new Games Workshop release : Realm of Battle Gaming Board extensions

Tabletop Gaming Boards don't come much better or bigger now that the Citadel battle ground has been given extensions that can make it 8 ft x 4 ft !

I found the Realm of Battle gaming board a touch on the expensive side but it's such good quality that it's difficult to imagine being able to produce a better homemade diy board.

One thing that GW's gaming table does really well is the hills. Your troops can actually move up and down them without falling over ! Most homemade boards have stepped hills or (worse) hills that are smooth but too steep and not navigable for anything other than a metal behemoth on a monster base.

These extensions mean you have a few more customisation options and the board is better sized for 3000+ pt battles (or even 2000pt battles if you're deploying "horde" armies)

Warriors of Chaos Dragon Ogre Tactica by darthweasel

An excellent Warhammer Fantasy Battle tactics article from darthweasel, one of the Battle Reporter forum's most respected members.

The Warriors of Chaos are an interesting army. They have quite limited range, with only the Hellcannon, Marauder Horsemen armed with throwing axes or javelins, or magic able to do damage outside of close combat. This makes it imperative for the Warriors of Chaos to quickly come to grips with the enemy.

Unfortunately, they are also hampered by being among the slowest armies. Their cavalry is equal only to the slowest of enemies and some armies move 1-2” quicker in the Cavalry wing. Meanwhile, the infantry is slower than the various Elf armies, slower than the Ogres and Skaven, and faster only than the Dwarf army

This means the Warriors of Chaos, an army for whom speed is at a premium, are at best an average speed army. As a result, armies with excellent shooting capabilities can often pick apart the elite Chaos Knights and Chaos Warriors before they can come to grips with the enemy. How to deal with this problem?

How about a unit with M7, T4, and W4? Enter the Dragon…Ogres.

They rely primarily on their speed and toughness to survive. Their combined armour save is 4+, but this will often be reduced to 6+ or even completely negated by many weapons that will shoot at them such as cannons, repeater bolt throwers, and other artillery.

At the same time, their 4 wounds apiece means they have to be shot a lot to keep them from reaching their goal which will generally be done in 2-3 turns at most.

With a base S5 and 3 attacks apiece, they will normally hit 50% of the time and wound at much higher rates. So they are a potent force the opponent must respect.

The downside is clear; their high cost of 65 points apiece means with no upgrades, 3 of them cost 195 points, just 5 points left than a unit of 5 Knights with no upgrades.

So lets compare the 2 units.

Their speed is even, their strength and toughness are even, the Ogres have the advantage in wounds and the Knights have the advantage in attacks (5 Knights with 2 attacks = 10, plus 5 Horse attacks at lower WS and S, 3 Dragon Ogres with 3 Attacks have 9 attacks). Both cause Fear, the Knights have a vastly superior Armor Save and the Ogres are immune to Lightning-based attacks.

Clearly, for similar points they have similar capabilities. The Knights have more possible upgrades, which can be a tremendous advantage as the addition of a War banner gives the +2 to the Combat Resolution, an option the Dragon Ogres do not have.

By contrast, the Dragon ogres have one giant advantage over the Knights. Whereas every wound done to a base 5 man unit of Knights reduces their effectiveness by slightly over 20% (Unit Strength), the Dragon Ogres do not begin losing effectiveness until they have taken 4 wounds.

Do not underestimate the importance of this. With LD8 and the Will of Chaos, the Dragon Ogres pretty much have to be killed to the last Ogre. With their re-rolls for failed panic tests, they will pass a whopping 89% of their tests.

This means they are highly effective in fulfilling dual roles.

First, their imposing presence and death-dealing capabilities will draw a tremendous amount of attention from your opponents. They will concentrate firepower and magic on them. Now, it might seem silly to use 195 points (or more if you upgrade them) as target presence. But they can withstand an awful lot of firepower and still be a threat when they get to their target.

Additionally, it will allow you to bring your game-winning units, say Chaos Knights, into the positions they need to be in to get off their lethal charges.

Second, the combination of 4 wounds apiece and M7 means you are likely to get at least a couple of them across the field. 3, 6, or even 9 S5 attacks can take out a lot of gun lines or, given Great Weapons, perhaps even a monster or two.

Sure, the cost is high, but as a Special choice, you can still fit in a unit of knights and a unit of Chosen if that is your chosen configuration…or even 2 units of Knights, and that is at less than 2000 points.

Consider this; you take 2 units of knights with full command and Mark of khorne and a unit of Dragon Ogres with Great Weapons you have spent 791 points. Throw in a Sorcerer with a couple Dispel Scrolls for your general and you are still under 1000 points which you can use for core units, Exalted heroes, and whatever your little heart desires.

That is a small, compact, hard-hitting force that can move quickly to deal with any threat the opponent can offer.

Additionally, who do they come after? If they divide their fire among your 3 Special unit choices, you already have achieved an advantage through the principle of divide and conquer. If they concentrate on one unit of Knights, they leave the other unit and the Dragon Ogres free to attack their chosen targets. If they choose to target the Dragon Ogres, they leave 2 units of Knights unmolested and 2 fresh units of Knights can do tremendous damage to any battle line.

By including Dragon ogres, you force your opponent to make a difficult decision, and any decision they make is only good for you.

Games Workshop Brigade boxed sets for Warhammer Fantasy Battle - a bargain !

Good combinations of Warhammer Fantasy units and around 30% off The Empire Brigade and Orcs & Goblin Brigade miniatures.

I'm usually dubious about special "deals" believing they are usually more "special" for the seller than the buyer !

Anyway, I have done the maths and the new Empire and Orcs and Goblins Brigade Boxes are actually a very good bargain (see below). They are also full of the right kind of units that everyone is likely to use for large and small scale battles.

If you bought the Empire miniatures individually they would cost you (In UK GBP) £135.95, the Empire Brigade is £97.75 which is almost 30% less.

It's the same with the Orcs and Goblins Brigade, although you actually save a little bit more. The price drops from £136.95 to £97.85.

Unfortunately, there is a catch; the Brigades are limited in stock. I hope this is just Games Workshop testing the waters and that these boxed sets will become a permanent feature in the stores. I reckon GW are onto a winner with these Brigades and I really, really hope they bring them out for all the other armies because I have completed my Empire and O&G miniature collections :(

Orc and Goblin Artillery Tactics

"'What is the most important unit in a greenskin army?' Well, it’s the artillery units. Doom Divers, Spear Chukkas, and even Rock Lobbas. But this isn’t a unit, its several different units. Yes that is true, but together they are the most important aspect in a greenskin army. If you hold on I’ll explain.

When you fight against greenskin armies, what do you generally face? Lots of models, units, and just well a mob of green. How do you deal with this mob? Well your gonna be up against orcs with a toughness of 4, measly goblins with crazed fanatics, several units of fast cavalry. That’s pretty much a staple of all greenskin armies, so how do you beat these armies? Cause panic/terror tests and have units that strength 4 models can not hurt or beat. Also you need a sacrificial unit or two to “pop” fanatics out of night gobbo units. So lets see here, basic blocks of infantry are not going to cut it. They might win against gobbo’s, but anything that can shake a stick wins against gobbos. But against big blocks of orcs, it’s a different matter. You need elite troops, heavy cavalry, or monsters.

Elite troops and heavy cavalry give orcs nightmares
since they hit hard enough to do a good number of wounds against toughness 4 and the orcs have a hard time wounding in return. Monsters that cause terror are wonderful against greenskins since they hit hard, are hard to hurt, and make the enemy take terror tests with low leadership. Since most greenskin units are quite large, its hard to make then take panic tests from shooting, so spells or weapons which force panic tests also work well.

Hmmm, as a greenskin, those units make me almost wet myself in battle. Nasty fighting characters in large units helps, but against strength 5 or 6 hits, even they fall quite a bit. Artillery to the rescue. Artillery provides what the rest of the army lacks, high strength, multiple wounds, ignoring armor save attacks. Whats even better, well for 300 pts you get 2 doom diver, 2 spear chukkas, and a rock lobba. Personally I prefer 2 doom divers and 4 spear chukkas for 300 pts. So now we have an answer to monsters and knights and elite expensive infantry.

Where do I place my artillery?

Well, you want to be able to shoot every turn of course and not lose your artillery. So hills are always nice, and the edge of woods as well. I mean if the enemy spends a lot of effort shooting at 35 pts spear chukkas, well I really don’t care since I have several more, and 35 pts is almost a waste to shoot at. One trick I have used is to place these guys far in the rear of my army behind my units. You have 48” to 60” range, so they can be placed a long way from the enemy. I place them in the gaps so they can see just a sliver of the enemy or his large targets. All you need is a small line of sight, so the 1” in-between your own units works, but when you do this, it’s a good idea to make sure he has large targets as well or something on a hill so you can always shoot at something worth while.

What do I shoot at?

Well, what cant your blocks of infantry handle? Doom Divers are great for knights and elite infantry since D6 strength 5 hits cause a hurting to these often small and expensive units. Bolt throwers should shoot at high toughness, multiple wound models, such as dragons, steam tanks, hydras, or if you can a flank shot at knights. Now we are green and everything counts in numbers, so if you want to be sure to put a dent in the enemy’s chaos knights, shoot both doom divers at it, 2d6 str 5 hits that ignore armor should eliminate that threat. I cant tell you how many times my doom divers have made up for their pts by sending mad goblins with wings crashing into knights. Also elite infantry such as High Elf Swordmasters or Chaos warriors are good targets.

Bolt throwers are wonderful against monsters. Four bolts to the face of any dragon will keep him hiding quite a while. Sending multiple bolts at stegadons also does wonders for greenskin morale. What happens when I cant shoot at monsters or knights in the flank? Take a shot a lone characters, you have a 19% chance killing a 2 wound hero at short range and about 9% at long range. Again several bolts are better than one. Now if your only targets are units equivalent to rat slaves or other gobbos, move your machine to shoot at something tasty for the next round. Its hard to even justify picking up the dice to shoot at rat slaves.

How do I protect my artillery?

Your general will probably move down the field with the main bulk of the army leaving these guys by themselves. Fast cavalry protect war machines quite well. They can redirect charges and slow down the enemy from eating your war machines. Lets face it, a gobbo crew will win a combat…never, so be prepared to high tail it in a combat. Which leads to my next point, set up your machines so that they cannot be overrun into. Try to make it where your opponent has to spend a turn setting up a charge instead of machine hopping.

It has been my experience, that my 300 pts of artillery has always made up its points and had won quite a few battle for me as well. So after reading this article, I hope as a greenskin general you will never leave on a WAAAGH with out a handy selection of artillery. No go and eat some ‘umies."

I've been adding all the best Warhammer Fantasy blogs and websites that I can find to the Battle Reporter blogroll (see right, scroll down a bit)

We now have 25 Warhammer blogs in the blogroll. Hopefully, I'll be able to make this site a bit of a "one stop shop" so you can see all the recent interesting Fantasy Battle updates from one place.

The sites are predominantly Warhammer Fantasy sites although some of them cover other Games Workshop products, mainly 40k, Lord of the Rings and Mordheim.

Golden Demon Award Winners Games Workshop Games Day 2009 UK

Warhammer Fantasy Battle miniatures featured strongly in the painting / modelling competition. Including some very expertly modelled conversions / dioramas

Here are a couple of the winners, both getting a Gold:-

The Empire Marksman ("Clock Maker") by the awesone Ben Jarvis won overall first place getting the Slayer Sword and gold for the single miniature.

The brilliant Orc Warboss and Empire Knight diorama by Seb Perbet won gold in the open category. It must have been a close fight off for that Games Workshop Slayer Sword because all of these entries are truly awe-inspiring.

Forest Goblin all Metal Miniatures Warhammer Army

A keen Warhammer Fantasy gamer has bought a whole metal miniature forest goblin Warhammer Battle army (93 minis) on eBay for $183.50 ! All the miniatures are now out of production at Games Workshop !!

What a bargain. It included:-

54 Forest Goblin Warriors armed with Hand weapon and shield. This includes command models.

20 Forest Goblin/Goblin Archers

15 Giant Spiders

Giant Spider Riders (You can easily use some of the above warriors for riders as well, they fit wondefully)

Games Workshop have written a nice intro to the Warhammer Fantasy Battle for Skull Pass set for people new to the game who are are not sure where to begin.

The Battle for Skull Pass boxed set is probably the easiest and best way to start getting involved with the game of Warhammer Fantasy Battle. It includes two armies (Dwarfs and Goblins) and all the basic rules, paints and accessories that you need to start your Warhammer hobby.

New Warhammer Forum Warfare Game

Lots of Fantasy Battle Reporter forum updates to report:-

First of all, thanks for all the recent support and new joiners.

We recently upgraded the forum to version 3 of phpBB. In a nutshell this means there's lots more we can do to have fun :) and we reckon we're going to be the best Warhammer forum on the internet (note: we've always been the friendliest !)

1) Forum Warfare !

First off, we're starting a forum warfare game. You decide which race to support, you post new threads or add to existing ones for gold crowns which you can spend in the forum shop to buy allegiance to your army of choice and then participate in the intra-forum war!

There will be various "War Games" (details still being worked on) and the more you post the better prepared you will be to play a winning part.

We're planning to add mounts, weapons, armour and magic items to the shop. Here's the intro:-

2) The Arcade

We have over 30 browser based arcade games in the forum for members (you just need to join and make one post, ie. say hello in the Intro thread for a gold crown) and you can join in the high score quest. You pay 1 gold crown per game and if you post a high score you earn all the gold crowns that were paid on that game since the last high score was posted.

BilboBaggins himself is our current arcade champion, I'm told the bar is not set too high but I sure cannot beat him (except in asteroids and 13 days of hell - my favourite !)

We'll be adding 1 or 2 new games every week and getting rid of the least popular ones. There are 5 free games too all you need to do to play those is become a member.

3) The Painting Competition

We have simplified the painting comp so anyone can enter up to 3 entries of any miniatures.

You have to show a photo of the unpainted miniature in one thread (with a note next to the miniature saying something like "Battle Reporter forum painting competition") and then you're away.

We're going to give roughly 10 weeks for each painting competition (September's has just finished so the next comp for November will start shortly, get painting now !). All entries earn 25 gold crowns each.

This is just a way to get us all painting regularly and to have some extra fun in the process.

The image above is one of Kiwi (John's) crypt ghoul entry. He looks after the Stumpy Heaven blogsite - far too many Dwarfs there for my liking, their necks are are bit too tough for my Vampire Army's liking ;)

new Warhammer Fantasy Battle Report hub design

The Warhammer Battle hub is getting a makeover and some more reports.

I've made it easier to navigate around the site and will resume adding Battle Reports tomorrow.

There are now individual links to all reports by format, length, pts value and writer. Previously, you might have had to scroll through multiple pages or see more reports on one page than you were interested in. Now you can go direct to the report you want to see most. Also, you can use the Contents Filter to narrow down your report selection or you can use the google search box which searches the hub.

I've added a recent comments box at the foot of the page so you can check out the reports that people are commenting on most.

Warhammer Invasion Card Game (Kingdoms, Quests & Combat) Out Soon

There's Great artwork and potential in the new Warhammer Invasion game published by Fantasy Flight Games, I think it's released in October 2009

The first I heard of this was from a friend called Sever14 from the Battle Reporter forum. I started to check it out, egged on by the great artwork and I like what I see and what I read.

Here's the summary from Fantasy Flight Games:-

Warhammer: Invasion The Card Game is a two-player card game of intense warfare, clever kingdom management, and epic questing. Players must carefully allocate their resources as they seek to build their kingdom, complete quests, and attack the enemy’s capital.

Will you play the indestructible grudge-bearing Dwarfs, the shrewd and manoeuvrable Empire, the savage and destructive Orcs, or the entropic and mutating forces of Chaos? Or will you cleverly craft an alliance, playing the combined might of the forces of either Order or Destruction?
