This is a bronze version of President Barack Obama's Jorg-Gray. I have the original which I love but the glass is getting a tiny bit cloudy underneath. I plan to replace it with sapphire crystal one day. I do like this bronze look. It's a bit steampunk in style actually. When the demonstration sample was exhibited at Baselworld 2010, it attracted huge interest from watch enthusiasts, journalists and industry experts alike. With its innovative and very detailed graphics, its clear, high-resolution screen of 300 dpi**, and its wide viewing angle, the new EPD watch demonstrated the future of digital time in a way that impressed the entire industry and opened visitors' eyes to the extraordinary potential of quartz timekeeping allied to innovative displays.

In addition to having an entirely new display system, the second generation EPD watch receives a time signal from the world's atomic clocks via radio wave so that the usual 15-seconds-amonth accuracy of the watch is enhanced whenever the watch is in range of the transmitters. The time signal it receives is from atomic clocks that are accurate to 10-13 seconds a day or one second in every 30 million years!

It is powered by a self-recharging solar battery, so that no battery replacement is ever required. Once fully charged, thanks to SEIKO's expertise in energy-efficient IC and other hi-tech electronics, the new EPD watch can run for up to nine months even without additional exposure to light. Furthermore, if no button is pressed while the watch remains in darkness for 72 hours, the ‘sleep’ mode is activated. In this mode, the watch remembers the time and continues to receive the radio signal for over three years. As soon as any button is pressed or the solar cells are exposed to light, it awakes and the display operates normally once again.

Thanks to its 300 dpi screen resolution and four-shade grey scale, the new EPD watch offers five different styles of time display, all of which are custom-designed by SEIKO and each of which reflects a different and innovative face of digital time.

In the world time mode, the newly designed screen shows time, calendar, the name of a designated city (you can choose from 32 cities!) and the time difference from UTC*** as well as a second local time, its geographical location shown on the globe. Technology of EPD

EPD stands for Electrophoretic Display, a method of display with electronic ink technology. Electronic ink is a proprietary material that is processed into a film for integration into electronic displays. Although revolutionary in concept, electronic ink is a straightforward fusion of chemistry, physics and electronics to create this new material. The principal components of electronic ink are millions of tiny microcapsules, about the diameter of a human hair. Each microcapsule contains negatively charged white particles and positively charged black particles suspended in a clear fluid. When a negative electric field is applied, the white particles move to the top of the microcapsule where they become visible to the user. This makes the surface appear white at that spot. At the same time, an opposite electric field pulls the black particles to the bottom of the microcapsules where they are hidden. By reversing this process, the black particles appear at the top of the capsule, which now makes the surface appear dark at that spot."

This is actually a cross post from SparkleTrain. I originally put the post up there before I started WATCHMATRIX. I've been meaning to put it up here. The watch has been holding up, but I noticed a little bit of "fog" under the glass if you angle it just right. I'm not sure if it was always there or came about after leaving it on the counter during a shower. Regardless, it's a nice watch and if it's good enough for Obama, it's good enough for me.

The model is called 'Upside down' because only the correct hour is the right side up. When the minute hand reaches 12 o'clock, the old hour number instantly turns upside down and the new hour turns right-side-up.

Delivery consisted of 12 limited edition timepieces and as an added novelty the hour equal to the number of the watch, is highlighted. For example, if the piece is number 3 of 12, it will have the 3 in a different color.

The U-42 is 3 mm thicker and the bezel is thicker, making it feel larger. Grade 5 natural titanium is used for the manufacturing of the case, which in my opinion is needed. Titanium is light and tough, great for the knocks a big watch will take. On the left of the U-42 is the very specialized crown system. The reason for a large, protruding crown is ease of use in all conditions. Even with thick gloves, one can grip it. To release the crown, a trigger is placed at seven o'clock. Once unfolded, the crown protrudes considerably, and can be pulled out like any other crown with positions for winding and setting.

Because it is inspired by a design from 1942, it is natural that the U-42 offers a vintage-like look. The dial plays an important role in achieving this style. The hour markers are bold and display a beige hue that recalls the spent, and discolored white luminescent paint on old watches. The beige paint on the U-42 is phosphorescent and is also applied to the hands. These thick, baton hands are made of sterling silver. The strap is cut and stitched by hand using thick, brown leather and beige thread. The grain of the leather is left untouched on the underside of the band and is only marked by the U-Boat logo that is burnt into it.

The U-42 is an automatic-winding watch runs on Swiss mechanics. The movement is a U-28 calibre. It is the first movement to be given a U-Boat calibre denomination. It offers a 40 hour power reserve. 999 or less of each variation of the U-42 will be manufactured. The U-42 fits in a more accessible price range than its big brother, the U-1942, of which only 28 were manufactured and offered at US $40K. This watch is destined for the wrists of watch enthusiasts with a liking for size. The 53mm, titanium case is rigorously engineered and true to military design principles of the forties. Originally the design offered unparalleled visibility in dark waters, and now a remarkable and unique look. Retail $7,000.
