A planned shutdown of production meant that the plant's water cooling system would not be required for around a month. Tens of thousands of pounds worth of damage to the process cooling system had been suffered during a similar cold snap last year.

The Facilities Management company involved were challenged to provide a temporary heater solution to avoid the equipment sustaining similar harm again. In reality few solutions were available. Heating the plant room with IDF heaters seemed possible, however a huge amount of equipment would have been required. The site electric power system would not be suitable for the volume of temporary heaters and temporary generators would also be required. The cost began to mount up and with some pipe work on the exterior of the plant room, there was no guarantee that frost damage would not occur.

However, after an introduction to Watkins Hire and a meeting with their Hire Specialist Manager for Ireland - Brian Woods, a quick and cost effective temporary heating boiler solution was developed.

The solution was to connect a MBR HeatGEN 100kw mobile boiler unit via BSP 2" tie-in points on to the existing pipe system. Flexible 2" hoses connected the boiler hire unit via Bauer quick release fittings to the 2"BSP connectors. The MBR100 could run natural gas or 35sec diesel oil. Oil was the chosen option so a fully Bunded 1000 ltr fuel tank was connected. The electrical supply required was 230volts single phase, through a 16amp BS4343 plug.

The MBR HeatGEN 100kw boiler unit produces 1500 plus litres/hr of 55°c hot water. The water circulated at around 2ltrs/sec via the MBR100's pump and returning to the boiler unit at around 45°c.

The site ‘Technical Superintendent’ said “the unit worked superb, it ran with no trouble, we suffered no damage to our plant and we will certainly be looking to hire the unit again next year!”

Jason was able to complete a free site survey and recommend our MH170 Mobile heater and 3000 litre fuel tank be used, a quotation was prepared and accepted whilst on site and people set to work to get the equipment to site and installed that evening.

Installation was not straight forward as the heat had to be ducted up the side of the store and along the roof of the building into the stores existing Air Handling unit heating system a total of approx 80 meters, this was done using Watkins Heater Hire high temperature ducting in 6 meter lengths which were coupled together then pulled up the side of the building and laid across the roof where temporary lighting had to be installed as it was well into the evening and was getting dark.

Watkins Hire were able to get heat into the store that evening only 7 hours after getting the first telephone call, the store manager said “I am amazed with the speed that this was achieved and that it was all project managed and caused no additional disruption to the store, Watkins hire were also able to provide the fuel and monitor the level in the tank and replenish supply as and when required which was another headache taken care of, I would not hesitate to use or recommend Watkins Hire in the future”.

Building hand-over date falling behind due to high moisture content in the floor screed and associated slow drying caused by inclement weather conditions and building not being “air tight” resulting in ;-

1. Floor screed too wet to lay new vinyl flooring though out new building of 3,500 m².
2. Delay (by M & E Contractor) of newly installed boiler & heating services not ready in time to assist drying.

(The client previously used Aggreko with IDF heaters with lots of ducting throughout building “which were expensive and took a very long time”).

Application requirement

Dry floor screed to four designated “phases” of the building each at different times and speeds to be in line with estimated floor layers work.

The Solution

Supply  two Watkins Hire MBR 250kw mobile boilers & GSM monitored 3000-litre fuel tanks c/w pipe work and appropriate tee manifolds to the designated newly installed under floor heating system.

Following the recent inclement weather conditions, Watkins Hire Ltd were asked to provide a solution to a major national building contractors problem of appropriately drying out 3,500 m² of floor screed without causing any associated damage to the floor.

WHL past and current under floor heating projects offer their customers a “one stop” drying solution particularly where the new boiler plant has yet to be commissioned and newly laid flooring needs to be carefully dried.

Specialist hire director Andy Ellis visited the Basildon site and discussed the application with site Mangers Quantity Surveyor.

Andrews 23 year Temperature control hire application experience involving boilers and chillers helped advise the building contractors to utilise the existing under floor heating system connected to two WHL 250kw LPHW boilers.

“The builder required four different floor areas to be dried at different drying rates and times to meet the proposed floor layers programme of works” said WHL’s Andy Ellis, and the process needed well controlled temperature gradients to ensure the drying did not cause other problems.

Each hire boiler was connected to a total of 19 newly installed under floor heating manifolds with low temperature hot water circulating through the temporary pipe work installed by WHL engineers.

WHL’s unique global satellite monitoring (GSM) telemetry system fitted to their equipment also helped the builder to maintain continuity of heating throughout the hire and eliminated any down time and associated problems involving additional refuelling deliveries or possible equipment breakdowns.

Watkins Hire Chiller Hire specialist Chris Easterlow carried out a detailed survey, he looked at the situation on site including transport access, available space for positioning equipment on the roof of the building, site power conditions, routes for chilled water pipe work, before leaving site he carefully measured the exact distances required for power cables, steelworks (to build a new base for positioning the equipment) and flexible pipe works. With his specialist knowledge Watkins Hire developed an engineered solution. The KwikCHILL 80 chiller was selected to match the cooling demand required for the separate areas and because the super quiet 54 db(A) Sound pressure level (10m) to ensure no disturbance to local residents as the building is on a main road in a housing estate.

The Facilities Manager said “Watkins Hire responded immediately to our enquiry, their specialist manager was on site within 2 hours, and offered a fast efficient cooling solution. The way in which Watkins Hire were going to run the project gave us complete satisfaction that we did not have to bring in any sub-contractors. The whole project from delivery, contract crane lift, on site works, electrical installation and commissioning of the system were all handled by the Watkins Hire project manager. They could also install at the weekend to prevent any disturbance to our day to day running of the hospital. Along with the fact that the chiller supplied was the most energy efficient from the alternatives the whole project sold itself”

The rental chiller was delivered on the Saturday by Watkins Hire own transport and the chiller hire unit was lifted onto the building using a certified crane contractor, the 80kW Trane Aquastream Chiller has a dual refrigeration circuit and 2 compressors and as such provides built-in emergency cover. A fabricator was also on site to weld temporary flanged adaptors into the customers system to allow Watkins Hire flexible chilled water pipes to be connected to the building existing air distribution system. A Watkins Hire qualified electrician was also on site to complete the installation of the power to allow the system to operate. The installation was started at 7.00a.m on Saturday morning and the system was fully operational by 4.30p.m in the afternoon.

The facilities manager continues “We have worked with other companies in the past for temporary cooling equipment, the speed in which Watkins had reacted and helped us far exceeded our expectations, we are very happy to recommend Watkins Hire because of the standard of the equipment supplied and the level of service supplied by Watkins Chiller Hire. They handled the whole project with a level of competence and professionalism, we have now put in placed an agreement with Watkins Hire for all temporary cooling, heating and boiler equipment.”

Chris ran through the whole project before leaving site so that the maintenance manager had a plan of Watkins Boiler Hire solution.

A HeatGEN MBR250 Packaged heating boiler plant room was selected to match the heating demand required for the building demand and because the efficiency (92%) offered the trust a cost saving on the fuel and the super quiet sound level (45 Dba@10m) ensured no disturbance to patients or staff.

The Facilities Manager said “Watkins Hire were on site within 2 hours of us placing the enquiry, their specialist sales manager completed his survey and had a solution to our problem whilst still in our office. When all of the options were considered we made the decision to place the contract with Watkins Hire. The operation of the packaged plant room left us with no hesitation that this was the right piece of equipment for the job. Along with the equipment being available and Watkins Hire offering a Web based fuel management service, it leaves us with piece of mind that the staff will have no complaints about being cold.”

The next day the packaged plant room delivered by Watkins Hire own transport and the hire unit along with the bunded fuel tank was sited outside the building, the MBR250 has a dual circuit system which can deliver heating and domestic hot water although on this project it was only the heating that was required. The equipment was connected to the customers pipe work via a system of flexible hoses and distributed to two separate heating circuits in the building via a manifold system that was supplied by Watkins Hire. To prevent any members of the public tripping over the flexible hoses Watkins Hire also supplied pedestrian ramps to cover the flexible hoses. The whole system was operational and delivering heat to the building within 4 hours of the packaged plant room being delivered to site.

Watkins Hire has supplied temporary space cooling temperature control solution to one of the UK's leading storage and logistics facilities in Manchester who provide seasonal storage, distribution & transportation for the whole of Europe for a major food producer. The company had secured a contract to store confectionary products manufactured during the summer months to be sold during the lead up to Christmas but the temperature must remain below 18°C to and humidity below 70% to prevent spoiling during storage to comply with their contract. The 47,000 m³ warehouse allocated for this contract did not have an installed space cooling or humidity control facilities.

Watkins Hire Chiller Hire specialist Chris Easterlow carried out a detailed building survey, he looked at the situation on site including transport access, available space for siting equipment both internally and externally, site power conditions, routes for flexible chilled water pipe work, before leaving site he carefully analyzed the exact storage method and the temperature and humidity requirements. With his specialist knowledge Watkins Hire developed an engineered solution. The KwikCHILL 500 chiller was selected to match the industrial space cooling demand and because the super quiet 66 db(A) Sound pressure level (10m) to ensure no disturbance to local residents.

The Site Operations Director said “Watkins Hire responded immediately to our enquiry, their specialist industrial space cooling engineer was on site with four hours of our enquiry, and offered a fast efficient space cooling solution. It did not really surprise me that it was also the most cost-effective solution. The next day the rental chiller delivered by Watkins Hire own transport and the chiller hire unit was sited outside the building, the 500kW Trane Aquastream Chiller has a dual refrigeration circuit and six compressors and as such provides built-in emergency cover. The three 150kW air handling units each producing 20000-m³/hr giving and installed of capacity 60,000 m³/hr were installed inside the building at high level on scaffolding keeping clearance for fork-lift trucks operating in the 14 metre high bay facility. The air handling units were installed inside the storage warehouse providing a very efficient temporary cooling solution by 100% air recirculation. The chilled air was distributed evenly throughout storage facility using temporary flexible ducting suspended from the ceiling by Watkins engineers. The chilled water pipe work system was installed in one day using flexible hoses and quick connectors for speed.

Watkins Hire also provided a temporary power generator rated at 800kvA via an external distribution board close to the chiller to enable the facility to be chilled immediately, this gave the client time to install a dedicated power supply to run all the cooling equipment.

Watkins Hire installed a mobile 170kw chiller hire unit with 6 off 30kw internal air handlers as temperatures soared to 32° C in the process area.

Due to their recent expansion the food processing company was experiencing unacceptable temperatures in there process area, the addition of two new machines that were constantly generating heat had made working conditions very uncomfortable with temperatures soaring up to 32° C, the engineering manager advised our South Wales Sales Engineer Jason Campbell, he was looking for a solution to cool the processing area which now had four machines in constant use generating large amounts of heat and workers were threatening to down tools.

The Solution

When a leading supermarket chain wanted help to maintain their cooling during the last summers heatwave, as there existing AHU heating system was unable to keep up with the cooling demand at one of its stores. They contacted Watkins Hire for an emergency hire solution that included a KwikCHILL 80kW Trane Aquastream Chiller with internal warm air-handling units.

Watkins Hire received a call from the facility management company who maintain the store, for an emergency cooling solution to supplement the stores cooling system as the existing Air Handling system was unable to meet the increased demands due to the ambient temperatures of 28-deg C inside the store.

There's been a lot of talk about whether biodiesel is green or not recently. A lot of people have been understandably shocked to realise that not all biodiesels have credible green credentials. Sustainable Bio-diesel, which is derived from used cooking oil, is a sustainable, cleaner burning alternative to fossil-diesel. Watkins have developed the heater to help their clients minimise the impacts on the environment, they are the first heater hire company to develop a temporary site heater that operates on locally sourced 100% sustainable bio diesel manufactured to EN14214 standard.

The BioDiesel heater has several unique features and makes all other site heaters either redundant or very archaic and outdated.

A unique feature of the Watkins BioDiesel site heater it is the 1st site heater available in the European rental market to fully comply with all EU legislation for fuel storage and transportation, the heater comes with an incredible 1000-litre bunded fuel tank which is integral to the heater which provide the hirer with 54 hours of operation before refuelling is required. The site heater has been rigorously tested and is certified by UN to comply with ADR & PPG2 and PPG26 all this simply means the heater is the only heater available on the market that can be legally delivered to site full of fuel.

No detail has been left to chance with the environmental credentials, even though Biodiesel is rapidly biodegradable and completely non-toxic, meaning spillages represent far less of a risk than fossil diesel spillages. The area below the burner has a drip tray to catch any possible leaks. To further prevent leaks the integral bunded fuel tank is fitted with an overfill protection alarm that alerts a fuel delivery driver that they are close overfilling the fuel tank.

The Problem

During the summer floods of 2007 a 13th Century Country House Hotel based in the West country became victim to rising water levels, whilst the majority of the hotel escaped water damage one area suffered extensive damage. The boiler room was below ground level in a cellar under the hotel and was completely submerged for several days. The heart of any hotel is its boiler room, when the flood water receded the hotel insurers loss adjusters accessed the damage and declared all boiler plant equipment un-repairable. Heating contractors were called into quote for replacement, however it soon be apparent the hotel would be faced with a 12 week period without heating or hotwater. Faced with the delay in replacing the entre boiler plant room the loss adjuster and the owners of the hotel looked for a solution to mitigate losses and keep the hotel operational. Watkins Hire was contacted by the loss adjuster to provide an emergency temporary heating and hotwater boiler hire solution.

The Solution

Watkins Hire received a phone call and immediately dispatched a heating boiler rental specialist sales engineer to access the hotels requirements. On arriving at the hotel Watkins boiler hire were able to guarantee heating and hotwater by the close of business the same day, with a call to Watkins Hire's West Midlands depot heating boiler hire units and ancillary equipment were loaded to Watkins own transport and were on the way. Watkins Hire are currently supplying temporary heating boiler rental equipment to many flood damaged properties around the United Kingdom from a large manufacturing plants, two schools, a leisure centre, office’s and several retail and industrial buildings all by the summer 2007 floods, Watkins were able to provide a detailed plan whilst on site including pricing giving both the owners and loss adjusters piece of mind in the heating boiler hire solution.

Equipment supplied by Watkins Hire included a pair of HeatGEN MBR 100kW mobile oil fired heating boilers to provide standby and duty boiler operation and 400 metres of quick fit flexible heating and hotwater pipework, a FuelPAK 3000-litre bunded fuel tank, the fuel tank was UN & ADR compliant which allowed it to be legally delivered to site full of fuel, which allowed same day delivery with our own hiab, installation and commissioning.

The boiler hire equipment selected for this project were two of Watkins Boiler Hire’s new range of HeatGEN heating boiler hire models MBR100 as it had the following features that provided speed of installation by using storz quick fit flexible hoses, it also provided without modification time clock control and building protection during frosts and colder weather.

The hotel dates back to the thirteenth century and is set in glorious grounds featuring immaculate gardens with running stream, small waterfalls, croquet lawns and tennis courts. provides peace and tranquillity, combined with international standards of comfort, that the discerning guest has a right to expect and the hotel manager placed a restriction on Watkins Boiler Hire, we were tasked to not only install and commission the same day, the boiler plant rooms had to be placed at the tradesmen entrance and parking area so the temporary boiler plant rooms would not be visible to any of hotel guests.

The hot water boiler hire equipment arrived three hours after the initial phone call to the Walsall depot, the equipment and the installation team installed 200 metres of heating flow and return pipework with two specially fabricated headers to link the two 100kw heating boilers together and a further 200 metres of domestic hotwater flow and return pipework.

The hot water boiler hire units were commissioned late in the evening and the hotels heating pipework was freed of air locks to allow correct circulation to all areas of the hotel and handed to the hotel manager online. The next day Watkins engineers visited site to ensure all air had been removed and review the installation with the loss adjuster.

Watkins Hire were contracted to supply all fuel during the hire period, supplies were constantly monitored and maintained, by providing a web based fuel monitoring telemetry system which monitored remotely fuel consumption and automatically re-ordered when refuelling was required, this fuel management feature is unique to Watkins Boiler Hire was supplied completely free of charge.
