There's no getting around it - it's that time of year when there is a lot of demand on the time of our wonderful volunteers. The Alternative Gift Fairs are right around the corner. Here's what we have on the schedule, where we are looking for help to staff them:

Nov. 12 and 13 is KIN (Kirkland Interfaith Network) in Kirkland

Nov. 13 - Wallingford Presbyterian Church (Seattle)

Nov. 13 - East Shore UC (Bellevue)

Nov. 19 and 20 - Keystone UCC (Seattle)

Dec. 3 - North Shore UCC (Woodinville)

Dec. 10 - Morningstar (Monroe)

Dec. 11 - Plymouth CC (Seattle)

Details of the time and place of these events are in the calendar portion of the blog.

BUT WAIT - first, we need to socialize! Our next Heifer Happy Hour is coming up this Tuesday, October 25, at the Issaquah Brewhouse, 35 W Sunset Way, Issaquah, from 6 to 8 pm. This will be a perfect time to meet fellow volunteers and talk about the upcoming events.

... and that means it's getting to be time to gear up for the Alternative Gift Fairs that are so important to Heifer. The details will be posted in the calendar on this blog. So far we have the following scheduled:

Nov. 6 - St. Patrick, Seattle;

Nov. 12 and 13 - KIN in Kirkland;

Dec. 10 - Morning Star in Monroe;

Dec. 11 - Plymouth Congregational Church, Seattle.

Eastside Happy Hour!

Hey there, friends of Heifer. Enough of this meeting only on the WEST side of Lake Washington. We want to give equal time to the Eastsiders, too. So this Tuesday August 23rd, we're having a Heifer Happy Hour at the Issaquah Brewhouse, 35 W Sunset Way, Issaquah (425-557-1911). It will be from 6 to 8 pm.

All you Westsiders, please come join us, too. It should be a beautiful evening to cross the lake and mingle with other Heifer friends and volunteers. It will soon be time to gear up for all the holiday gift fairs, so let's enjoy a summer get-together while summer is still here.

Summer Happy Hour Time

It's time! Time for our summer Heifer Happy Hour!

This one should be fun. It's at a family friendly location: the Montlake Ale House, 2307 24th Ave East, at 6pm on Tuesday July 26th. It's family friendly because there's a play area for kids! Yep, in an Ale House!

Did I mention the Montlake Ale House is in Seattle's Montlake neighborhood? (well, duh!) It's about .75 mile south of Husky Stadium. Easy to get to - Montlake Blvd turns into 24th Ave E, so if you know how to get to Husky Stadium, you just keep going .75 miles south. There should be ample parking on the residential side streets, plus some limited parking right in front.

So kick back, pretend the weather is warm (hey, this may be all we get this summer!), and come share a brewski (or drink of your choice) with us and catch up on what's been happening with Heifer.

Happy Summer!

Well, compared to the rest of the good old US of A, this can hardly be called "summer". But it's what we have, so we go with it and enjoy it as best we can.

And Farmers Markets are a part of summer here. And so, as summer has been moving along, so have the Farmers Markets. And we still need help!

We have two Farmers Markets coming up: one in Issaquah on August 6th and one in Sammamish on August 17. These are great ways to spread Heifer's message to folks not yet aware of who we are, in a fun setting. Check the calendar part of this blog for details, and let Peg Carver (peg_carver@yahoo.com) know when you can help out. A little bit of your time goes a long way.

If you are a typical web surfer, you think of all kinds of things to search for on the internet. Well, did you know that there's a way to help Heifer while you web surf?

There's a search engine called GoodSearch that donates a small (very small) amount of money each time you do a search using their search engine (powered by Yahoo). It may only be a penny a click, but it adds up. Be sure to pick Heifer International as your chosen charity!

So, you want to know more about Heifer but didn't know whom to ask? You're afraid that if you try to speak for Heifer you won't know what to say? You don't quite understand how Heifer works?

Is that what's bothering you, Bunky?

Well, question no more! All this and more will be revealed. Just come to our introduction to Heifer on June 21. All will be made clear.

That's June 21, at Keystone Church, 5019 Keystone Place N, Seattle 98103, from 6 to 8 pm. Meet other Heifer volunteers and get a good introduction to Heifer.

Farmers Markets!

Back in March I let you know that it's time to think about Farmers Markets again. Well, with the gorgeous weather we have (at least for a few days) we can really feel that it's Farmers Market time. Volunteering at the Farmers Markets is an easy way to help spread Heifer's message to many who have not yet heard of Heifer.

Time to plan for Maryhill

Woo hoo! It's time to mark our calendars for that most fun Heifer event of the summer - the Maryhill Winery concert series. Maryhill Winery is located along the Columbia River in southeast Washington. Every year Maryhill donates $2 of every bottle of wine sold at their concerts to Heifer. And so they like Heifer to have a presence at the concerts. We share this task with Portland Heifer.

This year the concert schedule is as follows:

July 30 - YES and STYX

Aug. 6 - Gipsy King

Sept. 17 - Michael McDonald with Boz Scaggs

Sept. 24 - Counting Crows

It's a lot of fun! You greet the attendees as they arrive and depart. And you attend the concert FOR FREE! The atmosphere is festive, the folks are all in a great mood, the scenery is fantastic, and the wine is great. It doesn't get any better than that.

The July 30 concert will be hosted by Heifer's Portland chapter, but any and all volunteers are welcome to join them. If this interests you (and why wouldn't it?) email us for more information and we'll get you set up.

Heifer and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority

We recently had the privilege of attending the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority's Far West Regional Conference. What a great group of women! We were impressed by their passion for making the world a better place. Heifer was chosen by their president as their charity of choice for the next two years, and all the chapters are raising money for Heifer. The women were all enthusiastic about learning more and getting the materials they could use to do fundraising in their areas. We were so happy to support them in this work.

Eliza was there Saturday evening, and reported that they throw a wild party, too! That's Eliza, pictured above, with a few of the conference participants.

Okay, Heifer friends. It's been too long - we really need to get together a little more often. And there's no better way to do that than with a Happy Hour. So, here we go.

We've scheduled the next Heifer Happy Hour for Tuesday (yes, THIS Tuesday) May 24th, at 6 pm in the Jolly Roger Tap Room at the Maritime Pacific Brewing Company. I know it's short notice, but really, how much time do you need to get ready to have some good brew with good company?

The Maritime Brewing Company is in Ballard, at 1111 NW Ballard Way, Seattle 98107, http://maritimebrewery.ypguides.net/ There's parking available, and the atmosphere (as well as the company) is fun. So, come on over and let's get going on this business of ending hunger and poverty in the world!
