This time the subject of may paining is one of the most beautiful places in Lithuania. I was fortunate to spent two vacation weeks here. Oh... there was a huge plan to paint everyday to advance more. Bigger part of a luggage was taken by paining materials and as always only a small part was used. One paining in two weeks is not something, although it's better than nothing :)

Watercolor on Moulin du Roy

Landscape is my favorite subject in painting watercolor. Nature inspires and probably this is the main force that drives me to paint. I love watching passing clouds, changing light, running water, all possible colors and reflections. And although skies and water usually are the core of a good landscape painting, for me they are the most difficult objects to portray. But there is a saying “do what you are afraid of” - so I’m trying. Practice is the best teacher.

I have almost written off this painting - the first attempt dissatisfied, I completely messed up the sky, overworked, which lead to mud where it was not supposed to be. At the point when all I wanted was to throw a messed sheet of paper away, said “No” to desperation and decided to give it a try. Washed the colors off with large water current in the sink and started once more. Then it came. I cannot say that I’m completely happy about the outcome – it is better – but I’m happy about the persistence it taught me.

I’ve learned another thing – overworking in a process of learning is way better than not doing enough. It teaches bravery in fixing flaws of the painting, applying new techniques, and gives outcomes which probably would never be possible without going too far.

Watercolor on Canson Moulin du Roy 30x40

Green fern leaves and a plastic film was used to create texture in the front. This is quite an exciting technique, as you will never know, how the pigment will sink into the paper. I used ultramarine, cadmium yellow, lemon yellow, burnt sienna, and burnt umber. The last color was a risky choice, my last three attempts with same palette were not successful - got a lot of muddy spots. This time mud was avoided by putting burnt umber directly on ultramarine, trying to avoid mixing with yellow colors. As I think of what I would do differently having a second chance to this painting - probably would make the distant trees lighter, colors less intense to create more expressed perspective.

Watercolor on Canson Moulin du Roy

Recently I found out that watercolor paper moistened from both sides does dry so fast, remains smooth and does not create ripples. In this painting I used masking fluid, wet on wet technique, and a touch of white gouache for birch trunks.

Watercolor on Arches

This painting was inspired by one of my hiking trips, during which we went out into the wild, to listen to the returning cranes bringing back to our land the spring. Imagine after all day clamping throught the damp moss, you finally get to the swamp... you hear nothing, just the silence and your beating heart. It seems the time has stopped and you could stand there for eternity, breathing and listening.. then the sound of huge flapping wings and a scream penetrating every cell of your body awakens you... awakens you for real, to live, to want, to enjoy life and to go on.

Have you ever heard a crane scream? It is something you can hardly forget, highly recommend :)

This is another painting following forest theme. It was a rainy, fogy day when I took the reference photo. All atmosphere was penetrated with blues, only humps of different kind of moss were glowing back showing their bright colors.

Here i've tried to depict summer forest, with sun playing on tree branches and green moss. It feels like the painting got too plain, depth and contrast is missing, ant at the same time I'm afraid to overwork and completely ruin it :) ech... this time will leave it as it is... for previous few months I have a tendency to overwork paintings.

I'm living on a vacation mode. There were time when i felt frustration of not painting periods, feeling that time is wasted without any progress, but after two weeks hiking trip to Swedish mountains, absolute calmness came. Even daily household routines became enjoyable. Mountains teach a lot. One of the main lessons- to value simple being, to live without fearfully counting minutes. There is no time in the mountains, just your heavy backpack and several thousand steps until next resting place.
I feel similarly with painting. There is no time, just several hundred paintbrush strokes, just colours going here and there, sometimes obeying, but usually not:) until you feel that it is finished.
Below is a quick sketch of my favorit place of childhood called 'wild beach'. Strange memory intersections meet here.

The spring is now in its full strength, green has concured all around so I'm a bit late with this spring buds painting. It took three weeks to finish it, with huge gaps in between painting. But i'm happy i didn't leave it and now can move on to something new:)
