Chess is an ancient board game of strategy and tactics played by millions of people around the world. The game’s ongoing popularity is owed in part to the myriad possibilities of how a match can unfold, which is dependent on the mastery of strategies and maneuvers.

Like a watch, chess is portable: all that is required is a chessboard and a set of pieces called chessmen, which can be toted easily from one place to another. And like mechanical watchmaking, chess has an innate connection to several branches of mathematics making it an apt theme for watch design.

The GV2 Scacchi is a men’s collection of chess-themed watches — Scacchi is an Italian word for chess. Each Scacchi watch features a substantial 46 mm case made from stainless steel. The caseback boasts a round checkerboard engraved pattern as well as a small aperture to glimpse the movement’s winding rotor. The sides of the case are fluted, as is the head of the crown, which resembles a rook — an important chessman.

The current GV2 Scacchi collection contains six versions: three with a black-and-white checkered chessboard dial, and three more with a solid black dial. Both dials are available in one of three cases: stainless steel case with black IP bezel, black IP case and bezel, and rose gold IP case with black IP bezel. The design of the bezel features checkered squares cast at contrasting angles.

Scacchi checkered dials resemble a chessboard from a bird’s-eye view. In addition to the board, the design features a red king’s crown at 12 o’clock, a red queen’s crown at 6 o’clock, red knights (represented by horse heads as they do in the game) at 2 and 9 o’clock, and white pawns at the remaining hours. The hour and minute hands are also shaped like chess pieces, probably bishops, although they could also be variants of the king or queen since chessmen have numerous forms from one set to another.

Variants with the solid black dial retain the red crown at 12 o’clock, but use Roman numerals as hour markers instead of chessmen to create a more traditional look and feel. The date function at 3 o’clock is mutual to every Scacchi model.

Every GV2 Scacchi watch contains a Swiss made self-winding movement, a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating and a black leather calfskin strap, which pairs well with the watch’s black bezel. Scacchi watches are water resistant to a maximum of 165 feet and each variant is a limited edition.

It is not a surprise that one of Manhattan’s most prominent residences became the namesake for one of Gevril’s most prestigious timepieces.

When Alva Vanderbilt hired prominent architect Richard Morris Hunt to build her Fifth Avenue chateau, she was determined to make the home a showplace. It was. The spectacular mansion remained one of Manhattan’s most prominent addresses from 1883 until it was ultimately demolished in 1926.

This new design from Gevril was inspired by one of the oldest streets in America.

Manhattan’s historic Washington Street first appeared on maps as early as 1797. With spectacular views of Manhattan Bridge and proximity to the famous Fulton Fish Market, the World Trade Center, and the innovative High Line linear park, the street has long been a focal point of activity in Lower Manhattan. Alberto Ascari’s reputation for precision and accuracy helped make him one of the greatest racing drivers of all time. The same attributes help define the superlative Gevril timepiece created in his honor.

Alberto Ascari is a racing legend. This multitalented Italian driver was a two-time Formula One World Champion with back-to-back titles in 1952 and 1953. He also won the legendary Mille Miglia open road endurance race in 1954 and even competed in the Indianapolis 500.

After his untimely death in 1955, Ascari was posthumously inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame and even had a street in Rome named in his honor. Gevril’s Tribute to New York’s Radio Row

Much of the New York skyline was erected during the Roaring Twenties, and with that boom came a multitude of districts and businesses to support the prospering economy. One district, located in the city’s Lower West Side, was known as Radio Row; it comprised several blocks of mostly electronics stores with Cortlandt Street at its epicenter.

For 40 years Radio Row was the place for New Yorkers to source parts for radios and later televisions. Most of Radio Row was eventually razed in the mid-’60s to make way for the World Trade Center. Now however, the once-great thoroughfare is the subject of a new Gevril timepiece – the Cortland.

The Cortland is another in Gevril’s line of dressy men’s watches, a complicated version of the stylish Gevril Park, with which it shares its overall appearance and fundamental design qualities. Similarities include the 39 mm stainless steel case with screw-down crown and the highly detailed dial; specifically, the guilloche-style engraving, a seconds track bordered with scalloped edges and a date window at 3 o’clock.

The large, legible Roman numerals and pomme tipped hands swoop up years of history and celebrate the golden age of watchmaking. As do the watch’s two additional complications: a 24-hour sub-dial that records a second time zone, and a moon-phase register to track the changing position of the moon.

There are two dial colors: silver or black. Black-dial models are paired with silver-color hands while the silver-dial models employ silver or gold IP hands. The case and bezel are both polished stainless steel, as is the bracelet. And there is a variation of the case and bracelet in yellow gold IP stainless steel.

Another highlight of the Cortland is the case back: it features an engraving of a 1908 scene along Cortlandt Street, with the Glen Island Hotel in the foreground and the Singer Building in the distance (the highest building in the world at the time). The engraving also indicates the watch’s limited edition number – each variation is one in a series of 500.

Absolute Gevril

Most collectors are familiar with the Gevril tradition of crafting sophisticated, Swiss made gentlemen’s watches with New York City themes. These include classics such as the ultra-elegant Avenue of Americas and sporty Tribeca chronograph. The new Gevril Park collection maintains this longstanding custom, named after Park Avenue – one of New York City’s iconic grand boulevards – which reaches from Union Square in lower Manhattan and stretches north up the city’s east side, past Central Park, through Harlem and beyond.

Like their Park Avenue namesake, Park timepieces have great range – they are refined dress watches that also wear well in more informal scenarios. This flexibility comes down to strap and bracelet options; when mounted on alligator-patterned leather straps, Gevril Park watches are as dressy as can be; but mount them on polished beaded bracelets, and they’re ready for an even wider array of settings and activities.

The dial has numerous enduring elements to admire, all of which speak to the art of fine watchmaking. The central area has a distinguished circular guilloche-style engraving, while the surrounding brushed ring provides a strong contrasting base for the large black Roman numerals.

At the outer edge of the dial, the seconds track is set off by delicate scalloped ridges. And the hands – pomme style blued steel – are abundantly complementary to the dial’s old-world aesthetics. The Park’s sole complication is a date display, which appears in a neatly framed aperture at 3 o’clock.

The mid-size 39 mm polished case is appropriate for a dress watch and still large enough to meet contemporary case trends. The design is symmetrical and unembellished, as not to distract the eye away from the details of the dial. The lugs extend and sharply tilt to match the end links of the bracelet and also to create a clean line for the strap.

A Gevril logo is embossed on the fluted screw-down crown. Even more detail appears on the Park’s caseback, which features an engraving of a Park Avenue panorama in addition to the text “Individually Swiss Handcrafted” and the watch’s limited edition number (each variation in the Park collection is one of 500).

There are three case-and-dial variations. The first is a silver dial with a stainless steel case; the second is a black dial with a stainless steel case; and the third is a silver dial with yellow gold IP stainless steel case. The silver- and black-dial models come mounted on a choice of the aforementioned stainless steel beaded bracelet with a double-folding deployant clasp, or on a black alligator-pattern leather strap with deployant folding clasp.

Models with yellow gold IP stainless steel cases have silver dials and the option of a yellow gold IP stainless steel bracelet or brown alligator-pattern leather strap. Gold IP case versions also feature matching gold IP hands.

Macchina Del Tempo literally means “time machine” in Italian. The aptly named GV2 Macchina Del Tempo definitely looks like something Christopher Lloyd might have worn in Back to the Future. This retro-inspired time machine tells the time in an innovative and compelling new way.

New Territory, Same Fortis Expertise

After more than a century of watchmaking, Fortis can cite several years in its history that are significant to the establishment of its reputation as a leader in the design of fine timepieces. Years like 1943, when Fortis introduced the water resistant Fortissimo; or 1987, the year Fortis launched its trend-setting Fortis Flieger Chronograph; and 1994, when a Fortis watch made its first orbit around the earth aboard the MIR space station.

Fortis introduced its newest collection – Terrestis – in Basel earlier this year, and in doing so added 2015 as another watershed year in the brand’s history. The design is part nostalgia and part opulence, beginning with a straightforward case that aims to highlight the dial with its thin polished bezel and discreet curved lugs. At 40 mm in diameter and 8 mm in height, it’s designed to have a low profile and slide comfortably under a shirt cuff. And the case is available in one of two metals: polished stainless steel or solid 5N rose gold.

There are two dial variants for each metal: an “a.m.” version of silver-opaline and a “p.m.” version of anthracite, the first representing day (light) and the latter representing night (dark). Aside from the a.m. versus p.m. background coloration, the dials of all four 19Fortis models are almost identical. The pattern at the center of the dial is described as “pleated texturing,” meant to convey the qualities of a perfectly “pressed tuxedo shirt,” which speaks to the watch’s place among gentlemen.

Moving outward, applied rose-gold-coated Roman numerals at 12, 2, 4, 8 and 10 o’clock are interspersed with similarly coated dot hour markers. A small minute-and-second track at the outside of the dial features Arabic numbers at five-minute increments, in pleasant contrast to the large and sparsely populated Romans.

The watch’s baton-style hour and minute hands are also coated with 5N rose gold, with the hour hand reaching just to the outer edge of the central pleated pattern and the minute hand extending further to the minute-and-second track. The silver-opaline dial version features one significant difference – a blued sweeping seconds hand, another nod to traditional watchmaking and a striking focal point. Models with anthracite dials have a rose-gold-coated seconds hand instead. The 19Fortis features a single complication – the date – aptly framed in a tidy window at 6 o’clock.

More blued steel is visible through the window on the caseback, where the blued screws of the Swiss made ETA 2892-A2 automatic movement appear. The winding rotor is engraved with the Fortis emblem and features perlage circular graining to match the bridges below. The caseback employs six screws to fasten it to the front of the case.

19Fortis watches are paired with one of two strap styles, dressy alligator-patterned leather with matching parallel stitching or more casual grained leather with white parallel stitching. A Fine Ensemble from Fortis

Watches in the Fortis Terrestis collection are inspired by designs of the 1930s and ’40s. They are functional, elegant and thoughtfully detailed. The Fortis Orchestra is one style under the Terrestis umbrella, and perhaps the most distinguished of the entire collection.

Fortis also added its new smaller and more discreet crown to the Orchestra in keeping with the watch’s refined personality. The Fortis logo is embossed atop. But the most outstanding feature of the case is the droplet-shape lugs – an evocative and graceful link to a bygone era of watchmaking. In addition to their debonair appearance, the lugs are angled down slightly to accommodate the strap and to fit comfortably on the wrist.

Six large polished screws secure the Orchestra’s caseback, at the center of which is a glass window to view the movement. Two dial variants exist currently: one silver-opaline “a.m.” model and one anthracite “p.m.” model, essentially one white and one black. The dial arrangement is luxurious and balanced. Its edge gently domes around the perimeter creating shadow and depth. Minimal text appears.

The seconds hand sub-dial, centered vertically above 6 o’clock, is recessed with an engraved pattern of concentric circles. A date window sits neatly at the base of the sub-dial. The raised hour markers at 3, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock, as well as the watch’s three hands all share attributes: they are consistently narrow, without taper and coated with 5N rose gold. In all, the dial is pleasing to the eye and utterly melodious.

A New Sport Version of a Gevril Classic

Most people with an eye for fine watches are familiar with Gevril’s Avenue of Americas collection, the jewel in the brand’s crown since 2001. Like other Gevril collections, these watches are named after a famous New York landmark, in this case a prominent lower Manhattan thoroughfare called Avenue of the Americas, also known as Sixth Avenue.

Until now the Avenue of Americas lineup consisted primarily of highly refined dress watches. This year, however, Gevril is adding a slightly more casual version with the introduction of the men’s Avenue of Americas Sport. Even at a distance the overall look of the watch remains unmistakable, with a rectangular curved case measuring 44 x 34 mm, large scripted numerals and art deco style.

Two variations comprise the Avenue of Americas Sport collection, each a limited edition release of 500 pieces worldwide. The first has an IP black stainless steel case; the second has an IP “gun metal” stainless steel case.

The big difference in the appearance of the Avenue of Americas Sport versus other Avenue of Americas watches is the design of the dial. Unlike previous editions that have numeral markers at every hour, the Sport model has numerals only at 12 and 6 o’clock. The remaining hour markers are represented by luminous white bars, proportional to the numerals and stemming from the dial’s circular core. An open date wheel, exposed in four sections, is the focal point. The current date is marked at 4 o’clock by a small two-prong fork affixed by way of a hexagonal screw, one of four such screws connecting the center plate above the date wheel. At the center of this plate is an engraved pattern featuring a circular web, which complements the engraved concentric ring pattern on the outer part of the dial.

The hour and minute hands are also much sportier, with wide skeletonized bodies and large luminous triangular tips that are easy to read, day or night. A red sweeping seconds hand adds a burst of color on the otherwise tonal palette.

The introduction of the Sport collection means there is now an alternative within the Avenue of Americas lineup for those who want to own a less formal version of this classic timepiece. The look is quintessential Avenue of Americas, including familiar components such as the padded leather calfskin strap with tang buckle, anti-reflective sapphire crystal and Swiss made automatic movement visible through an exhibition caseback. The Revamped and Re-energized Gevril Tribeca

In the late 1990s Gevril released one if its most recognizable models – the Tribeca – named after the lower Manhattan neighborhood below Canal Street, which today is one of the most prestigious areas in all of New York. Gevril’s Tribeca was a triple-register chronograph with a design that evoked a look made popular in the ’60s and ’70s – a look so enduring, it is more popular now than ever before.

This year Gevril is releasing an updated version of the men’s Tribeca. At a glance, the overall look of the watch appears to be almost the same. But a closer inspection reveals a number of key changes including, first and foremost, the case diameter: the new Tribeca hits the contemporary sweet spot of 42 mm compared to the previous 37 mm, which many today would classify as small.

The new Tribeca also has different case and dial combinations than its predecessor. The stainless steel versions have black or white dials, and come mounted on black leather straps with contrasting stitching and prong buckles or on stainless steel bracelets with deployant buckles. Similarly, the models with IP gold cases have white or black dials and come mounted on brown leather straps or on IP gold bracelets. Every model has the customary Tribeca black bezel equipped with a tachymeter scale for use with the chronograph in measuring elapsed time.

There are other subtle differences with the case construction, too. Gone are the visible lug holes on the outside of the case, which are replaced instead with solid, more refined “no-hole” lugs. Acrylic crystal is replaced by harder, scratch-resistant sapphire. And the screw-down crown and pushers feature more detailing: a crosshatch pattern decorates the tops of the pushers while the crown has fluting around the base and a pattern along the top. The watch’s screw-down capability supports its water resistance rating of 330 feet.

On the dial, the sweeping arrow-tip chronograph seconds hand remains, as do the luminous hands and the square-foot indices in the sub-dials. A new addition is the appearance of the name Tribeca above the 6 o’clock sub-dial written in a font reminiscent of English Towne, which many will find familiar as the nameplate font of the New York Times. Also new on the dial are the case-matching gold- or silver-colored accents.

Internally, the new Tribeca eschews the mechanical movement found in the old model for a Swiss quartz Ronda 5030D. The switch represents a move toward greater accuracy and also adds a date function, which was conspicuously absent from the earlier edition.

Gevril shows confident restraint in its update of the Tribeca, preserving the best elements of the original ’90s offering rather than making sweeping changes. But an essential update to the case size means the new Tribeca is better suited to contemporary style, and the addition of a Swiss quartz movement means the watch is more durable and affordable.

When Fortis decides to update an icon, everything has to be perfect.

The Spacematic name has a long and illustrious history. Earlier editions of this iconic watch were favored by several of the original Mercury astronauts and the continuing success of this historic timepiece led Fortis to develop enduring ties with space exploration that continue to this day.

The Spacematic Pilot Professional takes space proven elements from the Fortis Flieger Collection and uses them to create the perfect aviator timepiece. This superlative watch is highly legible, extremely durable, and provides the accuracy and reliability that aviators depend on. A proven Swiss made 25-jewel ETA 2836-2 automatic movement powers the Spacematic Pilot Professional. The rugged 316L stainless case is water resistant to 335 feet and includes a professional screw down threaded stainless steel caseback. To improve water resistance there is also a screw down crown.

A scratch resistant sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating on both sides protects the oversize aviator style dial. The bright white Arabic numbers and square dot indices are coated with a Superluminova material that has a highly visible green afterglow. As an added bonus, a convenient day/date window at 3 o’clock provides a choice of indicating the day in either English or German.

Two versions of the Spacematic Pilot Professional Collection are available. The first has a brushed stainless case that looks great with an available solid Fortis stainless steel bracelet. The second version is finished with a black PVD coating that provides a stealthy look when fitted with the available black rubber strap. A luxurious top stitched premium leather strap is also available if you prefer. Like all Fortis timepieces, the Spacematic Pilot Professional comes with a two-year manufacturer’s warranty.

The classic simplicity of this inspired design is a tribute to the beauty and sophistication of its Danish namesake.

Holstebro has long been known as an important Danish cultural center. The picturesque city has a rich and varied cultural life, enhanced by a multitude of theaters, museums and outdoor sculptures, including Alberto Giacometti’s famous Woman on the Cart. The popular Holstebro Convention and Culture Center hosts over 100 cultural events each year and is visited by more than 100,000 people.

With this strong cultural heritage, it is not surprising that this historic town in Western Jutland became the namesake for one of the most artful Johan Eric timepiece collections.
