The character first appeared in Hulk vol. 2, #1 (Jan. 2008) and was created by writer Jeph Loeb and artist Ed McGuiness.
The character was introduced in 00 in Hulk , and has ties to the original Marvel character the Hulk, as the Red Hulk is created as part of a Super Soldier program by long-time members of the Hulk's supporting cast: General Thunderbolt Ross and psychiatrist Doc Samson. The A.I.M. creation MODOK, an old Hulk foe is also involved, as is a criminal think tank called "The Intelligencia". The character is described as "absolutely uninhibited, tactically intelligent"6 and "Everything the Green Hulk isn't, the Red Hulk is." Although possessing virtually all the abilities of the original green Hulk, the Red Hulk does not grow stronger with anger - instead emitting increasing levels of heat.

According to the newspaper USA Today, the Red Hulk was created to boost sales and create buzz in the lead up to the 00 film The Incredible Hulk. Loeb and McGuinness were initially working on a Hulk miniseries (as according to Loeb, "McGuinness came over from DC for one reason, and that's he wanted to draw the Hulk.") that would establish the Hulk as the strongest Marvel character. It was then that Joe Quesada proposed the idea for a red version of the Hulk with a secret identity. The identity of the Red Hulk is a mystery, both to the characters in the story and to the reading audience.0

Once the series was promoted, Marvel's insert booklets in Diamond Previews began referring to the Red Hulk character as "Rulk" to distinguish from the original Hulk character. Writer Loeb began using the term as of issue seven.

The title Hulk establishes that the character is very aggressive, as the Red Hulk murders Hulk foes the Wendigo and Abomination; destroys the Helicarrier of spy organization S.H.I.E.L.D.; defeats several Marvel heroes, and, after causing an earthquake in San Francisco, is finally defeated by the combined efforts of the Hulk and the thunder god Thor.

A 00 one-shot publication titled King-Size Hulk featured the Red Hulk, and was written by Loeb, with artwork by Frank Cho, Art Adams, and Herb Trimpe.

Issues seven through nine of the title were "split books", featuring two stories by Loeb, with Adams providing artwork for the first and Cho the second. The Red Hulk battles the female superhero team the Lady Liberators and, after tricking them, kidnaps member Thundra, and offers her an alliance. The Elder of the Universe the Collector teams the character with other villains (a team called the Offenders - an evil version of superhero team the Defenders) in a bid to prevent the original Hulk from reuniting with past love Jarella.

In the "Code Red" story arc, mutant assassin Domino investigates Rulk, observing him transforming from his human self. In response, Rulk pursues Domino with the help of Deadpool, Punisher, Elektra, and Crimson Dynamo XII, but comes into conflict with X-Force, a Red She-Hulk and Doc Samson.

In Fall of the Hulks: Alpha, it is revealed that MODOK was a part of a loose-knit cabal of scientists that included the The Leader, Doctor Doom, Mad Thinker, Wizard, Egghead, and the Red Ghost, which gathered the knowledge that MODOK eventually used to create the Red Hulk.6 In Fall of the Hulks: Gamma, Red Hulk fights and kills General Ross, apparently at the behest of Bruce Banner, with whom he has formed an alliance.
The group debuted in The Fantastic Four #1 (November 1961), which helped to usher in a new level of verisimilitude in the medium. The Fantastic Four was the first superhero team created by writer-editor Stan Lee and artist and co-plotter Jack Kirby, who developed a collaborative approach to creating comics with this title that they would use from then on. As the first superhero team title produced by Marvel Comics, it formed a cornerstone of the company's 1960s rise from a small division of a publishing company to a pop-culture conglomerate. The title would go on to showcase the talents of comics creators such as Roy Thomas, John Byrne, Steve Englehart, Walt Simonson, John Buscema, George Perez and Tom DeFalco, and is one of several Marvel titles still in publication since the Silver Age of Comic Books.

The four core individuals traditionally associated with the Fantastic Four, who gained superpowers after exposure to cosmic rays during a scientific mission to outer space, are: Mr. Fantastic (Reed Richards), a scientific genius and the leader of the group, who can stretch his body into incredible lengths and shapes; the Invisible Woman (Susan "Sue" Storm), Reed's wife, who can render herself and others invisible and project powerful force fields; the Human Torch (Johnny Storm), Sue's younger brother, who can generate flames, surround himself with them and fly; and the monstrous Thing (Ben Grimm), their grumpy but benevolent friend, who possesses superhuman strength and endurance due to the nature of his stone-like flesh.

Since the original four's 1961 introduction, the Fantastic Four have been portrayed as a somewhat dysfunctional yet loving family. Breaking convention with other comic-book archetypes of the time, they would squabble and hold grudges both deep and petty, and eschew anonymity or secret identities in favor of celebrity status. The team is also well known for its recurring struggles with characters such as the villainous monarch Doctor Doom, the planet-devouring Galactus, the sea-dwelling prince Namor, the spacefaring Silver Surfer, and the shape-changing alien Skrulls.

The Fantastic Four have been adapted into other media, including four animated television series, an aborted 1990s low-budget film, the major motion picture Fantastic Four (2005), and its sequel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007).

Ever since Bob Hall started working on Batman, his stories received mixed reaction. One need only look so far as his previous effort, Batman: DOA, to determine his merits as a Bat-storyteller.

Characterization is one place where he excels. To him, Batman is a character with likes and dislikes, someone who's not afraid to say what's he's thinking. The interplay between Bruce and Alfred isn't something we get every month in the core Bat-books.

Hall's Joker is magnificent! Since this three-part mini is devoted to the Joker, Hall has more time (so to speak) to examine the Joker's inner workings. In No Man's Land last year, Greg Rucka presented the kind of Joker I'd never completely seen before, but always hoped for.

Bob Hall's freedom allows him to take that Joker one step further, making him an endlessly raving maniac, with jokes that are both hit and miss; it's that diversity here that makes his Joker believable.

There are times when his art resembles something from Graham Nolan, but most of the pages look like pencils comparable to those of Jim Aparo. In both theoretical cases, they'd appear to have been inked by Bill
Sienkiewicz, but there's some gritty texture to Bob Hall's art that combines all three artists into a funhouse of follies.

Just click to download!
It was written by Jeph Loeb, and penciled by Jim Lee, inked by Scott Williams and colored by Alex Sinclair. The story depicts a mysterious stalker, head wrapped in bandages, called Hush, who seems intent on sabotaging Batman from afar, and utilizes a large number of guest appearances by Batman villains. It also emphasizes the romantic feelings between Batman and Catwoman.

Although he has scripted countless adventures of Batman, his work really shines when he explores the more human characters of Gotham.

Batman: Gordon of Gotham is a very nicely executed cop story, following a young patrolman named James Gordon (later Commissioner Gordon) as he tries to do his best in a police department racked by corruption. It began when his partner, Sgt. Davidson tried to bust the head of a local hippie. Gordon stopped him, then made the mistake of “making waves” by reporting the abusive conduct.

Right then, Gordon knew Davidson was a bad cop, but he didn’t know how bad. Davidson—and many others in the department—were on the take. And when Gordon began to uncover their scheme, the bad cops decided to set Gordon up—for murder!

Uderzo has continued the series since the death of Goscinny in 1977. The series follows the exploits of a village of ancient Gauls as they resist Roman occupation. They do so by means of a magic potion, brewed by their druid, which gives the recipient superhuman strength. This is often used for comic effect, as in a recurring sequence where the villagers sally forth from their village to rout the attacking Romans so easily as to consider it great sport. In many cases, this resistance leads the main characters to travel to various European countries (but also Egypt, America, India and other non-European locations) in every other book, while the remaining are set in and around their village.

Watchmen is a twelve-issue comic book limited series created by writer Alan Moore, artist Dave Gibbons, and colorist John Higgins. The series was published by DC Comics during 1986 and 1987, and has been subsequently reprinted into a collected graphic novel. Watchmen originated from a story proposal Moore submitted to DC featuring superhero characters that the company had acquired from Charlton Comics. As Moore's proposed story would have left many of the characters unusable for future stories, managing editor Dick Giordano convinced the writer to create original characters instead.

Moore used the story as a means to reflect contemporary anxieties and to critique the superhero concept. Watchmen takes place on an alternate history Earth where superheroes emerged in the 1940s and 1960s, helping the United States to win the Vietnam War. The country is edging closer to a nuclear war with the Soviet Union, freelance costumed vigilantes have been outlawed and most costumed superheroes are in retirement or working for the government. The story focuses on the personal development and struggles of the protagonists as an investigation into the murder of a government sponsored superhero pulls them out of retirement.

Creatively, the focus of Watchmen is on its structure. Gibbons used a nine-panel grid layout throughout the series and added recurring symbols such as a blood-stained smiley. All but the last issue feature supplemental fictional documents that add to the series' backstory, and the narrative is intertwined with that of another story, a fictional pirate comic titled Tales of the Black Freighter, which one of the characters reads. The graphic novel skips through space, time and plot, classifiying itself as a true nonlinear narrative. Watchmen has received critical acclaim both in the comics and mainstream press, and is regarded by critics as a seminal text of the graphic novel medium. After a number of attempts to adapt the series into a feature film, director Zack Snyder's Watchmen was released in March 2009.

Final Crisis

Final Crisis is a seven-issue comic book limited series published by DC Comics in 2008 and written by Grant Morrison. Originally DC announced the project as being illustrated solely by J. G. Jones; artists Carlos Pacheco, Marco Rudy and Doug Mahnke later provided art for the series. It directly follows DC Universe after the conclusion of the 51-issue Countdown to Final Crisis weekly limited series.Promotion about the limited series describes its story as "the day evil won". The series deals with alien villain Darkseid's plot to overthrow reality, and the subsequent death and corruption of various DC characters and their universe.
As a licensed property by Hasbro, comics were released from 1967 up to this day, with only two interruptions longer than a year (1977-1981, 1997-2000). As a team fighting Cobra since 1982, the comic book history of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero has seen three separate publishers and four main-title series, all of which have been based on the Hasbro toy line of the same name. The first series was produced by Marvel Comics between 1982 and 1994, running for 155 issues and spawning several spin-off titles throughout the course of its run; the second and third series, published by Devil's Due Productions from 2001 to 2008, totaled 80 issues and included several spin-off titles as well. The fourth series is being published by IDW Publishing since October 2008, and various spin-off titles were launched as well. Another series, based on the G.I. Joe Extreme line of toys, was a short-lived run published by Dark Horse Comics in 1995-1996.

Batgirl is the name of several fictional characters appearing in comic books published by DC Comics, frequently depicted as female counterparts to the superhero Batman. Originally created by Bob Kane and Sheldon Moldoff, the first incarnation of the character, the "Bat-Girl" Betty Kane, debuted in Batman #139 (1961) as the sidekick to Batwoman. Following the promotion of Julius Schwartz to editor of the Batman-related comic book titles in 1964, the Bat-Girl character was removed from publication (along with Batwoman) and replaced by the "new" Batgirl Barbara Gordon, police commissioner James Gordon's daughter, in 1967. The new character was introduced in Gardner Fox and Carmine Infantino's Detective Comics #359, entitled "The Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl".
The Barbara Gordon version of Batgirl made regular appearances in DC comics from 1967 to 1988. The official retirement of Batgirl took place in Batgirl Special #1 (June 1988), which was published a few months after Barbara Gordon's shooting by The Joker in the graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke (March 1988). Editor Kim Yale and comic book author John Ostrander later reinvented Barbara Gordon as Oracle, the premier information broker of the DC Comics Universe and leader of the Birds of Prey organization.
In the 1999 story Batman: No Man's Land, Helena Bertinelli briefly assumes the role of Batgirl until she is stripped of the identity by Batman towards the conclusion of the story for violating his stringent codes. Within the same year, a new character introduced during the No Man's Land series, Cassandra Cain, created by Kelley Puckett and Damion Scott, becomes the fourth Batgirl, and she is mentored by Batman and Oracle. Cassandra Cain was the first version of the Batgirl character to be featured in an eponymous monthly series, which was published from 2000 to 2006, ending with Cain relinquishing her title as Batgirl. During the "Headhunt" arc of the Birds of Prey comic book series, the Charlotte Gage-Radcliffe character created by Gail Simone temporarily took the name of Batgirl, but was eventually forced to abandon the role by Oracle and subsequently adopted the alias "Misfit." Subsequently in the pages of Teen Titans, Cassandra Cain reclaimed her former identity as Batgirl.

The first "Batgirl" ongoing comic books were published in 2000 and featured Cassandra Cain as Batgirl. In 2009, a new Batgirl mini-series was created also featuring Cain whom, by the end of the series, passes on her Batgirl identity to character Stephanie Brown. The series is set to feature new characters, and feature Batman and Robin, who will monitor Stephanie Brown's actions as Batgirl. The series is a direct sequel to "Battle for the Cowl's" Oracle: The Cure.[citation needed]

The Hulk is a fictional character appearing in comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the character first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #1 (May 1962). In 2008, the hobbyist magazine Wizard named the Hulk the seventh-greatest Marvel Comics character. Empire Magazine named him the fourteenth greatest comic book character overall, and the fifth highest ranked in the Marvel stable.
The Hulk is cast as the emotional and impulsive alter ego of the withdrawn and reserved physicist Dr. Bruce Banner. The Hulk appears shortly after Banner is accidentally exposed to the blast of a test detonation of a gamma bomb he invented. Subsequently, Banner will involuntarily transform into the Hulk, depicted as a giant, raging, humanoid monster, leading to extreme complications in Banner's life. Lee said the Hulk's creation was inspired by a combination of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Frankenstein.
Although the Hulk's coloration has varied throughout the character's publication history, the most consistent shade is green. As the Hulk, Banner is capable of significant feats of strength, which increases in direct proportion to the character's anger. Strong emotions such as anger, terror and grief are also triggers for forcing Banner's transformation into the Hulk. A common storyline is the pursuit of both Banner and the Hulk by the police or the armed forces, due to the destruction he causes.
The character has since been depicted in various other media, most notably by Lou Ferrigno in a live action television series, six television movies, and an animated series; through the use of CGI in Hulk (2003) and The Incredible Hulk (2008), as well as in three animated series and various video games.

The Adventures of Asterix (French: Astérix or Astérix le Gaulois) is a series of French comic books written by René Goscinny and illustrated by Albert Uderzo (Uderzo also took over the job of writing the series after the death of Goscinny in 1977). The series first appeared in French in the magazine Pilote on 29 October 1959. As of 2009, 34 comic books in the series have been released.
The series follows the exploits of a village of ancient Gauls as they resist Roman occupation. They do so by means of a magic potion, brewed by their druid, which gives the recipient superhuman strength. The protagonist, the titular character, Asterix, along with his friend Obelix have various adventures. In many cases, this leads them to travel to various countries around the world, though other books are set in and around their village. For much of the history of the series (Volumes 4 through 29), settings in Gaul and abroad alternated, with even-numbered volumes set abroad and odd-numbered volumes set in Gaul, mostly in the village.
The Asterix seriesis one of the most popular Franco-Belgian comics in the world, with the series being translated into over 100 languages, and it is popular in most European countries. Asterix is less well known in the United States and Japan.
The success of the series has led to the adaptation of several books into 11 films; eight animated, and three with live actors. There have also been a number of games based on the characters, and a theme park near Paris, Parc Astérix, is themed around the series. To date, 325 million copies of 34 Asterix books have been sold worldwide, making co-creators Rene Goscinny and Albert Uderzo France's bestselling authors abroad.[1]

FANTASTIC FOUR

The group debuted in The Fantastic Four #1 (November 1961), which helped to usher in a new naturalism in the medium.
Published since June 19, 1978, it chronicles the life of the title character, the cat Garfield (named after Davis' grandfather); his owner, Jon Arbuckle; and Arbuckle's dog, Odie. As of 2007, it was syndicated in roughly 2,580 newspapers and journals, and held the Guinness World Record for being the world's most widely syndicated comic strip.[1]

Though this is never mentioned in print, Garfield is set in Muncie, Indiana, the home of Jim Davis, according to the television special Garfield Goes Hollywood. Common themes in the strip include Garfield's laziness, obsessive eating, and hatred of Mondays and diets. The strip's focus is mostly on the interactions among Garfield, Jon, and Odie; recurring minor characters appear as well.

Originally created with the intentions to "come up with a good, marketable character," Garfield has become an entire industry, with merchandise earning $750 million to $1 billion annually. In addition to the various merchandise and commercial tie-ins, the strip has spawned several animated television specials, two animated television series, two theatrical feature-length live-action films and three CGI animated direct-to-video movies. Part of the strip's broad appeal is due to its lack of social or political commentary; though this was Davis' original intention, he also admitted that his "grasp of politics isn't strong," remarking that, for many years, he thought "OPEC was a denture adhesive.

Ultimate Spider-Man was a superhero comic book series that was published by Marvel Comics from 2000 to 2009. The series is a modernized re-imagining of Marvel's long-running Spider-Man comic book franchise as part of its Ultimate Marvel imprint. Ultimate Spider-Man exists alongside other revamped Marvel characters in Ultimate Marvel titles including Ultimate X-Men, Ultimate Fantastic Four, and The Ultimates.
The protagonist of Ultimate Spider-Man is Peter Parker, a science whiz teenager who lives in Queens, New York. He is bitten by a genetically altered spider and inherits its powers, including enhanced strength, agility and reflexes. When an armed thief, whom Peter had a chance to stop earlier but didn't, kills his uncle Ben, he feels guilty and dedicates his life to fighting crime as the costumed vigilante Spider-Man. Peter tries to balance school, a job, a girlfriend, his family life with his widowed aunt May, and his activities as Spider-Man.
Ultimate Spider-Man first saw print in 2000 under veteran Spider-Man artist Mark Bagley and writer Brian Michael Bendis, who expanded the original 11-page origin story into a 180-page, seven issue story arc. This duo continued to collaborate until issue #111, when Mark Bagley left the book and was replaced by Stuart Immonen. Bendis and Bagley's run on Ultimate Spider-Man set the record for longest continual run on a Marvel Comics series by two people, an honor previously held by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby on Fantastic Four.

Astonishing X-Men is the name of three X-Men comic book series from Marvel Comics, the first two of which were limited series. The ongoing series began in 2004, with its first run written by Joss Whedon and art by John Cassaday. It is currently written by Warren Ellis with art by Simone Bianchi [1], who will pass the art chores on to Phil Jimenez in the near future[2]. A critical and commercial success, it focused on a roster consisting of Cyclops, Emma Frost, Shadowcat, Colossus, Beast and Wolverine. This roster has also been the focus of various limited series, such as X-Men: Phoenix - Endsong, X-Men: Phoenix - Warsong and World War Hulk: X-Men.

Robin (also referred to as The Boy Wonder) is the name of several fictional characters appearing in comic books published by DC Comics, originally created by Bob Kane, Bill Finger and Jerry Robinson, as a junior counterpart to DC Comics superhero Batman. The team of Batman and Robin is commonly referred to as the Dynamic Duo or the Caped Crusaders.
The first incarnation of the character—Dick Grayson—debuted in Detective Comics #38 (April 1940). Conceived as a vehicle to attract young readership, Robin garnered overwhelmingly positive critical reception, doubling the sales of the Batman related comic books.[1] The early adventures of Robin included Star Spangled Comics #65-130 (1947-1952), which was the character's first solo feature. As Robin, Dick Grayson made regular appearances in Batman related comic books and other DC Comics publications from 1940 through the early 1980s until the character was reinvented as the independent superhero Nightwing.
Following the retirement of Dick Grayson as Robin, a new version of the character—Jason Todd—debuted in Batman #357 (1983). The new character made regular appearances in Batman related comic books until 1988, when the character is murdered by the Joker in A Death in the Family (1989).
The premiere Robin limited series was published in 1991, featuring the third incarnation of the character—Tim Drake—training to earn the role of Batman's junior partner. Following two successful sequels, the monthly Robin ongoing series began in 1993 and ended in early 2009, which also helped establish Robin as a superhero in his own right.
After the forced retirement of Tim Drake (by his father) as Robin, Drake's on-and-off girlfriend, and an established DC Comics character named Stephanie Brown — alternatively known as the Spoiler — became the fourth incarnation of Robin and the first in-continuity female version of the character. However, shortly after her acquisition of the mantle of Robin, Stephanie was stripped of the identity by Batman and was apparently killed by the supervillain Black Mask in the crossover Batman: War Games (2004). It has since been revealed her death was a ruse. Following the "death" of Stephanie, the Tim Drake character reclaimed hisformer role as Robin the Boy Wonder.
In the final issue of Battle for the Cowl, Bruce Wayne's son, Damian Wayne becomes the new Robin after rescuing Tim from death, with Grayson becoming the new Batman. Tim Drake later takes on the identity of Red Robin.

Batman, originally referred to as "the Bat-Man" and still referred to at times as "the Batman", is a fictional character, a comic book superhero co-created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger (although only Kane receives official credit), appearing in publications by DC Comics. The character first appeared in Detective Comics #27 in May 1939.

He is additionally known as "the Caped Crusader", "the Dark Knight", "the World's Greatest Detective", or simply "the Bat"; in the original version of the story and the vast majority of subsequent retellings, Batman's secret identity is Bruce Wayne (named for the historical figures Robert the Bruce and "Mad" Anthony Wayne)[2], a billionaire playboy, industrialist, and philanthropist. Having witnessed the murder of his parents as a child, he swore revenge on crime, an oath tempered with the greater ideal of justice. Bruce trains himself both physically and intellectually and dons a bat-themed costume in order to fight crime.[3] Batman operates in the fictional American Gotham City, assisted by various supporting characters including his main sidekick Robin, his butler Alfred Pennyworth, the police commissioner Jim Gordon, and occasional assistance from the heroine Batgirl. He fights an assortment of villains influenced by the characters' roots in film and pulp magazines. Unlike most superheroes, he does not possess any superpowers; he makes use of intellect, detective skills, science and technology, wealth, physical prowess, and intimidation in his war on crime. In 2009, following Wayne's apparent death, the role of Batman has been taken up by his former ward and the first Robin, Dick Grayson.

Batman became a popular character soon after his introduction and gained his own comic book title, Batman, in 1940. As the decades wore on, differing interpretations of the character emerged. The late 1960s Batman television series used a camp aesthetic which continued to be associated with the character for years after the show ended. Various creators worked to return the character to his dark roots, culminating in the 1986 miniseries Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, by writer-artist Frank Miller, while the success of film director Tim Burton's 1989 film Batman helped to reignite popular interest in the character. A cultural icon, Batman has been licensed and adapted into a variety of media, from radio to television and film, and appears on a variety of merchandise sold all over the world.

IRONMAN

Iron Man is a fictional character, a superhero that appears in comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character first appeared in Tales of Suspense #39 (March 1963), and was created by writer-editor Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, and artists Don Heck and Jack Kirby.

Born Anthony Edward "Tony" Stark, he is an industrialist playboy and genius engineer who suffers a severe heart injury during a kidnapping in which his captors attempt to force him to build a massively destructive weapon. He instead creates a powered suit of armor to save his life and escape captivity. He later decides to use the suit to protect the world as Iron Man.[1] Through his multinational corporation, Stark Industries, Tony created military weapons and his own metal suit is laden with technological devices that enable him to fight crime. Initially, Iron Man was a vehicle for Stan Lee to explore Cold War themes, particularly the role of American technology and business in the fight against communism. Subsequent re-imaginings of Iron Man have gradually removed the Cold War themes, replacing them with more contemporary concerns such as corporate crime and terrorism.

Throughout most of the comic's history, Iron Man has been a member of the superhero team the Avengers and has been featured in several incarnations of his own various comic book series. The character has been adapted for several animated TV shows and films. The character is portrayed by Robert Downey, Jr. in the live action film Iron Man and features briefly in The Incredible Hulk; Downey will reprise the role in the upcoming sequel, Iron Man 2.

SuperGod is the new superhero title from Warren Ellis and Garrie Gastonny, published by Avatar. It is intended as a thematic threequel to Black Summer and No Hero, which explored superheroes from very different angles. This time, it’s from the perspective or a superhero who is no longer human and tackles subjects seen in the likes of Watchmen, Marvelman, Stormwatch and Maximortal.
It also looks bloody lovely and has the kind of cover that could well get media attention on release. What do you think?
I vaguely know an ex-Archbishop Of Canterbury. I may try and show him a copy to see what he thinks.
Then publish the review, obviously. This is an exclusive preview of the comic, to be published in November.

Strange Killings

This is actually a trade from Avatar Press, written by Warren Ellis and drawn by Mike Wolfer. All black and white, 144 pages and generally fun stuff.
Its a story dealing with combat magician William Gravel who has been resurrected in the new Gravel mini series
The short version of the story is that a group of assassins who used to be under Gravel’s command kill a senator and pin the blame on him, so he kicks their asses. The End.
This might not seem like that much story to fill 144 pages, and to be honest a writer of Ellis’ skill could probably give us the same story in a third of that, but this book feels deliberately decompressed in the action scenes. Whereas normally writers spend 6 pages on a conversation when they are accused of decompression, this book gets that out of the way and can spend 3 pages on one kick to the head. Quite unlike any pacing I’ve read before and I really enjoyed it. That said, this comic book slomo combined with the running up walls and acrobatic gun-play do lend themselves to obvious comparisons to The Matrix and the cynic in me was seeing the whole thing as a bit of an extended movie pitch… but when the ride was this much fun, who cares?

Planetary was an American comic book series created by Warren Ellis (writer) and John Cassaday (artist), published by the Wildstorm imprint of DC Comics. Planetary also refers to the group portrayed in the series.
Planetary was previewed in the September 1998 issues of Gen¹³ (#33) and C-23 (#6), and issue #1 was cover-dated April 1999. It was originally intended to be a 24-issue bi-monthly series. However due to illness of Ellis and other commitments by Cassaday, the series was put on hiatus between 2001 and 2003; it has since restarted and concluded with issue #27 in October of 2009.
Laura Martin (also credited as Laura DePuy) has colored almost every issue of the series.
