I haven’t posted a painting this week so I thought I would post a painting in progress to show what I have been doing. This is a commissioned painting from a very small 20+ year old photo. It is a wonderful scene where a child has fallen asleep after getting up to see if Santa came during the night. Apparently it was a little too early and he crashed among the presents. A very sweet memory for his mother.

This painting size is about 16 x 22″ and the photo is about a 3×5″ and the area I painted from in the photo is even smaller than that, so I had to scan the original photo in a very high resolution to blow it up on my computer to see any detail at all.  I took a lot of liberties with the colors, particularly in the tree, since having a very dark green tree would take away from the focal area of the little boy. I wanted the painting to remain “soft” all over, given the subject matter, and stayed away from overly bright and competing colors. Notice the brighter packages are closer to the subject, bringing in your eye, where the lighter packages are more in the perimeter.

The painting is almost finished. I still need to add a little color in the white areas of the background, and then add some middle-darks below in the packages to give the painting some overall cohesiveness. When I get it finished I’ll post it again.

SOLD! Collection: S. Marshall, Louisville, KY
