You don't have to get rid of those pieces of furniture that no longer fit your decor. Instead have them refinished. The pictures here, show an Armoire that was in knotty pine (pic. #1) and didn't quite fit the clients new home. With some careful thought as to the original style of this piece, a black distressed look was chosen (pic.#2). It will now fit nicely into any decor and has a timeless quality about it. Keep in mind, this look can also be accomplished with most kitchen/bathroom cabinets at a fraction of the cost of replacement. It also is a great way to update the look of a front door.

Exterior Painting season is here. But finding a flattering color scheme can be a daunting task. To help reduce frustration when planning your exterior house painting project, here are some of the "ins and outs". The beauty of your home begins with the right exterior color scheme.

     1. Take into account objects that will not change, such as stonework-bricks-roofing

     2. Take into account the color of your neighbors homes. You don't want to have the same color as the house across the street. Also check with your neighborhood HOA, to see if there are any restrictions

     3. Evaluate the style of your home, stay true to it's roots, you can't turn a traditional home into a craftsman style with just paint.

     4. Have a general idea as to the overall color, i.e. Blue/green/browns/golds/grays

     5. Generally go for 3 colors. Choose between a light or dark base color. Light color schemes tend to make a house stand
out from it's surroundings, while darker colors sometimes blend in better with nature. The trim color is usually opposite the base in intensity

    6. Next decide if you want warm or cool tones. Know that some colors fade more than others.

    7. Choose an accent color. Make sure it contrasts well with your base and trim color. Doors, shutters and architectural
details look best with a well chosen accent color.

      8. Don't be afraid to ask for professional help. It's a small investment to make for something that you need to live with for a
long time.

The Recipe for the "Best Kitchen Lighting"

The Kitchen has morphed into a multi-tasking room that serves many functions and life styles. For that reason it is more important than ever to incorporate flexible and appropriate lighting options that fit it's many needs. So what is the best way to ensure the kitchen is adequatley lit?

It's all about layering and the "Power of Three". Use a minimum of three types of lighting:

A central fixture or fixtures
Recessed
Undercabinet (task lighting)

For dramatic results put each on different switches or dimmers. Having only one of these components creates a static and sometimes "one dimensional" effect. You need a combination of recessed cans, undercabinet task lighting, toe kick or covelighting, with the additional element of decorative pendants over an island area and/or a decorative shading over the breakfast nook.

Placement of the proper lighting is also paramount. By placing your undercabinet lighting at the front of the undercabinet instead of against the wall, the light will be distrubuted evenly over the area below. You can even use diffusers to eliminate the reflection of undercabinet lighting, often seen in glossy countertops.

The ALA (American Lighting Assoc.) also recommends installing recessed fixtures 30 inches from the wall to illuminate the countertop without casting shadows.

Indeed, many of todays popular kitchen materials can create unique lighting challenges. However, a well thought out lighting system can prove to be a very valuable asset for many years.

The two most common mistakes homeowners make when installing pendant lighting in the kitchen.

Not placing them at the proper height.
Not installing enough.

Height -- Each pendant should be mounted so that the bottom of the shade is approximately 66 inches above the floor. At that height, it is possible to look across the room, below the pendants, and still create a dramatic focal point.

If the shades are not very deep and there is seating at the kitchen island or peninsula, install the pendants a few inches lower, say about 60 inches.

Quantity-- Place one pendant for every two feet of counter space. For example, a six-foot island requires three pendants, one in the center with another 20 inches on each side. Usually, an odd number of pendants over a counter or island creates a better visual balance.

Size also matters when determining spacing and the amount of pendants. Thin, narrow pendants might look better with the addition of one or two extra fixtures.

How to choose the right size chandelier for your room?

If mounting the chandelier above a dining room table, the diameter of the chandelier is based upon the width of the table itself.

This is calculated by subtracting 12 inches from the total width of the table. In addition, for 9 ft. ceilings, the chandelier should be mounted roughly 30-33 inches from the top of the dining room table. For taller ceilings, add 3 inches for every one foot increase in ceiling height. So for a 12 foot ceiling, the chandelier should be 39-42 inches above the dining room table.

When the chandelier is not being used in a dining room, the size is determined by the room dimensions. There are two basic ways to calculate the diameter of a chandelier using room dimensions.

The diameter is calculated by multiplying 2 inches by the total width of the room in feet. Thus a width of 12 feet would require a chandelier with a diameter of 24 inches.
The other method is to add the dimensions of the room together and convert into inches. In other words a 10 ft x 12 ft. room would have a chandelier with a diamter of 22 inches.

These are both good "rule of thumb" calculations, but some judgment will be necessary. It is usually best to err on the small side when you have more elaborate and traditional chandeliers and bit on the larger side with more modern and contempory designs.

Continued slumping home values pulled the overall cost-to-value ratio down again this year, extending the downward trend that began in 2006. But whether you are buying or selling “First impression matters” These results are still showing us that history is our best teacher and overtime it has taught us that our home is still the most valuable investment most of us have. So how do you get the most “Bang for your Buck” when it comes to supporting, maintaining or increasing your homes’ value?

First of all, there are two types of remodeling projects.

#1. Those we have to do such as:

a. roofing

b. siding

c. window replacement

d. energy conservation

#2 Those we want to do, such as:

a. The need for improved space

b. The need for more space

c. The need for different space

Use of glass in kitchen cabinets

These pictures are courtesy of Kitchen and Bath design, and they show some wonderful uses to perk up cabinets. The first one shows the use of a visually appealing curved glass cabinet that adds a completely different element than just the standard sharp corner cabinet.

Here the use of beveled glass and lighting adds architectural detail and and really kicks it up a notch.

Don't really want to see totally through the glass doors, but just a hint of what's behind?, add semi opaque glass for some obscurity.

Have a peninsula? Want to retain a view? Want to make the kitchen seem bigger and airy? Don't want to loose cabinet space.? Try having both sides of the cabinets in glass, this is a great way to use natural light and have access to both sides of the cabinet. Instant beauty.

Here's another view of the use of clear glass see through cabinets. Notice how light this feels, another use to maximize the natural light.

Want to break up a wall of wood? Then using glass door fronts may just be the answer. Another option here would be to have solid wood fronts on the lower half and reserve the uppers for glass fronts, add ambient lighting and you have a dramatic look to your space.

Storage and beauty, imagine the difference if this was all in solid wood. Here the use of glass fronts creates a beautiful buffet.

Here the use of ribbed glass doors can lend a bit of a contemporary clean look.

Arrgghh, Why is it so hard to do your own space?

OK, so I thought I would share a bit of insight into this whole design process stuff and give you a personal glimpse into what goes on even in the head of a professional, when faced with personal design decisions. Here goes, don't judge me too harshly. I am finally getting granite counters in my kitchen. After years of selecting them for clients, the time has come for me to enjoy the beauty and ambiance that only granite can provide. (This might have happened earlier, but college tuition seemed to take precedence). So with that decision made, it should have been a quick jump to selecting the product, Right? WRONG!!! First I had to select a new sink, (under mount of course). This actually wasn't so hard. After research, I decided on a composite black granite double bowl by Elkay (one of the leaders in granite sinks). The faucet also by Elkay has a real commercial grade look to it. So far so good! Now on to the granite choice. What muddied the waters a bit here is that I needed to save the existing backsplash. I actually like my current backsplash (it has a timelessness to it), but that really made an impact on deciding what granite slab would go with it. So off I trotted to collect samples from the tile and granite suppliers.
Many of them looked great in the store, but when I brought them home the lighting in my home gave them a whole different look. Are you all listening?
Lighting plays a HUGE factor in every selection. Finally selected a granite piece from a 12 inch square, with a name that I can't remember. Step 2, go to the slab supplier to pick out the actual slabs that I would use. Now if you have never had the opportunity to do this, it is an amazing experience. But there is a 95% chance that the small sample you have will look NOTHING and I repeat NOTHING like the actual slab. Now I wasn't silly enough to think this was going to be a quick process without emotional turmoil so I did bring along a friend with me. It's important to note a couple of things here, my friend Amy is also a professional designer ( we have over 30 years combined experience) so clearly I was in good hands should emotion take over where good sense should prevail. Did I also mention that Amy and I have the exact opposite in tastes!
So armed with backsplash samples in hand, and designer friend in tow off we went. As expected, my original choice looked absolutely awful in a huge slab. So the selection process started over from scratch. Wandering the vast array of slabs can be a daunting task, but my eye finally caught a slab that had everything I needed (and everything my backsplash needed also). Should have been simple from here right? Wrong again. The slabs came in polished and matte finish. Oh what to do! By now my decision making skills were sorely lacking (after all I am emotionally involved in this decision) and I really liked them both. Here's is where professional assistance is most valuable. After all, I had already asked everyone else down there, and it seemed to be a 50/50 split.
Amy was able to bring some clarity to the situation by asking me questions about the overall look that I wanted and present and future color options.
As we were pondering my choices, another lady walked by with that "deer in the headlights" look. We explained that we were designers and offered to shed some light on her dilemma. OK, creative juices started flowing, within minutes I was able to help her select the perfect slab (one that went with her current backsplash) in addition we were even able to select the perfect paint color options that would pick up on the subtle colors in the slab.
So really what's the point of this story, a couple of things, number one, it's always harder to do your own space because we are all influenced by our emotions and our objectivity becomes muddled. Number two, there are a ton of nice choices out there and you can't have them all. You need to develop an initial game plan and stick with it. Design assistance is invaluable when it comes to these two points. I am so grateful that I had someone to keep me on track and remind me of all the points that I share with my clients.
By the way, I decided on the polished slab and it will be installed this week. I can hardly wait.

Kitchen transformations and updating idea's

As the weather starts to turn warmer (hopefully) and we get the itch to update or change a few things, no other room in the house will give you the most "bang for your buck" as a kitchen update. Whether you are looking for a total remodel or just something along the lines of a "face lift" or freshening up, there are numerous possibilities. So with that in mind, I thought I would start a short series on ideas that can inspire you along the way. There are numerous aspects to kitchen updates but no other element has the transforming power of cabinetry. With the economy still in a fragile situation, I am asked many times just what can be done to existing cabinets to give them a fresh look. One good option, if the cabinets are in good shape, (maybe just outdated) is a good coat of paint. The transformation is amazing. Don't think you are stuck with a dated look of oak, with the right color combinations your kitchen will have a totally fresh new look. The picture at the top shows a "Butter Yellow" paint, softened with a glaze over the top. Yellow cabinetry can give even the darkest kitchen a sunnier disposition and it comes in a surprising variety of shades, from pale buttermilk, zesty lemon or gold. I have personally updated a clients oak kitchen cabinets with this theme and the outcome was outstanding.

This year's colors trends lean a bit toward the neutrals, and pewter is considered one of the neutrals. Black cabinetry has long been of favorite of mine, but if you want something a bit softer you can get fabulous effects with the subtle sheen of pewter. This neutral can act as a bridge between vintage and modern. Coupled with stainless steel appliances this can be a real eye popper.

If you're a bid timid about going too far with colored cabinetry, then think about concentrating it where it will have the most impact. That could be an island, or an amoire-style pantry or anything that you would like to create as a focal point. By repeating the accent color in other parts of the room, you will gain continuity and the magic of a room that flows well.

Not just "color" but the "finish" applied acts as major impact on the final look. Here, a glossy lacquer finish maximizes the reflectivity and intensity of the soft green color. This lends itself to a more modern contemporary look, whereas the same color used with a matte finish would have muted the green and lended itself to a more traditional
ambiance.

How about a "mix and match"? Try mixing your white cabinetry with a vibrant statement. Mixing colors let's you enjoy the best of both worlds and ensures a visually interesting result.

The two photo's above show the wide versatility of color choices,the photo on the right is done in a soft gray blue with a high gloss finish that gives an edgier look than the previously all white cabinetry. By using the high gloss finish, the look lends itself to a more contemporary feeling. The picture on the left gathered it's inspiration from the china plate on display, creating a warm and friendly ambiance. Whatever your inspiration or ideas are, a fabulous and economical kitchen renovation might just start with the cabinetry. About two years ago, I passed the intense requirements needed to become a LEED - AP (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design- Accredited Professional). This introduced me to "Sustainable Design and Green Building"
initiatives. It used to be we thought of the 3 "R's" as reading/writing/arithmetic.
Today's acronyms in reference to sustainability are REDUCE/REUSE/RECYCLE/RENEW. So when I see a company maximizing eco-savvy elements, I can clearly feel comfortable sharing that with my clients to help them make informed purchases. Here is information from the Hunter Douglas shutter collection in regards to the four key categories of earth friendly sustainability.

REDUCE--

Customer satisfaction equals quality and TEAMWORK!

I often speak of the value of teamwork for the successful design process and nowhere has this been more evident than in this last week. The above pictures show the process of installing Hunter Douglas custom wood plantation shutters. Although there were only two windows, one required providing privacy and view retention, drilling into travertine and covering a large expanse of window space. The other application was a pass thru that needed to look great from both sides. In addition the finished product needed to color coordinate with the cabinetry in the rest of the 5000 sq ft home. We choose the "Heritance" wood shutters by Hunter Douglas and achieved a custom color match that was just perfect. During installation, the client stated he did not want the magnet piece (that holds the louver doors closed) to be seen, so it was decided to recess it into the light gap strip. Enter Jeff Bjorge of "Jeff Bjorge Contracting", the general contractor on the job. Within minutes he had (with the precision of a surgeon), chiseled the exact size to recess the magnet, seconds later he had disassembled the magnet and re drilled the hole to accommodate a screw for attachment. On the second window application, Lee Harshberger (Hunter Douglas) and Bart Reynolds (Reynolds Installation) are extremely intent on perfect centering and alignment of the shutters over the soaking tub. In addition, this application required an additional support that had to be implemented on site (again by Jeff Bjorge). All the hard work and efforts by the team (client-designer-supplier-installer-contractor) provided the exact product and application the homeowner required.

2010 forecasts

Color is one of the first things we notice when entering a room. It can set a mood, provide comfort or give voice to our personalities. The right color brings out the beauty of furnishings and enhances a room's decor. In fact, the impact of color is so important to every aspect of our lives, there is an international organization called the Color Marketing Group (CMG) that follows and reports on color trends and developments in all industries from home, fashion or automotive. Many companies rely on their forecasts to make the right color selections to be in alignment with trends that haven't even hit the market yet.

For 2010, the trends are defined as a combination of classic and contemporary. Cool and warm, quiet and vibrant, stable and unpredictable.

Lighting Tips

Lighting is one of the most important yet understated elements of any space.
Yet one of the most overlooked. Good lighting can transform the simplest of spaces to one of great interest, in addition, poor or neglected lighting can reduce a magnificent space to simply mundane. There are four basic types of light that can and should be used in layers, to achieve the best lighting design. They are: ambient lighting, task lighting, accent lighting and decorative lighting.

Ambient lighting fills the undefined areas of a room with a soft level of general light, enough for someone to navigate the space.

Task lighting is a bright light that illuminats a particular area where a visual activity such as food prep or reading will take place.

Accent lighting is similar to task lighting, in that it consists of largely directed light used to focus attention to itself or some object.

Decorative lighting can fit any of the above categories to create the environment that you desire. The pictures above, reflect the use of LED (light emitting diode) lighting to illuminate the translucency of an onyx sink in a small powder bath and an onyx counter top in a butlers pantry. Both situations create a simple, yet stunning use of light, while creating significant ambiance. Psychology of Color

Ever find yourself in a room that you just weren't comfortable in?

Maybe you felt restless, uneasy, agitated or on the other hand too comfortable and relaxed in a space that required you to be more productive.

Are you aware that homes with predominately blue interiors have the reputation of taking 5 times longer to sell. Did you know the most flattering colors for a bathroom are those that pick up on skin tones. It's really no mystery, the art of Color selection can greatly influence an individuals mood and productivity.

BLUE-too much blue can be chilling and impersonal. Research shows that looking at blue decreases a persons body temperature, heart rate and blood pressure. It's no wonder that an overly blue interior can make a perspective buyer feel, well, blue.

Blue can be associated with calm, loyalty, serenity, authority, protection and promoting intellectual thought.

RED- On the other hand has been found to produce the opposite effect. It can increase body temperature, blood pressure and heart rate as well as increase appetite. It can decrease restfulness and create an environment of over stimulation. It is not recommended to paint bedrooms in shades of red. Although dining rooms painted red are quite acceptable.

In addition, red can give a real punch to a room when used as either an accent wall or used as an accessory color.

RED is associated with danger, passion, energy, warmth adventure and optimism.

YELLOW- finding the right shade can be a real challenge. Bright shades can stimulate aggression and feelings of emotional distress, therefore they might not be the best choices for bedrooms. Soft shades can induce a sense of calm and stability.

YELLOW is associated with sunshine, energy and creativity. It can also stimulate the intellect.

GREEN- Enhances a sense of friendliness, especially when combined with soft blue. Green promotes feelings of well being and harmony with nature. It enhances feelings of security, stability and balance. It is known to aid concentration, sometimes making it a good color choice for offices and study areas.

ORANGE- Induces a sense of friendliness and supports warm communication and outward focus. Orange is associated with stability, reassurance, warmth, sunset and Autumn leaves, it is also suggested to aid digestion. Shades of orange are great for family rooms and living room areas.

BROWN- Promotes a sense of stability and security. Brown is also known as the new neutral. With the numerous shades of brown varying from beige to rich chocolate, it will look great with almost any color. To spice things up and give visual punch to a room, add lively accents in almost any color to compliment the shade of brown.

PURPLE-Supports inward focus more than blue. It also supports the feeling of disconnection from reality. PURPLE is associated with magic, creativity, joy and fertility. It can also add a sense of luxuriousness.

Purple was once reserved solely for nobility. Some shades can be overpowering, so it is best to keep the color toned down or used as accessories.

PINK-Promotes a feeling of safety and that of being cared for. Strong pink short circuits fear and violent behavior. Pink is associated with femininity and spiritual matters, as it simulates the mist area between the sky and heaven. The right shade of pink tends to create a stress free sanctuary. Pink has been a long standing feminine choice for little girls rooms.

Gray- is associated with sophistication. It can be used for any room. Neutral colors such as gray can be used to bring a sense of order and peace to a colorful palette. Gray is considered smart, with ranges from dark charcoal to misty silver. Gray can look stunning with colorful accents.

Gray, however can be a daunting shade in the pacific northwest where the predominance of gray skies in addition to shades of gray on an interior can influence moods tending towards feelings of depression.

BLACK- can lend a feeling of sophistication and elegance to any room. Accessorizing with a touch of black adds an element of class to any space.

1. Determine the mood or ambiance that you want to create

2. Establish your favorite and least favorite colors

3. Sample the color choice and live with it for 24-48 hours. Try to catch the changes under different lighting conditions. The term "metamerism" means that a color can acquire different hues under different lighting conditions.

This was actually a "design on a dime" project for a young girl that wanted a fun, yet a bit more sophisticated look for her bedroom. In addition, Dad wanted a room that would grow with her tastes. The current room had tall vaulted ceilings, irregular shaped walls and the existing murals broke up the room and made it look cluttered and busy. The main expense was sanding , priming and repairing the existing walls and replacing the woodwork. (repeat after me " thou shalt NEVER paint murals on woodwork).

The room was painted with Miller Paint, color Devine Kiwis and Beans. By painting the room one color, the room appears larger, without the visual breakup of the irregular ceiling. The bedding and accessories where purchased at a local box store and the beaded window treatments (which replicate the bedding) were found online. The end result-- a sophisticated and fun look that will last for years. It has always been my opinion, that truly great design is the end product of a great team. The most successful projects are always the collaboration of contractor-designer-client and gifted craftsmen and artisans. Here we see the creation of a one of a kind stair railing. the clients vision was to have the "earthy, organic look of trees and vines" to compliment the overall ambiance of the home. You can see from the pictures the painstaking process that is involved.
Here, Tom is heating and forging the ends of the vine grain round stock to form branch ends.
You can see the branch pieces on the table and Tom fitting one branch in place. You can also see the bender on the right that is used to create the organic look. Each piece is fit into place to resemble a vine. You can see the straight pieces on the table, waiting to be formed as needed. See the gray ends where we have sandblasted each piece after heating and forging to clean the scale and discoloration.
Once a single branch is formed to meet the desired look, it is tack welded in place. We do a few branches and then step back and look the arrangement over to ensure that it looks natural. Occasionally we cut off one branch and rework it to provide a more natural look. Look on the lower right, on the table. There is a 4" round circle with a center stud (handle) that is used to ensure that there are no spaces greater than 4" diameter. This is done to meet the building codes.
After al the pieces are in place and we like the design, Tom welds everything together and Linda takes the finished panel and grinds/sands/files off the rough spots and welding splatter. Then we sandblast the entire railing once again to remove the welding discoloration and any other areas that need to be cleaned.
It's a slow process, but we are enjoying.
As a designer, it is always a privledge to work with such gifted artists.

In order to stand comfortably in your bathroom, do you need one foot in the tub? Over the past 30 years, the average size of bathrooms in new homes has almost doubled. However, in many older houses the main bathroom has remained at its original 5- by 8-foot size.
Feel like time has passed your bathroom by? Don’t despair. The following eight tips from Kohler Design Center designer Diana Schrage will help you update your small bathroom, either by saving physical space or by using design techniques to increase the perception of space.

Enlarge photoTIP 1: Toilet upgrade. Old toilets are larger and less efficient than newer models. To give yourself more room to operate, consider replacing your old model with a compact toilet. It's the same size as a round-front model and still provides the comfort of an elongated seat. Plus, newer toilets use less water, making them friendlier to the environment.TIP 2: Stick with solid colors. In a small room, busy patterns overpower and appear to shrink the space. Light, natural tones lend an open, airy feel. If you want to get creative, play with textures rather than patterns. Keep prints light and to a minimum.

TIP 3: Use corner storage. Install shelving or build your storage units into the corner. Small bathrooms need to make use of all available space. Corners provide those extra inches, and create unique design solutions.TIP 4: Work at the right height. Consider hanging your cabinet from the wall at a more comfortable height (around 34 or 36 inches) to avoid unnecessary bending. If possible, use niche shelving and a mirrored medicine cabinet to remove bulky furniture.
TIP 5: Choose a smaller faucet. Change your faucet to a space-saving, single-control model.TIP 6: Downsize the vanity. Save real and perceived space by installing a petite vanity, smaller pedestal or wall-mounted sink. Console tables, even if they're not particularly small, help expand the perception of space thanks to their slender legs. You'll want to add shelving to make up for lost storage with a pedestal sink.

TIP 7: Lower your bath profile. To give the illusion of more space, consider replacing your old tub with a lower-walled model. Look for a 5-foot tub with a flat bottom. They're perfect for showering, but still deep enough for a pleasant bath. If you don't have the dimensions for a full bath, consider a corner shower enclosure.
TIP 8: Streamline the shower. Choose a sliding shower door or shower screen. Sliding doors don't require door clearance, and the clear glass acts like a window, opening the space even more.By using some imagination and a few simple tips, you can turn your cramped bathroom into a cozy retreat—without moving any walls.
