style="text-align:justify">What a fine day for skiing! Last night it snowed again; two inches in Waterville Valley. When seven Nordics met at Depot parking lot we found the trails freshly groomed for us. The temperature hovered around freezing and a breeze made it feel colder. However, the sun was pouring down on us and after skiing up Lower Osceola we were so warm that we were shedding some clothing. The snow cover was perfect; amazing for this time of the year. A couple Nordics skied Moose Run and Wicked Easy, the others went up Osceola all the way to the top and down, some returning via John Deer. Even the steep section on John Deer showed no sign of deteriorating snow. On our way back we met Angel who joined us. We skied together to Bob’s Lookout for photos since today is Paul’s and my 48th anniversary and we wanted to record our celebration. Then off to Jugtown for sandwiches. We had brought along a big bottle of red wine and Karen invited us to have lunch in her apartment which Paul has named “Karen’s Kastle”. What a beautiful place with such great views. For dessert I had baked cookie bars for our celebration and Karen made coffee to go along with them. We had such a wonderful time. Thank you very much, Karen. While we were enjoying ourselves we didn’t notice that the sun had disappeared but all of a sudden we noticed that it was snowing again.

What a great ski season we have had. I will be working as a volunteer in the Mt. Washington Observatory for a week, starting next Wednesday and won’t be able to ski. However, if the conditions allow Paul may ski again with any of you who would like to continue. To all of you a great summer until we meet again.

Fresh Powder in April?!

This is something that doesn't happen too often on the east coast. Fresh snow in April. This is not some April Fool's Day joke. And on Dollar Day. How much better can it get? Skiing fresh snow in April for one dollar. The people are out and about all over the mountain enjoying the fresh snow. This morning I took some runs on Gema, Upper Bobby's and Tyler, too. All were enjoyable and the people seemed to be enjoying the runs they took.
This weekend we have our last two big events of the season. On Saturday, we have Boxes for Days. This is when the park takes the normal boxes and puts them together in a line to create one large and difficult box to slide. That should be an enjoyable event to watch. Then on Sunday, we have our Extreme Pond Skim. Who doesn't like watching people trying to skim across a pond on their skis? I think of warm weather, slushy conditions, and skiing in a sweatshirt. Well today was a throwback to January/February type weather. It was cold and windy too. But the sun was still shining and it looked like a spring day. It just felt like it was January. The people seemed to enjoy it though. The crowds were in and the people were enjoying the snow. As the morning went on, the winds died down and the temperatures began warming up little by little.
I started off the morning with a run down White Caps and I ended up cutting over to Tippecanoe and down to Lower Tippy. With the wind and weather, I was a bit chilly but I went up for a few more runs. I then took a run down Oblivion to Valley Run, which is one of my favorite runs on the mountain just for the view. I then finished up with a run down Upper Bobby's and cut over to Upper Sel's Choice and then over to Exhibition. The conditions varied but that is to be expected. Hopefully the spring weather will return in the coming weeks and we can end the season on a nice warm note!

-Mike

Spring Like Day

If you weren't able to make it out onto the snow today I am sorry. Spring like temps under bluebird skies a great respite from our normal February days. We spent some time doing toboggan training on True Grit this morning and every run reminded me of the great spring we had last year. Alas, more seasonal temps will be returning tomorrow night, so we will be waiting a few more weeks before tee shirt temps to arrive.
This weekend there are two big events happening at Waterville Valley; first starting tomorrow is the North Face Park and Pipe Open Series and on starting Saturday the Plymouth State Ski Team is hosting ECSC regional races. The North Face event is drawing a large group of talented rides who put on quite a show in the Exhibition park today. Exhibition received a face lift this week with a new arrangement of the rail garden and some maintenance of the airs. The regional races are bringing racers from all over the northeast to compete at Waterville, so that they may qualify for nationals. There should be some great skiing and riding to watch as well as great conditions this weekend. Hope to see you out there

b

Be Open Minded

Every Wednesday we help to chaperon the Waterville Valley Elementary School's ski program. I have to admit that I was feeling a little skeptical this week with how the temps had been drastically jumping up and down and the fact that we haven't had too much snow recently. To my surprise, it was some of the best snow I have seen, especially for being in the afternoon!
Usually I ski with the advanced group of kids, but this week we switched it up and I went with the beginner skiers. It was so much fun watching them get pointers from their instructor and to see how much they improved in just one afternoon! Their instructor asked if they wanted to go into the Valley Run woods, some were a little nervous, but they conquered it and by the end of the day we got them up to the top of the mountain to enjoy and nice long run down Oblivion.
The snow was great all afternoon, so never judge the conditions up there by the weather down below!!

-5 wont stop this crew!

This morning I woke up to a pretty chilly sight on our thermometer...-5! My Fiance, Eric, couldn't believe that I was actually going to meet up with other Rec. staff for some runs before work. Well, I'm glad we all went. It seems that Fridays have had quit the trend of giving us those nice blue skies! The snow was great, as it always is when you get there bright and early. After a few runs we stopped into the Schwendi Hutte for some hot chocolate and an amazing breakfast burrito! The temps were on the rise and its a beautiful day...so get out there!

Starry Night

Oh, what a night! First a gathering at the base lodge to explain the agenda of the evening - then to Quadzilla for a ride up Valley Run at dusk and a gentle ski down to Sunnyside Lodge. The excitement begins - ski jackets and boots come off and we're given some cozy ski socks to wear upstairs. The second floor of the lodge has been transformed from a mountain cafeteria into a dimly lit cocktail party. The wine is flowing - the violinist plays background music as the conversations grow animated and appetizers are passed. Then it's time to dine - the food is exceptional - rack of lamb, beef tenderloin, salmon, and a vegetarian dish. Servers continue to float through the room refilling wine glasses and Joe Jung tells stories about the high mountain farms in Austria. The atmosphere was so intimate, by the end of the evening everyone felt like family. Then it was time for the torchlight ski - we were all given battery lights to help us along as we skied down Valley Run making first tracks. An unforgettable night. There are two more "Starry Nights" planned, so sign up soon if you want to experience this special event.
Terry Roper

SUPER bowl Sunday!

After last night's "lightening and variable precipitation" storm, I was a bit nervous that I had left our 1 ski day this weekend for today. If I had made a bad decision, I was prepared to pay the consequence of unhappy kids and a lot of wasted time. Was I ever wrong! Even though we left behind a sunny, warm, and windless personal playground just 10 miles away, it was well worth it. Despite ample parking spaces and a short walk, we hopped on the trolley that was so conveniently waiting. Immediately, we were greeted by a variety of demo/info canopies set up in front of Sport Thoma for the kids to explore. We booted up quickly and got on the hill. It had been awhile since we skied due to sprained ankles, birthday parties, theatre, etc. So today was a great; and the kids were so excited to see that everything was open and skiable. We only stopped quickly at the Sunnyside Lodge for a quick bite to eat. My kids think they have the best hot dogs! The conditions were fantastic and the trees were loaded with soft, soft newly fallen snow. By noon, lift lines were non-existent. Eleven Nordics met early and two joined us later. Upon our arrival at the Nordic Center at 9 a.m. the temperature was 9°F; however, when we started skiing an hour later it had risen to 20° and the sun was shining brilliantly. Several of us were overdressed and had to shed layers soon. The sky was deep blue and the snow-laden trees sparkling. Two guests who were new to xc-skiing together with a couple of us skied Snows Brook, turned around, then Lower Fletcher and back. Two Nordics skied Criterion and the rest of the group went up Sloppy Joes with Bob. The plan was for them to ski back via HB Highway where I had planned to meet them. There were no skiers besides me on HB Highway! Thinking I missed them I returned to the Nordic Center. They weren’t back yet. Where were they? Half an hour later an excited and exhilarated group returned. They had taken a wrong turn at some point and ended up skiing Dry Joes and Drakes Brook all the way to the brook, then under the road and back via the Village Trail. Wow! A new group of expert Nordics! These were perfect conditions for Drakes Brook. In the Nordic Center, to go with lunch, we had homemade goodies: Bob had baked his famous delectable lemon bars, Lynn scrumptious chocolate chip cookies and I brought decadent brownies. Thank you, Bob and Lynn.

Joyce is recovering well and we miss her. To help her out Walt brought “rehab” ski poles to be delivered to her, namely crutches with ski baskets and hand straps.

What a great day. Skiing yesterday was super early and got somewhat clumpy later - at the end of the day, you knew you skied hard. Today was a definite "10". The sun seem to come up much earlier today and was so much brighter on the snow. Raccoon eyes will be appearing all over the mountain this weekend.
Terry Roper

Village Apres-ski and the Snowshoe Tour

Even after the so-called "Monster" storm came through Wednesday, we still had 30 or so Silver Streaks who enjoyed mingling at the Village Rec. room. We also listened to an informational talk by Melinda Johnston, the Physical Therapist in Campton. Many of the Silver Streaks in the room already knew Melinda professionally - she's helped a lot of us out with strains and issues. Melind talked about stretches and exercises we could do to keep us in the best skiing shape. It was very generous of her to take the time and travel out to Waterville in the bad weather. On Thursday evening we headed out from the Nordic Center for a "sparkling" snowshoe tour. The light from our headlamps made the surface of the snow shine in the crisp, clear night air. We stopped and Al Larsson described the various constellations while pointing with his green laser light - with no moon, the sky was full of stars. Gigi told us about the slaves who made their way to Canada following the North star. We finished a great evening at Diamond's Edge with some hot chili and cold drinks.
Terry Roper

High Country 1-31-11

Silver Streaks at Sunnyside Timberpeg Lodge

What a great lunch today at Sunnyside. Terrific salad with veggies, then chicken chili, plus the greatest mac and cheese (yummy) ending with a big chocolate chip cookie for dessert. All that with enjoyable company around a cozy fireplace. We all met chef Jack Salavoncik who told us of interesting Sunnyside events to come. This Saturday there will be the 2nd of the Gourmet Dinners on the Mountain. You go up Valle Run on Quadzilla and ski down to Sunnyside Lodge. You are met with slippers so you have something to wear instead of ski boots. Then up to the 2nd level which is set up with dimmed lights and wine glasses - very romantic. Last dinner had rack of lamb, salmon, fillet minion and more. Afterwards, you ski down the hill between ski instructors holding torchlights. If you'd like to sign up for this Saturday - do it right away - call 236-8311, then press zero to make a reservation. Next dinner is Feb. 26th. Jack also wants us to know that he'll be serving brunch now on Sunday mornings between 10am and 1pm. he'll have an omelet station making "made to order" omelets. He'll have other items too. Lots of new and exciting things happening at the mountain - check them out. We're getting more snow - what could be better!
Terry Roper

Changes in Silver Streak Events

There may be lots of snow on Wednesday with dangerous roads. So, we're again changing the day of the Nordic group - this week we'll be meeting with Gigi on Friday which promises to be a beautiful day. The race clinic that we were going to have with Jay Dunn and Klaus Buttinger will have to be postponed. Jay Dunn has an injury but I hope it will heal quickly so we can re-schedule. Until then, the race clinic is on hold. The Starlight Snowshoe tour will leave from the Nordic Center at 6pm but please be there at at 5:30 so we can get organized.(and please sign up so we can give Diamond's Edge a count). We'll be back around 7pm and then up to Diamond's Edge for chili. Wear your headlamps if you have them but our guides will have them and usually those two or three headlamps are enough to light the way. The charge this year is $15 per person for the tour and chili. Looks like we'll be going out on some fresh snow - it should be a delightful evening.

Terry Roper

Big Week for Silver Streaks

We've got a busy week ahead. The sun was beaming on the fresh corduroy as we rode the up the chairlift. Butterflies and excitement ran through us for those fresh runs on the groomers . And that it was! Upper Bobby's to Utter Abandon proved to be a great first run. The only thing better was when we went to our trusty sunnyside to still find soft and fresh groomers for a few more runs. True Grit was our favorite of the day. Warm, sunny, and soft for some big old fast turns! Like I always say, "the early bird gets the worm" and was now ready for fun filled day of work down at the Rec. Dept.!

That was a cold start to the week

Wow it was cold early this week. Starting Sunday afternoon a cold air mass moved in and the temperatures plunged just as people up for the weekend headed home, by closing we were down to five degrees below zero. The temperatures just kept falling overnight, lows reached -25 at the mountain and at some point during the night it was cold enough to break my thermometer at the house. However, the skiing Monday was great for those braved the weather to grab a few runs with soft and fast snow. The weather has improved with warmer air being pushed in by the storm that hit Massachusetts and points south early this morning. Though the snow missed us this time the forecast for the weekend looks good.
If you are able to make it up to the valley this weekend, for the great skiing and riding, be sure to check out the mogul competition happening on Saturday and Sunday this weekend. The BBTS athletes and coaches have been working hard to get the course on Lower Bobby's in pristine shape for the weekend. A great view of the course is from the bottom of the trail, if you don't feel like skiing the trail. I hope to see you out there soon.

B

Skiing Today and Events Coming

Great skiing today - dusting of powder over packed surface - what could be better. Tomorrow we'll have our apres-ski at the Golden Eagle Lobby again. Please bring an appetizer and/or beverage to share. Next week there are 2 events coming up. The Eastern Regional Championship Races for Disabled skiers will be held on Wednesday & Thursday - the 2nd and 3rd. We're looking for volunteers for gatekeeping, course maintenance & board markers. Please let us know if you can help out. We're also offering a 3 day senior package to introduce 50+ skiers to the mountain. It includes skiing, clinics and lodging so please tell any friends who may be interested - $295pp double occupancy and $395 single occupancy. Along with that promotion we'll be having a race clinic next Thursday with Jay Dunn and Klaus Buttinger which will be open to Silver Streaks as well for just $10. We also have sign-up sheets at the mountain for both the Sunnyside Lunch on Monday and the race clinic. Please take a look at the updated calendar - all our apres-ski parties are there. All for now - see you tomorrow.
Terry Roper
