In February 2009, Toei announced that they would begin rebroadcasting Dragon Ball Z as part of the series' 20th anniversary celebrations. The series premiered on April 5, 2009, under the name Dragon Ball Kai, with the episodes remastered for, featuring updated opening and ending sequences, and a rerecording of the vocal tracks by most of the original cast. They were also re-edited to more closely follow the manga, resulting in a faster moving story, and damaged frames removed. As such, it is a "new" series created from the original Dragon Ball Z footage.

Dragonball Kai is a series currently being developed to fit the Dragonball Z Manga written by Akira Toriyama. Db Kai will be completely re-recorded by most of its old voice-over team and will be re-drawn for a more sharper quality picture, It is also being made is 16:9 Wide-screen format.

The series will feature approximately 100 Episodes instead of the usual 291 to keep the storyline as close as possible to the Original Manga.

Dragonball Evolution is an upcoming 2009 American live-action film adaptation of the Dragon Ball media franchise being produced by 20th Century Fox. The story centers around the adventures of the lead character, Goku, from his childhood into adulthood. The film began development in 2002, and is directed by James Wong and produced by Stephen Chow. It is scheduled for release on April 8, 2009. Actor Justin Chatwin was cast as Goku, and James Marsters will be portraying Lord Piccolo, the antagonist of the film.

Son Goku (孫悟空, Son Gokū, addressed only as Goku in most English adaptations) is a fictional character from the Dragon Ball universe created by Akira Toriyama as the main protagonist for the media franchise.

He is based from Sun Wukong, a central character in Journey to the West but Toriyama changed some of his characteristics to be more original. Goku is introduced as an odd, monkey-tailed boy who practices martial arts and possesses superhuman strength. As the story unfolds, he is actually revealed to be from a fictional race of extraterrestrials called Saiyans, said to be the strongest warriors within the fictional universe.

Goku also made cameo appearances in Toriyama's self-parody series Neko Majin Z and also starred in all the films, specials and video games from the series.
