The Bible is a library containing 66 books written by about 40 different authors scattered across many countries over a period of about 1,600 years. The story of how this book came into being is truly remarkable. Given the time and distance separating the various authors and the fact that there are no real contradictions in the Bible, one must naturally conclude that it could have only come from God.

"Learn From Me" - Part 5 (Hebrews 4:14-16)

In Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus offered a two-fold invitation. First, Jesus offered rest. But Jesus also offered an opportunity to learn of Him (KJV) or from Him (NKJV). We want to learn "of" or about Jesus. We also want to learn "from" Him. Over the next several weeks, we're going to look at several passages in an effort to do just that.

What did Jesus look like? There have been countless paintings and renderings of Jesus. A number of movies have been made where Jesus is portrayed. Of course, there was no such thing as flash photography in the first century, so people are only making their best guess as to the appearance of Jesus.

The truth is, we don't know what Jesus looked like physically. Scriptures don't describe His body type, His build, or His features.

However, I believe one of the best "pictures" of Jesus Christ is found in Colossians 1:13-18. It is a beautiful picture that once again shows the deity and power of Christ. Many people today try to lower Jesus to the level of man. This paragraph of Scripture helps us to see Christ for who He is, was, and always will be.

Have you ever wondered what it might have been like to be one of the apostles? I mean, you'd be walking with Jesus every day. You would have it all figured out, wouldn't you?

Well, if you did, you wouldn't have been much like the twelve apostles that Jesus chose. We see many times in scripture that the apostles had questions, they wondered, they worried, and they doubted--at least while Jesus was with them.

The apostles had much to learn. Today's text is John 14:5-11. In this text, we find at least two of the apostles learning very important lessons from Jesus.

This week, as we look to learn more from and about Jesus Christ, let's consider Hebrews 1:1-4. The theme of the book of Hebrews seems to be "Jesus is Better." Throughout the book, the writer talks about something and then goes on to tell how Jesus is better. This happens from the very beginning of the book. Jesus is better than the fathers and the prophets. Jesus is better than the angels. If we were to continue reading, we would find more and more examples.

There is so much to learn "of" and "from" Jesus in this passage. We're not going to fully consider everything we can learn in these four verses, but I want us to notice at least a couple of things.

This week, let's consider John 1:1-18. There is much to learn both "of" and "from" Jesus in this passage.

In Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus says:

"Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” (NKJV)

There is a lot of meat in this invitation from Jesus Christ. Most often, we make application of this by saying that we need to go to Jesus for rest. However, we need to notice the other part of the Lord's invitation.

Jesus says, "...learn from me."

There is so much that we can learn from Jesus. Jesus is our perfect example.

Over the next several weeks, I intend to use this space to look at different passages of Scripture where we learn something about and something from Jesus Christ.

A Review of NOAH

You may be here to see what I have to say about the brand new Noah movie. Well, if that’s the case let me say this:

I have not seen the movie. I do not plan to see the movie. This post is not about the movie. This post is about the Book.

The story of Noah and the ark is told in Genesis 6-8.

Let’s do a little word association: What is the first word that comes to mind when you hear the name Noah? What word do we most often associate with Noah? Most of us would probably say “ark” or “flood.”

But let’s consider what word the writer of Hebrews might associate with Noah--“faith.”

The Whole Truth

In Bible class last night, the study focused on King Nebuchadnezzar's dream in Daniel 2. If you recall, the dream was about a statue that was made of several different materials. Daniel told Nebuchadnezzar the dream and then explained it to him.

The different materials represented different kingdoms or empires--Babylon included. Each section represented a new empire that would overthrow the previous. Definitely and interesting dream for a king. When King Nebuchadnezzar heard the interpretation he accepted it and acknowledged the power of Daniel's God.

This led to two questions in the Bible class. Here's the first one:

I've been struggling to decide what I want to write about in this first blog post. I know that old saying is true: "You never get a second chance to make a first impression," so I want to make this post both interesting and encouraging in hopes that you'll come back for more.
