In preparation for Melon's debut performance at Warm @ Plastic People in London next Friday (November 20th) where he will be playing alongside Tensnake (Live) and Jacques Renault, Peder Clark caught up with him for a quick chat!

You were a successful DJ for years before you started producing as well - why did you decide to move in this direction? What advice would you give to DJs who want to start producing? Do you think your DJing helps your production?

This is not completely correct, I started producing and playing in bands when I was 8 years old but waited for about 20 years to release something! It was more the other way around. At the age of 16 I started going out and needed money and as I had explored about everything I could do with my equipment I sold it all. Not long afterwards I started to miss making music terribly and found a quick solution in mixing records, which I also already did at a young age at school parties. Personally I think DJing and producing are two complete different things, sure it helps if you know what's going on on the dancefloor to produce club records, but there's more music to be made...

You've run many many parties in Amsterdam - who have been some of your favourite guests, and have you any particularly interesting anecdotes to tell...?

It's hard to pin point out one guest to be honest, all of my guest have been carefully selected and are friends or became friends, which made most of the nights special, 'cause there's bonding in the booth. But if I really have to... I must say that the Ratio? Easter parties always have been very special!

You scored quite a big hit with "Nitzi (In My Mind, So Fine)" - were you surprised by it's success? It's not a very obvious record, it's quite subtle...

This is a very special and personal record for me, made with a lot of emotions about losing somebody, so it was quite a surprise indeed that it went so well. Also kinda weird that other people experienced it on a complete different level of emotions and sometimes even the same. I remember one night in the Weekend club in Berlin where I played with Tobi Neumann and where I dropped it and the whole crowd went silent and closed their eyes, this was such an amazing moment and the biggest compliment ever (I still get goosebumps when I think about it). I guess it's easier to make everybody scream with there hands in the air and this was the opposite, ‘til the bass line dropped in!

Who do you see as your contemporaries, both locally in the Netherlands, but also internationally?

San Proper, Nuno Dos Santos, Patrice Baumel, Doc Martin, Innervsions, Seth Troxler, Tom Trago, Rush Hour, etc... some by the music they make, some by the vision they have.

Whatever happened to the next parts of the Four Seasons release? I really enjoyed Spring and Summer!

Thanks! It has been a while indeed, but as this project isn't really time bonded… I'm not in a rush and it should be good! But part 2 is almost done and should be hitting the stores this winter (I hope ) with remixes of Nuno Dos Santos and TJ Kong & San Proper.

A record that's been in your bag for the last five years?

Several, some records grow on me and although there's lots of new music coming out I can't get rid of them and I keep on playing them till they become a Melon trademark hahaha! But one of them is definitely the Motorbass album [“Pansoul”]. Although it doesn't get played often anymore, it's always with me.

One of your secret weapons (if you want to tell us...)?

Hmmm, several this year, but I can reveal my secret weapon of last year's summer: Roberto Rodriguez “Ride”. This one has a completely different effect on the dance floor than when you just hear it at home or on the headphones in the record store. Don't know why but I think many people neglected this one as it seems to be very cheesy when you listen to it for the first time but when played out loud it's a complete dance floor killer!

Future plans for Melon? Future plans for Ratio?Music?

Taking the label to the next level and release more than one record a year hahahaha... Besides that releasing an album, probably not really a dance album but an album with lots of different music that made me the man I am today. And see what the possibilities are to make this album into a live show with a real band instead of on my own with some gear, this is one of my dreams to accomplish. Obviously continuing playing and organising Ratio? parties all over as this is something that I still love doing and gives me lot of energy!

This Friday - 23rd October, Warm take over 'The City Arts & Music Project' aka The CAMP. For one night only Warm will be joining forces with Horse Meat Disco to provide the perfect soundtrack to kick start your weekend!

From Horse Meat Disco we welcome the originators, Mr Jim Stanton and Mr James Hillard. Since its humble beginnings over 6 years ago Horse Meat Disco has become an institution on both sides of the sexual divide due in large part to its dedication and appreciation to disco music in all its forms. This formula proved successful from the start and led the club to take up its residency every Sunday in the most fantastic South London boozer, Eagle London. Now week in week out the guys are playing around the world and this year alone they have been to Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, America, Canada and all over Europe and the UK!

The Horse Meat Disco guys will be supported by the Warm residents, Ali Tillett & Rob Summerhayes. Representing many of the biggest names from the house and disco scene including Horse Meat Disco and responsible for some of the best parties in London, the resident DJs from the Warm Agency have a lot to live up to. Innervisions return to London to continue their series of intimate club sessions. On Thursday October 29th, head bosses Ame and Dixon take over Londons' foremost venue Plastic People. This will be the last ever Innervisions Thursday night session at Plastic People so it is definitely not to be missed and we will be opening the doors at 9pm to get in the extra hours!

Dixon and Ame have cemented their reputations as two of the worlds best house DJ's playing clubs such as Fabric in London, Panorama bar in Berlin, Cielo in New York and Yellow in Tokyo, as well as producing some of the most talked about tracks and remixes of the past few years.

Currently Ame and Dixon have been busy working on the forthcoming Innervisions schedule. The remainder of 2009 and early 2010 will see the release of new music from Machine AKA Radioslave, Marcus Worgull, Critical Mass and Tokyo Black Star as well as a the second installment of "Muting the Noise". This year will also see the release of the hugely anticipated new mix CD "Temporary Secretary" by Dixon, which is packed full of special edits and exclusives!

Besides this Ame and Dixon have also been busy in the studio working on remixes for Rekids and DFA as well working alongside Henrik Schwarz on forthcoming Critical Mass remixes which will see the light of day in the new year as well as a very special film score which they will perform live at Timewarp Festival in 2010!

We have a handful of £8 Early Bird tickets now on sale at Resident Advisor and then the advance ticket price will be £10. Otherwise it will be £12 on the door on the night!

In preparation for this Friday's (October 16th) very special Plastic People party to celebrate 10 years of Beats in Space with Tim Sweeney DJing all night long, Peder Clark caught up with Tim to grab him for a few questions!

Tell me about the beginnings of Beat In Space. What were you doing before BiS? Did you ever think 10 years ago you'd still be doing it today?!

I was in high school in Baltimore living life like I was in The Wire or Pink Flamingos (basically the only two things people think of when I mention Baltimore is The Wire or the director John Waters). I think by now I thought the radio station would have kicked me off the air. Luckily, they seem to be getting nicer to me over the years. That could change any minute though.

Who have been your favourite guests on BiS? Is there anybody who you still desperately want to hook up with for the show?

Well, we were just having a little "twitter discussion" about the most mixes from a guest on the show. Brennan Green has the most right now, followed by Sasha (Crnobrnja) /In Flangranti (in various DJ names), then it's JD Twitch and Mike Simonetti, then Lovefingers and Horse Meat Disco. But you know, too many favorites to name.

People I desperately want for the show?

Well, we could start with the ones from Detroit: Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Jeff Mills, Theo Parrish and Moodymann.

Any anecdotes about when it's all gone terribly wrong?

Hmm, it could have gone terribly wrong on election night last year when I had TBD (Lee Douglas and Justin Vandervolgen) on the show. They showed up completely wasted after going to some downtown art party where a tequila bar was part of the exhibit. Luckily, they recorded the mix before they came so it wasn't a train wreck session and ended up being a really fun show doing a play by play of Obama getting elected live on the air.

What's your involvement with RVNG International?

They're friends of mine and we just work together on different projects... it started out with mix CDs, then records, then t-shirts and now I'm starting up a new BIS record label with help from RVNG!

What is the house and disco scene like in New York at the moment? I've been hearing good things about House n Home, Sunday Best etc...

There are a few good things going on, like you mentioned, but overall it's not that great in New York right now. There just aren't the venues to support it. So much has been shut down because of the police, neighbors, sound complaints, rent issues, high fees, etc. It's just a bit of a difficult time right now, I think. But it's New York, there are 8 or 9 million people here, so there has to be something going on!

You recently did a megamix of Balihu records for Pitchfork. What's your relationship to Balihu and where do you see their place in the NY disco scene, etc? I think Daniel Wang saw it very much as a personal project which is or was quite outside of what was going on at the time...

Danny just sent me an email one day asking if I would be interested in doing a Balihu megamix for him to help with his new compilation. I've been a big fan of the Balihu releases and had a really fun time when he came on the radio show before, so I said "of course!" Just a fun little project to help a friend.

For sure Balihu has had a big place in the "new" NY Disco scene. I think those records are a reference point for a lot of people, from Morgan Geist to DFA and so on. It's too bad Danny moved out to Berlin,but I understand. The way of life, the music scene and the gay scene just aren't the same here and now he's the king out there!

I'm working with Matt from RVNG on a new Beats In Space record label for early next year. It's still in the early stages though. Just getting the music together to release, so I can't say too much more just yet...

Two of the most talked about tracks in Dixons' sets over the last twelve months finally see the light of day on a very special release on Innervisions in November! Dixon's edits have for many years been a huge element to his much talked about DJ sets around the world! ....Peanut Man Returns!

Artist Mark McGowan is marking World Food Day on 16th October in support of Action Against Hunger in an extraordinary performance. He will ride a tiny child’s bicycle covered head-to-toe in peanut butter on a gruelling 24-hour journey around London.

His efforts aim to raise awareness on a new life-saving peanut-based treatment for children dying of hunger.

“As a father, and socially conscious artist, I want to create awareness on how it is unacceptable that 19 million children worldwide face life-threatening hunger, even though treatment is known.”
Mark McGowan

McGowan hopes his performance will increase public and political commitment to scale-up the treatment and prevention of child hunger in developing countries.

McGowan is to start his journey at 10am on October 15th 2009 at Downing Street and will circumnavigate London, ending in Greenwich on World Food Day - October 16th 2009.

Here's another mix by another Warm follower as promised! Today's mix is by James Fox and here's some info about him!

I’ve been DJing and making all sorts of different music for about ten years now, from hip hop to broken beat to dubstep to house music, and most points in between. This mix was done for a label called midnightminustwo, who recently put out an EP of mine called ‘Problems Solve Themselves’ that was supported by people like Ripperton, Stacey Pullen and James Holden. It was recorded using Ableton Live 7, and most of the tracks have been re-edited.
