Romain Jerome Limited Editions Mark 100-Year Anniversary of the Titanic

One hundred years ago this month, the RMS Titanic set off on its legendary, ill-fated voyage across the Atlantic. And while moviegoers across the world file into theaters to view the 3-D re-release of James Cameron’s 1997 smash-hit film Titanic, which dramatically portrays the events on that legendary vessel in April 1912, Swiss watchmaker Romain Jerome offers timepiece aficionados an opportunity to make a more personal connection with one of the 20th Century’s greatest milestones, with two limited-edition anniversary wristwatches commemorating it.

The two new models, each limited to 100 pieces, are the Steampunk Auto 100^th Anniversary and Steampunk Chrono 100^th Anniversary. Each is housed in a 50-mm-diameter case featuring the distinctively rough, raw finishes that are a hallmark of the brand’s very first collection, also inspired by the Titanic, called Titanic-DNA.

Both of the Steampunk models feature a bezel of oxidized and stabilized steel, created by a fusion of metal from the legendary underwater wreck of the Titanic and another metal provided by the Harland & Wolff shipyards, where the gigantic ship was built. For these anniversary pieces, the mobile propellers appearing on the dial of the Steampunk and reminiscent of those on the ship, have been oxidized and stabilized by the same process used for the bezels. The models feature engraved casebacks with a medallion commemorating the centennial of the Titanic’s launch date.

The new models come in three variations including three-hand models that can be had in 42 mm or 45.5 mm versions and a new chronograph model available only in the 45.5 mm case size.Omega understands the Seamaster line (and its buyers) and the new models not only exhibit the correct Seamaster DNA and design, but they are also powered by in-house Omega movements.

The Omega 8500 (three hand movement) is a co-axial movement with a 60 hour power reserve thanks to its twin barrel design. The 8500 utilizes 39 jewels, a free sprung balance, and beats at a relatively slow 25,200 vph. The chronograph models use the calibre 9300 which is a brand new column-wheel chronograph movement. Seen as a two register display, only the three o’clock subdial is for the chronograph and uses a white hand for elapsed hours and an orange ProPlof-style hand for elapsed minutes. Running seconds show on the nine o’clock subdial, while chrono seconds show on the main (full size) second hand for easy reading. This layout is simple and ingenious and largely the coolest feature of the 9300 based Planet Ocean. The 9300 shares the 8500′s 60 hour power reserve but it beats at a more standard 28,800 vph. Both of these new calibres are COSC capable, fully decorated by Omega, and carry a four year warranty.

While these new models are more expensive than their older siblings, they represent a considerable step forward in design and technology. Omega fans have been receptive to the new pricing, especially when considering these new models have been developed to compete against the king, Rolex. At $6000 for a 42 mm Planet Ocean and nearly $8000 for a comparable 40 mm Rolex Submariner, it seems Omega has made an easy choice for many buyers (regardless of which watch is better).

Ressence ZeroSeries

Established in 2009 and conceived by Belgian industrial designer Benoît Mintiens, Ressence lives by the credo “less is more”, and the brand’s name is a contraction of “Renaissance of the Essentials”. Its unique time display might be described as circles turning within circles.

Unlike many brands that add depth and layers to their dials, Ressence displays time on a flush-mounted revolving dial that places all graphical elements in one plane. The mechanical display system features a revolving module driven by a Swiss automatic caliber ETA 2824-A2. The ETA movement is used because it can generate the force needed to move the multiple disks, which weigh considerably more than standard hands. (Ulysse Nardin similarly selected ETA movements to power their famous Trilogy of Time pieces, the Astrolabium, Tellurium and Planetarium, as they were the only ones sufficiently powerful to drive the multiple complications).

The patented Ressence system features a large revolving dial disk on which the largest “hand” or indicator is painted, pointing to the outer 60 minute track. The entire dial on this watch revolves. Inside the main minutes disk, three smaller disks each revolve independently, indicating the hours, seconds, and a.m./p.m.

Van Cleef & Arpels has announced the opening of boutique in Paris

Luxury jewellery and watchmaker Van Cleef & Arpels has announced the opening of a dedicated watch boutique in Paris’s infamous Place Vendome.

The watchmaker, which aims to make timepieces that are as finely crafted and luxurious as its jewellery designs, has opened a boutique which it has dubbed Le Temps Poétique.

The store will sell only Van Cleef’s timepiece collections. It has been styled to be contemporary, but has a nod to the first boutique opened by Alfred Van Cleef and Estelle Arpels in 1906.

The interior design is the work of designer Patrick Jouin, in the same spirit as the Haute Joaillerie areas that he also created in the flagship boutique at 22, Place Vendôme. Jouin, an interior designer and scenographer, set up his own agency in 1998. He was the interior designer of Gilt at the New York Palace, and French celebrity chef Alain Ducasse’s restaurants: the Plaza Athénée and Le Jules Verne at the Eiffel Tower.

In Spring 2010 an exhibition of his work entitled “The substance of design” was shown at the Pompidou Centre in Paris. Van Cleef & Arpels entrusted him with the scenography of its exhibition Set in Style at Cooper Hewitt National DesignMuseumin New-York, which has been running since February.

His elegantly understated and pure lines make the most of the space the new boutique has to offer, which includes three floors and a reception room on the ground floor.

The watch workshop is housed in the basement, and there is a private area on the first floor for
a more exclusive welcome. The boutique will pay homage to Van Cleef’s fine jewellery boutiques through the use of pinkish beige tones, natural polished wood, lacquered wood, leather and nickel.

RADIOMIR HISTORY

Radiomir range consists of the Radiomir and Radiomir Black Seal®, which reproduce the design of the first Panerai watch, created in 1938 for the Royal Italian Navy.

The Radiomir was characterized by its large size and water-resistant case, the legibility of the dial underwater, its robustness in extreme conditions of use, and a reliable movement. Presented in 1997 in the Replica version, an edition limited to 60 units, the Radiomir became a rarity much sought after by collectors throughout the world for the restrained elegance of its design, with its cushion case, wire loop strap attachments and for the technical features of the mechanisms used: reliable haute horlogerie movements.

The Radiomir is available with a case 45 mm in diameter. The metals used are special AISI 316 L steel (designation indicating a steel alloy of the highest quality that is completely free of phosphorus and absolutely stainless) and 18 ct solid pink gold.

The Radiomir Black Seal® is a - time only - watch of generous size (45 mm) made from AISI 316L steel or black ceramic. This model is equipped with the calibre OP XI, a hand-wound haute horlogerie mechanical movement with a col de cygne regulation system. The Panerai Radiomir Black Seal® watch in ceramic perfectly blends the dual spirit of Panerai watches : the strong association with the past and with history combined with continual reasearch into the most advanced technical solutions. Black is a traditional colour for Panerai which in the past had already created watches with cases with PVD treatment. The result is interesting both from the technical point of view and from the purely aesthetic angle: the ceramic used is zirconium oxide and it is moulded from powder using a process of isostatic pressure (instead of being cast as is the normal practice). In this way all the positive features of this material are enhanced: its extreme hardness (up to five times greater than steel), its strong resistance to a wide range of temperatures, and the fact that when worn for long periods the watch does not become scratched, damaged or corroded. Also, ceramic formed in this way takes on a more homogenous appearance than that resulting from the traditional method of casting the material.
