That's too bad because I've been using that service for at least 6 years. Anyways, today marks the end of wAntAn productions. No big speeches or anything because I'm not going to stop blogging (not that I blog much anyway but I digress).

From now on, wAntAn productions lives on (in spirit) in my new blog at jon.peachjon.com.

Please do visit the new site. wAntAn productions will remain as it is but I don't expect the comments system to continue working once Blogger stops supporting the FTP service, or maybe it will. Unfortunately, since I've never bothered to try the other famous char siew places I can't provide any comparisons.

The beat up signage

Soo Kee is located on Jalan Ampang, quite nearby Ampang Point (refer to the map below). If you're coming from KLCC towards Ampang Point, there's a flyover right before Ampang Point. Don't go up the flyover, instead take the U-turn beneath it. Soo Kee will be on your left shortly.

Without a doubt the best Char Siew in Ampang

The char siew of course is the star of the show. Its got its crispy bits, its got its lean bits and its got its terrific melt in your mouth fat bits. Seriously now, how many char siew places you know have melt in your mouth texture? I'm thinking not that many.

Some pretty good smooth white chicken

Despite what it may look like from the food in this review, this place is more than just a char siew and various cut meat place. Anyways a big screw you (aka the sanitised version of fuck you) to Swensens SS2.

We were there this evening for an earthquake (you know, the 8 scoop ice cream thing) and dinner. First thing we noticed, many of the waiters were pretty young. Like Form 3 young.

Ordered an earthquake, 2 glasses of plain water and a single serving of macaroni and cheese (on weekdays the mac and cheese comes with a complimentary drink and soup) from one of the girl waitresses.

There were a bunch of kids sitting next to our table eating like there was no tomorrow. No parents around. They were also chatting with some of the staff throughout their meal. It's obvious that they are friends with some of the waiters. Their food just kept on coming and coming. Meal after meal, ice-cream after ice-cream. Maybe they're getting some major discounts or something. Pretty curious about that.

So anyways a short wait later our earthquake came. Of course with my daughter around ice-cream is bound to be a messy affair. No serviettes provided. Had to ask one of the girl waitresses (the same one who took our order) to bring some. The girl disappeared into the kitchen and reappeared like 5 minutes later.

I happened to see her coming out from the kitchen and she noticed me looking at her. That triggered her short term memory so she picked up a couple of tissues from the counter and gave it to us. I can close one eye on this... no big deal.

I don't know about you but after I have some ice-cream (in our case 8 scoops worth) I like to wash it down with some water. Remember we did order 2 glasses of plain water earlier. That never came so we asked the waitress for them. 5 minutes later no water in sight, though many glasses of water were served to other tables.

Feeling a little pissed now so we asked one of the guys in red shirt (I assume this dude is the captain or manager, the other waiters were in white shirts) for our water. As you would expect it never came.

At this point in time, it's been over half an hour and aside from the earthquake nothing else came. Lost my mood for the mac and cheese so I asked a white shirt to cancel it they haven't started making it. As soon as I'm done talking to that dude he goes over to the table next to mine (the one with the ravenous kids) and starts chatting. Fuck you kid!

So anyways I gave him some time and when it was obvious that there was not going to be an end in sight to his chatting I stood up and made my way to the counter to cancel the order personally.

The kid in the white shirt quickly followed me to the counter. He was probably afraid that I would lodge a complaint against him or something. You know what he told me at the counter? He said "they are in the process of making your mac and cheese".

Fuck you kid, don't bullshit me. You left your friend's table and went straight to the counter. At which point in time did you have the time to ask anyone about the order's status? Do you think I'm dumb?

So despite his obvious bullshit, I didn't give him a hard time. I just insisted on canceling my mac and cheese. Of course, kids being kids love to have the final word so he retorted "Then I can have a free meal!". Erm... yeah sure whatever dude.

So in conclusion, a big fuck you to Swensens and all the incompetent assholes you hired (is it even legal to hire them in the first place?). I used to like you.

Fish Ball Mee KNL Restaurant

In my last blog post I spoke about the fish ball noodles at Restoran Okay at SS2 and I promised to follow up shortly with the location of the new branch that's being run by the original owner.

I have to apologise as work kept me really really busy hence the delayed publishing of this blog post. Many people are really nostalgic about this place and so it's with delight that I announce that the fishball place has been reborn somewhat as a small stall in SS2.

The location is at Restoran Okay in SS2 at the opposite end of the same row of shops which Kayu Nasi Kandar is at.

Jalan SS 2/10

As it's a small stall they don't quite sell the breadth of the varieties that they used to sell at their original stall. Also, the stall is currently being manned (I think) by the original owner's sister and not the original owner himself.

So what can you get here? There are the noodle of course. You can accompany your noodles with fishballs, taufu pok and some braised pork.

Personally I very much prefer the dry version of the noodles and I suspect most people will too. I have very good memories of the food at the original Yap Ah Shak place and I must say the SS2 branch is just as good as I remember.

The standout good food IMHO isn't the fish balls though, it's the taufu pok which is soaked in the braised pork gravy. If you're a fan of the taufu pok in BKTs I think you'll love this too.

So where did the original Yap Ah Shak place go to? From what I gather, they've been closed for at least 3 years. Stay tuned to wAntAn productions for the answer because I recently found them!

Special mention also goes to the chee cheong fun stall at the same place. Pretty good and reasonably cheap.

The Star's article on this place.

Hing Ho's Full Moon Party @ Coca Cabana

Regular readers will know I have a daughter named Kit Yi. This time around he also barbecued a whole lamb. He couldn't get a good lamb for the party due to everyone wanting one for all the Raya and Deepavali celebrations going on all around. In fact he had to bribe one of the caterers to sell the one we got to him.

But truly the star dish of the night are the lamb chops. I did all the Googling I could with all the keywords I could think of and did not come up with a single mention of this place. Too bad because this stall deserves better.

These days, people in the pan mee business are just trying to out-gimmick the competition, case in point these two (and another Puchong travesty called Golden Egg Noodle). I love it that there are so many varieties to the humble pan mee but I think sometimes we forget that a simple old school original style pan mee can be so good.

The Stall

If you know where Fatty Bak Kut Teh on Old Klang Road is then you've found the pan mee stall. If you don't it's basically on the opposite side of the road from the Taman Desa Maybank.

Soup Pan Mee

This is it. Absolutely no gimmicks. It's your plain as vanilla back to origins pan mee with pork, mushrooms, vegetables and anchovies. The soup is sweet, the pan mee is smooth and that's all you need for a good, filling and fulfilling dinner.

Note: This is not my favourite pan mee stall but it's an honest to goodness good pan mee stall that deserves more attention.

Tong Sui

You can get the "tong sui" from the same stall.

View wAntAn productions - Old Klang Road in a larger map

Gerai Thong Kee @ Medan Selera PJ Old Town

If you were born in the 80s (or before) and lived near or in PJ then I'm pretty sure you would know where the Medan Selera in PJ Old Town is. This place is an institution that has withstood the test of time. I'm amazed that this place still exists and that it looks essentially the same as it did 20 years ago.

Personally I don't have any memories of the specific stalls that I frequented as a kid but I have been going back to this place recently for this one stall that sells one hell of a fried "sang meen". This stall is stall #47, Gerai Thong Kee.

About as old school as it gets here in KL.

Fried "sang meen"

So what's "sang meen"? You know the noodle you get with wantan noodles? That's the one... maybe :) I don't know for sure but they are both very similar. However I swear "sang meen" usually has a very eggy taste to it while your typical wantan noodles do not.

This picture doesn't do the dish any justice. This stall serves the best fried "sang meen" I have ever eaten (of course, if you know any better I would love to hear from you). I'm not sure how to describe it but the feeling of eating something fried, that looks dry but is actually a little wet and has an eggy aftertaste with lots of crunchy vegetables is quite unbeatable.

Pork Satay

There's a satay stall nearby that sells pork satay. The pork satay rocks as well. I can't figure out why business isn't better for the satay stall.

Aside from that, the Medan Selera is also famous for it's ais kacang drinks (though I personally have not tried them recently). If it's your first time there you might also be surprised to find that food court also has Indian and Malay tenants... very muhibbah.

View wAntAn productions - PJ Old Town At 3pm, most places are closed only to reopen in the evening. We were in the Hartamas area searching for some bento. No luck, all closed so I drove around a little bit and found this place.

Babu Taiwan Cuisine. If not for the word Taiwan in it's name one would probably think it's an Indian restaurant (I've met a few Babus). As far as I can tell this place is 100% Taiwanese. I also kinda suspect that the waitress/only person in the shop front is Taiwanese since she doesn't speak Cantonese (very un-KL like).

My dear ST's new hairstyle and Kit Yi being uncooperative. I think it's the greatest thing that has come out of Taiwan. Needless to say I enjoyed this very much. It would have been even better if they did flavours. Peppermint Pearl Milk Tea is the bestest drink ever!

Pork Chop Set Lunch (RM10.90)

ST had this. Beef Noodles. I think Babu's beef noodles are pretty good. The beef especially was very well done The soup is good in the sense that it doesn't overpower the beef and the ramen type noodles are a great complement to the whole dish. I also like the salted vegetables that came along with the noodles.

Foodies:

Cari Makan in PJ: Babu Taiwan Cuisine @ Desa Sri Hartamas
Babu Taiwan Restaurant - Desa Sri Hartamas
Food review: Babu Taiwanese restaurant | sooyindotcom

View wAntAn productions - Sri Hartamas in a larger map

KFC's Cheezy Chickaroni

KFC does it again. After all it's but a small village. However one of the things that's most talked about is the pau place. I personally did not try any of the paus here but I heard from a local that they have become so commercialised that they compromised on their quality so they aren't nearly as good as they used to be.

The paus aren't exactly expensive though (if you're from KL), so if you're in the area you should probably check them out. Ocen Seafood restaurant is the place to be. It was a rather small event and frankly speaking I don't think there was too much to do but kudos to the organisers anyway. I spent a good hour or two at Daicon. Keep it up. type='text'>Hung Kee @ Jalan Loke Yew for the Sweet and Sour Pork

I'm not sure if many people know this but Hung Kee serves a lot more than just wantan noodles. In fact they are a proper restaurant and you can order both noodles and an assortment of dishes accompanied by rice. There are 2 dishes in particular that I think are standout in Hung Kee. One is their fish head dish and the other is this; the humble Sweet and Sour Pork

Can't have dinner without a tofu dish for Kit Yi.

One of the best sweet and sour pork dishes in town. Not consistently good but when it is, the meat is crunchy and I think that makes a great sweet and sour pork.

Dumplings. It didn't taste right eaten with rice. Order this only when you're having wantan noodles :)

I always enjoy eating here but the price can be quite a killer. This dinner cost me about RM40 and there were only 2 of us eating (excluding Kit Yi).

More foodies:

Hung Kee Wanton Mee @ Jalan Loke Yew

Jules Eating Guide to Malaysia: Kon Loh Mee @ Hung Kee, Loke Yew (KL)

Hung Kee, Jalan Loke Yew - Wantan Mee - A Whiff of Lemongrass

Ramly Burger Review - Ana Burger @ Kemensah Heights

My favourite food blogger of all time wrote about this place a few weeks back and me being a big big fan of the humble Ramly Burger had to try this out.

This burger stall is located in the middle of nowhere. They set it up along a lonely road in a quiet housing estate behind the National Zoo. There are no other shops in the area and most shocking of all, there's no 7-11 in sight! How can this possibly be? A Ramly burger stall without an accompanying 7-11 stall?!!! Unthinkable. Where else would I get my bottle of Coke from?

Anyway I digress. The thing about Ramly burgers are that they all use the same basic ingredients (the meat in particular comes from the same supplier; Ramly of course). They all have more or less the same basic way of cooking the burgers but I've tasted Ramly burgers ranging from the absolutely terrible to the very good. It's all in the execution and the special ingredients.

Note: avoid all Ramly burgers sold at petrol stations and hypermarkets unless you enjoy eating cardboard.

Note: avoid all Ramly burgers made by foreigners. I tried this once and was traumatised for weeks.

The humble Burger Ayam Special (chicken patty wrapped with a piece of fried egg, RM3.00)

A slice of green apple

So this little stall's gimmick is the green apple and some special burgers like the Burger Kawen (sic) and the Burger Dingdong (which is a benjo with meat, instead of the wrapped egg thing).

Taste wise the burger is in the good range of Burger Ramlys. You know what to expect. The usual sauce smothered patty with a bunch of shredded vegetables. Nothing too special actually. Not as good as my favourite Ramly burger stall which I'll probably review one of these days.

This place is well worth a try if you live nearby. Otherwise I wouldn't recommend it.

foodie reviews

masak-masak: Green Patty Love - Ana Burger @ Kemensah Heights, Kuala Lumpur

Affordable Western @ Original Charcoal BBQ Uncle R, Sri Petaling

One night I found myself in Seri Petaling looking for something to eat. We had wanted to look for this "yau char kwai" place (specifically we wanted to try the one where they serve with ice cream) but it seems like the place has closed down and was taken over by one of those shady looking cyber cafes. Note to self: novelty restaurants are bad business. Anyway I ended up driving around aimlessly and happened to come across this place.

We spotted this restaurant with a grill right outside of it. They pasted a bunch of placards on their entrance advertising their dishes. The prices were quite decent so I decided to give it a try. After all everyone needs a decent western meal once in a while :)

Note: don't trust me on the price for this review. I forgot to take the receipt with me when I left.

Mushroom soup

I can't resist having soup in a western restaurant. Uncle R's menu is a little limited. If I remember correctly the one and only soup they serve is mushroom soup. No complaints from me though... I love mushroom soup. However, the soup isn't all that great. I'm thinking it's probably Campbell's?

Large orange juice (Kit Yi's bottle is placed on the left for comparison purposes)

They had a special for orange juice that day (RM5.50 if I remember correctly). Serving is standard 'tai tai bui' size. Not too shabby.

Ice Cream with Wafer (3 scoops!)

Kit Yi polishing off the Ice Cream

Didn't try this but it looked like Kit Yi loved it :)

Mixed Grill

And here's my dinner for the night. Uncle R's mixed grill (RM19.90) consisting of a piece of succulent lamb, a piece of tender Australian beef and a piece of flattened chicken chop. I must say that whatever Uncle R is using to marinate his meat, it's really really good. You can taste the sweetness in the juicy meat when you bite into it. The chicken I think was especially good. Also, since it's all charcoal grilled the food is especially tasty. I'm not a fan of the sauce he used though... too salty for my tastes.

As we were having our meal the very friendly Uncle R sat down on our table and we chatted a little bit. Uncle R is actually Ronnie Wong. Previously an agency manager in MAA insurance (wow!). The restaurant has been in operation for over 2 years. Uncle Ronnie used to cook for his church and it's there where he perfected his recipes. After encouragement from his church mates, he decided to go into the food business.

He did share a little bit about his secret sauce recipe which I don't think is right for me to reveal here. Try this place out. If you like it then have a chat with Uncle Ronnie about it. He's very very friendly and approachable.

He also stressed that his prices were very low and that his food is value for money. I can't disagree for the most part. Being a former insurance man he couldn't resist the urge to hard sell his "sang har" prawns which I'm definitely going to try the next time I'm here (which may be quite soon). It seems also that his seafood mixed grill is superb value for money.

Highly recommended for a very affordable western meal in a comfortable air conditioned environment. Uncle R's prices aren't much (if any) higher than those western food stalls in the Chinese kopitiam/food courts. Just don't expect the food to be on par with the high class restaurants.

Foodies:

jennifer's wonderworld: Uncle R -- a home feel steak house

Yumi's Place : Uncle R @ Sri Petaling

All You Can Eat Pasta @ Secret of Louisiana, Plaza Kelana Jaya

"All you can eat pasta for RM12.90"... I've been hearing these words for many weeks. Why? Because it's become a routine for ST and her colleagues to eat here every other week. So where's this wonderful magical place that offers such a great deal and what's the catch?

The answers in short are; "Secret of Louisiana" and not much.

ST and Kit Yi

I've been wanting to come here for some time simply because I find it difficult to believe that there's such an offer. Hehehe... seriously how to they make a profit with this?

Now how does this offer work? Simple, there are 6 different choices of pasta that you can pick (though I hear #6 is merely the vegetarian version of #5). You can order from those 6 choices as many times as you can eat them in succession. That is to say, finish one pasta, order another. Simple! Now they also serve you a cup of tea and a scoop of ice cream when you are done with your meal (none of which are refillable of course). Sounds like a good deal? It is.

Tea

Chicken Smoked Sausage Pasta

Cabonara Chicken Pasta

Beef Bolognese Pasta

Chicken Stir Fried Spaghetti

Single Scoop Ice Cream

We didn't try every variety. Since ST had been there several times she recommended some of the better ones. Personally I stopped after pasta #3.

So was the pasta any good? Well I'd say they were decent. Don't expect too much for RM12.90. They are all very basic dishes but for the price you pay there's no reason to complain. My personal favourite (as it usually is) is the pasta carbonara. Well worth trying out.

I think I might come back some time later to try their actual menu (Cajun food!). Oh and I noticed their set lunches are very decently priced as well so that's probably worth checking out.

Getting here is a little tricky. Basically you need to be on the LDP in the Kelana Jaya area heading towards Damansara. You will see the Customs building on your right. Immediately after that you need to make a left turn before the now defunct Kelana Seafood Center. It's a very small turning, blink and you'll definitely miss it.

More foodies:

Eat Drink KL: Secret of Louisiana
D Daily Dose: Secret of Louisiana

Official website (seems kinda outdated?):
Secret of Louisiana

It be a boy

There be balls!

Mother's Day Celebration at Waterlily Cafe, Puchong

This post is a little old :)

It was Mother's Day 2 weeks back. Joe picked a juicer for mom and dad picked Waterlily Cafe for dinner. It was not my first visit to Waterlily. I was there some years back with ST and we didn't really like the food at that time. But we decided to give it a try anyway since the other family members have never been there.

Cendol Ice Blended

Mojitas!

Some cucumbery drink.

This time around the food was pretty decent. Happy birthday my darling wife. I spent many days thinking of where to bring her for dinner but neither one of us could come to a conclusion so we decided to just wing it. We went to One Utama for some shopping (a little more about that later) and to have dinner there after that.

We went over to the information counter, picked up a brochure and browsed over to the restaurants section. Nothing really piqued our interests so we decided to leave the decision till it was time to eat.

When dinner time came, we somehow ended up at Sushi Zanmai. I hesitated a little. Sushi Zanmai looked like a glorified Sushi King. Not the kind of place I wanted to bring my wife for her birthday dinner. Alas, we didn't have anyplace better to go so in we went.

Kit Yi and ST, gone are the days where we can go out as just a couple :)

Wet Tissue RM0.20

Yes, wet tissues are 20 cents each. Comes with the usual stuff; some enoki mushrooms, a single prawn and one of those red and white naruto thingamagigs.

Unadon (eel rice bowl) RM15.80

Pretty decent bowl of teriyaki laced eel with rice. ST had a craving for this and I think she was satisfied.

Fruit Rainbow Roll RM12.80

Special for the day. I wouldn't order this again. It's basically sushi with fruit instead of raw fish. Comes with thin slices of strawberry, peach and one other green coloured fruit (don't remember what it was). They had some crunchy stuff in the middle. Felt a little like eating popiah. The fruits weren't particularly sweet so the whole sushi felt really flat.

Sukiyaki RM15.80

The sukiyaki was damned good. I liked the fact that it came with slices of raw beef so that you can play shabu-shabu with it (three dips is all it takes). The soup was full stuff I liked; mostly enoki mushrooms and an assortment of vegetables. It came with a raw egg which you could cook however you liked. Also the soy sauce soup base was pretty sweet. Best of all were the beef slices which had a real beefy kick to it.

a closer look at the Sukiyaki

So if anyone wondered what I bought my wife for her birthday, it was some cosmetic products. At the cosmetics counter I heard my wife said it was "bak gei man" (hundred plus in Cantonese) and I thought that was a decent price for a gift so I immediately offered to pay for it. She added some other cosmetics stuff which was "sam bak gei man" (three hundred plus), which I thought was still within reason.

At the cashier, I made a startling discovery. I misheard ST, she didn't say "bak gei man" instead it was "bat bak gei man"!!! Ouch! Don't know Cantonese? It means eight hundred plus! Shock!!! Horror!!!. Oh well, as long as she's happy. The second pregnancy has been hard on her complexion. I hope those Estee Lauder stuff really work.

PPS has gone down the drain

Wow... PPS has really gone down the drain hasn't it? The ads were expected but really, personal attacks (see screen shot portion in red box)? I cannot for a moment understand why Aiz sold PPS off to that guy. If I had known it was for sale I would have bought it (or at least tried to). In fact I'm pretty sure if the PPS sale was announced to the public that lots of better people would offer to run it.

That said, I'm probably going to tolerate PPS for the moment as there's simply no better alternative. Really, dude... PPS should remain neutral. You can do all the shit slinging in your own blog and ping it to PPS.
