Shopping at Miniso - SM North EDSA City Center

MINISO, a Japanese fast fashion designer brand founded by Miyake Junya (MINISO chief designer) and Ye Guofu (a young Chinese entrepreneur) was established in 2013. Here they offer creative, quality and low-priced items which are popular among people aged 18 to 35. Since opening its doors in 2013, the brand has expanded globally and has opened more than 1,600 stores one of which is in SM North EDSA City Center.

I haven't tried shopping at MINISO but I keep hearing and reading good things about the brand. Since I was going to the mall to search for a desk lamp, I decided to check their Facebook page. There I saw various items from beauty to creative home necessities, stationery gifts and more. Then I saw some gorgeous rechargeable lamps. Right there and then, I decided to visit them.

I was aware that they just opened a day before and was expecting to see the place jam-packed. When I saw the cashiers were fast. I figured there's nothing to worry about waiting in line too long. And I was right!

In addition, searching for the lamp was also easy. Since MINISO is brightly-lit plus all items are categorized and displayed neatly, finding and checking the items was a piece of cake.

Speaking of which, I was surprised they also offer some snacks and drinks. Since it was nearly lunch, I didn't crave for the snacks but was more interested with the MINISO juice drinks. Yes, they have juice drinks, too! There's mango, peach and apple. You can buy/ try two flavors for only 149 pesos.

Besides the lamp and juice, I was also able to buy other items I needed such as: lemon refreshing soft wipes, socks, a salubrious oil control cleanser, a mini phone bracket, a fashionable wireless mouse and a screen cleaning kit.

I got all these items and I didn't even need to leave the store!

Does that mean Christmas changes too?

No, Christmas is still Christmas. It’s the people who changed especially if that person went through a lot. As mentioned, I faced many challenges this year. I’m sure others experienced this too. In fact, my fellow Filipinos are in agony.

Yes, we won pageants and a boxing match. It did lift up our spirits for a moment. But the effects of natural disasters especially the super typhoon that hit the country is still here. Economic and political problems remained unsolved, not to mention increase in electricity and food prices that affect the way we live.

As I watched the news and my favorite variety show, I saw people who are devastated. When asked how they will celebrate Christmas, some answered that it will be just like any other day. But there are those who said that it doesn't matter if they don’t have the traditional feast. As long as they are with their family, everything will be fine.

It’s the Christmas season after all. This is the only time when we forget our problems and focus on the good things.

In fact, these past days I read many negative thoughts on Facebook. So, I made a simple project. I asked my friends to answer: What I am thankful for this Christmas and the year 2013?

This Christmas I am thankful for the gift of life. For the fast healing of my father while he's abroad dealing chicken pox. Only one more day and its Christmas Day, I hope you’re ready.

I can say that I am ready; however, these past few weeks I had a difficult time facing Christmas. One thing to consider is my health problems. Another is the natural disasters that hit my country, the Philippines.

BUT, there is always something to be thankful for.

Recapturing Christmas
In order to feel the spirit of Christmas, I did a little experiment. I watched the Christmas episodes of my most favorite TV show – Sabrina the Teenage Witch. The episode that hit me the most was from the second season episode 12 entitled Sabrina Claus.

Sabrina wasn’t anti-Christmas; however, she was trying to recapture the feelings she had for Christmas when she was a little girl. She made a long list of gifts she wants to receive which made her selfish and unfocused on the true meaning.

Due to her condition, Sabrina cannot receive any gift because it will only make it worse. So her aunts Zelda and Hilda summoned Bob aka Santa Claus to help Sabrina. Unfortunately, Sabrina accidentally injures Bob and must fill in for him. Sabrina and Salem delivered the gifts to the children around the globe. There, Sabrina learned that Christmas is about giving.

So this is what I did.

Think Straight

Yes, I encountered many problems this year. But did I solve them? Yes, I did. When natural disasters hit the country, what did I do? I prayed. I donated useful things and money. Moreover, we clean our surroundings and plant trees. We help whoever needs it especially if it’s something we can do.

Yes, prices of food, water and electricity increased. But does it mean we should forget Christmas? So I only decorated the house with symbolic Christmas décor – Nativity Scene, Christmas tree and parol (star lantern). The Nativity Scene or crèche symbolizes the birth of Jesus, our savior. The parol symbolizes light that guided people to Jesus. The Christmas tree also symbolizes the light/ guide as well as family.

To get me in the mood a little bit more, I listened to my grandfather’s favorite Christmas album. It’s from Reader’s Digest entitled Christmas through the Years. The classic sound and meaningful lyrics made me understand that Christmas is indeed for everyone. Contrary to what others say, Christmas is not only for kids because it is for everyone.

Lastly, I bought gifts for my colleagues, friends and family especially my little cousins. I’m the kind of person who gives without waiting for something in return. This is me. Why should I stop?

Here I am, a day before Christmas. I am excited and in state of grace because I found Christmas. Forget the negative things because it will always be there. It makes things even. Let’s all be happy and have a very merry Christmas!

2NE1 Unveils Missing You MV

Artistic. Beautiful. Classy. The three perfect words to describe 2NE1’s Missing You.

YG Entertainment revealed the release of the new single “Missing You” a few days ago. It was followed by Double Park urgent press con, each member’s teaser and 2NE1’s 2014 World Tour. Around 18 hours ago, the fierce K-POP quartet finally released their music video.

As 2NE1 members sang from the heart, BOM, DARA and MINZY showed a little skin while CL showed a little bit more. Don’t get me wrong, it was artistic, beautiful and classy. Read the words written on CL’s body, background and the elements seen in the video. Read between the lines and there you will understand what they are implying.

Breaking away from their carefree attitudes, the girls were more mature with their style. It perfectly suites the strong and meaningful lyrics accompanied by the piano and guitar which was emphasized as the song progresses.

Worth the Wait

BlackJacks definitely missed 2NE1. If you have been on their Social Media accounts, you’ll see the huge number of likes and comments on their official and fan-created ones. They (we) were patiently waiting for a new single. Now that they finally have it, BlackJacks aims to hit more than a millions views of their MV within 24 hours and win an award at the coming Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA).

In fact, Missing You MV has reached more than 1M views on YouTube. 2NE1’s latest music video deserves all the attention. Sit back, click play and be mesmerized.

All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day in the Philippines

Many are asking why Filipinos spend the entire day at the cemetery during All Saints’ and All Souls’ Day. Most especially the things they do there.

Filipinos have the longest celebration of almost anything like birthdays, fiestas especially Christmas even Halloween. Since Halloween is celebrated on October 31st, Filipinos start to throw parties and Trick or Treat a week before. This is because November 1st and 2nd are All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day respectively and we, Filipinos commemorate these two special holidays.

Culture and Religion

All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day are significant parts of our culture and religion. Since most people here in our country are Catholics, those days are observed by the majority. In fact, there is an increase in the number of Catholics in the Philippines this 2013. According to The Catholic Directory of the Philippines, there is an addition of six million Catholics or an eight-percent leap from last year. So there are now 76.18 million Catholics out of the estimated population of 96.8 million.

Now, I do not know exactly when it started and how. But I grew up with this custom and tradition. As a devoted Catholic, I believe in it and follow it whole-heartedly. However, each individual even each family have a different way of commemorating All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. But one thing is for sure, Filipinos spend All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day with their kins.

Prayers, Flowers and Candles

Some families go to the cemeteries on October 31st to celebrate Halloween and be there exactly at All Saints’ Day. Some bring a tent and sleeping bags. Yes, they sleep there and stay until the evening of November 1. Our family, on the other hand, rent a tent. We go there at 9AM on November 1 and stay until 6PM.Then we return the next day around 7 or 8AM until 12NN.

Having said that, I will now tell you what we do there.

Upon arriving, we arrange the table, chair and food. Clean the graves then place the flowers and light the candles. Then we pray the rosary and pray for the souls of our departed loved ones. Are you familiar with the “Eternal Rest” or “Requiem”? It is a prayer asking God for the release of the souls of the faithful departed from Purgatory.

Eternal rest, grant unto him/her O Lord

And let perpetual light shine upon him/her.

May s/he rest in peace. Amen.

After that, we share and eat our homemade lunch. We also talk about what’s going on with our lives just like a typical family reunion. Also, I usually give candies to my little cousins on the 1st. They would bring their pumpkin or skull baskets to place the treats. It’s like a post Halloween celebration as well.

You might be thinking, boring! Actually, it’s not. Vendors and fast foods take advantage of these. Memorial parks have authorized vendors to set up stalls on certain parts only. If you did not bring any food, you could buy there. There are even toys being sold there.

When you see people solemnly praying, families laughing and kids playing, it shows you the meaning of love, the essence of family and the impact of culture and religion. Though it can sometimes be sad because you can’t be with you loved ones anymore. This is a great chance to visit their graves and talk to them in prayers.

It’s a chance to share the good things that family member did when s/he was alive. It’s a chance, take it. If ever you visit the Philippines on this season, be sure to stay until night. You’ll see how much color and life the candles bring even in darkness.

Yes, you read that right! OneRepublic, the talented American pop-rock group will hold a concert on November 6^that the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Since their first single, “Apologize,” the band has been constantly on the top of the charts. Their first single sold two million legal downloads. The band made a mark in the music industry when this song became the most popular digital download in the US.

Apart from that, what do they have really?

Honestly, I have been listening to their music since their debut. I can say that they are more than a pop-rock band. I am excited to hear them play live because they have talent, chemistry and together they bring unforgettable and life-changing music. With their Manila concert, I look forward to watch them perform my top five (5) OneRepublic songs live.

5. Apologize

This is the main reason why I love OneRepublic. This song (doesn’t matter which version) caught my attention. It captured both my heart and mind.

4. Feel Again

This song has such good vibes. It simply makes you feel better after a bad day. It’s actually a song you should hear every day.

3. If I Lose Myself

Euphoric is the perfect word to describe the beat, lyrics and the video. Frontman Ryan Tedder explained that, “Even though it sounds like this euphoric, it's a bit morbid; it's about going down in an airplane."

Whenever you’re having fun (losing yourself), you see your life pass before you. But when you look closely and know how you feel, you tell yourself it will be okay. I can’t wait to hear this one live. I just know that I will be in for a surprise.

2. Something I Need

This song was released two weeks ago with a powerful music video. Watching it made my heart pound as I sang along. With the lyrics: Honey, you don't need to be afraid/If we got nothing, we got us, I feel that I am not alone. I have someone.

Moreover, the mind can’t sometimes differentiate reality. Whenever I say or sing this song, I became alive and more positive.

Fulfilling My Travel Goals

I’m turning 25 and there are some things I haven’t done one of which is to travel. Of course, I have traveled to different places. However, it’s always for work or for family. For once, I would like to travel so that I can relax and explore all that place has to offer.

In fact, I have a list of places I want to visit before turning 25 such as Cebu, Davao, Kalibo (Boracay), Puerto Princesa, Tagbilaran, Cagayan De Oro, Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu, Shanghai, Incheon and many more. But since I’m almost at that age, it’s best to visit these places whenever I get the chance.

Good thing, Zest Air is now flying with AirAsia, the World’s 5-time Best Low Cost Airline. Now called “AirAsia Zest”, the company is moving their flights to NAIA Terminal 4. With AirAsia in Manila, they can bring even more Filipino travelers to their favorite destinations at affordable prices.

Travel in the Philippines has never been this easy. I will definitely take advantage of this and start visiting my top three destinations which are:

Cebu

There are two things I would love to experience in the “Queen City of the South”. First is the rich local culture and history. I’m interested in visiting ancestral homes, museums and well-preserved landmarks such as Lapu-Lapu Shrine and Magellan’s Cross Kiosk.

Second, I want to experience the country’s first Sky Walk Extreme on the edge of the Crown Regency Hotel & Towers. It’s quite scary but I’m sure it’s safe and the view up there is superb! If I have the chance to go there, I’ll do this as night so that I can see the city’s beautiful lights.

Of course, I won’t forget to eat Cebu’s version of lechon, the Filipinos all-time favorite food.

Puerto Princesa

There are several pristine beaches in Puerto Princesa or “the city in a forest.” Visitors can take a relaxing dip and enjoy the sun. Aside from that, I am also interested in a cruise to the Puerto Princesa Underground River, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

They say the tour lasts an hour. I think it’s definitely worth it since the caves feature different but wonderful rock formations. I bet I won’t even notice the time. :)

Besides these cities, I also would like to travel outside the country. It’s really great that travel in Asia with AirAsia is also easy. So far, I have only visited Hong Kong twice. But this time, I would like to explore:

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, Southeast Asia’s youngest capital has many sites to offer starting with Aquaria KLCC. This is located at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre and is labeled as the largest aquarium in the world.

Visitors get to see over 150 species of marine life such as blue rays, coral fish, seahorse, sea snakes and tiger sharks. There are also over 5,000 freshwater and marine creatures. This is definitely an attraction worth seeing.

Next is the Batu Caves, located 11 kilometres to the north of Kuala Lumpur. This 100-year old temple is an important religious landmark by Hindus. Moreover, it is also said that the interior limestone formations are 400 million years old. Inside it are idols and statues. To see those, visitors have to climb 272 steps to reach the main entrance.

Two hundred seventy two steps, you say? I can do that! ;)

Last is the Central Market, it’s just a short walk away from Petaling Street, along Jalan Hang Kasturi. The building was built in 1928 and features boutiques, handicraft and souvenir stalls. Authentic Malaysian batik prints can also be bought there.

I just can’t wait to see and explore these places. But with hope, courage and savings, I will definitely get there!

How to Naturally Get Rid of Mosquitoes

According to research, over 3,500 species of mosquitoes has already been described. Most of these mosquitoes infect humans with diseases such as dengue – a mosquito-borne infection that is common in tropical and sub-tropical regions.

The World Health Organization reported that the incidence of dengue around the globe has dramatically increased. Over 44% of the world’s population is now at risk of dengue. However, there is another mosquito-borne infection called chikungunya.

What is chikungunya?

Chikungunya is a dengue-like, viral disease that causes fever, rashes and joint inflammation. Just like dengue, it is also common in tropical and sub-tropical regions such as Burma, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Thailand. The disease mostly occurs during wet or rainy season.

A person with this disease experiences fever with chills and muscular aches, severe headache, rashes and nausea. The initial symptoms last for three to five days. When the rash appears, it lasts for about two to three days. However, the body pain or inflammation of the small joints lasts for weeks to more than a month.

Clearly, these diseases are no laughing matter and should be taken seriously. To prevent experiencing these, we must eliminate the main cause – the mosquitoes. Below are a few tips on how to naturally get rid of mosquitoes.

Empty, drain, or cover – Check all the places in your house. If there are boxes, empty these boxes. There might be things in there that you do not need. Please, throw them away. The bottles, tires and other containers empty and drain them. For sure, there are rain waters that have been contained inside. For trash cans, make sure to arrange whatever you place inside and do not forget to cover them.

Clean and arrange furniture – Check all the corners and dark places of your houses and clean them. If you see that some furniture is positioned in one corner and it creates a dark, re-position them. Just make sure that light and air can pass through it.

Remember to tend your plants – Again check everything. Make sure that after watering the plants, the water goes to the soil. If the water is collected in a pan, throw the water away. Also make sure to cut the grass and do a little garden arranging similar with the furniture.

Buy or plant new plants – Now, we are not talking about just any plant. You will need plants that repel mosquitoes. Geranium, Lavender, Lemongrass and Rosemary have a distinctive smell that mosquitoes hate. You can place them in the garden, near the doors and windows. Just make it a habit to check them.

So those are simple natural ways to prevent mosquitoes. There’s another one I would like to share. I know that some mosquito repellents are harmful. However, this one is Eco-friendly and smoke-free.

Just place this under the table, near curtains, car trunks, shoe cabinets, bathroom, under the bed, storage spaces and other dark places/ corners around your house. I do use mosquito repellent lotion; however, I have asthma and skin allergies. If I do not use it, I use this one and place it near my legs.

Ice Skating at SM Mall of Asia

When I was a child, I prayed for snow to fall. I really wanted to make snow angels, build a snowman and dance on ice.

Of course, snow is impossible in a tropical country. So what my grandfather did was he brought me to Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City. There we watched Disney on Ice and was amazed by how the dancers swiftly danced on ice. After that, I started enjoying watching women perform and compete in Olympic figure skating. They were magnificent.

Moreover, I’m so glad that we have an ice rink in the Philippines. Just ride the MRT to TAFT AVENUE and ride a jeepney straight to SM MALL of ASIA.

Unlimited Ice Skating

It was last March that my friends/ colleagues thought of trying out ice skating. My friend, Jobelle saw this deal online. For only P220, you get to enjoy unlimited Ice Skating. She and Jennifer were able to purchase; however, Jenilee and I wasn’t able. But it was okay. My P390 + P30 (locker fee) was all worth the fun.

If you want to try ice skating, I have a few tips.

Search for online deals – If you are on a budget and if there are many of you, search for online deals. With those vouchers, you get to enjoy unlimited ice skating for a day at the SM Ice Skating Rink. You only have to pay P220 instead of P390 and you get to save as much as 44%.

Wear comfy clothes and socks – Just like bowling (I love bowling), you will be renting not just any shoe. Ice skates are hard and little heavy. You need socks to protect your toes. In addition, I've tried inline skating and skateboarding (not very good) and wearing comfy clothes makes it easier for you to move.

Ask for help – When you are inside the rink, please do not hold hands especially if none of you knows how to skate. Okay? :) My friend and I were holding hands because we needed to leave the rink immediately. It was time for the ice resurfacer to do its job. And since we were the only ones left there, we were on a hurry. So…. My friend fell down. Don’t worry, she’s okay! We just laughed and laughed and covered our faces!

Be brave - The moment I wore the shoes and stepped on the ice, I got scared. I can’t move forward. So we decided to stay on the side, do our best to make adjustments and know our moves. I was so happy when I was able to walk slash skate even a few tiny ones. It’s a great start.

So there you have it! I hope you enjoy your ice skating experience at SM Mall of Asia. Oh! One more thing, erase any panic attacks and enjoy every moment you have on ice.

The Ups and Downs of Life

These past few months, I have been in a roller coaster ride. Reading this quote on Goodreads by Julian Baggini, made me realize that the ups and downs of life is inevitable. There is nothing we can do but to gather our strength and go with the flow.

I, of course, know this already. However, as a person it is sometimes difficult to be strong all the time. People who know me see that I am strong. Very strong. But just like any other person, I also have my shortcomings.

To escape, I turn to my books or listen to music. Sometimes I just open the computer and check my news feed. That’s where I saw a touching GIF story on 9Gag. In fact, it may be considered as the most touching and awesome GIF story ever made.

The Ups and Downs of Life

In just a few seconds, I felt better.

Life will always have its ups and downs. Though it’s difficult, we need to accept it because with acceptance you’ll be able to understand life and enjoy it. And always remember that when you’re down, there is no other way but up. So if you fall down many times, just remember to go up each time that happens.

Things to Do This Rainy Season

In the Philippines, typhoons are common from June to November. The last typhoon we had was last month named TS Maring. As of the moment, there are no reports about a typhoon coming. But the rain would pour every afternoon that would sometimes go on until night making it safer and wiser to stay at home.

To be honest, I love the rainy season because I love the cold weather. However, too much of it can ruin your day. Going out can sometimes be a bad idea because of floods, traffic and getting soaked. So, I thought of ways to kill boredom.

Read a book – If there is a novel you forgot to finish reading, this is the perfect time to continue and know the ending. But if you do not have a spare book (of course, you can’t go out to buy), you can always visit Goodreads.com, choose one title and read. You can also download some ebooks.

Listen to music while drawing – Music inspires art. If you love to draw or would like to try, simply click your music player. Play a song. Click shuffle on and press next. Listen to that random song, understand it and create your art. Don’t forget to press repeat current song.

Watch a movie – Wait. Hear me out. Instead of watching movies on cable or the recent ones, why not try to rent 90s movies or borrow from a friend. I know I said earlier that going out is a bad idea and it’s difficult to find 90s movies being rented. But there’s a CD/DVD rental store near our place. Plus, I’m a 90s kid and I love the movies released on those years.

Under Wraps

This 1997 Disney Channel Original Movie is about three 12-year-old kids who discovered a mummy in the basement of a "dead" man's house and accidentally brought it to life. The kids were scared of him but later discovered he is friendly, clumsy and confused.

The Pagemaster

A cowardly boy enters a library to escape a storm. To teach him a valuable lesson, the Pagemaster transformed the boy into an animated illustration. In order to go back to life, he must work through all the obstacles from classic books.

Matilda

The film is about a wonderful little girl named Matilda. She is a genius and has psychokinetic powers. She has the most wonderful teacher but the worst parents and the worst school principal imaginable.

Carpool

Carpool is a 1996 comedy film. It is about Daniel Miller, a workaholic dad who needs to drive his sons and their friends to school when his wife got sick. Before driving to school, Daniel stooped at the grocery to buy Danish for the kids. But there was a robbery and the situation worsens when Franklin Laszlo, the desperate carnival owner who had been contemplating to rob a bank robs the robbers. He then takes Daniel and the children hostage resulting to a comedic car chase through Seattle.

Susie Q

It was the night of the dance and Susie Q was excited. Her boyfriend picked her up but got into an accident and fell off a bridge. Years later, Zach Sands along with his mother and sister moved in to Susie’s house. Then one night, Zach discovers that he can see Susie's ghost.

"I can't leave! I have a business to run!"

That has got be one of the most common things that many entrepreneurs say whenever they are asked about taking a break or a holiday a few days away from their business. Some may be legitimately concerned because their business is just starting out and extra funding may be hard to come by. But if you really think about it, one of the main reasons that many entrepreneurs decide to start a business in the first place is to escape the constraints of being an employee and become their own boss. And how would you be able to reap the benefits of being your own boss if you can't even afford to give yourself a break once in a while?

So yes, one of the main goals you should have as a business owner is to be able to enjoy the fruits of your labour. And it would be doubtful that you'd be able to do this if you're constantly stressing out over the day-to-day running of your enterprise. Of course, it would be quite irresponsible to just leave your business in its probably expensive Makati office space for rentwithout regard for its future--not to mention, your future finances as well. So what do you do to solve this dilemma? Here are some ideas that might help you out.

Clarify your business goals. When you set up your business, you must have had a set of goals in mind. If you have never really thought about them yet, take some time to think about them now. Whether they are for personal gains or for some higher philosophical, social, or religious purpose; it would be good for you to have end goals to focus your attention on so you will have some direction when making decisions for your business. And to make sure that you always remember them as you try to manage and grow your business; set it on paper and put it up on your wall.

Establish a system that works without you. Now this might be a little difficult, especially if you are the type who has the tendency to micromanage things and people. But with a little determination and a lot of practice, you might be able to pull it off. How? Well, first, you have to figure out the main processes of your daily operations. Next, sort your operations into parts so you'll be able to organise a clear division of labour for your employees. Lastly, hire people you can trust. No matter how well-defined and organised your operations might look on paper, if you don't have people you can trust, you might as well give up on the whole idea of business growth.

Don't be afraid to delegate. For many entrepreneurs, they believe that they're the ones who care the most about the success of their ventures. This is quite understandable, and might even be true on some level. However, since you've hired people to help you out, then let them. It would be quite a waste to have perfectly capable people around and not use their abilities to your advantage. And if you're doubtful that they would get the job done according to your specifications, train them. Employees are also an investment, after all. If you find that they're unwilling to learn or they have bad work ethics, replace them with better ones. Just make sure you have valid reasons for dismissing bad workers.

Lastly, be on the lookout for great talent. Being a good judge of character might take a lot of hard work, time, and a great deal of observation; but it's all worth it in the end because having good people is essential for a business venture to be successful. Just don't forget that intelligence is not the only requisite for a good worker, but also the character and his work ethics.

When you've managed to do all these, then you might not fret so much when thinking about being away from work. Who knows, you might find that your business is doing so much better than you expect when you come back and you just might decide to extend your holiday.

Things to do on Philippine-Japan Friendship Month

For me, July signifies two things. First, it is the start of the second half of the year. Second, it’s Philippine-Japan Friendship Month. Yes, it’s Philippine-Japan Friendship Month which means The Japan Foundation, Manila (JFMO) will be conducting a range of activities featuring the Japanese culture.

Japan World Heritage Sites Exhibit

The photo exhibit showcases several UNESCO-enlisted Japan World Heritage Sites at the Atrium Plaza, Level 2, Shangri-La Plaza Mall, from July 3 until July 11. Visitors will witness Japan’s national and cultural treasures included in the World Heritage Sites list as early as 1993.

According to JFMO, 67 images have been disseminated around the world and 36 can be found at the exhibit. Images included in the exhibited are: Buddhist Monuments in the Horyu-ji Area; Gusuku Sites and related properties of the Ryukyus; Himeji-jo; the Hiroshima Peace Memorial (Genbaku Dome); the historic monuments in ancient Kyoto; the historic monuments of ancient Nara; the Ryoan-ji, a Zen temple located in northwest Kyoto; the historic villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama; Itsukushima Shinto Shrine; sacred sites and pilgrimage routes in the Kii Mountain Range; Shirakami-Sanchi; Shiretoko Peninsula in Hokkaido; the shrines and temples of Nikko; and Yakushima.

Eiga-Sai

The Japanese Film Festival started last Wednesday (July 3). But don’t worry because it will run until August in different establishments. To start with, the festival takes place at the Shangri-La Cineplex Cinema 2 from July 3 to July 14. And as always, screening is free but on a first-come, first-served basis. So be early!

For the 15th Japanese Film Festival (Eiga Sai), Japan Foundation Manila in cooperation with the Japanese Embassy of Manila, Shangri-La Plaza and the Film Development Council of the Philippines offers film enthusiasts 12 award-wining Japanese films. The films were produced between 2005 and 2012 ranging from action, animation, family drama and mystery.

BDJ Rendezvous: Work your Way to the Top!

So, how did you spend the last Saturday of June?

I hope you had a blast because I did. I was at SM North EDSA for the 3rd BDJ Rendezvous of Belle de Jour Power Planner. Honestly, it was my first time to attend a BDJ Rendezvous. I’m glad I took that chance because I learned various lessons from wonderful speakers.

BDJ Rendezvous: Work your Way to the Top speakers includes:

Donna Miranda
Stay on the Beat: It really is difficult to juggle your priorities with your passion. But Donna Miranda proved that it is not impossible. Donna shared how she balanced her life with her love for dance and music.

Sidney Yap

Work in Style: Admit it! Personality is a good factor but we often judge people based on their looks. Sidney Yap showed ways to create fabulous 1st impression through your style.

Sharlynmae Reyes

Stress-Proof your Skin: School can be quite stressful. But nothing beats the level of stress from work. Sometimes it shows on your skin. It is inevitable but Sharlynmae Reyes gave tips on how to properly maintain a healthy and beautiful glowing skin.

Last but not the least is PJ Lanot.

Express and Impress: This is my favorite part. PJ Lanot was very animated in proving his point. The Bellas could not stop laughing. In fact, even mall-goers/ passers-by stopped and listened to his entire segment.

Moving on, PJ helped us discover non-verbal cues that show confidence and credibility at work. We learned that communication is not 100% words but 7 % words, 38% tone and 55% body language. When speaking with others, the words you speak have a universal meaning. But when you deliver it in a different tone and your body reacts to it, the words have a whole new meaning.

He added that we should always adjust and use the “match and lead” style. This is perfect when speaking to a client, boss and during interviews. It will help you do your job well. Lastly, when it comes to difficult situation such as an angry client, remember the word HEAT. This means: Hear, Empathize, Accept and Take charge.

Aside from learning, I got the chance to meet my favorite DJ from Mellow94.7’s The Wake Up Show – the pretty and talented Tracy Abad. She hosted the event and did a great job. There were also games and raffles before and after each segment.

Not only that, each Bella received a loot bag after the event. The loot bags contained various products from different brands. This is mine.

BDJ Rendezvous: Work your Way to the Top was a lot of fun. I really had a great time. I learned some valuable lessons, won Foldable Ballet Flats by Flipsters and brought home a loot bag. I think all the Bellas went home a winner and with smiles on their faces!

Can't Stop Listening to Coque Malla

My grandparents are both music lovers. My grandmother sings and plays the piano while my grandfather loves to listen and sing as well. Since I grew up with them, I grew up listening to music but not just any music.

My grandfather, who has a Spanish blood, listens mostly to Julio Iglesias and other Spanish singers. When I first heard those songs, I loved it. Though I don’t understand most of the words, I loved listening and would hum if I can’t pronounce the words. As I grew older, my taste in music widened.

I started listening to Original Pinoy Music (OPM), J-Pop, Mandopop and K-Pop. There was a time I listened to French music and to medieval and Renaissance music (Gregorian Chant). Then I switched back to Spanish when Thalia’s soap opera hit the Philippines. Then Shakira was introduced and Selena Gomez started singing Spanish versions of her songs.

These songs caught my attention because of the beat and message. But there is this Spanish song entitled Berlin which caught my attention not only because of the notes. The way Coque Malla sings struck my heart (and mind). Though I don’t understand the song, it made me feel and think about home. Plus, he kind of remind me of my dad. :) Hehe My dad sings English, Spanish and Filipino songs and plays the guitar.

I was ale to research a few things about him but I also wanted to understand the lyrics. I didn’t want to use Google translate because it would not make any sense. Then I remembered that I first saw his Youtube video on Maria’s (my former colleague/ friend) Facebook. So, I asked her instead.

He is a singer/songwriter and was lead in a band called los Ronaldos. Plus, she translated the song for me and gave me a bonus track (her favorite song – No Puedo Vivir Sin Ti).

First is my favorite song, Berlin.

When Maria gave me the link and I viewed it, I instantly fell in love with this song. Though it’s actually a guy singing to his love, I can still relate to it. I just can’t stop listening to Coque Malla. Sometimes I wish that I paid attention to my grandfather when he was teaching me Spanish. Well, he grew up in Zamboanga City and the dialect there is similar with Spanish. But most of the time it confuses me especially when my grandmother speaks another dialect.

Oh well! It doesn't matter. Language will never be a barrier to my love for music.

The Best of Spanish Cinema 2013

Are you a film enthusiast and love the Spanish Cinema? Then this film screening is for you. The Embassy of Spain in the Philippines, Instituto Cervantes de Manila and Cultural Center of the Philippines offers Filipino audience The Best of Spanish Cinema.

Indeed, force is the only thing I needed for this year’s Free Comic Book Day and Star Wars Day. Because of that, I was able to visit various bookstores and attend the biggest comic book event in the country which is Free Comic Book Day – Setting the Record.

My friend and fellow blogger, Camille went to National Bookstore in Quezon Avenue early. We were surprised to see that the line was already long. Good thing the organizers were kind to show people the end of the line and guided them all throughout. As a result, the long line was organized and everyone was happy.

Here, There, Everywhere

Before going to the event, I downloaded a map and list of activities provided by the organizers. Besides that, I also made a list in my head on what I’m going to buy. But when I got there, I just could not decide. Of course, I did not forget to grab my THREE FREE COMIC BOOKS!

After that, we started with National Bookstore’s section. I saw discounts here, there and everywhere. My eyes were overwhelmed. Each time I saw a discount sign or my favorite comic book hero; I go near it and grab a copy. But there are also those that I can't afford like the Faber-Castell Manga Pitt Artist Pens. So I just took a photo. *I will buy and use you soon.

Then I saw these.

I visit the bookstore every now and then. However, I only scan and search for comics/ books referred to me by my friends and colleagues or the ones reported by the media. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not getting bored of the stories and I like it when they share their favorite comics/books. It’s just that, all are similar. That is why I love attending Comic Conventions, Book Fairs and Toy Conventions because I get to discover different comics/ books that perfectly suit my taste.

I actually love Marvel, DC Comics and Star Wars. In fact, we have a collection of both comics which is safely hidden in our house. But I do love the Filipino culture, my culture. Thanks to events like this, I get to know, love and appreciate Filipino creations even more. For example, the Filipino graphic novel entitled Trese.

Fantastic Four Comic Book was on sale. The original price was 1,299 pesos.
I bought it for only 100 pesos. :)
Trese costs only 175 pesos. Totally worth it!

It is about foul play, magic spells and supernatural criminals. When crime takes a turn for the weird, the police call Alexandra Trese. I haven’t heard of it but it reminds me of Mystery Incorporated, Martin Mystery and Supernatural. Upon seeing the cover and reading the synopsis, I just could not let go. So, I bought it and will buy the rest after reading this one.

Thanks to Free Comic Book Day – Setting the Record, I found Trese and I got closer to the Filipino culture. I hope next year, the Free Comic Book Day in the Philippines will be bigger and people will continue to support the event!

The Journey of Kina Grannis

As promised, here is another Music entry and the second talented female singer-songwriter I mentioned previously. I would like you to meet Kina Grannis and her sweet, melancholy, hope-filled songs.

Kina started playing the guitar at age 4 and performed in front of her stuffed animals. Yes, she is indeed the shy type. People who know her describe her as the shy and self-proclaimed-awkward songstress. But Kina has come out of her shell and is able to perform for millions of people LIVE and on YouTube.

Before the fame and while making music videos, Kina also entered the Doritos’ Crash the Super Bowl contest and uploaded it on YouTube where her followers begun to grow as well as her votes. A few months later, her video for “Message from Your Heart” was aired during the Super Bowl. This paved way for more viewers, fans, a #1 video on Digg.com, a street team and a record deal.

Determined to record and release the songs she had been writing, Kina forfeited her record label. In early 2010, she self-funded and independently released “Stairwells” wherein it debuted on Billboard’s Top 200 and #5 on iTunes Pop Chart. In addition, The New York Times and WNYC Soundcheck recognized Kina as one of the top Asian-Americans making an impact in the pop music world.

Later, she released a music video for the song “Valentine” and spent most of the year 2010 touring across North America. She performed in sold out shows at Los Angeles’ Troubadour and El Rey Theater and New York City’s Highline Ballroom. Not only that, she was also able to play alongside Sarah McLachlan, Metric, Mary J Blige and Ingrid Michaelson. In 2011, remixed and re-mastered version of Stairwells was released in stores and internationally. The album includes fan-favorites such as “Valentine” and “Message from Your Heart”.

Songs from the Heart

I have watched most of her YouTube videos from covers to her singles. I must say that my top picks are: It's Love, In Your Arms, Valentine and The Way You Are (Duet with David Choi). The common denominator is obviously – LOVE. This word is the most used theme for a song. But what makes Kina’s music worth hearing is her sweet voice, honest and hope-filled lyrics.

Let’s admit it; there are only a few songs that touch the heart these days. And there are only a few that’s hard to forget. I would like to share a few lines from my favorite Kina Grannis songs and let me know what you think.

Loving Strangers and Russian Red

I have prepared two special Music entries which involves two talented female indie singers and songwriters. I also promise to post both entries before April ends.

People say, once I put on my headphones, my life becomes a music video. This is true especially if the song speaks to you which remind me of the line, “When you’re happy, you enjoy the music. But when you are sad you understand the lyrics.” This is the reason why I can’t stop listening to Russian Red.

Lourdes Hernández is Russian Red, a Spanish indie folk-pop-rock singer. She is also a songwriter and composes most of her songs in English. Despite singing only that language, she became an indie phenomenon in Spain in 2008 and 2009. Not only that, she was also named as Spain’s biggest artists.

Because of her voice, performing style and poetic approach, Hernández quickly moved from singing in small clubs in Madrid to theatres and clubs around the world some of which include Argentina, Belgium, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Venezuela and the USA. Her first album “I love your glasses” released by Eureka sold more than 40,000 copies and achieved a Gold sales status.

This paved way for her performances in 200 concerts in Europe. She also received awards for "Best Album Debut 2008" and "Best Female Voice 2009" as well as three nominations to the National Music Awards. But it does not end there; her songs also became part of great campaigns, TV series and films.

Room in Rome

Habitación en Roma or Room in Rome is where I first heard Lourdes Hernández a.k.a Russian Red. Loving Strangers is the theme song of the film which made her win a nomination for the Goya awards as Best Song.

If you haven’t heard of it, just click the video. I promise it is not a waste of time. I've been listening to it since I first heard it when I watched Room in Rome. Actually, I was not going to proceed in watching the film because Habitación en Roma is a 2010 Spanish erotic romance film. I have nothing against the theme. To be honest, I did not read the synopsis.

However, the moment I heard the voice of Lourdes Hernández, I just could not leave. I stayed there and watched as the film progresses. That is when I learned Room in Rome is about a relationship between two young women who are complete strangers in a hotel room in Rome.

The way the film was made, the actors, the shots, the story especially the music, Loving Strangers are a perfect match. I was not left hanging. In fact, I was enlightened and touched. If you haven’t heard the song or watched the film, please do so. It is a work of art.

Youth's New Journey On Cyberspace

I wrote this article in 2011. Though it may seem like an old news, it is the type where people take it for granted but we can definitely learn something good.

Today's youth is a technology-savvy. An average techie-person would turn on the tv/radio for the news. But, a real tech-savvy person would have his computer turned on, surf on media websites and read news online. There one can post countless comments and reactions on different issues. Indeed, it's a wonderful way of sharing your thoughts to people around the globe.

But with an infinite number of media websites, social networking sites, and file sharing sites for music, movies, and games, the cyberspace is considered a helpful yet appalling world.

Morality Check

Many especially parents are deeply troubled when they see their children glued on the computer or wasting money for online games instead of studying. This may sound cliché, but people often neglect this reality.

It's a good thing that most computer shops in the Philippines forbid students to play during class hours. But since people of all ages can access the internet, there is no possible solution to stop anyone from accessing or playing games that are not suitable for the youth.

For instance, games on violence can be “too violent” for the youth. Not only do they forget that it is just a game, they also tend to forget the true essence of their existence and what they should be doing as a student.

With all these bad effects on the youth, the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines and the CBCP's Episcopal Commission on Catechesis and Catholic Education (ECCCE) launched last year a 3D video game for the youth.

The CBCP thought of a way to put technology into a good use. This video game is intended to teach the youth specifically from third grade to college about Catechism. Not only do the students enjoy the game, they can also learn a lot from it.

Paolo's Journey

The new 3D video game with catechetical value is called “Paolo's Journey”. The game was developed by Fr. Maximo Villanueva, Jr. of the Balanga diocese who studied computer animation at the New York Film Academy in New York City.

The game is based on Pope Benedict XVI’s “Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.” The journey starts when Paolo, a 10- year-old boy falls into a deep well while searching for his kitten.

Inside this well, he meets an angel who tells him to collect three keys which he will need to be able to return home. As he obtains a key, he advances to the next level.

While searching for keys, Paolo needs to slay creatures called “Bloobas” and collect scrolls. Not only that, he also needs to answer 45 catechism questions.

In the first level, the questions are related to the Sacraments. In the second level, the player would be asked about the 10 Commandments; and in the third or difficult level, the player would be tested on Christian values.

The game can be played in five different languages: English, Filipino, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian.

What Made My 2012 Extra Special?

My 2012 started right. However, it was full of challenges. I admit that I almost gave up because it was too much for my fragile heart. I am glad that I always talk to God and He was always there to give me hope and strength.

By the middle of 2012, God slowly answered my prayers. One by one, my world became clearer and my prayers were answered. This only shows that in God’s time, everything will fall into place. I am happy that I waited and I called for His guidance.

But what made my 2012 extra special? That would be my barbaric friends also known as the Barbarianz. I think it’s about time to share something about D’ Barbarianz.

Barbaric Story

It was way back in college (No, I’m not that old.), when we had our own circle of friends. Cha and I were part of tropapipz wherein there were nine of us. Jackie and Elaine, on the other hand, belonged to another group but all four of us where on the same class.

Bevs was in another class while Suz was also in another class. Last is Mita. She has a different schedule and do not belong in a specific class which was called the irregulars or irreg.

College years and Graduation Day!

All seven of us knew each other and became classmates during our second year in college. We were not close as a group but we talked to each other and went home together. It was only on the third year that we became really close. Since then, the bond among us never broke.

We named our group Barbarianz because we love food especially if it’s free. We love to go shuai hunting because we feel like it. We love to sing, dance and make music videos because we are crazy. Most importantly, we are all strong and we never back down on any challenges. We fight especially when we know we are right. We are a barbarian with class.

Together Again

Though we do not see each other every day anymore, our bond is still strong thanks to the wonders of technology. Even if there are times when we go out and we are not complete, our friendship is still there. My 2012 became extra special because we were able to see each other before 2012 ended.

As always, we had another misadventure. But this time I cannot share it since it’s too personal. It all goes into, The Barbarianz Dictionary/ Burn Book. But the misadventures that day kept us alive and made us feel younger. I am so happy I met my Barbarianz.

With the start of the New Year, the Barbarianz promised that we will schedule more get togethers starting this 2013. We will not let distances especially work get in our way. Most importantly, we will all schedule a leave of absence when one of us gets married (in the near future) because that’s what friends do.

Thank you to the past years especially to 2012. Hello and welcome 2013. Let’s make this year happier.

End of the World, NOT!

It’s the end of the world, NOT! Here we go again. People keep on insisting that the world will soon end. They keep on giving dates and explanations on what will happen. They also keep on telling other people to confess.

Seriously, why do we have to wait for this? Can’t we just believe in God and follow his teachings? Do good things and enjoy life?

During the “end of the world”, I spent my first day of Christmas vacation cleaning my home office. Afterwards, I went out with mi abuela and tio to shop and eat out. If the world did end that day, I’m happy that I was with my family. But I’m glad it did not happen. (•‿•)

Doggie Life

On our way to the mall, we came across a dead dog lying on the ground. Judging from my view, the dog was crossing the road as a fast vehicle was approaching. Dogs know how to cross the road. They can avoid cars unlike other animals crossing the road. Plus, they are visible enough.

But that (new) part of Quezon City is a place where huge trucks love to pass by. I was in a tricycle one time and trucks passing by never give small vehicles a space. Honestly, I hate that part of QC especially when I saw the poor dog. The dog was lying lifeless on the ground. I know that dogs don’t live as long as we do. But that’s the first time I saw a dog being run over. Usually, I see rats and frogs.

Then I remembered December 21^st is the day that my dog, Tuckie died. Besides that, it’s also the end of the world. Though I know it’s not possible, I was sure it was the end of his doggie life. Sad, but I am sure he is now in heaven along with my dog, Tuckie and all the other dogs in the world. I guess he will be so much happier up there than here.

New Life

After the “end of the world”, a child was born. Along with this new life is a new year for all of us. I hope we all get to use this wisely. Though God is good all time. We should not take advantage of HIM. Let us all be good as well.

Misa de Gallo and Christmas Carols

Do you hear what I hear? Ringing through the sky, shepherd boy.

Ah! Christmas is definitely here. Decorations, lights and carols fill up our homes, the streets and the world. Along with this is the start of Simbang Gabi, a tradition practiced by Catholics all over the world.

Simbang Gabi or Misa de Gallo in Spanish is a devotional nine-day series mass. It usually happens at 4 or 5 in the morning and starts on the 16 of December and ends on the 24^th. According to the elders, if a person completes the nine masses his or her wish will come true.

So far, I haven’t completed it since I have a hard time getting up that early. I mean I can wake up early but not that early. The last time I tried waking up at 4am for three consecutive days led to the attack of vertigo and asthma. (╥﹏╥)

Moreover, the beginning of Simbang Gabi also marks the start of Christmas Caroling. Kids who are now enjoying their Christmas break are busy preparing their songs. I remember when I was five years old and very sickly; I was not allowed to go out of our house. But when I heard kids practicing carols near our home, I went out and joined them. I did not know what we were going to do but I just followed them and welcomed me.

In a child’s eyes

The world is hug in a child’s eyes. When I was with them, the village where we lived seemed huge to me. Though we were little and we had no adult companion, we managed to sing in every home with their Christmas lights on.

The neighbors were very generous. In just one night, we were able to collect 500 pesos. After caroling, we divided it among ourselves. It was quite an experience for a little girl. I was happy back then. Simple things, simple joy absolutely nothing to worry about.

Those were during the 90s. If I compare it to what I see today, I would rather go back in time. Before a huge number of people with their families participate in the Simbang Gabi, many filled their homes with colorful lights and everyone sang carols. Now, you are able to count how many attended the mass, how many decorated their homes and not everyone sing or listen to carols unless you’re at the mall or theatres.

Most of the time, people would just take photos and videos without even remembering, understanding and celebrating Christmas the right way. It’s not all about the gifts and parties, it’s all about your love and faith with your creator. It revolves around God and your family.

I’m not in the position to tell you how to celebrate Christmas. It just that for a 90s kid, there were a lot to look forward before. But things have changed. I just hope the true essence of Christmas will never be forgotten.

December Promises

Happy weekend and happy December to you, my dearest reader! How will you be spending the first day of December? Perhaps Christmas shopping or a weekend getaway with family or friends?

Me? Well, I have to fix again my Skype call for my evaluation next week. But I also have something else to do. Today, December 1^st is my grandparents’ anniversary. But since mi abuelo already passed away. Mi abuela, tio and I will be visiting abuelo’s grave and eat lunch somewhere nice.

Besides that, I am looking forward to watch Rurouni Kenshin: Samurai X (Live Action) next week. The very loooong wait is finally over. Promise! It will be shown on December 5^th at SM Cinemas nationwide.
