It’s always nice to be recognized, and we’re thrilled to have been chosen as the area’s #1 Milwaukee bed and breakfast by wisn.com’s A List voters. The A List asks local residents to vote on the businesses and attractions that make Milwaukee great. You can watch the announcement and visit the Inn here:

Milwaukee is a great town, full of fun activities, and we’re just a short drive away from them all. Sports fanatics can see action year-round, such as a Brewers baseball game, a Bucks basketball game, an Admirals hockey game, or a Wave soccer match.

The world-famous Summerfest, a ten-day long celebration of music, is the highlight of the summer festival season, but the various ethnic festivals such as Irish Fest, German Fest, Festa Italiana, and many more, offer great food and entertainment.

Of course Milwaukee has wonderful museums from the stunning Milwaukee Art Museum to the informative and interesting Public Museum, to the quintessentially “Milwaukee” Harley-Davidson Museum.

If tours are your thing, Milwaukee has them. Of course, there’s several brewery tours, but there’s also walking tours of historic areas, and river tours for a different perspective. The stunning stretch of beautiful Lake Michigan lakefront offers the whole spectrum of water activities from sunning at the beach to charter fishing to sailing.

Cedarburg and the Washington House Inn are an easy drive from all Milwaukee has to offer–we’re always finding new places to go and new things to do.

We are pleased to partner this month with the Wisconsin Museum of Quilts and Fiber Arts. Stay with us this month and receive two FREE admission tickets to this beautiful new Cedarburg, Wisconsin attraction, just minutes from the Washington House Inn. The current exhibit “Taking Flight” showcases birds in quilts, and other fiber arts. The exhibit is extraordinary, and reminds us that spring is close at hand. The permanent collections include vintage quilts and fabrics, handwoven coverlets and much more. The museum is open Wednesday through Saturday, 10 am to 4 pm and Sunday 12 pm to 4 pm, so plan your stay accordingly.

Many of our country-style rooms feature quilts. This quilt hangs in the Mary Gannon room, one of our two-level king suites.

Cedarburg Wisconsin Winter Activities

Just because the cold is upon us doesn’t mean there’s no fun to be had in Cedarburg. One of the most exciting new developments around town is the construction of a new free outdoor ice skating rink, Festive Ice, just one block away from us! First they built the barriers, lined the area with plastic sheeting and then flooded it. Mother Nature obligingly did the rest of the work by sending us a bit of chill, and it was all set to open last weekend. A fun time was had by all, now it’s your turn. Bring your skates!

Other Wisconsin winter activities appeal to thrill seekers looking for the fun of downhill skiing or snowboarding. There are two nearby options: Little Switzerland in Slinger or Sunburst in Kewaskum. Both are just a half-hour drive away and offer ski and board rentals so you don’t have to pack your skis. If you’re a little unsure of your balance, Sunburst also offers tubing–all the exhilaration of downhill sports with none of that pesky falling down!

For those who like their winter sports a bit on the quieter side, and providing we get just a bit more snow, Local Motion Outfitters offers snowshoe rentals and has good advice where to go to enjoy some winter trails. You can also rent snowshoes at Riveredge Nature Center, one of our favorite places for a winter walk, in snowshoes or hiking boots. Riveredge hosts many special events, talks and educational program and is a great resource for learning about our local ecology.

Recipe: Oatmeal Coffee Cake

We’re always looking for quick, easy no-fail recipes that taste great. In every respect, this recipe is a winner! Perfect for breakfast or afternoon snacking, this cake will soon be one of your favorites.

Oatmeal Coffee Cake Recipe

Ingredients:
1 ½ cups boiling water
½ cup butter
1 cup oatmeal
2 eggs
1 cup sugar
1 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
1 ½ cups flour

Topping:
1 Tablespoon butter, melted
1 Tablespoon flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
½ cup brown sugar

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour a 9 inch by 9 inch pan. In large bowl, combine boiling water, butter and oatmeal. Let sit for 20 minutes. Add remaining cake ingredients and stir until mixed. Bake 40 minutes or until done. Combine topping ingredients and mix until crumbly. Sprinkle over top of cake and return to oven 5 minutes. Serves 9.

Washington House Inn and Cedarburg–the perfect overnight trip from Chicago

We’ve been getting calls from folks who heard about us on Chicago’s ABC7 show 190 North. Host Janet Davies featured us in a story about Cedarburg a few weeks ago. The show covered a lot of the town’s must-see attractions including the Cedar Creek Winery, Anvil Pub and Grill, the General Store Museum, and the Wisconsin Museum of Quilts and Fiber Arts. They also visited our neighbors at Amy’s Candy Kitchen and if you watch the video, you will catch a glimpse of our innkeeper Margie’s two grandons enjoying some of Amy’s treats. We’re thrilled that the show has caught the attention of so many Chicago area viewers. It’s great to talk to people who have never heard of Cedarburg and are excited about visiting us for the first time.

Summer!

Today’s officially the first day of summer, but Cedarburg is already in full swing of summertime activities. The town has been bustling all week with the Plein Air Painting Competition. It’s so much fun to stroll around the historic district and peek over the shoulders of artists portraying beautiful Cedarburg. The artists must complete a painting from real life outside during certain hours. After the competition, paintings are displayed in the Cultural Center, and then offered for sale. This is a favorite event for many of us here at the Inn, and we display many past entries in our Gathering Room.

Of course, this weekend is Cedarburg’s biggest event of the summer: Strawberry Festival! The local berries are ripe and the Cedar Creek Strawberry Blush is ready to pour. Festival-goers who stroll up and down Washington Avenue will be able to enjoy artisan and merchant shopping, live music, family fun and of course strawberries everywhere! It looks like the weather is going to cooperate for a glorious festival.

The fun doesn’t end after Strawberry Festival, though. Coming up we have the Rotary Music Festival, the Fourth of July Hometown Celebration, the Architectural Treasures Tour, and the Ozaukee County Fair. And there’s lots of ongoing events in Cedarburg during the summer. Friday mornings bring the Farmer’s Market and Friday nights bring the Sounds of Summer free outdoor concerts. Summertime is fun time, let’s get out there and enjoy it!

Tailgate Tour

The Washington House Inn was honored May 18, 2012 to have past and present Green Bay Packers, as well as President & CEO Mark Murphy, as our overnight guests. Cedarburg/Grafton was the 4th stop on their five-city Tailgate Tour. Local non-profit, Portal, Inc., was selected by the Green Bay Packers to be the host and beneficiary of the event which generated significant funds for this wonderful organization. Portal, Inc. has been serving adults with disabilities since 1965 by working with local businesses to match strengths and interests of job candidates with the needs and interests of potential employers. The Washington House Inn is proud to be a Portal, Inc.employer. What a thrill it was for everyone who had the opportunity to interact with the Packer Party as they made several stops throughout the Ozaukee County area. This was an unforgettable experience for one and all to rub elbows with the amazing athletes of our beloved team. Go Pack!

Cedarburg was also featured on the travel series, Road Trippin’ on Madison’s FOX 47 TV. You’ll enjoy some of your favorite sights and sounds of the Cedarburg community when viewing this segment.

Baking with Jodi

Cedarburg and the Washington House Inn have been showing up on TV all over the state lately. With such a photogenic town, why not?

Recently the TV show Living with Amy from FOX 11 Green Bay came to visit and they filmed our own Jodi making her award-winning cherry pecan scones. Jodi likes to point out that while this is her moment of fame, since it was only 5 minutes long, she still has ten minutes left of her allotted fifteen!
