We’ve been waiting patiently for FOUR years now. Finally, this February 2012 is a leap year… our chance to take control! The ball is in our court so let’s activate: Operation Marriage Proposal.

I’ve been asked many times by anxious women how to propose to their man. What is the best way to get the result they want: ‘YES’. Men are a tricky breed. Sudden, impulsive proposals can confuse them and may trigger a knee jerk reaction like: ‘NO’. The trick is to use stealth, a gradual charm offensive and then round off with a big finale.

Step #1: Plan & time your marriage proposal carefully

Give yourself a few weeks build up to the big night.

Make sure you are well groomed and looking fine all the time. Even if you are putting the bins out, the extra effort may not register at first but subliminally your man will be noticing how hot you are and how lucky he is.

Endurance – Do his laundry and take him to his favourite restaurant… even if that’s McDonalds (endure it) and think of the bigger picture. If he is into sport, take him to see a game or buy him those concert tickets for that dreadful rock band he was into at college. You get the picture: show that you have become the ideal woman without making a big deal about it (as if you were ever anything else!)

Step #2: The fun part: Burlesque classes

Take yourself off for some burlesque classes! We recommend Burlesque Baby. A short course in the art of tease will be an invaluable tool to getting your own way and a lot of fun for you too.

Step #3: The shopping: Nipple tassels & pasties

Invest in some saucy nipple tassels and accessories to go with your new burlesque routines.
We recommend Holloway Smith Noir. They make all my nipple tassels and merkins and can even personalize them for you (below left).

Pick out some sexy lingerie, it just works. For a bit of faux vintage glamour we recommend What Katie Did (below right).

Step #4: The night of the wedding proposal

Take your man to a top notch burlesque club (obviously we recommend Wam Bam Club) …Or stay in and watch a saucy movie. Even better if there are cars and guns as this will make him feel comfortable… more ideal if there are some steamy scenes with scantily clad ladies. This will definitely get him in the mood.

Oh and don’t forget the champagne. Bubbles make the world go round.

THEN POUNCE!

Treat your intended to a private burlesque routine ‘for his eyes only.’ A fan dance or a strip tease will work a treat. By the end, he’ll be head over heels. Then simply whisper in his ears… “Marry me”

“To truly laugh, you must be able to take your pain, and play with it!” -Were some
of Charlie Chaplin’s most famous words and perhaps some of his most autobiographical.

The beauty of Charlie Chaplin’s art was not only the gift of laughter which he gave to the world with his wonderful work, but his ability to explore the troubles of the human heart
and mind and turn them into something beautiful. He was a true artist.

The beloved clown was not only the world’s most creative and influential comic actor, film director and composer but one of the most iconic figures in history and one that stood the test of time. He lived through the 19th, 20th and 21st century and his legacy continues to live today with countless tributes, film sessions and workshops in his honour. Google did this lovely homage to celebrate Chaplin’s 122nd birthday earlier this year:

Chaplin’s attire, the iconic bowler hat, cane, moustache – which Hitler would later imitate – his tight jacket, oversized pants, big shoes and that unforgettable walk were inspired by tramps in England who dressed in suits and ties to appear distinguished. On how the little tramp was born Chaplin said:

“I had no idea of the character. But the moment I was dressed, the clothes and the make-up made me feel the person he was. I began to know him, and by the time I walked onto the stage he was fully born.” – Charlie Chaplin

Peter Jones’ documentary Charlie Chaplin: A Tramp’s Life gives you a fascinating insight into Charlie Chaplin’s life, digging through his humble upbringing in South London to the height of his fame as one of the world’s most famous characters.

David Robinson’s talk Bridging Three centuries is another must watch as it remarks Charlie Chaplin’s importance not only in the world of showbusiness but as a reflective mirror of some of the greatest events that shook our world throughout history. This man lived them all and reflected them in his work.

No other character has been so widely recognized and respected across so many countries and cultures and until today, Charles Chaplin remains one of the most inspiring and fascinating characters.

He brought comedy to new heights. He made of comedy not just a medium for
laughter but a a universal language. A vehicle in which to express not only one’s
views of the world but also a way to exorcise one’s most painful demons, always
with a smile on his face.

Comedy is at the heart of burlesque too so it doesn’t come as a surprise that some

In show business, just like in life, things don’t always go according to plan, so one of
the absolute must haves to succeed in the industry – besides talent – is the ability to
deal with the unexpected and make the best out of the little challenges that life’s naughty
little elves throw at us. After all the show must always go on…

Well over the years various things have happened, CDs breaking, costumes malfunctions and Go-Go boy dancers in my dressing room…

On one of my very first Wam Bam’s at the Cafe de Paris I entered to do my first number and the music for the second one started, which was tricky as it had a dance break for a cod strip in the second number, so a lot of covering!

Lady Alex | Wan Bam’s First Lady Of Cabaret

I guess latest is since I have been doing fire. Swallowing fire is tricky enough, add 6 inch heels and air con to the mix and you have a very difficult proposition.

Swallowing fire in this instance led to the flame slightly being blown across my lip which would normally be hot but quickly fade – that is if you are not wearing MAC lip glitter… heaps of it, which looks gorgeous but is metal in origin and conducts heat like you wouldn’t believe. So even after I had removed the flame from my mouth my lips were still on fire.

Looked very cool, hurt like hell and took all week to heal.

Gemma Parker – Fine Artist & Burlesque Performer

The Chantilly Belles have had various mishaps including; Getting stuck in the audience and almost being unable to get back to the stage to finish the act and in another incident having part of the set fall over on top of us. The audience thought this was part of the act until Rene la Rouge started to wave frantically at the maid to come and rescue her. All was not lost and the act was a suprising success!

Our favourite mishap, if you can call it that, was one we laugh about now but nearly caused us to have a heart attack at the time.

We were invited to perform at Oxford’s O2 Academy, a large venue with a 300 + capacity!
We were very excited and full of nervous energy. After performing our first act we hurried backstage to change for our Never Out Fox the Fox routine. But instead of the 20 minutes we thought we had, there was a knock at the door 10 minutes early asking where we were. We panicked and began to pull our costumes on at full speed. It looked like we might just make it, but unfornatley Rene’s spongilitus flared up right on cue and her ankle swelled to twice it’s normal size. She still had to zip her high heel riding boots up but couldn’t get the zip to fasten.

Cue 5 minutes of high pressure stress, as I tried to force the zip up. Meanwhile the D.J was playing tunes to fill for us and the knocks on the door were becoming more frequent.

On one occasion the door opened to find Rene lying on her back with her leg wedged under my armpit the both of us pulling and gasping, sweat standing out from our brows, while I shouted ‘Push!’. Finally the zip went up, the boot was on and, smiling as if nothing had happened we went on to perform.

We still mention that as the night Rene gave birth to a boot.

As stressful as it was we had such a blast that night!

Tom DeLish – Boylesque performer

I was performing at this heavy metal, rock night and it was full of hardcore manly men in leather jackets and covered in tattoos. Anyway, two girls had performed before me and they absolutely loved it. Then the compere said to the audience: “Now are you ready for some boylesque?” and the audience shouted in reply: “NOOOOO!!!” Well instead of being scared I thought,” I’m gonna make these men love me if it kills them.” I began my “Big Spender” routine and this was the first time I performed my champagne act. I didn’t realize how much champagne fizzes up when u shake it and it exploded Formula 1 style everywhere and covered the ceiling, the walls and the people in the first row. Suffice to say the audience were loving me at the end as they had got a free drink by the end of the act.

Hmmm… mishaps? I probably have one every performance!

One that I particularly remember was Bizarro Burlesque’s Winter 2011 Showgirl Showcase in Charleston, SC. We were performing a rather impromptu finale group number, complete with high-kicks in unison. During one lineup of kicks, my stiletto went flying off my foot, full-force, into the theater-styled seated audience of approximately 300 people. I watched in horror, still dancing, one foot stiletto-clad, the other tip-toed, hoping the heel did not kill someone. A rather large man in the front row narrowly avoided being struck by dodging at the last minute, as the sea of people around him parted. Fortunately, no one was hurt and the audience cheered for the shoe, once grabbed and held high; and for me, one foot shoe-less, as we dancers held back both laughter and fear.

Ruby Deshabille | Burlesque Artiste and Vintage/Retro Model

In my Cupid’s Blind Date act I invite three gentlemen onstage as potential suitors to help me undress. And the third guy in my line up who was supposed to UNDO my corset laces managed to tie them in an infinite knot instead. There was absolutely no way of getting out of the corset onstage, I was well and truly knotted in!

When things like this happen, if you can’t cover it up in a subtle way then I think the only way round it is to make a joke of it. The audience is there to be entertained after all! Also, it shows the audience that you are human after all and even glamorous showgirls have wardrobe malfunctions too!

Oh poor old Mrs Henderson! Imagine being in your 70s, rich, newly widowed
and with more money and time on your hands than you’d ever wished for… So
what do you do to fill up all those lonely hours and add a little spice back into
your life..?

Buy a theatre in London’s West End and open up a cabaret of course!
[Our kind of lady... : )]

If you are a lover of burlesque, theatre and London town you just can’t miss
this fantastic movie about the fascinating history of London’s Windmill Theatre.
Based on a true story - Mrs Laura Henderson and Mr Vivian van Damm did exist
and lived in London during the war - the movie is not only a hilarious comedy full
of brilliant, witty and well written lines but also a moving story recorded in the history
of London’s magical West End.

Did you know that the Windmill Theatre was the first venue ever to show naked
performers on stage? “Nude… but never rude”. Their nude performances were
highly artistic, done in the style of Tableaux Vivants, showing glamorous nude
females inspired by the Folies Bergères and Moulin Rouge in Paris.

The Windmill Theatre was also the only theatre that remained open during the
war, even at the height of the Blitz. Way to keep spirits up hey?

Their famous slogan was: “We never closed” and it was often hilariously modified to:
“We never clothed”.

A truly enjoyable movie and a must watch for all burlesque, comedy, history and
theatre fans. Here is the trailer:

Our favourite comic villainess is a rather popular choice when it comes to looking for
burlesque inspiration. Pah! to Batman… who we all secretly loved was darling Harley!

Aw poor Harley! So charming and sweet. She is as dangerous and crazy
as she is sexy and downright hilarious. She always remained loyal and oh
so in love with the evil and heartless joker, blinded by her mad attraction

If you are *coulrophobic you won’t be loving this post, but if you, like us, happen to
loooove clowns you are in for a burlesque treat…

Clowns are enigmatic magical characters. Their history dates back as early as the Fifth dynasty of Egypt, around 2400 BCE.

Unlike court jesters, clowns have always served a socio-religious and psychological role. Traditionally, the role of priest and that of the clown were held by the same person.
Clowning is one of the world’s most historical performances and it is still a prominent form
of entertainment across the world. Present in many cultures, the examples of historical
clowns in both performance and art are still strong and form part of our cultural heritage.

Clowns still light up the center stages of many venues and they are still the source of inspiration for writers, artists, photographers, performers and designers alike.

Who can forget “Pennywise the Dancing Clown”, Stephen King’s sadistic clown in the 90’s hit horror movie inspired by the book “It”, the legendary Pierrot which is often inspiration of fashion designers on the catwalk or Edward Hopper’s “Soir Bleu”’; a haunting painting depicting a clown dressed in full gear, smoking a cigarette in a regular mundane day scene in a cafe in Paris.

The pantomimus in ancient Greece, the Lazzi of Commedia dell’Arte, bouffons, court jesters, as well as the French mime tradition all form part of the history of clowning. Outside Europe, clown-like figures are present in Japanese Kabuki theatre and the North American native shamans have no doubt had an influence in what we know today as the clown in the Western world.

The enigmatic image of the clown holds a certain mystery and magic about it; there are funny clowns, scary clowns, cute clowns, sad clowns, mysterious clowns, fashionable clowns, and now thanks to the wonderful world of burlesque, we have glamorous burlesque clowns!
