected to use the keynote speech to unveil iOS 6, the next major upgrade to its mobile operating system for the iPhone and iPad. Some also suspect that Apple will present a redesigned MacBook series after letting the line grow stale over the past couple years while focusing on developing its iPad.

Aside from the date and time of the keynote, no other details are known. Apple’s schedule doesn’t provide any information on who may be speaking, though CEO Tim Cook is likely to lead.

Apple looks to be a step closer to launching the new iPad in China after getting a network access license for a device compatible with the China Unicom network...

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) looks to be a step closer to launching the new iPad in China after getting a network access license for a device compatible with the China Unicom (NYSE:CHU) network. China Unicom is the country’s second-largest mobile operator by subscribers after China Mobile (NYSE:CHL).

Apple is believed to have been slow to release its third-generation iPad in China, its second-largest market behind the U.S., because of a running trademark lawsuit against Proview International.

The Hong Kong-based Proview has contended that it holds owns the China rights to the business name iPad, while Apple continues to insist that it purchased the rights for it back in 2009. The court case has been on for a while in a local court, with Apple appealing a lower court’s decision in favor of the Chinese company. The two had been in settlement talks a few weeks ago on the appeal court’s insistence.

Now, an update on China’s Telecommunication Equipment Certification Center website shows that Apple has been issued a license to begin sales for a device with high-speed wireless data capabilities. The device is noted to be compatible with the 3G standard, wide band code division multiple access. Has there been a secret breakthrough with Proview?

Apple has finally reacted to all the speculation about a high-definition television set from the company, with chief executive Tim Cook saying it was an area of intense focus for the company...

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) has finally reacted to all the speculation about a high-definition television set from the company, with chief executive Tim Cook saying it was a subject of focus for the company. “This is an area of intense focus for us,” Cook said during an on-stage interview at the D10 conference in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. “We’re going to keep pulling this string and see where it takes us.”

Don’t Miss: Apple’s CEO Hints at INCREDIBLE New Products.

The speculation had first started after Apple co-founder Steve Jobs told his biographer last year that he had “finally cracked” how to build a game-changer TV. It gathered pace after several analysts and supply sources spoke of the product possibly being in manufacturing already. Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster said Apple may unveil the product this year and release it in 2013.

While Cook did not answer the specific question on whether the company was already making a television set, he also added that Apple already had good relationships with content owners. Apple already sells a $99 set top box called Apple TV that streams Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) and other content.

“Here’s the way we would look at that, not just at this area but other areas, and ask can we control the key technology?” Cook said in response to a question about improving the television experience for consumers. “Can we make a significant contribution, far beyond what others have done in this area? Can we make a product that we would want?”

Jobs’ comments had led to people believing that any television product Apple created would have a simple user interface and that it would wirelessly synchronize content with the company’s other devices. Other recent rumors have suggested that the device may have Siri integration and FaceTime capabilities.

Online travel service Kayak has reportedly postponed its IPO roadshow scheduled to start last week as the company stops to take better stock of investor confidence in the wake of the Facebook tumble...

Kayak Software seems to have gotten trading cold feet after the post-IPO troubles of Facebook (NASDAQ:FB). The online travel service has reportedly postponed its roadshow scheduled to start last week as the company stops to take better stock of investor confidence. Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS), the lead bank on Facebook’s initial share sale, had also been hired to lead Kayak’s IPO.

Don’t Miss: Is Facebook the Biggest Loser?

Facebook went public earlier this month in what was the biggest technology IPO ever, but its shares have dropped 24 percent since its market debut until close of markets on Tuesday. Investors have been worried about Facebook’s revenue growth opportunities and questions have been raised about the underwriting banks’ management of the offering. A group of shareholders filed a lawsuit against the company and its underwriters, alleging its offering stock at $38 a share was overpriced. Facebook also posted a first-quarter profit this year decrease as sales growth slowed.

Kayak first filed to go public in November 2010, and its period of 18 months without pushing ahead with an offering is already four times longer than the average waiting period for companies. Kayak posted a profit of $4.15 million in the first quarter of the year, compared with a loss of $6.91 million in the year-earlier period. Revenue rose 39 percent to $73.3 million. However, it faces growing competition from other online travel services, including those provided by Google (NASDAQ:GOOG).

IT cloud-computing services company ServiceNow and Internet security provider Palo Alto Networks, which have both planned IPOs led by Morgan Stanley, are still on track to go public, according to Bloomberg.

Amazon went through this investment cycle once before only to emerge as the Wal-Mart (WMT) of the internet...

What’s the next step in growing your business when you’re an incredibly successful online retailer? If you’re Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) the answer is to branch out into technology development. The popular online store took one of its most successful businesses, peddling books, and went paperless — launching the popular Kindle e-reader that utilizes the company’s vast library of literature. But they didn’t stop there. Amazon is a force to be reckoned with, offering its customers access to web-based storage as well as digital entertainment in the form of games, television, movies and a growing list of offerings. But with a very pricey price to earnings ratio around 174, a stock price hovering at nearly $215 and a litany of competitors, is Amazon’s stock worth picking up?

Don’t Miss: Should We Get Ready For An Apple Product Onslaught?

Let’s analyze the stock with the relevant sections of our CHEAT SHEET investing framework:

C = Catalyst for a Stockʼs Movement – With it’s high profile ventures, Amazon seems to constantly be making news. Whether the topic at hand is a new partnership with a major firm, updated a Kindle device, or scaling a new cloud-based venture for developers, the company provides potential for price movement. In short, the company has a continuous product release cycle to prospectively push shares higher.

H = High Quality Product Pipeline for Future Good News – Where to begin? Amazon stands to benefit from its investment in technology in numerous ways. First, in the cloud Amazon.com leads the pack in cloud-based technology with its Amazon Web Services. This will help the company as mobile internet use expands. And unlike competitor Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ:FB), the company actually has a revenue model in place to take advantage of mobile devices.

Next up, the Kindle. While the Kindle Fire lags behind Apple Inc.’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad in the tablet race, the Kindle is still king of the e-readers. Additionally, Amazon generates consistent revenue every time a Kindle user buys a book, movie, or game from Amazon.com. Finally, Amazon’s foray into a wider breath of entertainment options provides opportunities for new partnerships including a new venture that pairs Amazon and Microsoft Corp.’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) Xbox 360 via a new Amazon Instant Video app.

E = Debt to Equity Ratio Near 0 – Amazon’s debt has been increasing after several years on the decline thanks to the financing of multiple new operations and ventures. However, the company maintains a low long-term debt to equity ratio that is currently hovering around 0.18. This is the sign of a company with incredible strong operations supporting cash flow.

A = A-Level Management Runs the Company – Jeff Bezos has long been one of America’s favorite CEO’s. This understated billionaire and founder of Amazon.com has not only built a profitable company, he also embraced change in ways that have helped his company become more dynamic. Many praise Bezos’ long-term vision for the company, and so far, it’s worked. Since Bezos took the company public in 1997 it has returned over 12,000 percent to shareholders.

T = Trends Support the Industry in which the Company Operates – While people have proclaimed the death of physical books, digital entertainment is not going anywhere. Amazon is firing on all cylinders when it comes to engaging users in the field of digital books, movies, television, and the cloud. The company is constantly expanding and improving the methods through which it delivers content to customers and stands poised to rival technology juggernauts Apple and Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG).

Conclusion

Amazon.com has many faithful followers who believe the company’s commitment to innovation and long-term vision will pay off for investors in the future as it has in the past. Historically, the company has outperformed both the S&P and many of its industry peers. However, while revenues have grown, so have expenses as the company builds out its technological infrastructure. As expenses eat into profits, the company’s price to earnings ratio has soared. The median price target for the stock is currently $255, which gives Amazon a roughly 19 percent upside. For many, increasing expenses are simply the price you pay for the innovation and expansion needed to run a company as successful as Amazon. And Amazon went through this investment cycle once before only to emerge as the Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT) of the internet.
