The Scholastic Book Fair is always a highlight of our year. PTA representatives transform the Art/Music room into our own intimate bookstore. This year’s theme is Groovy. From March 1-3, our students will enjoy this unique shopping experience. Proceeds raised benefit our Washington School library. Parent shopping night is Thursday, March 3 from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Thanks go to Mrs. Kelly Lancaster for serving as PTA Chairperson for this event.

Read Across America

At Washington School, we celebrate Read Across America Day as Read Across America Week (2/29-3/4)! We will have community leaders serve as guest readers during the week. On March 2, students from the RHS Future Teachers Club and the RHS Public Speaking class will come to read with our students. Students and staff are invited to wear pajamas for a comfortable day of reading that will include a school-wide Drop Everything and Read period (DEAR) and other activities. Many thanks go to Ms. Lynn Maloney for serving as the PTA chairperson this year.

CogAT – Grade 2

Parents and guardians of second grade students are invited to attend a session of our Second Cup of Coffee interactive parent-teacher workshop. The second grade workshop, “Strengthening Second Grade Literacy Skills” will be held on Thursday, February 11 at 8:45 a.m. in the Library/Media Center. the presenters are Mrs. Rachel Mejias and Mrs. Megan Fisher.

Grade 3 Vocal Concert – Tuesday, February 2 at 7:00 p.m.

Our annual vocal music concert featuring all grade three students, entitled “Rock and Roll Forever” will be held in the multipurpose room on Tuesday, February 2 at 7:00 p.m. Students should arrive via the triple doors at 6:30 p.m. Students should wear black pants or skirt and solid, brightly colored shirt, black socks and black shoes.

Welcome Back! I trust that the holiday season was peaceful and relaxing for you and your families. As we turn the page on this New Year, we look forward to the next few months with great anticipation. The pace at each grade level is accelerating and the students are stepping up to meet new challenges.

Our Character Education program is in full swing. During the month of January, our students and staff are concentrating on activities that support the Pillar of Fairness. In February, our focus will be on the Pillar of Respect. Please read below about our “Color Days” that are part of this program and discuss these Pillars with you child(ren).

Our One School, One Book event provides the opportunity for us to share a unique reading experience as a school community. This year we are reading Kevin Henkes’s The Year of Billy Miller, a 2014 Newberry Honor Book. A copy was sent home to each family. Please take the time every evening during the month of January to read the assigned sections with your family. We have a short discussion daily at our morning assembly. This program has been very well-received in the past. Librarian/Media Specialist Mrs. Bock and Librarian’s Assistant Mrs. Hebert organized the event with the support of our Washington School PTA.

Multicultural Day – Tuesday, January 26

Our families of Indian culture will present a learning fair on the country of India on Tuesday, January 26. Our students will be learning about the history and government of India. They will also visit various stations or kiosks to learn about traditional Indian dress, dance, foods and games.
