Donna Jean Godchaux MacKay will always be remembered for the lustrous vocals and lovely demeanor she brought to her near-decade in the Grateful Dead. But when she and her husband Keith moved on, they founded the Heart of Gold Band. To honor her passing (November 2, 2025) and celebrate her life (and her birthday, August 22nd), the Heart of Gold Band and a number of friends and family will assemble at the Mystic Theatre for two nights of music, joy, sweet memories and probably a few tears. They’ll play tunes from throughout her career, from Muscle Shoals to Egypt and beyond.

Donna Jean Thatcher was born in Florence, Alabama, and by the time she was in high school, she was singing harmonies at the two studios that created the legendary “Muscle Shoals Sound,” including Percy Sledge’s “When a Man Loves a Woman” and Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds.” She moved to California, met and married Keith Godchaux, and then introduced herself to Jerry Garcia: “I need your phone number, because my husband is going to be your new keyboard player.” She was right. She also brought her exquisite voice to
the band.

Keith Godchaux’s untimely death in 1980 brought an unfortunate end to the Heart of Gold Band, but the partnership of Steve Kimock and Greg Anton it created led to the band Zero and a great deal more memorable music.Donna Jean was one of the sweetest and most-loved women ever. She touched countless hearts and now we gather in love and gratitude to celebrate her spirit, the music and the enduring legacy she leaves behind.

Hot Buttered Rum Details New Album ‘Uphill Highway’ & Shares ‘Outrage Machine’ Single (Featuring Wally Ingram!)

Hot Buttered Rum will release their ninth studio album, Uphill Highway, on November 7. The San Francisco-based outfit previewed the record with the lead single, “Outrage Machine.”

The group employed several special guests across the album’s 10 tracks. Contributions came from Allie Kral, Elliott Peck, Kyle Ledson, Sam Chase, Audio Angel, Leif Karlstrom and Wally Ingram.

“Getting so many Bay Area folks on board was joy upon joy,” Hot Buttered Rum’s Erik Yates said.

Hot Buttered Rum will celebrate the release of Uphill Highway with a hometown concert on November 8 at The Chapel in San Francisco, with T Sisters also set to perform.

“Outrage Machine” arrived with a Josh Clark-directed video. HBR’s Nat Keefe shared insight into the new song.

“When social media came online, I thought it’d be a democratizing force in the world, give everyone a voice, and connect me to interesting people and ideas,” Keefe said. “Then they began turning the knobs to increase engagement, which usually meant sending the most angry, reactive content to the top of the feed.”

We’re very excited to announce the David Nelson Band Rides Again! Campout 4 – a mini festival and camping adventure on Saturday and Sunday September 27 & 28 hosted by Hermitage Music Presents at the beautiful Le Vin Winery mountain estate vineyards in Yorkville, CA. Just 7 miles west of Cloverdale on the Sonoma/Mendocino County line. Fans will enjoy fantastic views overlooking seven mountain ranges. This will be a another special summer closing with the band and an intimate gathering with close friends, family and kids for 2 glorious days camping out or just attending for the day. There is lots of space to roam freely with friends and scenic views in all directions. Enjoy hiking trails, swimming pool (kids only with adults present!) and vendors. Kids get in free and there will be arts & crafts activities for for them.

Musically, the track leans into the band’s signature blend of psych-rock and gospel-infused soul, with a soaring organ and aching vocals that give weight to every lyric. It’s not just a track for today—it’s a meditation for the ages.

Strange Angels, the band’s debut album, is full of such moments: cinematic, soulful, and rooted in truth. But with “Love In A Time Of War,” they’ve found their most poignant expression yet—a song born of one miracle, revived in a time when we need another.
