It was raining here in Arizona almost enough to do some real surfing. Instead, I stuck to the internet kind, a canceled game leading to some unexpected free time.

— Here’s an interesting national take on expansion from the St. Petersburg Times (thought I’d disagree completely that San Diego State makes much sense).

— Here’s an even more exhaustive look at expansion from The Bleacher Report. It’s well-researched, though as an increasing traditionalist, I shudder a bit at the idea that conferences need to make major moves just to add a few more TV homes. I still wonder if the loss of all the tradition that has built the conference its following in the first place is worth it.

— Here’s a take on why significant realignment of the college football landscape may not happen.

— Just a bonzana of expansion material today as the Boulder Daily Camera had a couple pieces examining what it could mean for Colorado. Here’s a news story, and a column saying that if the Pac-10 asks, the Buffs can’t say no.

We’ll start with the news that UW offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier has been named to the Idaho Athletic Hall of Fame (which honors athletes from the state, or who represented the state, and not necessarily just the University of Idaho).

Nussmeier was a standout QB at the University of Idaho in the early 1990s, throwing for 10,824 yards in his career.

He will be inducted into the Idaho Athletic Hall of Fame on April 10 , 2010 in Coeur d’Alene.

The other inductees in this year’s hall of fame class are North Idaho native Carissa Yassen who was an all american track star at Purdue, and is now deceased; Kristen Armstrong a olympic gold medal cyclist; Ali Neimann an Idaho native and all Big West basketball player at the U of I; and Dave Triplett who was a football player for the Vandals in the 1960’s. The inductees are pick by a committee that actively researches deserving Idaho athletes and invites anyone who thinks they might have a deserving athlete in mind to submit a bio to the committee. Some other HOF members include Hec Edmunson (he was coach at Idaho before coming to UW), Dennis Erickson, John Friesz, Jerry Kramer, Dan O’Brien, Dee Pickett (father of Cody), and Mark Sclereth.

All Donald Butler did at the NFL scouting combine this weekend was the bench-press test.

And all Butler did in that test was perform 35 repetitions at 225 pounds, the most of any linebacker and tied for fifth among the 330-some players in attendance at the combine.

“I thought I would bench press around there,” Butler said in a telephone interview after the combine. “You’re always happy when you can hit your goals.”

Butler suffered a sprained ankle during the Senior Bowl in Alabama, and while it’s feeling better, he decided to hold off until Washington’s Pro Day on March 10 to perform the other physical tests such as the 40-yard dash.

Butler has been training in Florida, and while his goal was 35 repetitions on the bench-press test, that marked a personel best. It was the second time he maxed out in bench-press training since heading to Florida.

Butler measured 6 feet 1, 245 pounds at the combine.

He was one of two players from Washington in Indianapolis. Daniel Te’o-Nesheim was also present. His time of 6.91 seconds in a three-cone rushing drill was second-fastest among all defensive linemen.
