Sexy ex-Hustle star Jaime, 33, has ramped up the already red-hot temperature since joining the hit series based in ancient Rome.

Sex mad social climber ... Gaia
John, 48 - who plays wealthy gladiator academy boss Quintus Lentulus Batiatus - said: "You wouldn't think the show could get any further down the line but it's shocking. It's truly unbelievable.
Drugs

"There is loads of gore and even more sex.
"Jaime Murray is a real bad influence and she's the one that gets the House of Batiatus going.
"There are drugs and orgies."
The second series is called Spartacus: Gods Of The Arena.
The drama follows the bloody history of the House of Batiatus in the city of Capua before the arrival of iconic slave leader Spartacus.
John's character owns a ludus, or gladiator academy, and is married to cunning Lucretia, played by Lucy Lawless, 42 - former star of Xena: Warrior Princess.
Jaime - Stacie Monroe in BBC drama Hustle - has joined as Lucretia's close friend and sex-mad social climber Gaia, below right.

Four Weddings And A Funeral star John insists the new series will raise even more eyebrows than the first.
He said: "There is one scene where we have an orgy. It's shown as a kind of cool, drug-induced montage, so we needed lots of different sexual positions.
"You can show people having sex, but it's not that easy to find that many different ways.
"There are the two obvious ones - then you sort of run out of ideas.
"We got on the internet and had a look at some stuff for inspiration.
"But some of those positions hurt! It can be hard to get into some of them.
"It was kind of interesting." Scotsman John also revealed how he got red wine in his eyes during one sex scene - and suffered for his art.
He said: "If you're ever in an orgy and someone's like, 'Here, have a bit of Pinot Noir', just fill your cup first - don't try and suck it off someone's body.
"Because, honestly, it stings! It was really sore."

Red-hot Romans ... John, Jaime and Lucy in sex scene from new series
On his numerous nude scenes, John reaveled: "You never get used to it.
"There's me and then there's all the good-looking guys, so it's kind of odd."
Attitudes

Despite the frolics, John insists the show is an historical drama accurately portraying life in Roman times.
He said: "It isn't at all salacious in a pornographic way.
"It tells the story and informs the audience of the world they're in, what their characters are like and what their attitudes are to each other, to slaves and to sex."
SPARTACUS: Gods Of The Arena starts on Sky1 on March 21.

'Spartacus: Blood and Sand': Q&A with John Hannah

The series revels in gore, sex and drama and it became something of a cult hit. It's a while until new episodes will hit our screens, but if you need your gladiator fix in the meantime you'll be pleased to hear that the season one DVD is out on Monday! To celebrate, we called up cast member John Hannah to chat about the show, new Spartacus Liam McIntyre and those sex scenes! There are some season one spoilers but they're marked, so read on...
Obviously the DVD's coming out on Monday - for people who haven't seen Spartacus: Blood and Sand, tell us what it's about.
"It's a kind of epic soap structured around the facts of Spartacus that we know. There are little facts that we know, little bullet points along the way that we do know about Spartacus - the man, the myth. And what they've done is created a little imagined show about the world that he might have lived in and what he might have gone through on his journey."

What about your character Batiatus?
"I think he's great. I love him. In spite of everything in the world and the universe and the gods and the fates colliding and coming against him, he still manages to pick himself up and get a new plan and move forward. He's never overwhelmed by how crap everything is for him. I just love that about him."

But do you think he's a bit villainous?
"Yeah!"

Is that what you enjoyed about playing him - the evil side?
"I never saw it so much as evil personified in an objective way but more about how he responds to the things that happen to him. And he responds in a way that is acceptable, I think."

There are a lot of sex scenes in Spartacus - were you ever nervous about those?
"Yeah, it's always difficult approaching those. Difficult and sort of awkward. But at the same time you want it to be creative. You want it to have a reason and a purpose. I think in the second episode there's quite a famous scene - I think nobody will ever have seen anything like that before. But what it does, I think, is it tells you everything you need to know about the world that we live in, who these characters are, how they feel about the people that they're dealing with - the slaves, their wives, all of that. I just think it works a treat. I think it's absolutely great."

You mentioned being creative - I read that you had to keep coming up with more and more sexual positions because there is so much sex in the show. Is that true?
"We did! In the prequel [Spartacus: Gods of the Arena] there's an orgy scene, a sort of threesome scene I suppose. We were shooting this sequence, which was part of a montage a la Godfather, that was going in against some killings and what not. You're not making a porn movie, so it's not like that's what your aiming for. You have to make it continue to tell a story and at the same time do it in a way that's true to your character and stuff. So you do the obvious things that you would sort of do, and then you go, 'Well, what shall we do next? We've got another three minutes of scene to come up with here - what are we going to do next?'"

The sex and violence in Spartacus has caused a bit of controversy - what do you make of that?
"You know, it's not for everyone. Some people are offended by men wearing shorts on the golf course - go figure! If you don't like it, don't watch it. It's on late. Certainly, in terms of the DVD, no-one's going to accidentally come up and have to watch it not meaning to. And if they do, they're a bloody idiot. Your kids should certainly never be allowed to watch it at the moment, that goes without saying. Like anything, it's like, 'Use your brain!'"

Why do you think Spartacus has been such a hit?
"Because it's f**king awesome! I mean, it really is awesome. I think ultimately - to be serious, and this probably doesn't sound as exciting as anyone would think - but I think seriously it tells great stories. I think the sex and the violence are terrific. It's got a great stylish, pyrotechnic look about it. Obviously, it's brilliantly designed, it looks amazing. But I think people would get bored with that pretty quickly if there was no story to be told. So I think you've got to say, 'Well, it's got to be the story then, hasn't it?' I think the writing is really good. I think the writing is a bit underestimated. It comes in under the radar. You see the violence, you see the sex, it's all very flashy. [But] you watch one episode and by the time you get into the second episode I think you're going to be hooked on the story and what everybody's up to and all of that."

You mentioned the writing - the language in the show is quite unusual. Was it hard for you to get into that?
"It was hard to learn, for sure. Hard to learn, but actually great to say. I really loved it. Like I say, it was tricky. It did take a lot of work the night before to get through it, to learn it and to be able to learn it in a way that sounds like you're just saying it - you're just talking to your wife and talking about what you're going to be doing - rather than some kind of wooden, old, Shakespearean-type delivery. But I loved it. It really just lived in your mouth and flew off the screen, I think."

SPOILER QUESTION - You mentioned the prequel earlier - at the end of the first season of Spartacus Batiatus dies, so were you pleased to be able to go back for the prequel?
"I was always going to be coming back for some flashbacks. What happened when Andy [Whitfield] got ill [with non-Hodgkin lymphoma] was that they turned their flashbacks into its own little story, so that's why the prequel came out."

SPOILER QUESTION - Were you pleased to be able to return?
"Yeah. I was definitely sad to sort of leave it at that point [at the end of the first season]. It was a great part. I loved doing it, the people we were working with, the environment we were doing it in. It was great going back - it was a real bonus."

SPOILER QUESTION - You mentioned the original plan was for you to appear in flashbacks in the second season - is that still the case? Will we be seeing Batiatus again?
"No, because those flashbacks have been wrapped up with the prequel. So no, those stories have been told."

Was it interesting playing an earlier and different version of Batiatus in the prequel?
"Yeah. That was really fascinating to approach that and to wonder, 'Is evil made? Does it become evil?' It goes through all the theories of how your character might have developed, how it might have got to that point, what did you do earlier on etc. But ultimately once I got the scripts you do what actors do and that is you play what's on the page. So yeah, you can think about it a lot, but the bottom line is you get on screen and you play the scripts between the actors."

You worked with Jaime Murray a lot in the prequel - did you enjoy that?
"She was great. It was nice to have somebody British there! I sort of missed that the first time, so it was nice to have somebody there that sort of understood just that sense of British humour and culture. She was a good laugh, Jaime, she was good to work with."

What do you make of the new Spartacus Liam McIntyre, who's taking over from Andy Whitfield?
"He seems like a nice guy from what I've heard. He seems good, he looks great, he looks the part. I'm sure a lot of people put a lot of effort into finding somebody to fill Andy's leather pants. I'm sure he'll do a great job. It's great scripts and it's a dream to do so I'm sure he'll have a good time."

It will be tough to fill Andy's... well, Andy's pants!
"[Liam's] going to turn up and do his own thing and he'll do that. He's not some kid that doesn't know what he's doing. He'll do his own thing, he'll stay true to himself and to the script, and it'll be a good story. I think the audience are aware of what's happening so they'll understand that and they'll accept that within the environment."

Be a salesman - why should people buy the Spartacus DVD?
"Because there's nothing like it on television. It's a one off."

Even the style and the way it's filmed are unusual.
"It's classic. These guys - the technicians and stuff - they did the Lord of the Rings movies and everything so they're top quality film technicians. We filmed it in New Zealand and they were available because there wasn't another film happening, so it was a great bonus for the show that guys of that talent were available."

What else have you got coming up?
"Nothing! I'm unemployed. I'm looking for something that I can do after having done Spartacus! There's not much around."

Has it raised the bar for you?
"It has, yeah. Certainly having done that, it's not something that you then want to just go off and do some little procedural drama or whatever. It has raised the bar for what I'm going to do next, hence I'm still here waiting to find out!"

Spartacus: Blood and Sand is released on DVD on Monday, May 16.

Are you a Spartacus fan?
'Spartacus' fans, it's Friday but we don't have an episode of the Starz drama to look forward to. Feel free to curse and vent in the celebrated manner of Quintus Batiatus.

But once you're done with that, turn your thoughts to the upcoming second season of the gladiator chronicle.

Wouldn't you like to know which characters from the first season and the recently concluded prequel season will be back?

Read on to find out whether Gannicus, Crixus, Ashur, Ilythia and other characters from 'Spartacus: Blood and Sand' and 'Spartacus: Gods of the Arena' will return when the show comes back early next year.

Of course, if you don't want to know who's back and who's not, stop reading now.

As 'Spartacus' fans know, there was much bloodshed at the end of both the first season and the prequel season. But when season 2 begins, there will be a host of familiar faces for Spartacus to contend with as he leads his fellow slaves in a revolt against the Roman regime.

• As most fans know, the drama's title role has been recast. Liam McIntyre is taking over the role of Spartacus and Andy Whitfield is not returning due to his ongoing cancer battle.

• Lucretia (Lucy Lawless), who had a nasty stab wound at the end of 'Spartacus: Blood and Sand,' will nevertheless be back in season 2. "it was just a little poke in the tummy," Lucy Lawless told a recent press gathering. "Put a poultice on it, she'll be all right."

• Gannicus (Dustin Clare), a gladiator who got his freedom at the end of the prequel season, will return for the show's second season.

• Crixus (Manu Bennett), a House of Batiatus champion and, eventually, a friend to Spartacus, will return for season 2.

• Oenomaus/Doctore (Peter Mensah) will be back also. Let's face it, 'Spartacus' isn't 'Spartacus' without this magisterial man cracking his trusty whip.

• Ilythia (Viva Bianca) will return in Season 2, 'Spartacus' creator Steven S. DeKnight confirmed Friday on Twitter. I certainly don't expect this Roman noblewoman and Lucretia to be BFFs in future; as you'll recall, once Ilythia saw members of Batiatus' household beginning their murderous rampage, she ensured that Lucretia and her husband were locked inside the house with their angry slaves. I'm betting that makes for a tense reunion in future.

• Ashur (Nick E. Tarabay) will return for season 2, with lots of plots and schemes up his sleeve, no doubt.

• The character Naevia, a slave loved by Crixus, will return, but Lesley-Ann Brandt will no longer play the role. Producers are recasting Naevia, who will return in season 2.

• Mira (Katrina Law), a slave who helped Spartacus in 'Blood and Sand,' will return in Season 2.

• Vettius (Gareth Williams), a ludus owner and an enemy of Batiatus in 'Gods of the Arena,' will not return in season 2.

• Legatus Glaber (Craig Parker), Ilythia's husband and the man responsible for Spartacus' enslavement, will be back in season 2. He'll be "hot on [the] heels" of the escaped slaves, according to a story by Matt Fowler of IGN.

Ep 111 'Old Wounds' - Spartacus hovers on the brink. Meanwhile, Batiatus plots revenge against his enemies.

EPISODE RECAP

Varro’s dead body lies on a table and is splattered with dried blood and his fatal wound a reminder of the tragic decision that Spartacus is haunted with. He speaks with Doctore about his bitterness and regret and how he wishes time would reverse and he was the one to be killed. Spartacus helps carry the body and meets eyes with Aurelia. He admits to her that he was the one who took his life and she can only look down with tears as Varro viewed Spartacus as a brother.

Batiatus shares words with Lucretia and tells her he will now focus on Glaber to bring him patronage after being mocked by the Magistrate and Solonius. He discreetly leaves his wife and meets with Aulus. He tells Batiatus that he and Ashur are keeping watch of the Magistrate as he travels by road back home. Ashur secretly meets with Solonuis taking his weekly bribe money to tell of the recent activity of Batiatus. Ashur doesn’t reveal too much but expresses his concern that Batiatus has indeed gone too far with his obsession over power.

In the midst of training it is apparent that Spartacus has lost his concentration as he practices with Agron. A sense of worry overcomes Batiatus overlooking at a distracted Spartacus and he summons him to his chambers. In his skillful way of manipulation Batiatus coaxes Spartacus to fuel his vengeance at the house of the Magistrate. He wants Spartacus to embarrass the family at the gladiator games held at the Sine Missione by defeating their best gladiator. The purse for the fight will be plentiful and Spartacus wants to seize the chance to ease his heart at giving the winnings to Varro’s family. Spartacus is pleased to see that Batiatus would take such an interest to see the honorable gesture be done for Varro.

While the men take their ritual baths being scrubbed and oiled by the slaves Spartacus overhears Duro and Agron arguing over the death of Varro. Duro exclaims he would never kill his own brother at any cost and this turns Spartacus into a wild man full of uncontrollable rage. The gladiators including Crixus can see Spartacus focus deteriorating which offers opportunities to those who would like to see a strong man weakened. Spartacus is met up with Mira since she would like to raise his dire spirits but he is relentless in his overwhelming guilt.

The Magistrate awakens with blurred visions and an image that finally takes the form of Batiatus. A sack has been removed from his head and he immediately questions Batiatus to the meaning of such treatment. Batiatus shares with the Magistrate that he was humiliated by his words and that he seeks his revenge. The Magistrate shows that he is not afraid of Batiatus and will not beg for his life and that the only reason he is anything is because of Spartacus and once he falls so will he. Batiatus feels the sting of these words and lashes back with the mention of his son. Once Batiatus has returned home he is met with the news Spartacus has been stricken with a fever. He immediately sends him to the infirmary with the fear that the Magistrates words may come true. He summons Mira to attend to him and has a medic give him a concoction to hopefully take care of his fever. Spartacus is like a wild beast suffering convulsions and having to be strapped down to a bed. His body finally slips into the dream world where he has visions that gold coins are seeping through his wounds and he is made of gold which is how he feels about his place in life as monetary value. Batiatus can sense that his prized fighter is in no condition to fight in the battles at the Sine Missione and not wanting to risk his life he decides to send Crixus to fight. Upon hearing the news Crixus believes he will be able to regain his rightful title and prove that he is still the champion everyone remembers. He shares his news with Naevia and wants to share his glory with her and will be looking for her when he conquers his competitor in the arena.

The games begin at the Sine Missione and up at the pulvinus the crowd is eagerly anticipating Spartacus. The Magistrate is obviously missing and his family is starting to worry about his whereabouts since he delivers the Primus. The crowd watches the first battle between brothers Duro and Agron and once again Agron helps saves his brother’s life as he is the more gifted gladiator which leaves Duro with shame and embarrassment. The crowd is bored with the fight and they start to chant for Spartacus and for the final match to begin. Since the Magistrate will not be arriving on time Batiatus delivers the Primus and announces that Crixus will replace Spartacus but this is met with boos and disappointment. Crixus is affected by the changing nature of the crowd that once honored and loved him and turns that aggression on his opponent Perciles. They begin battle as Perciles slices through his forearm and continues to advance against Crixus. The crowd continues to boo as Crixus takes a devastating blow sending him to ground and in the hands of Perciles. He decides to strut around Crixus milking his moment of glory. Crixus regains his strength and cuts a huge gash into his stomach and then crushing his head with the explosion of brains and blood. The crowd goes wild as Crixus has returned to his champion form. He looks into the crowd to find Naevia but she is missing. A messenger approaches Batiatus and tells him that the Magistrates men were found murdered on the road and there were tracks left behind leading to the city. Batiatus takes immediate control wanting to seek out answers and calling guards to help him start a search. The Magistrate’s wife allows her son Numerius to join Batitaus on the search.

Ashur meets again with Solonius and informs him that Batiatus driven by madness had the Magistrate taken captive. Solonius follows Ashur as he leads him to the whereabouts of the Magistrate so that they may help and free him. Back at the infirmary Spartacus enters another dream that gives him images of a dead Sura and a dead Varro whispering the words “tend to the wound”. He sees images of Aulus being oiled down by Mira and then a flashback of when he claimed he was injured on his side when he was trying to save Sura’s life. All the images connect and inform him that Aulus was without wounds when he was being oiled down and that it was a lie. He awakens fueled with fire to seek out the truth amongst these evident lies. He finds Aulus on a bed with his neck wounded which occurred earlier when the Magistrate tried to escape and bite the neck of Aulus and tore off flesh. Spartacus presses the wound waking Aulus. He questions why Aulus is without wounds that he was supposed to still have that day he was defending his wife. Aulus knows he has been caught in a lie and whispers that he was simply following the command of Batiatus. Spartacus pushes harder into the wound causing his immediate death and Mira has seen all that has happened to which he asks for her silence and he will be in debt to her. Spartacus leaves the infirmary a man with a new agenda. Batiatus has returned and is pleased to see his greatest fighter alive and well. Spartacus proclaims he is himself again holding a deeper truth of vengeance yet to come.
Ep 110 'Party Favors' - Spartacus and Crixus are set up to fight in an exhibition match for Numerius' birthday - but Crixus is intent on blood.

EPISODE RECAP

Varro and Spartacus are warriors in the arena as they battle side by side as brothers. Numerius watches intently to their every move as he is accompanied by his father Magistrate Calvavius and his mother Domitia. They are also joined by Lucretia and Batatius who suggests to the family an idea for the celebration of Numerius 15th birthday. Since it is a rite of passage from boy to man Batiatus would like to have the boy stay at their residence and look after the gladiators as if they were his own to later see the best men compete against each other in an exhibition. Numerius is overcome with joy at the thought of such a spectacle for his birthday and his father is weary at what that might cost. Batiatus calms his fears and will simply put the whole event together as a favor to his friend. Meanwhile, Spartacus and Varro finally defeat their last opponent Sumo by chaining him up by the neck and pulling from both ends to decapitate him and claim victory.

Varro enters the mess hall to find his wife Aurela and son Janas. He embraces her as he was flooded with thoughts that they both might be dead. Aurela was able to fight off Titus since the gods were on her side this time but the fact that she carries his baby is haunting her luck with them after all. Varro comforts her knowing he is in regret and he will love the child if she will.

Lucretia enters a bedroom chamber to find Illythia a physical mess since she is riddled with guilt over the murder of Licinia. Lucretia presses Illythia to gather her composure before people start speculating as to her whereabouts. She will guide her in exchange for Illythia getting all the people on her wish list of guests to attend the exhibition.

Spartacus and Crixus learn that they will fight each other during the exhibition as two of the best fighters Batiatus has to offer. Batiatus warns that only bloodshed must happen but no real damage otherwise it will result in a deadly consequence if one steps too far. Varro pulls Spartacus away for a brief moment thanking him for sending Mira and saving his family. Batiatus reveals to Spartacus a statute made of his face and declares him boastfully the Bringer of Rain.

Naevia narrowly escapes being discovered after Hector questions where his missing key is and if she knows its whereabouts. Batiatus discusses with Lucretia his plans after the exhibition to approach the Magistrate on political aspirations. He wants to taunt Solonius with his endeavors but Lucretia heeds warning that although he has been stricken he may have the strength to strike back. Batiatus ignores her warnings as he has a plan of his own. Lucretia meets with Illythia and she confirms that indeed everyone from the list will be in attendance. Her attention is drawn below to the relationship between Spartacus and Varro indeed getting the wheels turning inside that head.

Naevia and Crixus sneak into the mess hall as she reveals the key taken from Hector. They embrace as Crixus will not flinch on his passion to be champion again and they make love without the knowledge of an unexpected Ashur lurking in the shadows finally finding his enemies weakness. Later that evening, Batiatus shares wine and a game with Spartacus declaring they will see greater fortune then their fathers and Lucretia is outraged to see her husband share anything with a slave.

Upon the arrival of Numerius, Batiatus wants Spartacus to attend to him. Spartacus shows him around and they spar together. Duro declares he would like to spar with Crixus but he is met with apprehension. He goes to swing at him with his sword as Crixus takes him down with little effort and bloodies him up leaving him half dead. The gladiators cheer as they respect Duro for his bravery and continuing to get back to his feet.

The steam is rising as Numerius relaxes in a hot bath. He is stirred a bit as Illythia enters with a purpose and strokes the young man’s ego before entering him in the bath naked. Outside the villa Mira follows Spartacus to thank him for the other night he defended her when Hector accused her of stealing his key. He insults her as he says he would have done it for any woman. She walks away frustrated. During the night Spartacus has a dream where he sees a dead Sura and a dead Varro and Aulus being soaked in oils by slaves. We wipe to the next day where it is announced that Spartacus will no longer compete against Crixus but Varro according to the latest choice by Numerius. Varro and Spartacus enter the arena and both share equal advances into the flesh. Spartacus is able to bring Varro to the ground and places a sword to his throat. Varro shares a laugh and raises his two fingers in forfeit. Numerius takes the editor’s role and raises his hand and lowers his thumb. Everyone is suddenly silenced since the rules were that no bodily injured would be had. Spartacus tenses his grip on the sword and is at a standstill. Magistrate Calvavius declares he will repay him for the gladiator but Spartacus should proceed with the death. Batiatus unwillingly motions for Spartacus to continue. Spartacus stands without knowing what to do he sees the guards moving towards him if he does not comply and looks down at a defeated Varro. He tells Spartacus he must continue otherwise they both will die and to look after his wife and child. He grabs Spartacus sword and lunges it into his chest halfway pleading for Spartacus to continue. Spartacus has no choice and plunges the sword deep into his chest spraying blood everywhere.

Batiatus presses the Magistrate for words on the possibility of him running for political office and is met with laughter by both he and Solonius. They both assure him that politics is left to men of better breeding and he is best as a lanista. Batiatus stands stunned but quickly changes his demeanor to revenge. A tragic Spartacus enters his cell beating the walls until the flesh peels off in sorrow over Varro. Mira comes to attend him and he pulls her closer to\him and two damaged souls become one.
Ep 109 'Whore' - Batiatus breaks the news that Spartacus is to service the richest woman in Rome.

EPISODE RECAP

Sex, intrigue and betrayal permeate life at Batiatus’ Ludus, as the triumphant Spartacus upsets the old balance of power while scheming by some behind-the-scenes players leads to tragedy.

Lucretia and her new friend Licinia make plans for Licinia’s upcoming visit to the Ludus to engage in carnal pleasure with a gladiator. Licinia chooses Spartacus, drawn by his illustrious status as champion. For her part, Lucretia’s patron Ilythia reveals her own desire for sex with a gladiator, sending Lucretia into a rage when Ilythia makes it known she wants Crixus. The injured gladiator, newly recovered from his wounds, returns to the training square, urged by Doctore to reclaim his position as the Champion of Capua, the title Spartacus now holds. His return is the subject of fascination within the gladiator ranks and in the household.

But it’s the sexual betrayals that cause the most uproar. Rich women seeking thrills, on the ready gladiators doing their duty – all of them disguised by masks – engaging in spirited Roman custom. When identities are revealed, death follows and spoiled rich girl Ilythia finds herself in a precarious, horrifying position for a woman of her status.
Episode #108

Rating: 5.0/5

Ep 108 'Mark Of Brotherhood' - Batiatus purchases a fresh batch of slaves during an auction to be trained as gladiators and ponders the idea of selling Crixus.

EPISODE RECAP

Spartacus is now fully the Champion of Capua, clearly in favor with Batiatus, held in awe by some - but still hated by those who can’t forgive Spartacus for living this long when he was clearly supposed to die. One of those is Crixus, the one-time Champion of Capua, who is still healing from the contest with Theokoles. He is none too happy to be supplanted as the top gladiator, or to hear that Batiatus is considering selling him before word gets out that he has fallen so far.

Elsewhere in the Ludus, Varro, who sold himself into the gladiator life to pay off gambling debts, has fallen back on old habits, which pains Spartacus. Upstairs, Lucretia stokes Ilythia’s growing passion for gladiatorial arts, even encouraging her friend to buy one of the newcomers, the well-endowed Segovax. Showing her appreciation, Ilythia introduces the always scheming Lucretia to her circle of friends, which includes Licinia, cousin of the richest man in Rome.

Ilithyia visits a shackled Segovax and promises her new possession that if he will attend to an errand that she requires she will see him free. This sets in motion a series of conflicts that put the very future of the House of Batiatus in question and concludes with a very public humiliation.
Episode #107

Rating: 4.5/5

Ep 107 'Great And Unfortunate Things' - Overcome by the pressure of Batiatus's control, Spartacus must make a choice: leave his past behind and assume the mantle of a champion gladiator, or die.

EPISODE RECAP

Spartacus is suffering, but Batiatus says that despite his grief they must turn their attention to the future. Batiatus declares that he can proceed to mold Spartacus into a great gladiator.

Doctore checks in on the still injured Crixus and asks the Medicus to keep him informed of his feverish condition. Lucretia tells Crixus that she unfortunately won’t be able to visit him privately down in the Ludus but will send Naevia to attend to his needs. Crixus catches Naevia’s eye at the mention of this good news.

Batiatus receives Mercato, a rich patron who comes to procure gladiators for the games he’s putting on. He’d planned to purchase the services of Crixus but seeing how his injuries have taken him out of action, his thought turns to Spartacus. With the addition of a substantial extra sum, Batiatus sees no problem with this.

Varro is shocked at seeing his wife Aurelia and son Janus. She informs him that she is with child; a child that is not Varro’s. He exits, leaving her in tears.

Spartacus informs Batiatus that he will play in the games with one condition: he will fight alone. Spartacus declares that if the gods are with him he will not fall. Batiatus reluctantly agrees to the deal but with his own condition, that if he is victorious the Thracian inside of him has to die and he must then embrace his new identity.

Spartacus waits in the chutes in the arena, dressed in Roman battle dress, clutching two swords, as six prisoners are led into the arena. The prisoners fan out to attack and Spartacus remains motionless, eyes closed, feeling the sun on his face, a man putting his fate in the gods’ hands.

Mercato is pleased with Batiatus for having put on such a good show. Batiatus enjoys the moment, shares a happy look with Lucretia. Spartacus, blood soaked and exhausted, absorbs the cheers that rain down from the stands. He throws his arms up and declares, “I Am Spartacus!” Batiatus grins from above, in triumphant satisfaction.

Rating: 4.5/5

Ep 106 'Delicate Things' - With the glory and riches reaped by Spartacus' victory in the arena, it appears that his long desired reward will be granted when Batiatus informs him that he will be reunited with his wife.

EPISODE RECAP

The rain continues to stream down, the drought a memory, and Batiatus stands before his gladiators, heralding the new day that’s come. He calls forth the Bringer of Rain, the Slayer of the Shadow of Death and the new Champion of Capua: Spartacus. The gladiators cheer wildly. The cheers carry into the infirmary, where a bloody Crixus lies on a slab, barely conscious. Batiatus strolls through his villa with Spartacus and Lucretia, making grandiose claims of the empire he aims to build. He reveals to Spartacus the stunning news that Sura has been found, recently sold to a merchant. Batiatus asserts that his promise is kept, that she is on her way to the Ludus. Spartacus is astonished, remarking on what an honorable man Batiatus is.

Even so, he tells his only friend Varro that once he is reunited with Sura, he plans for both of them to escape the Ludus, and he spells out an elaborate scheme to overcome the guards and to take advantage of the distraction at the Ludus caused by the celebration of Spartacus’ victory. For his part, Barca has his own thoughts of freedom, for himself and for his lover Pietros. As Spartacus, in full armor stands ready to implement his plans for escape and prepares to welcome Sura, his scheme painfully unravels.
Episode #105

Rating: 4.5/5

Ep 105 'Shadow Games' - Batiatus is presented with a gladiatorial opportunity of a lifetime. Spartacus and Crixus must overcome their mutual hostility to fight as a team against a legendary and unbeaten opponent.

EPISODE RECAP

With renewed hope towards finding his wife, Spartacus dedicates himself anew to training. He’ll need it, since Batiatus, desperate for patronage from Magistrate Calavius, has reluctantly agreed to pair Spartacus and his bitter enemy Crixus in a gladiatorial fight to the death with the legendary gladiator Theokoles, “The Shadow of Death.” against whom only one fighter has survived. Doctore is that man, and he tells the two fighters they must put their differences aside and fight together if they have any hope of prevailing. Crixus and Spartacus somehow have to learn to work together.

As if the prospect of losing his two best fighters isn’t enough for Batiatus to worry about, he also learns his great rival was behind the assassination attempt on his life – and so he takes steps to avenge himself. And his wife, Lucretia, is fretful that her illicit lover, Crixus, might perish in the arena, a fear shared by slave girl Naevia, who shares her own secret passion for Crixus. For her part, Lucretia must continue to face the humiliation of being childless.

The games have commenced and as the Magistrate tells the crowd about this attempt to appease the gods, to bring rain to their parched lands, underneath the spectator stands, Doctore wishes Spartacus and Crixus luck. The two fighters step out onto the sands of the arena as they are introduced, Crixus shouting out his trademark call to the crowd: “Capua, shall I begin?” The Magistrate introduces the undefeated Theokoles just as the sky darkens with clouds and the seven foot tall fighter emerges, covered in the scars of a thousand battles, holding two swords and no shield, no armor.

The fight is brutal, intense and unpredictable and by the end, only one gladiator stands.
Episode #104

Rating: 4.5/5

Ep 104 'The Thing In The Pit' - Having performed shamefully in the arena against Crixus, Spartacus is forced to fight in the Pits. Batiatus, determined to profit from Spartacus, may be at risk if his debts aren't repaid.

EPISODE RECAP

After Spartacus’s dismal fight against Crixus, Batiatus tells him no one wants to see him fight in the arena. There is, however, an option for the man who doesn’t follow rules: the place where there are none. Spartacus is hauled away, his hair shaved, his body covered in ash, sent to the fight pits. As Batiatus gets ready to leave for the pits, Lucretia frets about his safety. Batiatus assures her that though these are dangerous places, he is taking Barca as protection. Besides, the money he will make can buy water in this time of drought.

Once Batiatus is gone, Lucretia sends Naevia to fetch Crixus. On the walk up, Crixus notices that Naevia is not wearing the necklace he gave her. Before she can explain her reasons, Crixus cuts her off. Later she explains to Crixus she isn’t allowed possessions of any kind and to keep it would put them both in grave danger. Crixus, realizing his mistake and the extent of her feelings, kisses her.
Meanwhile, at the pits, Spartacus steps into the ring for a bloody battle whose only rule is to fight to the death. Spartacus wins and upon returning to the ludus tells Doctore that he will fight his way back to being a gladiator. Too late, Doctore tells him; the best Spartacus can hope for is a quick death. An ostracized Spartacus continues to win fights, but with the realization he will not survive much longer. Spartacus goes to Batiatus and offers to lose his next fight and accept certain death. In exchange, Batiatus agrees to bet heavily against him and use the money won to find Sura and bring her to the Ludus.

Spartacus steps into the ring, determined to make a good show of his death. Just as the other fighter is about to finish him off, Spartacus sees two assassins approach Batiatus. Knowing that Sura will be lost forever if Batiatus dies, Spartacus kills his opponent then the second assassin. Though Spartacus saved Batiatus’s life, he has just made his financial problems infinitely worse. Nevertheless, in gratitude for saving his life, Batiatus reinstates Spartacus as a gladiator.

Episode #103

Rating: 4.5/5

Ep 103 'Legends' - Though Spartacus proved himself during training and now wears the attire of a gladiator, his coarse attitude and relentless quest to see his wife isolates him from his fellow gladiators and Doctore.

EPISODE RECAP

Excitement ripples through the gladiators when a new festival of games is announced at the end of training. In the Villa above, it is not excitement Batiatus feels, but anger that his gladiators are only in the lesser matches. Lucretia calms his rage, stating that their party the night before will bring in more business. To that end, she holds out her hand for money, stating both she and their ludus must be dressed to impress. Begrudgingly, debt still heavy on his mind, Batiatus hands over the coins.

A few days later, when the fight card is announced, Spartacus is dismayed to find himself fighting in the lowest match against Varro, earning a mere pittance. Spartacus’ rival at the ludus, Crixus, however, fights in the primus- the best match of the day. Ashur warns him against underestimating Crixus’s ability in the ring and tells him about Crixus’s greatest fight against the twin gladiators rumored to be born of a jackal. Desperate to get into the premiere fight, Spartacus provokes Gnaeus, the gladiator slated to fight Crixus, into attacking him, unsuccessfully.

Crixus, uninterested in Spartacus’s machinations, is focused on Lucretia’s beautiful body slave Naevia, but when he attempts to speak with her, he fails miserably. He has no idea how to charm this quiet, shy girl. She takes him to Lucretia’s bedchamber where he finds his mistress anything but shy. She stands barely clothed, her largest adornment the necklace she purchased earlier. Crixus flatters her mercilessly, then satisfies her the way she demands.

At the party the night before the fight, Ilithyia wanders through the crowd with Lucretia at her side, expressing disappointment at seeing the men to be only flesh and blood, not the gods of the arena. For his part, Spartacus is still angry he has still not moved up the fight card, and so attacks Crixus in full view of the assembled guests who call for the fight to be continued in the arena the next day. Left without options, Batiatus acts as though this was his intention all along. While Varro worries for Spartacus and tells him a legend from the arena, that of Theocles, the Shadow of Death, Crixus finds Naevia in the corridor. He promises that his victory the next day is for her. True to his word, Crixus easily defeats Spartacus. Battered and bruised, Spartacus promises he will train harder. Doctore tells him it is too late.

Rating: 4.0/5

Ep 102 'Sacramentum Gladiatorum' - Enslaved in gladiatorial school, the newly christened Spartacus must try to suppress his desire for vengeance when his new master promises to reunite him with his wife.

EPISODE RECAP

Spartacus awakes in the darkness, bloodied and bruised. He reaches out to find Sura and pulls her towards him, but her cries of ecstasy turn into screams of pain as Spartacus is jolted awake to find himself instead beside a gladiator writhing in agony. Spartacus is hustled from the infirmary and thrown into the baths where he is taunted by the veteran gladiators, who explain he is in Batiatus’s ludus, a school to train gladiators. If he is lucky, he will join them in their training. If not, he will be condemned to the mines.

The next day, as Lucretia prepares for a visit from Glaber, Spartacus is initiated into his brutal new life. Doctore, the head trainer, forces Spartacus to fight Crixus, a match that ends with Spartacus face down in the sand. The training continues in the hot sun, a drought scorching all of Capua. Spartacus’ ordeal has only begun and he is yanked out of the mess hall and chained up in a detention cell. Glaber enters and tells Spartacus he raped Sura and shared her with his men before selling her to an unpleasant Syrian. He tosses a love token Spartacus gave Sura at Spartacus’s feet. Having achieved his purpose of tormenting Spartacus, Glaber sweeps out past Batiatus. Upstairs, he retrieves Ilithyia, who is intrigued by gladiators and the life of a ludus.

Spurred by his hatred and anger, Spartacus brutally attacks another recruit, prompting Doctore to complain that Spartacus is untrainable. Batiatus believes he could become a great gladiator, given the proper impetus. Having discovered that Spartacus has a wife, Batiatus promises to find her in exchange for Spartacus accepting his new life. With Batiatus’s words ringing in his head, Spartacus steps up to his final test, a training fight with Crixus. It is a close battle, but in the end, Spartacus gains the advantage. He has passed the test. He is now a gladiator and one step closer to his love.
Episode #101

Rating: 4.5/5

Ep 101 'The Red Serpent' - A Thracian warrior, enlisted by the Romans to fight, has his destiny seized by an act of rebellious violence. As punishment, he faces death by being forced to battle in the gladiatorial arena.

EPISODE RECAP

The series opens on the orgy of blood and violence that is the gladiator arena. An unnamed Thracian prisoner watches, another prisoner get torn to pieces. The Thracian’s gaze takes us from the dry, desiccated sands of Capua to the lush hills of Thrace several months before where he is saying good-bye to his wife, Sura. She tries to convince him to stay with her, but he has pledged his sword to the Roman Auxiliary. That same sword is soon embedded in a Getaen Barbarian, but it is the Roman Legate, Claudius Glaber, who rides up to claim victory at the battle’s end. Showing his authority, Glaber orders the Thracian and one of his comrades to scout the enemy lines, then dismisses them when they return with the news that the barbarians are heading west to threaten Thracian villages. That night, Glaber’s spoiled, pampered wife Ilithyia urges him to seek greater glory and the next morning when he rouses the auxiliaries, he announces they march east towards the better battle. The Thracian protests, violently, and since he knows his life is now worthless, he flees.

Returning just in time, the Thracian saves Sura from a group of barbarians. Their reunion is short-lived, however, as Glaber and the Roman soldiers catch up with them the next day. Glaber condemns Sura to a life of slavery and the Thracian to execution at the gladiatorial games.

At a feast before the games, hosted by Ilithyia’s powerful father, Senator Albinius, we meet Batiatus and his wife Lucretia, who own a ludus, the school where gladiators are trained. Batiatus is upset because only two of his gladiators were hired to fight, while his rival Solonius has eight gladiators in the games. The next day, in the arena, Glaber sends four of Solonius’s gladiators against the Thracian. Despite the uneven odds, the Thracian bravely kills them all. Though Glaber is humiliated, the crowd cheers for his release. Sensing a business opportunity, Batiatus steps forward and offers to purchase him and make him a gladiator within his ludus. Albinius consents and Batiatus names the Thracian prisoner Spartacus. As the crowd cheers for him, Spartacus is carried out, into his new life.

Spartacus: Blood and Sand represents a deliberate and entertaining mixture of gladiatorial types drawn from the Late Republican period, in which Spartacus lived, as well as the later Imperial period that contained a wider variety of fighters. While some imperial gladiatorial types, like the net and trident wielding retiarius, and certain equipment representations, involving shield shapes along with helmet and weapon styles, are not always completely historically accurate with respect the time period of Spartacus, one of the strengths in the first season is that it shows the diverse backgrounds and fighting styles that defined the evolution of gladiatorial culture throughout all phases of Roman history. Throughout the first season, Spartacus will evolve and employ a variety of weapons, armor, shields, and fighting styles that are not simply representative of a typical thraex of the Late Republican period. In some ways, as the heroic catalyst of this story, he becomes an embodiment of many different gladiatorial types during his ongoing transformation throughout the first season.

There were various paths an individual might travel that could end with the spilling of blood upon the sands of the arena for the entertainment of a frenzied crowd. During the Republic, the earliest gladiatorial types of samnis, gallus, and thraex were taken from the prisoners of war captured by Roman military actions against populations of Samnites, Gauls, and Thracians. These early gladiators seem to have been forced to fight and spill human blood at funerary events, often with equipment representative of their own ethnic origins. While the Samnite form had largely fallen away by the time of Spartacus, the thraex form endured with the influx of Thracians from the numerous Roman campaigns against Mithridates in the East, and the gallus form seems likely to have either been renamed or transformed into the murmillo type represented by Crixus. The ethnic tension visible early in episode 102 [watch epiosde 102] between Spartacus, a Thracian, and Crixus, a Gaul, portrays likely divisions within the gladiatorial culture as well as foreshadowing the murmillo vs. thraex pairing in episode 103 that was very popular in the arena.

While being sold into training as a slave was actually the most common way for one to find oneself a gladiator in the arena, in addition to the occasional impressment of condemned criminals, there were instances of freeborn men who voluntarily submitted to serve as gladiators. These auctorati, as they were eventually called, appeared in the Late Republican period and increased dramatically during the empire. In the show, the character of Varro represents this element within the gladiatorial school when discussing his background with Spartacus in episode 102. Usually driven by monetary concerns, or sometimes fame, a free person could enter into training at a gladiatorial school under terms of a contract and by taking some form of a gladiatorial oath of servitude (sacramentum gladiatorum, or sacramentum gladiatorium as it is often called). This type of voluntary oath is represented in the final scene of episode 102 and was generally modeled from a passage found in the Satyricon of Petronius where a gladiator swears to his master “to be burned, chained, beaten, or put to death by iron.” With the inclusion of these types of details, even if they are sometimes imperial in origin, the Blood and Sand season of Spartacus will explore the world of a gladiator school to a depth not seen before in either television or film.

THE “HISTORICAL” SPARTACUS

In two years, this group
of rebel slaves and freemen defeated a total of six Roman armies, three Praetors, two Consuls, and finally the Gallic legion under a Roman governor. In the end, it took the combined force of almost 12 Roman legions under three Roman commanders to bring an end to the rebellion. The “leader” of this rebellion, a Thracian gladiator, has come down through the millennia as a legend, a symbol of revolution for the oppressed and the triumph of the ultimate underdog.
Plutarch states that the Thracian was from a nomadic tribe, possibly the Maedi, and had been brought to Rome with his wife, a priestess of Dionysus, and sold into slavery. Appian, on the other hand, states that while he had once served with Roman soldiers, he had become a prisoner and sold as a gladiator; it is Appian who writes the enigmatic phrase “his body was never found”, warning his readers that Spartacus may yet live to strike again. Florus presents the Thracian as a mercenary who had deserted from the Roman military and become a bandit, and then captured and sold as a gladiator. With Plutarch writing in the 1st century AD, almost 150 years after the rebellion, and Appian and Florus in the early to mid 2nd century AD, one might be struck by the fact that as more time passes, our Roman authors seem to become more and more informed on the background of this famous slave.

It is Spartacus’ status as a slave that defined how the Romans saw his origin- prior to the rebellion, no one cared who he was or where he came from. Only after his armies had shaken the Republic and threatened Rome itself was there any reason to take note. In fact, one can even call into question his “Thracian” background; his role as a Thraex in the arena was, for the Roman mind anyway, grounds enough for placing his origin in Thrace. But, for the Romans, Thrace was a backwards land, its people the prototypical barbarians- large, hairy, unwashed, uneducated, and lacking in any of the culture and civility of “polite” Roman society. Among Greek historians, a story was continually passed around that the Thracians practiced divination by throwing men onto upright spears, and divined the will of the gods by how the man landed; if he missed the spears completely, or survived the ordeal (so the story went), the Thracians believed he must have been an evil, wicked man, and clubbed him to death before grabbing another victim to throw on the spears.

How could someone from such an uncivilized and, lets face it, stupid group of people possibly have brought low six Roman armies? Well, Plutarch explains, you see, this Spartacus guy, he was really more of a “Greek” than a Thracian; he was educated, well spoken, erudite, intelligent, more like one of the good “Hellenized” Thracians than the stupid ones. Years later, Appian and Florus would likewise chime in: not only was Spartacus intelligent, but he had actually been part of the Roman army, trained to fight like a good, civilized Roman soldier, so you see, that’s why this barbarian slave was able to beat us. Early on, we can see the Roman fascination with this Thracian slave, whom they found admirable despite his status as slave, gladiator, and rebel leader.

It is possible that in all of these accounts, a kernel of the real, historical man lies somewhere dormant and unreachable. Spartacus may very well have been all of the above, a “civilized” Thracian, trained in Roman arms, full of a Roman compassion and honor and sense of duty, but such is the fate of legends that over time the man dies and only the story remains, to become what later generations wish it to be. Fundamentally, Spartacus was a slave, a man ripped from his family, his home, and his life, forced to fight at the pleasure of a foreign people, and at a certain point had enough and struck back. Perhaps he sought to unleash a terrible vengeance against those who had wronged him so; perhaps he sought to simply go home. That man has long since passed, yet ultimately Appian was correct; his body will never be found. The story and legend of Spartacus continues to walk among us and speak to us still, not of who the man was, but what he became.
