Chronograph:
Any watch with stopwatch functions can be called a chronograph. This has nothing to do with any measurement of accuracy, it is merely a statement that the watch has this function.

In watch industry terms, the elapsed time measurement functions of a chronograph are some of the many 'complications' beyond the basic timekeeping functions of a watch mechanism. Even watches with quartz movements may implement these complications through mechanical gears, wheels, and dials. Other watch complications include date indicators, alarms, moon phase displays, multiple time zone features, and other time-related measurements shown with additional hands, windows, or sub-dials on the watch.

Chronometer:
The first need for very accurate timepieces came from ships needing precision timekeeping to allow precise celestial navigation. The term chronometer came in to use to describe timepieces accurate enough for ship navigation. In 1973, the Controle Officiel Suisse des Chronometeres (COSC) came in to existence as the official testing and certification control board.

Now, only a watch whose movement has been certified by COSC can be called a chronometer. For a typical men's-sized mechanical watch movement, it must have stayed within -4 to +6 seconds of variation per day during the COSC measurement at various temperatures and positions.

COSC also certifies quartz movements (their standard is +/-0.2 second per day for these). But since quartz movements are inherently very accurate and suffer little to no variation based on position or normal temperature ranges, certification is much less significant to buyers of quartz movement watches. Almost no watchmakers go to the expense to have COSC certify their quartz movements.

A chronometer certificate is not a guarantee of future accuracy. Watch movements that have been certified can get out of adjustment and perform poorly. Movements that were not certified may still exceed the COSC standards--the manufacturer may simply have simply chosen to bypass the expense of the certification process.

OMEGA keeps excellent records on all the watches they have made. As of March 2004, OMEGA has added an outstanding feature on their official website.

Their new OMEGA Vintage Information Database allows you to, after a brief registration, look up a lot of details on vintage models. While the initial release of the database is still being filled in with details, the listings are not totally comprehensive. But this is a tremendous leap in customer service which OMEGA deserves high commendation for!

The most readily available piece of inforamtion to identify your watch is its serial number. On most current and recent OMEGA watches, the serial number is on the outside of the watch. Often it is on either the back of the watch or on the back of the lug (the protrusions used to attach a strap or bracelet) closest to the 7 o'clock position.

Also, recent models include the serial number on a sticker on the outside of the white pasteboard 'presentation box.' But be sure to double check it--occasionally the white outer box lids get accidentally swapped at the store before you buy the watch.

On older OMEGA watches, you may need a jeweler to open the watch to read the serial number off of either the movement or the inside of the back of the case. Either way, make sure the number you record is 8-digits long, otherwise you may have recorded something besides the serial number.

Any numbers or identification marks on the bracelet of the watch are not part of the model or serial number of the watch. Such markings on the bracelet only identify the bracelet.

Watch serial numbers must be on more permanent parts of the watch--such as the case, the case back. or the movement inside the watch.

OMEGA does not stamp model numbers on their watches. Model numbers are subject to change, can be different in different countries, and vary based on dealer swappable parts such as bracelets and straps. So a model number is not a permanent identifier of a watch. But any serial number can be looked up to see what model number the completed watch left the factory as.

Once you have the serial number, go to the official OMEGA website at www.omegawatches.com and select their CUSTOMER SERVICE section. From there select the "VALUE A WATCH" feature and follow the instructions.

Rolex Submariner:
The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner is a line of watches manufactured by Rolex, designed for diving and known for their resistance to water.

The first Submariner was introduced to the public in 1954 at the Swiss Watch Fair. Copied by other watch makers, the Rolex Submariner is widely recognized as a classic among wristwatches manufactured by one of the most widely recognized luxury brands in the world. The Rolex Submariner is part of Rolex's Oyster Perpetual line.

Submariner in action:
The watch has been part of expeditions both at sea (such as the Moana expedition) and overland in the Antarctic (where it withstood temperatures of minus 45 degrees Celsius). In the Moana sea expedition it withstood in excess of a thousand dives. Thor Heyerdal, the Norwegian anthropologist, wore a Rolex Submariner in his 1970 Ra II sea expedition.

The French diving company COMEX adopted the submarinerComex submariners as standard issue for their saturation divers, beginning late -60 up until the company was sold in 1997.

The Royal navy used a special edition of the submariner, ref nr 5513, for frogman use.

Later models:
Throughout the next 40 years, the Submariner was updated with improved water resistance, new movements, and numerous small cosmetic changes. Nonetheless, the modern Submariner of today bears a very strong resemblance to the 5512 or 5513 of the early 1960s, and is an unmistakable descendant of the very first Submariners introduced more than fifty years ago. In 2003, Rolex celebrated the Submariner's 50th anniversary by launching the Rolex Submariner anniversary edition (16610 LV). Its distinguishing features were the green bezel and Maxi dial. Production ended in 2010.

In 2008 a new case (from the GMT II) was introduced, featuring heavier lugs and crownguard. At the same time, a cerachrome bezel and an updated clasp featuring a quick adjust function was added.

The lineup was updated in steps, starting with the white gold model in 2008, yellow gold models in 2009 and finally the steel model in green and black livery in 2010.

I love this watch. I've worn it every day for around 2 years now. It took a little while to get used to the size, but I can't wear smaller watches now. At first you'll notice its weight, but after a few days you'll feel naked without it.

The wristband is a little bit more rigid than my Rolex Datejust, and the only drawback to it is that the clasp will sometimes open depending on your wrist position. Another very small quibble that I have is that the face smudges pretty easily.

As with every automatic watch, the time needs to be adjusted every once in a while. It seems that it's around 2-3 minutes slow every month. This is actually much, much better than the 5-6 minutes that my Rolex was fast every month.

Best thing is that this watch looks as casual as you would want it to be wearing t-shirts and flip flops, and also fits right in when you're wearing a tux. Lots of compliments from everyone who knows their watches too.
