African LoveBird mutations have different inheritance characteristics.

It is best to understand the inheritance patterns to help you identify what to use for your breeding pair in order to produce your targetted offspring.

Verify the breeding charts to check what mutations you can use for your breeding pair.

There are a lot of possible pairing combinations that will give you possibly similar results.

This is where the inheritance pattern reference will be very useful for sourcing your breeding materials.

Have this pairing combinations handy to help you make an informed decision.

You can also easily adjust if the exact breeding pair you need is not available.

3. Get your African LoveBirds breeding pair from a reputable Breeder or well-known Aviary.

This may be more expensive, but you will be sure that you are getting good quality materials for your African LoveBirds breeding pair.

I have seen a lot of questions being posted in social media groups coming from Newbie Breeders asking help to identify the mutation of their LoveBirds.

In most cases, a pair of LoveBirds is posted and requests for help on what can possibly be the offspring for this pair. Some photos show the tail and wings part.

These questions are very tricky to answer by just merely looking at the photos and without knowing the background of the parents.

I became fascinated about this topic with the objective of sharing the information in an easy to understand manner to help newbies get acquainted with the Peach-Faced LoveBirds mutations.

My research led me to different sites and posts, but I got the most interesting and most informative presentation of this topic from an article written by Rick Smith from Lakeview Terrace, California.

The article is titled, The Peach-Faced LoveBirds, Agapornis Roseicollis and its Mutations which was featured in the AFA WatchBird magazine.

In order to understand the evolution of the mutations and combinations in the Peach-Faced African LoveBirds, we need to understand the three methods or patterns of inheritance.

The three methods or patterns of inheritance are Recessive, Sex-Linked, and Factor.

These patterns of inheritance were initially posted separately in a three-part series.

This Breeding Chart aims to help provide an idea regarding the breeding combinations for the Ino mutation in African LoveBirds.

This Ino Breeding Chart applies to both Albino and Lutino African LoveBirds, and therefore, I will be using the term “Ino” within this article.

Albino is the term used to refer to White Ino LoveBirds.

Lutino is the term used to refer to Yellow Ino LoveBirds.

This Ino Breeding Chart will also provide a bloodline composition of the offspring, which will be useful for matching breeding pairs for a targeted result.

The Ino gene is a Sex-Linked trait. This genetic trait is hereditary and can be passed on to the offspring. The Ino inheritance will depend on the INO genes the parents carry.

Since the Ino trait is sex-linked, daughters will NEVER be Split-Ino.

Daughters can only be either Visual Ino or Normal.

Sons on the other hand can be, Visual Ino or Split-Ino.

FACTOR INHERITANCE

This blog post will discuss the next method or pattern of inheritance which is what is called a FACTOR.

FACTOR inheritance in African LoveBirds.

A FACTOR is a dominant mutation that can be carried by either sex. When a LoveBird carry a FACTOR, there is no such thing as a split.

In a DOMINANT trait, only one of the LoveBird parent needs to provide the the genetic information that makes up the chromosomes pairing in order for the trait to be seen visually (referred to as a Single Factor for that trait).

If both parents carry a FACTOR, the genetic information from both parents will create a stronger and more easily seen results of the mutation. This is referred to as a Double Factor.

Here is an example of Single Factor mutation. The American Yellow Pieds are an example of a mutation that is produced by a Single Factor.

If a Pied is mated with a Normal Green, the offsprings can be both Pieds and Normal Greens.

Here is an example of the Dark Factor mutation.

A Single Dark Factor Green is called a Medium Green or Jade.

A Double Dark Factor Green is called a Dark Green or Olive.

Therefore with Dark Factors we have three possibilities:

Normal Green - No Factor

Medium Green - Single Factor

Dark Green - Two or Double Factor

SEX-LINKED INHERITANCE

This blog post will discuss the next method or pattern of inheritance which is what is called SEX-LINKED.

SEX-LINKED inheritance in African LoveBirds are traits that are carried in the genetic chromosomes that also determines the sex of the offspring.

In sex-linked inheritance daughters will NEVER be Split.

Daughters can only be either Visual or Normal.

Sons on the other hand can be, Visual or Split.

Let’s us use the Lutino mutation for our example.

Breeding Pair 1:

Lutino (Cock) x Normal Green (Hen)

Offspring are Normal Green Daughters; Green Split-Lutino Sons; Green Lutino Daughters

For this breeding pair, Sons will be Green Split-Lutino.

Daughters will either be Lutinos or Normal Greens.

There is no such thing as Daughters being Split-Lutino.

Breeding Pair 2:

Normal Green (Cock) x Lutino (Hen)

Offspring are Normal Green Daughters; Normal Green Split-Lutino Sons

For this breeding pair, All offspring will be visually Normal Greens.

There are no Lutinos produced.

Breeding Pair 3:

Normal Green Split-Lutino (Cock) x Lutino (Hen)

Offspring are Normal Green Daughters; Normal Green Split-Lutino Sons; Lutino Daughters; Lutino Sons

For this breeding pair, all four possibilities can be produced.

Breeding Pair 4:

Offspring are Lutino

For this breeding pair, all offspring will be Lutino and will be produced for both sexes.

Let us start with the RECESSIVE inheritance.

RECESSIVE INHERITANCE

RECESSIVE inheritance in African LoveBirds requires both parents to have the recessive genes for the mutation to be seen visually. If a LoveBird has only one contributed recessive genetic code from the parents, then this is said to be a “split” of the genetic trait. It is also good to remember that a LoveBird that is “split” to a trait carries that trait but cannot be seen visually. Splits to a recessive trait is inherited by both sons or daughters.

Breeding Pair 1: Normal Green x Blue

Offsprings are Normal Green /Blue

Note: The first resulting color is the visible color and the “/“ mark refers to a SPLIT, followed by the color to which the LoveBird is split with.

Breeding Pair 2: Normal Green /Blue x Normal Green /Blue

Offsprings are: 25% Normal Green; 50% Normal Green /Blue; 25% Blue

In other words, If four offspring are produced, on average one will be visible Blue, and the other three will be visible Green, two of which may be split to Blue.

Breeding Pair 3: Normal Green /Blue x Blue

Offsprings are: 50% Normal Green /Blue; 50% Blue

In this cross, note that all the visible Green LoveBirds will be Split to Blue; or out of four offsprings produced, on the average two will be Green colored Split to Blue and two Blue LoveBirds.

Breeding Pair 4: Blue x Blue

Offsprings are: 100% Blue

All offsprings produced in the pairing will be visibly Blue colored.

IMPORTANT!

In the early days with the first recessive mutations, these genetics table for RECESSIVE mutations were an accurate reference for predicting what offspring will be produced and what breeding pairs will produce the best results.

However, the current Peach-Faced LoveBirds are no longer pure mutations.

The Peach-Faced LoveBirds has evolved so diversely over the years and has produced many mutations. These LoveBirds are and may be Split to many different colors.

There are confusion in some cases where the breeding pair of Blue x Blue produced a White LoveBird. When this happens, we would know that the parent LoveBirds, while visibly Blue are actually Split to White.

To some degree, because of the splits to many different colors it has also become increasingly difficult to understand the LoveBirds genetic background and predict the color of its offspring.

On the other hand, recessive traits has made breeding African LoveBirds more exciting because there is no limit to the number of combinations that can be produced.

The next method or pattern of inheritance is what is called SEX-LINKED.

MED GREEN – (One Dark Factor. Also known as: Jade, D Green)
ORANGE-FACED
AQUA – (Also known as Blue, Par Blue, Dutch Blue)
MED AQUA – (One Dark Factor. Also known as: Cobalt, D Blue)
WHITE-FACED AQUA – (Also known as White-Faced Blue, Turquoise)
DEC or Dark Eye Clear
YELLOW-FACED – (This is the Aqua version of the Orange-Face)
SEAGREEN – (Also known as Aqua Turquoise)
EDGED – (Also known as Greywing, Marbled, American Dilute, Cherry Head, Golden Cherry, Silver Cherry, Spangled)
JAPANESE DILUTE – (Also known as: Suffused, Japanese Cherry)

WattaBird! Avoid Breeding this Pair in African LoveBirds

I have noticed an African LoveBirds mutation that is characterized by gradation in its feathers on the wings that looks similar to a Euwing mutation and yet looks different from the photos of Euwings I usually see on posts. The plumage looks like strands and different. I became interested to learn and understand this mutation, so I did my research.

My research led me to this article from LoveBird Breeding Tips and Mutation Guide.

This article explained the reason behind the unexpected result of breeding back to back Euwing African LoveBirds.

The back story is based on a breeding pair intended to produce Green Euwing Opaline LoveBirds.

The breeding pair used was a Green Euwing Split-Opaline Cock paired to a Green Euwing Hen.

This breeding pair is projected to produce Green Euwing Split-Opaline Sons, Green Euwing Opaline Daughters (since Opaline is Sex-Linked), Normal Sons and Normal Daughters.

While the breeding pair is good based on the breeding chart and have produced the desired offspring (Green Euwing Opaline LoveBirds), the genetics did not mix very well in the Euwing mutation.

The Author, in his own words described the feathers as looking crumpled, not inflated, and untidy. The feathers look twisted and looks severe on the wings even after the second molting.

So, what happened in the Euwing mutation?

The Back to Back Euwing (both Cock and Hen carry the Euwing mutation) pairing in this case produced a Double Factor (DF) Euwing and around 80 to 90 percent of the time DF Euwing will have broken feathers.

The feathers become wrinkled and twisted because of the build up of melanin in the feathers.

The offspring’s health also deteriorates and most of these DF Euwing LoveBirds cannot fly.

Therefore, it is not recommended to pair Back to Back Euwing LoveBirds because of the deterioration of the DF Euwing LoveBirds health instead of breeding to improve on this mutation.

For this article, I will try to provide some useful references to ensure that you know what to take note and what to watch out for when sourcing for a Split-Opaline African LoveBird.

Using a Split-Opaline Cock for your breeding program depends a lot on a trustworthy source for your African LoveBird cock (Split-Opaline).

Therefore, you have to source your Split-Opaline Cock from a reputable and trustworthy Breeder or Aviary.

Using a Split-Opaline Cock for your breeding program will also be budget friendly (You know what I mean).

It is important to note that only the Cock can be Split-Opaline.

Since the Opaline gene is a Sex-Linked, please take note that there will never be Split-Opaline daughters.

And most importantly, the Split-Opaline is not visual. This means the Split-Opaline African LoveBird will look exactly the same as a Normal African LoveBird, but they are genetically different. This is where the confusion and misunderstanding come into play.

You can only confirm a Split-Opaline Cock by breeding evidence.

And therefore, as I have mentioned earlier and I cannot emphasize it more that it is very very important to source your Split-Opaline cock from a reputable and trustworthy Breeder or Aviary.

A well-balanced diet should include:

1. Mixed Seeds and Grains

Mixed Seeds and Grains are the most common feeds available in my nearest Pet shop.

I prefer mixed seeds and grains from well-known brands since the mixture goes through special formulation to meet a well-balanced diet specific to African LoveBirds nutritional requirements.

Mixed Seeds and Grains contain different combinations of white millet, yellow millet, black millet, red sorghum, canary seeds, oats, oat groat, clipped oats, sunflower seeds, safflower seeds, flax-seeds, quinoa, whole wheat, and other seeds.

There are also different mixtures or formulations for different stages of our LoveBirds to support their nutritional needs.

2. Supplements: Vitamins

I prefer powdered vitamins from a well-known brand that is specifically formulated for African LoveBirds. Based on my research, powdered supplements are often regarded as more stable.

I also place cuttlefish bone in each of the cages, to provide for my African LoveBird’s calcium needs.

Crucial Vitamins for Your Birds

Vitamins that your bird needs include vitamin A, E, D3, and B-complex. Vitamin A is considered an important skin vitamin that helps with the health of the eyes, feathers, reproductive system, and immune system. Vitamin A can be provided as beta carotene, which converts to vitamin A as needed. The rest is excreted. Vitamin A deficiency is the most common deficiency seen in pet birds. Symptoms of vitamin A deficiency include white spots that catch infection, swollen eyes, dullness of feather color, wheezing, and weight loss.

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and its prime function is to scavenge free radicals. Vitamin E regulates and protects vitamin A; it also prevents the B vitamins and vitamin C from oxidation. Although vitamin C usually breaks down before being consumed, it is important for strong cell walls and blood vessels.

Vitamin D3 is essential for healthy bones, feathers, and egg laying. This vitamin helps birds absorb calcium and use it in their bodies. Birds create vitamin D with the help of the sun or full-spectrum lighting. However, keep in mind that windows filter out the sun's UV rays, so birds will not receive sufficient vitamin D3 through a window.

Another group of vitamins that is important for birds are the B-complex vitamins, which include vitamins B6, B12, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, folic acid, and biotin. Although each acid has its own important function, B-complex vitamins as a whole help break down food and nutrients for your bird's body to use. B-complex vitamins should be given to your bird on a daily basis because they are continually excreted from the body.

As for minerals, calcium is the most important for birds. Calcium is needed for strong bone formation, blood clotting, feather growth, and healthy eggs. Birds can receive calcium through supplements, cuttlebone, and mineral blocks.

Lastly, birds will benefit from balanced fatty acids, Omega-3 and Omega-6. Omega fatty acids assist the immune system and the body's ability to respond to disease. In the right proportions, Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids can help keep your bird healthy.

3. Pellets

I have seen Pellets that are also available from the nearby Pet Shop or online shopping portals. These pellets are also formulated specifically for LoveBirds. There are different formulations for different stages of our LoveBirds.

I have not tried the pellets as this is not my personal preference.

4. Tips from Badilla Aviary

I have learned these tips from the Badilla Aviary public website.

Part of their daily routine is to serve a mixture of chopped green pechay, carrots, and hard-boiled eggs, early in the morning. At the same time, water with diluted bird vitamins is served.

Then after an hour, the mixed seeds are served. The ration will cover for the entire day.

At mid-day, the water with diluted vitamins is removed and replaced with fresh water. The water ratio will be good until the following morning.

Dried cuttlefish bone is available all the time.

“For pairs that have produced some baby chicks, we immediately provide them with hand-feeding powder/mixture for birds which the parents can start giving to their babies. The reason we are doing this is because after two (2) weeks from hatching, we harvest the baby chicks and eventually provide them food three (3) times a day by hand-feeding. Hand-feeding powder/mixture, pechay, carrots, hard-boiled eggs, and lukewarm water are the ingredients of our hand-feeding formula.”
