Michael Clemente, Senior Vice President of Fox News Channel, was the keynote speaker at WCCC’s 25th anniversary commencement on Saturday May 19, while Professor Lisa Troy, Assistant Professor of Mathematics, was the Faculty Speaker. Student Speaker was Tracey M. Kosar and Brittany Kreidler, Class of 2012, sang the National Anthem. WCCC graduates – and veterans – Tara Pietrucha (United States Navy), and Alexander Torres-Cancel (United States Army) presented the colors.

“We are extremely proud of our graduation rate, but more so of the students themselves,” said Dr. Will Austin, President of WCCC. “It is a testament to our students, our faculty, and the support services system here that we have achieved this distinction.”

Under Dr. Austin’s leadership, WCCC continues to be among the fastest growing community colleges in the country.

Clemente joined FOX News Channel (FNC) in February of 2009 as the Senior Vice President of News for FNC. He currently oversees all news operations and news editorial for the network. In concluding his speech, Clemente urged the graduates to set “your sights and know where you are going.” He then implored them to stand up from their seats and reach high, and then asked them to reach a little higher. “Reach as high as you can to reach your goals,” he said.

“It was truly an honor to have Michael Clemente as our keynote speaker,” noted Dr. Austin, “There are only a handful of major news organizations in the world and Michael represents one of them.”

The graduates, however, were the real stars of the day.

“There are a lot of proud parents, sons and daughters, boyfriends and girlfriends, and family friends out there,” said Dr. Austin. “And I can tell you that we at the college are very, very proud of our graduates. They always know that they can come back any time and visit. We will always be here for them.”

While congratulating all the graduates, Dr. Austin also made a point of acknowledging Trish Ann Dehrone, who earned an Associates in Arts in Liberal Arts degree in just one year, accumulating an amazing 3.97 grade average in the process.

Faculty speaker Professor Lisa Troy has been a member of the math faculty at WCCC since 2003. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Actuarial Science from Mansfield University, and a Master in Education from Pennsylvania State University. She has been pivotal in redesigning the First Year Experience course required of all freshmen to provide a more interactive and meaningful learning experience. She is passionate about creating a student-centered learning environment, and remains active in her profession beyond the college.

Professor Troy is a regular presenter at educational conferences both nationally and regionally, including the On-Course National Conference, the New Jersey Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges Conference, the NJ Council of County Colleges Best Practices, and the NJ Chapter of the National Association for Developmental Education to name a few. She is an active member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

Student Speaker Tracey M. Kosar resides in Lopatcong Township with her two children; Stephen, 15 and Sara, 13. During her studies at WCCC, Kosar was named a Collegiate Scholar four times for her outstanding academic achievement. She was also inducted into Alpha Upsilon Rho, a chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, an International Honor Society and Lambda Alpha Epsilon, an American Criminal Justice Association. She also received three scholarships from the WCCC Board of Trustees and Foundation. Kosar was also just one of three student speakers chosen to present before the Board of Trustees and Foundation at their annual Scholarship Breakfast. She has also spoken on behalf of the United Way’s Women’s Leadership Council, a contributing donor to the College’s scholarship fund.

While pursuing her degree in Criminal Justice it became apparent to Kosar that she had a passion for victim advocacy. Her future goals are to work with women who have been victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault. She will be attending Centenary College in Hackettstown beginning in the Fall of 2012 where she will pursue her degree in Sociology with a concentration in Criminal Justice. Her ultimate goal is to receive her Masters Degree in Social Work.

“With hard work you can achieve your goals,” said Kosar. “In my case I worked hard every day. I chose to remain strong (despite obstacles). This is a thrill for me to have faced a challenge and won.”

Amy Goffinet, a part-time instructor for law courses, was selected by students for the Golden Eagle Award, given to a faculty or staff member each year who exemplifies dedication and commitment.

“This award goes to someone who really does a lot for the students and is recognized by the students for their efforts,” said Dr. Austin. “Amy may be part-time, but her dedication and commitment is full-time to our students.”

“Heat stroke and heat exhaustion are serious conditions that can require hospital care,” said Health and Senior Services Commissioner Mary O’Dowd. “In extremely hot weather, it is vital to drink plenty of fluids, spend time in cool places and minimize any physical activity. And please remember to pay special attention to small children and elderly family members and neighbors to make sure they are safe.”

Prolonged heat and humidity can present a serious health hazard, especially for young children, the elderly and persons taking certain medications.

Each year more than 1,200 persons are treated in New Jersey emergency departments for heat-related illness or sunburn. Overexposure to summer heat causes between 45 and 170 hospitalizations in New Jersey annually depending on the average outdoor temperature. The majority of those hospitalized in New Jersey are male, ages 65-84, and are hospitalized for 3 or more days.

To avoid health complications from excessive heat:

• Drink plenty of water or other non-alcoholic beverages.

• Make sure children and the elderly are drinking water, and ensure that persons with mobility problems have adequate fluids in easy reach.

• If you do not have air conditioning, spend time in air-conditioned places such as libraries, movies, malls or other public buildings during the hottest hours of the day. Check with your municipality to see if cooling centers are available.

• Wear loose and light-colored clothing.  Wear a hat when outdoors.

• Avoid any outdoor activity during the hottest hours of the day. Minimize physical activity for cooler times of the day (early morning or evening).

• Don’t leave children, frail elderly or a disabled person, or pets in an enclosed car — not even for a minute — as temperatures can quickly climb to dangerous levels.

• Talk to your health care provider about any medicine or drugs you are taking. Certain medications — such as tranquilizers and drugs used to treat Parkinson’s disease — can increase the risk of heat-related illness.

People suffering heatstroke can go from appearing normal to extremely ill in a matter of minutes.  Victims may have hot, dry skin, a high body temperature of 106 degrees or more, an absence of sweat, and a rapid and strong pulse.  Victims may become delirious or unconscious. Persons suffering from heatstroke need immediate medical attention.

Heat exhaustion is a milder illness that may take several days of high temperatures to develop. Victims may have pale, clammy skin and sweat profusely. They may feel tired, weak or dizzy and have headaches or sometimes cramps, but their body temperature will remain close to normal.

The Small Business Growth Business Center at the College’s Phillipsburg Education Center, assists new and emerging businesses with an opportunity to expand without being burdened with high overhead costs.

Affordable rent that includes utilities and a number of shared amenities, such as a large and small conference   room, copier, fax, shared Wi-Fi, and a receptionist, are just a few of the benefits offered.

An Open House for prospective tenants has been scheduled for June 14 from 5:50 to   7:30 p.m. The Open House includes a tour of the Small Business Growth Center and an opportunity to discuss leasing and other benefits with college officials. Special lease incentives will be offered to prospective tenants during the event.

The Small Business Growth Center helps new businesses keep costs down and allows   savings to be invested in the business, not on high rent or services, says Eve Azar, Vice President of Corporate and Continuing Education. If children don’t engage in educational activities such as reading and math over the summer, they can experience summer learning losses.

“With the majority of U.S. fourth-grade students reading below the proficient level, the summer months are critical for student learning,” said Meredith Curley, Dean of the College of Education at University of Phoenix. “By engaging in fun reading activities during the summer months, parents not only have the opportunity to encourage learning, but to motivate their children to develop a lifelong love of reading.”

Curley offers these tips for parents and caregivers to help incorporate reading into everyday activities in ways that will make it fun to keep learning all summer long.

“Reading is critical for a child’s success, no matter what age,” said Curley. “By finding ways to make reading part of your children’s everyday activities, you are helping them build a solid foundation not just for the next school year, but for their futures.”

For Younger Readers (grades K to 6)

• Read out loud. Encouraging your children to read aloud will help develop their reading fluency and build their confidence as readers. For example, ask them to read recipe directions as they help you prepare a treat in the kitchen. If they make a mistake, gently point out overlooked letters or words read incorrectly.
• Let them play. Games and activities played on electronic devices provide many opportunities to engage children with words and letters. Spelling games, word games and matching games can help children build reading proficiency and comprehension. Consider devices with learning games when purchasing a toy for a child. Instead of watching a movie in the car, consider audio books and CDs and DVDs with reading games.
• Turn them into storytellers. Have your child read a book and then retell the story. If he or she has trouble, help by asking the five Ws: Who, What, Where, When and Why.
• Hone their critical thinking skills. Success in reading isn’t just about decoding words, but also about comprehension. Help your children build critical thinking skills by asking them questions, such as what they think about something that happens in a story, if they have experienced something like that before, and other questions to help engage them in the story. Also, when they ask you questions, answer and then ask a follow-up question.
• Turn a library visit into an adventure. Make an ordinary trip to the public library an adventure for your child by selecting a topic to research. For instance, set out to learn everything you can about your hometown, animals or space; or set out to answer a specific question. Many libraries also offer weekly classes that parents can attend with their child to encourage the love of reading.

Simple activities such as these can increase a child’s understanding of sequencing, link reading to real-world activities, expand their vocabulary and feed their curiosity, all while building their interest in reading.

Choosing Books

A book that is too easy to read doesn’t help kids grow as readers, but books that are too difficult to read can be frustrating and discouraging. A simple rule of thumb for choosing an appropriate book is called the Five Finger Rule. Let your children pick out books that interest them. Have them read 100 words from the book, asking them to raise one finger for each word they don’t know, or are unsure of. If the child raises more than five fingers, the book is probably too difficult.

For Tween and Teen Readers

While younger children frequently read for fun, the voluntary reading rate tends to drop dramatically as they move through their teen years. A recent National Endowment of the Arts reading study found that while 54 percent of 9-year-olds read for pleasure, the number drops to 30 percent for 13-year-olds, and only 22 percent for 17-year-olds.

Curley recommends that you encourage your teen or tween to read by finding activities that engage their unique interests and allow them to assert their own opinions. Here are some ideas to help tweens and teens rediscover the pleasure of reading:

• Have them write. Teens can submit book reviews to sites such as www.YABooksCentral.com. This is a great way to combine reading, writing and critical thinking skills. Or, encourage them to write fan fiction, putting their own spin on a favorite book or genre, either as a written story or a video script version of a book.
• Let them check out graphic novels. These aren’t the comic books you might have grown up with. There are some high-quality titles available that deal with a wide range of subjects that will appeal to girls and boys and can be a great way to engage reluctant readers.
• Look for book-to-film novels. If teens have seen the movie, they might be willing to read the book. If you read it too, then you can talk about the differences between the two versions such as what worked, what didn’t, why the filmmakers might have made certain changes, etc.
• Find different reading materials. Magazines, newspapers, short stories and online articles can also help build a teen’s reading comprehension and vocabulary skills. If your teen has a particular interest, such as cars or sports, consider getting them a magazine subscription.
• Suggest a book club. Check your local library or bookstore to see if they have teen reading clubs. If not, encourage your teen to start one. They will be able to read what their friends are reading and can then have fun talking about it.

Choosing Books

There are a lot of middle grade and young adult books available. So many, in fact, it can be overwhelming. Here are a few ways you and your teen can find something they will enjoy reading:

• Start at the library. Librarians often showcase new and popular books in displays in the youth reading sections. Let your tween or teen explore the options and read a chapter or two to see what piques their interest. (If they find a series they like, consider buying the rest of the books for them.) There might be suggested teen reading lists on the library website, as well.
• Go online. Teens tend to want to read what their peers are reading. Check out websites such as www.GoodReads.com, or www.TeenReads.com, or teen book review blogs such as www.TheBookCellarx.com or www.KatiesBookBlog.com. Additionally, many libraries now offer e-books for check out, making it easy to get a good book for your tablet or e-reader.

Summer Reading Lists

In addition to reading lists put together by your local libraries, you can find several good book lists online.

• Reading Rockets (www.ReadingRockets.org) provides book lists by theme, so if you want to find books about art, monsters, animals or science, you are covered. The website also provides book lists for parents of children with disabilities.
• Reading is Fundamental (www.RIF.org) provides book lists divided by age group, as well as a multicultural book list.
• The Children’s Book Council (http://www.cbcbooks.org/) offers lists for social studies and science books, books hot off the presses, and the Children’s Choices lists of books chosen by teams of children from across the country.
