Introducing The New IDA Desalination Academy

Building on the foundation of its work for over a quarter of a century, the International Desalination Association (IDA) is pleased and honored to announce its exciting new enterprise, The IDA Academy. The academy will feature a multi-disciplinary course curriculum around the world in flexible formats with the first set of courses to be offered at this year’s Singapore International Water Week.

The Academy will kick-off on Wednesday, July 4th extending through July 5th, and will be limited to 75 participants per course. Course topics will range from in-depth examination of membrane and thermal technologies, to costing strategies, plant operations and case studies.

Take the opportunity to learn from the world’s most distinguished, proven leaders in desalination today. The inaugural two-day curriculum will feature two concurrent half-day courses offered morning and afternoon. Your course can be tailored to your particular interest area and professional needs. You may attend any two of the courses on Day One or up to four courses over both days. Please click here for a current course schedule.

Master Teachers for these inaugural courses were selected from a long line of desalination experts across the globe, distinguished by theoretical and practical knowledge and experience: Ms. Lisa Henthorne, Dr. Mark Wilf, Mr. Nikolay Voutchkov, Mr. David H. Paul, Dr. Corrado Sommariva and Mr. Leon Awerbuch. Please check back for updates on how to register for these courses.

This workshop presents the state-of-the-art in seawater reverse osmosis desalination technology and features recent desalination cost and energy use trends. The workshop also discusses advances in desalination plant intake and pretreatment design with focus on new intake configurations and chemical cleaning approaches; optimization of chemical use for source seawater conditioning; and suitability of dissolved air flotation (DAF) for effective algal bloom control. A critical review of key advantages and disadvantages of membrane and conventional pretreatment is presented and factors affecting the selection of the most viable pretreatment alternative are evaluated from a practical point-of-view.

The workshop provides an overview of the most recent novel seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) system configurations and post-treatment technology advancements. The benefits and challenges associated with using innovative reverse osmosis train configurations including split partial second pass systems; three-center designs; vertical membrane vessel configurations; and the use of 16-inch RO membrane elements are critically evaluated. The speaker also shares a full-scale experience with the use of novel limestone contactor configurations and designs.

Operation and maintenance (O&M) of seawater desalination systems in a one of the main focus areas of this workshop. The covered O&M topics include operation and monitoring; troubleshooting; and optimization of plant performance in terms of energy and cost of fresh water production. Innovative solutions to performance and treatment challenges facing many desalination plants worldwide are illustrated by two examples of large desalination plants: the 95,000 m³/day Tampa Bay Seawater Desalination Plant in the USA and the 140,000 m³/day Fujairah SWRO Desalination Facility.

The workshop will have an open format providing opportunities for the participants to participate interactively and to share experiences and views with their peers. The program will provide valuable insights for desalination plant designers, equipment and membrane developers, and practitioners involved with the operation and maintenance of reverse osmosis desalination projects.
