MeisterLin LB 2 Superluminova

The MeisterLin series is exclusively made to commemorate Stadlin’s time in the Forbidden City, where he was instructing hundreds of eunuchs in the art of watchmaking and clockmaking.

At first glance, I am entirely taken in at how refreshing the dial looks. I have never seen a dial design as unique as the Meister Lin. It does not look anything inferior in terms of quality nor design.

A very clean and crisp look, the Meister Lin moves on the reliable swiss Renata quartz movement. (though I really prefer to have mechanical movement instead) I am pleased to know that the function is also a new patent which goes to show we have never seen any watch like this in the market.

One may wonder what does the characters on the dial means. The 12 characters represent the 12 Animal Zodiac signs in the Chinese calendar. Each character signifies a two-hour period, and thus a 24-hour day is divided into twelve equal periods, with each period being represented by a Zodiac.

The Chinese Zodiac is based on a twelve year cycle --- each year being represented by an animal that imparts distinct characteristics to its year.

Many Chinese believe that the year of a person's birth is the primary factor in determining that person's personality traits, physical and mental attributes and degree of success and happiness throughout his lifetime. Actually, in China, this is just an alternative way to say how old you are.

Chinese astrology has a history of more than 3,000 years. Ancient Chinese people invented the 10 Heavenly Stems and 12 Earthly Branches for chronological purposes. However, since most people were illiterate, 12 animals were designated to symbolize the 12 Earthly Branches in order to be better remembered. These lucky animals are rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig successively.

The sequence of the Zodiac animals are as follow:

1) 子 (zi) hours ruled by the Rat : 11:00pm to 1:00am
2) 丑 (chou) hours ruled by the Ox : 1:00am to 3:00am
3) 寅 (yin) hours ruled by the Tiger : 3:00am to 5:00am
4) 卯 (mao) hours ruled by the Hare : 5:00am to 7:00am
5) 辰 (chen) hours ruled by the Dragon : 7:00am to 9:00am
6) 巳 (si) hours ruled by the Snake : 9:00am to 11:00am
7) 午 (wu) hours ruled by the Horse : 11:00am to 1:00pm
8) 未 (wei) hours ruled by the Sheep : 1:00pm to 3:00pm
9) 申 (shen) hours ruled by the Monkey : 3:00pm to 5:00pm

Hence, if the time is now 830pm, it would be the hour of the Dog. This is a clever way of knowing if it is day or night time without the need of a having a day/night indicator.

The Meister Lin watch has a second hand, denoted as the red arrow, to read the corresponding Chinese hour of the day.

The mineral crystal is exceptionally clear which enhances the beauty of the dial even more. Turning is around to the back, I am equally enthralled by the beautiful Stadlin hallmark engraved at the back steel plate, screwed down with 6 screws. “Kaiserlicher Hofuhrmacher” – a title aptly suitable for Stadlin – which means the “Imperial Horologer”.

Rightfully so, for 33 years during his surviving years, Stadlin has shared many close moments with the Emperor, manufacturing numerous works of art that can only be now viewed in private collections and museums.

The dial is also coated with Superluminova, which illuminates brightly in darkness after sufficient activation in light. Thus, in darkness, you know that your watch will look outstanding, as it is not the hands that brightened like in most watches but the entire dial which does!!

Another advantage with Superluminova is that its lifespan is much longer than some other popular illuminating material in the market, though Superluminova will not last long per illumination in comparison. Superluminova is also a safe material as it does not contain any radioactive substance.

Measuring a classic 40mm size, on a polished steel case, this Meister Lin 2, Superluminova timepiece should not fail to impress and interest your horology pursuits.
