Today’s itinerary is a little R and R, a trip to Dubai, then to the airport and finally home. We start with breakfast by the pool. A buffet with many familiar treats including eggs and sausage (non-pork of course), some local fair (somasas) and surprise, gravlax. The pool is a pleasure to all, heated to bathtub warmth and big enough for reasonable laps; it also has a bar in it for those inclined to imbibe while partially submersed.

Well fed and well hidden in the Yas Island Rotuna Hotel we begin the conference.
I got a full dollop of Abu Dhabi sites and life courtesy of a generous tour by Mohamad Trabusi of the Adu Dhabi Ports Company. The tour begins with a discussion of the late Sheikh Zayed, a larger than life figure who led Abu Dhabi and forged the United Arab Emirates. He is the father of the UAE -- their George Washington. His face name and mark is all over the city. Like Las Vegas or Phoenix, Abu Dhabi is carved out of desert land.

Just arrived in Abu Dhabi. The trip was pleasantly uneventful with room to stretch in half filled planes and stellar service even for us in economy courtesy of Lufthansa. Stark contrast with cattle car pay-for-everything US flying experience.

Two hours now in UAE shows me it is an immigrant filled very friendly country with nods and smiles from strangers.
